- Change the DNS to either Google's or Open DNS servers

Was the iPod previous synced to another iTunes library/computer? If so you can only use the manual method and that only works with music and videos.

You really have a 2G iPod. Aple only made 32 and 64 GB 3G iPods. You need a newer iPod. Sorry.

That's correct. There never was an 3G 8GB iPod Touch. It was incorrectly referred to one by some resellers and retailers.
There is no official user guide for the 2G iPod Touch running iOS 4.2.1 from Apple. You may be able to find an unofficial one online somewhere still.

i've read numerous stories about how there isn't one but my nephew has a 8gb 2nd gen. and the back of mine looks different, the font size is smaller, but that is the only difference, other than that, is there really one???

Sorry, Apple did not make an 8gB version of the 3rd generation. Check the model number on the back. A1288 is a 2nd gen. A1318 is 3rd

Guess this is a failed expirement. I created this post so that I could see if it was realistic and believeable enouh because well I'm a writer, I used real details and places to make it sound real. Jailbreaking cannot be discussed on Apple forums., except to point you to the following article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3743 which will let you know why Apple strongly cautions against "jailbreaking".
You could sell your current iPod and buy a new one, which will be able to use iOS 5.

Create a NEW account using these instructions. Make sure you follow the instructions. Many do not and if you do not you will not get the None option. You must use an email address that you have not used with Apple before.

Using those instructions you may also be able to select PayPal if that is allowed in your country.

Without knowing current status of the iPod:
Try:
- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- Try on another computer
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
