We need to authenticate before assign IP address

we need to authenticate my pc before assign ip address from dhcp .
we have AD for authentication

Hi Laith,
You need to enable your wireless/wired supplicant for 802.1x authentication and configure your switch/ WLC ( depending upon wired or wireless) for 802.1x. Typically dot1x works well with a backend radius server and the radius server integrates with AD for credential check. You can search for documentation in cisco site depending upon your switch software/hardware.
Thanks,
Mani

  • Help! Need to release self assigned IP address

This is my daughter's CPU...I tried the renew DHCP lease, restarted the iMac (G3, strawberry 266 MHz), cable modem & router and still the stupid static IP address still shows up! I called the ISP and tried many of these standard fixes, I even reinstalled OSX Panther and the problem remains. It used to work well until I put the CPU away for couple of months and when I tried to reconnect through Comcast, it did not. Please help me!!!! >_<<br>
iMac Intel Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.3)

the only thing u can do for a self assigned ip address is power cycle the modem for 5 minutes, make sure the LED lights are out.. some modems have batteries... if that doesnt work try creating a new network location.. if that doesnt work then you will have to call your internet service provider
you could trying booting to your install disc and running network utility there but yes..

  • Lost wireless and repeated self assigned IP address

After I updated to OSX 10.5.6 my powerbook started dropping my wireless/internet connection, and adopted a self-assigned IP address. This happened whether I connected to the router via wireless or cable.
I was eventually able to change the system configuration files as suggested in previous posts, and reset my PRMU. This has worked for a wee while, but sometimes on starting up my laptop, the machine self assigns again.
I know the internet is available as I can access it from my iphone.
Then 20min ago, whilst surfing, the internet went down AGAIN, and self-assigned its favourite IP address.
I recently updated to 10.5.7, but the problem remains.
Is this a new problem or has it been going on for a while?
Also, is it a hardware or a software problem?
    Any ideas?
    Charlie

If you are able to connect initially and then it drops out I would look towards possible sources of interference. While most modern devices avoid this issue fairly well, it is a possibility. Devices such as cordless phones used to cause problems.
If it is dropping out while you are physically connected, I would perhaps check the settings on your router. Most models have a reset function which will allow you to reset it to factory defaults. Then you could reconfigure it and see if the problem persists.
The other possibility is that there is a software service on your macbook that is starting up and causing the network loss. If possible, I would attempt to initialize and reinstall all the software on your macbook. Note that this will wipe everything off, so make sure you make appropriate backups before reinstalling from scratch.
Once you have reinstalled the OS, you can upgrade it to the most recent version and see if the problem persists before installing any other software that may interfere with it.
You really need to go through a process of elimination to find out whether the problem lies with the macbook or the router. However considering your iphone works fine, I would look towards the macbook first.

  • Can't connect to internet..self assigned ip address problem with DSL Modem

I've run into this before, without resolution, and now again on a friend's iMac. Time to ask around...
Basically, everything appears to be assigned and configured perfectly, but the network status always shows, "...you have a self assigned IP address and may not be able to connect to the internet". Sure can't connect to the net when it says that.
I've gone thru the procedure advise before that details the sequence of events needed to insure the modem resets and recognizes the Mac and it's incoming DSL (sbcglobal) signal. The order of network priority is set properly by dragging built in ethernet to the top of the list. Modem was powered down, plugged in, and then connected to the Mac, but no solution. Any ideas? thanks

This continues to be a mystery. I've had my powerbook on several networks, and connection has, most of the time, been an automatic process. Additionally, I've installed new systems for people with the same isp, and all has been well. So easy is the process, it's never been an issue. However, following explicit procedural instructions (including powering the Mac down), has proven unsuccessful on 2 different occasions.
There is little help with the isp support in India, which is where the call routes too.
The only thing I have not done is to swap out the cable at one of the locations, but the other location, which has the same issue, works fine on the iMac there. Only when I connect my Powerbook to the modem, does the "...self assigned ip address...not be able to connect to the internet" appear.
I just keep thinking there has got to be a small detail that is being overlooked.

  • Airport: Self-assigned ip address, can't connect (public routers only)

this has been talkeda bout before, but is extremely frustrating, because i don't have the problem with a PC.
1/2 of the public routers i connect to have some kind of login page, most the time they just say "youre getting free internet, click here" ... but sometimes that login page never comes up, and the network card says "airport has a self-assigned ip address and may not be able to connect to the internet"
this only happens on pulic routers for me, and only ones that have login pages.
its very odd because for example, starbucks has all the same routers, all are "attwifi" now .. i go to one, i get hte login screen, go to a different one, i don't get it...and can't connect
with a PC, i get it every time.
this is undoubtably a leopard problem, that needs to be fixed. please!

The wifi icon shows no connection with the network -- the "!" mark.
However the computer sees the network, i.e. when I search in Network Preferences the network is listed.
So: 1) the computer sees the network but 2) will not connect to the network. The reason given for refusal to connect is "self-assigned IP address".
Not to be repetitive but two other Mac laptops are connected to the same network and working perfectly. The network preferences, as shown in the "advanced" section, are the same for all machines, i.e. DHCP is selected and IPv6 is Automatic.

  • After reading hours on this forum still having self-assigned IP address

I just posted this below on another thread but it kinda is in the wrong subforum. This really is a networking problem:
I have spent about 3-4 hours today already (a Sunday after all) reading just about every thread I could find that mentions this problem (airport choosing a self-assigned IP address and thus not sharing the internet from ethernet connection with the iPhone) on this forum and elsewhere.
    Power circuit interruption didn't work
rebooting, resetting, etc all not working
    password deletion not working
moving it up or down not working
It worked fine now for months. My set up is a dsl router that connects the internet via ethernet to my iMac and then Airport is supposed to share it via Wifi so my iPhone can use it. As I said, that worked just fine for months now.
Yesterday I upgraded to snow leopard and am now on 10.6.4. It worked still fine yesterday!
Then I shut the system down.
This morning reboot and it just won't work anymore.
Any suggestion mentioned anywhere in this forum which a non-specialist like me understands does not work on my setup. I don't know where to go next or who to even ask for help!
It's so frustrating I obviously need this to work.
Because my iPhone has Daylite touch and needs the server setting to work to connect properly and sync. Daylite only syncs via wifi. That's my work!
    Anymore ideas out there?

    Hi,
thanks for offering help! Really appreciated.
I'm not quite sure how that should help? I'm always a bit with resetting things. What can it potentially mess up that is working now? What settings will be affected? There is a list but I'm not sure if there are any current changes.
And in the list it doesn't seem to be directly linked to any networking info.
I've tried a save reboot now but while this is apparently a good idea in any event, it didn't help solve my problem. Still getting a self-assigned IP.
I wonder if getting a new router might solve the problem? Mine is somewhat old. The weird thing is though that it did work for a short while before it stopped doing so. So this can't really be then, can it?
Oh this is so frustrating. I must get my network running again.

  • Auto-assigned IP address on an open network

    Hi Mac users,
I guess somebody else has already had that problem (or I would really be the unluckiest person in the mac world), but I can't find any solution to it, so PLEASE help me!
I have had my MBP for 6 months, it came with Leopard, and in November I upgraded to Snow Leopard (with someone else's CD that I can't get back do please don't tell me to do a clean Snow Leopard install). I'am not really a Mac pro cause I used to be a Windows user (yeah I know) and I never really got any problems with my Mac so please explain clearly if you have a solution for me!
    Here's my problem :
I need to access an open network at my school. You're supposed to connect to this network without entering any weep or pa key, than you get to a page where you login with your school information. Then you get full internet access (web, skype,…)
The thing is that I can't event connect to this network… it says "Airport has an auto-assigned IP address 169.254.143.75 and won't be able to connect to the internet" (my computer is in french so my translation may vary from the english message). This occurs with Automatic DHCP for IPv4, and whether IPv6 is in Automatic or in Disabled setting.
The exact same thing happens whan I connect to the network using the Ethernet cable... I get the auto-assigned IP address and all...
Of course, I tried disabling and enabling Airport, and renewing the DHCP, but I always get this auto-assigned IP address.
I know the problem doesn't come from the hardware because I can connect without any problem to my wireless network at home.
I am using the 10.6.2 version of Mac OS and I already checked that all the available updates are installed.
I had a similar problem before upgrading to Snow Leopard : I could connect once to this open network, but then if I closed the lid of the computer, and then reopen it after a while, it wouldn't connect and I had to restart it entirely...
One of my friends has a Mac running with Leopard, and he has no problem connecting to the network, and neither do the windows user. I don't think it's a problem with the number of connections available on the network because I can NEVER connect to it…
Please help me!!! I'm hoping a Mac genius pops out of the computer and tells me what to do

    Bonjour
The weirdest thing is that wired ethernet is not working, not getting an IP address. This may be some kind f incompatibility with the hardware but I doubt it.
Did you check in Airport and Ethernet settings that 802.1X is not enabled and that Ethernet negociation is "Automatiquement".
Also, you can completely wipe network profiles by removing those files from /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/ :
    NetworkInterfaces.plist
    com.apple.network.identification.plist
    com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
    Then reboot

  • Computer-to-computer Airport network no dice - "self assigned IP address"

I have spent hours reading posts on this and other forums about this problem with Airport, but none of the fixes have connected me to the Internet. My new iMac has a DSL line coming into it and an Airport card. My eMac has an Airport card too. I am not using a base station. The eMac recognizes the network I created, it even allows file sharing, but in the TCP/IP prefs, I get the dreaded notice about how the computer is using a "self assigned IP address and may not connect to the Internet." So I took one user's advie and set it up to use DHTP manually and I typed in an IP address of 10.10.10.x and my "network status" finally went from the yellow dot of death to green, saying I was connected to the Internet. But my browsers sure don't think so. I turned firewall off. Still no help. Do I have to turn firewall off on the iMac, from which the eMac is getting its Airport signal? I need a firewall, right? "Firewall good," right?
The issue was the IP address until I entered a manual one. Now the issue has changed. I am connected to the network, and at least technically to the Internet, according to the computer's ability to gauge such things, but I'm still not online. I have done the "unplug the DSL modem" thing, and unplugged the computers, and turned Airport on and off, trashed Airport prefs from the Library and all the sensible things people have mentioned online. I am hoping some fresh eyes see this. Can it have to do with my iMac's settings, not the eMac I'm having trouble connecting with? I've spent about 12 hours on this with no luck. Thanks,
    George

O.K., I tried to launch the specified site in Safari and it never loaded anything or gave me an error message. The blue filled up the address bar to cover up "http://" but it didn't progress further. The IP address it self-assigned is 169.254.60.164. My iMac which should be Internet-sharing is not sending it a proper IP address.
Both computers are up to date with updates. The iMac has OS 10.4.10, and the eMac has 10.3.9 because I still run Classic mode. I don't know enough about computers to know if those system differences would cause a problem in Airport. They both have Airport Extreme cards. Any idea which settings in the source iMac I'm sending out the Internet signal from could cause this problem? I have personal file sharing on, personal Web sharing, and printer sharing.
In my Network preferences, under my SBC DSL, the IP address looks normal, starting with a 75, but under Airport, it starts with 169.254 like the eMac's IP address setting. I don't really understand these technical issues, and I've never dealt with a wireless network before. I guess I can always pony up $180 and use a base station, and problem solved. I would think. But computer to computer Internet sharing is supposed to work, so now I am obsessed with it. Thanks again.

  • Assigning IP Address

Is there a way to assign specific IP addresses to computers and connected devices that won't change.
I have three laptops (iBook, MacBook Pro, Dell PC) and an HP laserjet printer. And I am connected to the internet via a Belkin router (Dynamic connection) through a Comcast cable modem. I usually have just the MacBook Pro, PC laptop the laser printer on/connected. Sometimes when I need to have the other iBook connected, all the IP gets switch around or re-assigned.
When that happens, I have to add the laser printer back to the printer list (because the IP address has changed). Also, when I try to access my PC laptop via "connect to server" the old address does not work. I have to check the control panel of the Belkin router to see what IP address was assigned to the PC.

This will have each device on your network operating from a fixed IP address corresponding to the one the DHCP server had assigned. Now that address will not change. Note, however, that if a device is removed from the network and some new device is connected to which the DHCP server assigns the same address, then you cannot reconnect the other device until the new one is removed or you can end up with two devices trying to use the same IP address which will generate a system error.
I did manually assign specific and unique IP addresses to each computer. Everything worked fine. However, once I had the computers turned on in a different sequence and there was an IP conflict. I am not sure why? I had to manually change the IP address. Is the router's DHCP server trying to assign IP addresses to the computers?
I notice now that in my router's control panel, there are no IP addresses in the "LAN > DHCP Client List"— No leases. Before I manually assigned addresses, there was a list of IP addresses. Would it not make sense for the DHCP Client List to still show what IP address are currently in use?

  • Airport " Self Assigned Ip Address" Issue SOLVED

    Hi Guys,
I finally solved my problem and i just wanted to share for those who are in the same predictament. Well, for starters i have an iMac OS X Desktop. I recently just started having problems with my airport connection.  I would get the following message. " Airport has a self-assigned IP address and may not be able to connect to the internet"
Now, this post is specifically for those who have tried other solutions and had no luck such as my self. Also, for those who are trying to share connection from the ethernet to airport. I have tried the "New Location" Method, The turn airport off and on method etc
So, i had to investigate myself and i have found a quite simple solution.
    1. Go To > System Preferences > Network ( You should be on the exact image above )
2.Highlight Ethernet > Copy or write down The IP Address > Press the left arrow at the top left of the page, In other words go back.
3.Now Highlight Airport such as the image above > Click On " Advanced" at the bottom right of the screen.
    4. You should be at the screen SIMILIAR to the one above ( depending on your computer) > Where it states " Configure IPv4" Select " Using DHCP with manual address " from the the drop down menu.
    5.  Where it states " IP Address" Enter your "Ethernet" IP address that you copied in step 2.
    6. Click on " Apply Now" at the bottom right of the screen > A second message should now pop up confirming whether to " Apply Now " " Don't Apply" or whatever it says on your computer, just continue on clicking "Apply Now" or " Continue" , " Okay" or whatever the exact word is on your computer.
    7. Go back to the original network screen, such as the one shown in the first image. ( System Prefrences >Network) , & Airport should now say connected.
So, that's what worked for me. Hopefully it will work for you too. If you need help with anything feel free to comment and i will reply soon as possible.  I know how annoying this problem was for me so i am willing to help.

I'm glad it worked for you. Okay, if I understand you correctly, You are asking what password do you need when connecting to wifi on the other device ? If so, it depends on how you have your network setup. For starters, I would need to know your network specifics before I can answer. Is it an unsecured network ? Such as, your cable provider "optimumwifi" or "xfinitywifi"? Or did you create the network yourself ? If you are connecting using the Internet your cable provider provides from the modem, you do not need a password. If it asks you for an password, try using the password you used on your cable providers website. If you are using a created network. There are a few steps to retrieve the password. Also, it depends, What type of device are you trying to connect too ?

  • Airport card in PB G4 has "self assigned IP address"

I've been using a PB G4 with my Linksys router for quite some time, and now it won't connect to the internet. I shows the signal strength, and that's it's connected to the router but no internet. I've run all the utilities, and diagnostics, but nothing has been fixed. The only thing I see is that the Airport has a "self assigned IP address and may not be able to connect to the internet." This message is in the network preferences.
I'm not sure if this is in the correct forum, but if anyone can help that would be awesome.
Thanks in advance for your help.

When I came back to it, the battery was completely dead and the clock had reset to 1969.
It sounds like you need to replace the PRAM battery on your PB. I would suggest doing so before attempting any additional troubleshooting of the AirPort Card.
Please check out the following iFixit link to see if your PB has a PRAM battery and what it would take to replace it.

  • Wi-Fi self-assigned IP address and won't connect to internet?

    Hi guys,
Hoping someone can figure this one out for us as we're all starting to suffer from Wi-Fi withdrawal symptoms!!!!
We are using iMac OS X 10.7.5. We have an ethernet connection coming directly into the iMac from the vessel's server (working on a cable laying ship) and can still gain access to the internet on the desktop itself.
Up until this afternoon everything was working as per usual (iPhones sharing internet through network created on iMac, this needed reset roughly every 15-30 minutes in order for it to allow devices to access internet). But then all of a sudden nothing can connect to the Wi-Fi network. There are very short periods (5-10 seconds every 20-30 mins) where connections are made then drops out again. Have tried several different methods (renew DHCP Lease, create new location, etc) but nothing seems to work.
Then I noticed that our Wi-Fi had a Self-Assigned IP address (attached a screenshot below):
If anyone has any suggestions or ideas on how to remedy this problem it would be much appreciated, cheers .

Can your MacBook connect to any other Wi-Fi network or just not the one provided by your AirPort base station?
Was it able to connect before or has it never been able to connect to your network?

  • No Internet with Lion. Stay away until self-assigned IP addresses are fixed!

I have a TimeCapsule (802.11n 3rd gen) and four Macs. Until two months ago all was well and everyone could connect.
Two months ago the Apple apps on the MacBook Pro stopped connecting to the Internet on the TimeCapsule network (Mail and Safari would not connect, Firefox was fine). The MacBook Pro connects on all other networks. I travel a fair amount and the computer has connected fine at all networks tried. I have sinced updated to Lion (10.7.2) and the problem is the same. The error in System Preferences indicates that the computer has a self-assigned IP address and will not be able to access the Internet - but Firefox works, so we know that is not  entirely the case.
Last week our desktop stopped being able to access the Internet using the TimeCapsule network. Problems the same as the MacBook but the desktop Mac is using Snow Leopard.
Our older laptop is using an earlier version of OSX and all is well. Out antique Mac laptop is also working well.
We also have a Verizon MiFi and all machines can access the Internet on that.
I have tried every "fix" I can find on the boards and through Google. Nothing works. From the looks of the boards, there are thousands of users with this problem and no answer from Apple.
I was much better off before I switched to Lion. In those days, I just used Firefox and looked at my iPad when I needed mail (and waited to sync at the office). But with Lion comes iCloud and an increased reliance on the App store, making  internet connectivity through Apple apps is a must. Can someone from Apple help us fix this? Does anyone have any suggestions?

That is what I told Comcast, but they said since my
    computer works "fine" in Safe-Boot,
Classic, and the other PC—then they
conclude there's no problem with their hardware and
that its not their problem; that its Apple's issue.
And nope I'm not connected wirelessly, it's through a
    basic ethernet cable.
I don't know who to blame for this. Five years ago, this never happened, but it is common now. It affects both Macs and PCs, but as usual, people like Comcast will make an effort to fix a PC but throw up their hands with a Mac. Go figure.
So, what speed, duplex and adapter type numbers
    should I put in?
I don't know for sure. Start with duplex. If it current says "auto", change it to "full". If that doesn't work, or if it already was "full", change it to "half". If still nothing, switch it back to "auto" and fiddle with all the 10/100 speed combinations. You may have to go back and try different duplex and speed combinations! It sounds harder than it is. Try changing the duplex and adapter settings from "auto" before changing the speed. I'm am on my work Dell right now (which needed the same fix BTW), so I can't give you very good step-by-step instructions.
The thing that troubles me is why is it that the
internet works fine in Safe-Boot and Classic, but not
    Normal OS X mode?
    No clue about that.

  • Subinterface FE router: assigning ip address

Wnat to connect 1 FE port of switch with 1 FE port of router (2800). As we need different subnet for voice and data wanted to 'subinterface' FE port on router. But when tried to assign ip address on FE 0/0.1 I got '% Configuring IP routing on a LAN subinterface is only allowed if that
subinterface is already configured as part of an IEEE 802.10, IEEE 802.1Q,
or ISL vLAN.'. How do I get this fixed? First but interface (or subinteraces in a vlan?or..)
    Thanks

    Hi Peter,
Before assigning the IP address you need to set the encapsulation on the interface and then it will take the IP address.
Please give the command under the subinterface
encapsulation dot1q 1 native ---> where 1 is the vlan number.
subsequently for different vlans you need to repeat this command under diff subinterfaces.
    encapsulation dot1q 2--> for vlan 2
    encapsulation dot1q 3--> for vlan 3
Native keyword you have to use for vlan1 only as that is the default native vlan on the switch.\

I tried everything. unplugged, turn off routers, rebooth imac, rebooth routers. but it still the same the IP address is self assigned.

    Hello, try this...
    Go to System Preferences
    Click Network
    Highlight AirPort and click Configure...
Choose “By default, join: Preferred networks”
Select your access point and Remove your access point with the minus button.
Launch your keychain access in Utilities and delete your access point keychain entry.
    Reboot
Go back to the “By default, join:” page and click the plus this time to add your access point. Enter the correct password, save, reboot.
Instead of joining it from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
