Weak Airport.. killing me

hi all
my powerbooks airport signal is always really low or unable to pick up wireless connection even if they are close by.. meanwhile my ibooks airport is really strong & gets a high signal even when the wireless device is far away...
can anybody help me with any suggestions as to why this is
& how i may be able to fix it
thank u

PowerBook - Metal
iBook - Plastic
That's why the iBooks signal is better. The antennas work better out of a plastic case than a metal case. The Titanium PowerBooks probably had the worst Airport reception.
I can't think of a way to fix it, except for buying a cardbus slot wifi card. The antenna will then stick out the side of the case, improving reception.

  • Very weak Airport Extreme Base Station signal...

    Hi --
I've been searching the forums here for some solution but haven't been able to find anything. I'm trying to upgrade my parent's wireless network in their home and they've had an Airport Extreme base station for a couple of years now. I recently switched them to broadband which is much faster than the crappy DSL they used to have but the problem that still exists (one that they've always had) is an incredibly weak Airport Base Station signal.
I've tried using different laptops and computers on it, but all of them register the same weak signal. Having my laptop 12 inches from the base station only gives me three bars. From three feet away it drops to two and anything over six feet is a 1 bar or nothing and that's all int he same room. Trying to access it from an adjacent room is fruitless.
Like I said, it's like this for all computers I've tested. Anyone know what's up with this? Is the base station on the fritz? I have the latest software update for it as far as I know.
    Thanks.

That's a good, helpful list but we don't really have any of those potential interfereces. Like I said, this signal is down to two bars from five feet away and only three bars from literally six inches away, so there's really not a lot of room for intererence from that distance anywat.
I've seen people wondering if the latest firmware update for Airport might be causing this, but I'm wondering if the Airport base station itself is maybe in the fritz. I guess I could try getting a new one. Anyone else out there have any other ideas?

  • How can I strenghten a weak Airport Extreme (2nd Generation) signal?

I have been having a weak WiFi signal in my Airport Extreme. Even when I am in a room that is less than 30 ft away.
    Here are the details:
    AirPort Extreme 802.11n (2nd generation)
         Version: 7.6.1
Wireless Mode: Participate in a WDS network
         Wireless Security: WPA/WPA2 Personal
         Channel: 6
         Connect Using: Ethernet
My Airport Extreme is on the second floor of the house and is connected to a D-Link DIR 825 router that is on the first floor.
Sometimes when I am on the second floor, I get a better signal from the D-Link router than from the Airpot Extreme.
How can I strenghten the signal?
    Thanks in advance

Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click on the AirPort Extreme
Information about the device will be displayed in the area to the right
The 3rd Generation product was the first Apple simultaneous dual band router, introduced in March 2009. Minor changes were made in the chipsets between the 3rd Generation and 4th Generation versions with some antenna improvements added in the 4th Generation versions as well. The 4th Generation version was introduced in October 2009.

  • Weak Airport Express Signal

    Hi,
My computer is only 5 feet away from my airport express, yet my connection is very weak (two bars at most).
How can I determine whether the problem is with my card or with Airport?
    Cheers

Those sound like good numbers. You could still be having an interference problem, though. Have you tried using a channel as different as possible from your neighbors'? A difference >= 3 is often recommended.
My neighbor' networks tend to appear and disappear. You might keep an eye on iStumbler's window, hoping to see whether your connection improves when a particular one shuts down. That could provide a helpful clue.
Have you made any recent changes in your home, such as a new heat source near your AX or new source of EMI?
I see you're using an 802.11b/g AX. If you're running the V6.3 firmware on it, I doubt that's the problem because I use the same. Furthermore, I don't believe the firmware for the b/g has been changed in quite awhile.

  • MacBookPro weak Airport reception

Airport signal strength on new MacBookPro is marginal or unusable. Signal strength is full on old iBook in same location. Is this MacBook faulty or is this a problem in general?
MacBookPro   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   Multiple Macs

Hello there, not sure I am posting in the most appropriate place.
I have noticed the problem when I have tried configuring the wi-fi network using WDS on two Airport Express base stations, one of which attached to a DSL modem operating as a main station and the second one on the same network as a relay.
I was finally able to distribute the internet from the two AE but the Air Tunes has been a nightmare.
The two bases are less than 50 feet away one from the other, with only tiny wall in between (and an open door!)
Still I cannot get airtunes working without major drops in the room where I am not sitting with the laptop.
I have thoughts it was an AirTunes issue but just today I figured that it is not.
If I move with the laptop from one room to the adiacent one after long time the airport signal goes down weak... takes very long time to pick up the signal of the second AE and then it pops up again to almost full scale and there you go, also the speakers start playing through Airtunes... while the ones in the previous room that were working while I was sitting next to their AE stop working!!!
In the passage between one room and the other internet connection slows down and APPS such as Skype gets disconnected.
I think that this means that I am loosing signal from previous AE and is taking long time to pick up from the closest one...
I do repeat that even at the fartest point from either AE I am no more than 50 feet away from the other... so I should be able to have a very clear signal from both of them no matter where I am with the laptop...
I am starting to think that the problem is really with the Laptop Airport set in both broadcasting and receiving... any clue on what I should do?
    Any suggestions? doubts?
Should I bring it in until is still under warranty? I want to add that on this MBP I have had to:
    - change superdrive
    - change keyboard
    - change battery
.-.- What else should I do???

  • Weak Airport Signal

For the past three years, I have gotten three of four bars when it came to signal strength. But for the past couple of months, I have only gotten two bars and my page load times are extremely long. I haven't changed anything on my end, but a couple of new networks have appeared from time to time in my Airport queue. I have tried changing channels with no effect.
Does anybody know how I can boost my Airport Express signal strength?

    Hi, Mike,
I'm also a ham radio operator. One of the best things to do with your 14 computers is to turn off 13 of them and to test them one at a time. This will let you verify whether or not you have a problem with the suspect Airport cards.
Once you determine if/that all machines behave the same, or not, when operated one at a time, you should next begin to test them together in groups of, say, 4.
Next, when you are pretty sure that you have identified certain Airport cards that seem always to be "weak," try swapping the Airport cards between computers, especially between those that seem to be "strong." You'll want to keep track of this by Airport card, not particularly by computer. This way you can prove that particular Airport cards are "weak" in all installations and locations, irrespective of the computer into which they are installed. Then you will be ready to contact Apple for replacements.
One of the previous postings that mentioned unit to unit interference was headed in the right direction. This is UHF radio operating at 2.4GHz. You will find a whole lot of weird stuff going on, especially in sensitivity to location, etc., but you can also expect a lot of signal strength variation from unit to unit.
Please let us all know how you are progressing with this problem.
    Jim

  • Weak airport connection

My classmates and I all have 15' MacBook Pros, but lately my wireless internet connection is much slower and weaker then theirs. Why might this be?

    HI,
Sometimes turning Airport off for about 5 minutes and turning it back on can help. Click the Airport icon in your Status Menu Bar and click: Turn Off Airport ... wait and turn it back on.
If you don't see the Airport icon, go to System Preferences/Network and click: Show Airport Status in Menu Bar.

  • Weak Airport signal strength after MacBook upgrade to OS 10.5

Today, I finally upgraded my 13-inch 2.16 GHz Core 2 Duo MacBook (2 gig RAM, 160 gig HD) to OS 10.5 from OS 10.4.11. After using install and archive to install the new system, I noticed the Airport signal was down to three bars from the usual four. After completing all the system updates to bring it up to 10.5.8, its still receiving only three bars. We're using a 2Wire wireless DSL modem for Internet service. I was getting the full four bars before the system upgrade, and my wife's 14" G4 iBook is still getting four bars.
What's going on here? Is there an available fix for this? Or am I doomed to going back to OS 10.4.11?

Those bars are only an approximation of Wi-Fi signal strength. In Mac OS X 10.5 if you pull down the AirPort menu bar item while holding down an option key you'll see a value "RSSI", which is the actual signal strength. If you were using an AirPort base station, you could use AirPort Utility to see actual signal and noise levels.
In Mac OS X 10.4 I don't think that option key trick works, but you should be able to use the AirPort command-line utility, as describe in the electronic book "Take Control of Your 802.11n AirPort Network" (http://www.takecontrolbooks.com/airport-n):
    - Launch Terminal
    - Type this command:
    cd /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/\
    Apple80211.framework/Versions/Current/Resources/
    - Type this command:
    ./airport -s
You'll see the "RSSI" value in one of the columns. If you compare the "RSSI" values for both OS versions, you may find the "RSSI" values more similar than the AirPort menu bar arcs suggest.
I have no financial connection to Take Control Books.

  • 17" powerbook very weak airport signal

I had used my 17" powerbook for about a year with no problems - out of nowhere i now have to be within 2 to 3 feet of my base station to get a signal. i have three other macs in my house that work on the same airport network without any problems.
    any suggestions? thanks

The wireless interface adapter and antenna on current generation 17" Powerbooks are not user-serviceable. My suggestion is that you have it looked at by an Apple service center. This is not a problem that can be fixed by simply tweaking some "settings".

  • Will X-rays that are used in the airport kill my ipod?

Yup, the subject is my question. So will it kill my ipod? Or it is safe?

I am a frequent traveller and bring my iPod all the time and I have never had any problems. Never heard of any problems from others.

  • Need helps on weak airport extreme signal

Please bear with me - as I posted here twice
I really need a help, get very tired with this airport extreme card with my brand new Mac Pro.
I bought the machine with bluetooth installed (confirmed that the BT wire connecting with the bluetooth card) and working just fine. I bought the airport extreme card and installed by the shop (there is no apple shop in HK). The IT guy connected only the wire 1 to the card, I questioned whether he needed to connect cables of 1 and 2 together, and he confirmed that only 1 was needed.
Brought the machine home and set up with WiFi with my apple extreme and time capsule (both N), the signal showed a level 4 signal (strongest) but after a minute it dropped to 1 even disappeared despite I placed the time capsule just next to my Mac Pro.
Open the case and connect the cable 2, but it did not show any improvement. Tried the 2 & 3 together - even worst.
Is that a common problem and can't be solved, if so, if I connected the time capsule with Mac Pro via ethernet, would it works? I had tried it but did not work, do I need to do some special setting on time capsule for this connection (Airport extreme (modem) -> time capsule -> Mac Pro (via ethernet)

Have a check of the wiring with the following link
    http://web.mac.com/ryemac3/RyeMAC3/Welcome/Entries/2008/4/17Airport_ExpressUpgrade.html
but make sure wire no.3 on top and wire no.1 at the bottom ... cover the wire no.2 with the plastic tube that it came with

  • Weak Airport Signal after RAM install...

I just installed a new RAM chip in my girlfriends G4 iBook and I am noticing a considerable loss is wireless signal from the airport card. The system profiler recognizes the card, and I have doubled checked to make sure I installed the card properly. Anyone have any ideas what might be wrong?

Probably the antenna wire is not properly installed into the card. Check the photos in KB 108039, Properly attaching the antenna on an AirPort Extreme Card to verify proper installation.
Otherwise... the antenna wire is probably damaged.

  • Can I boost Airport's power?

Apologies if this is a silly question. We have two i-macs at home. We have just bought Time Capsule which we are connecting to our ISP's Motorola cable modem. Up until now we ran a Netscape wireless router off the same modem.
We have connected one of the computers (this one, which I'll call Computer #1) to Time Capsule via ethernet, and the internet speed is excellent .... far better than it had been under our previous set up. However, the other computer (in a room about 30 feet away, and which I'll call Computer #2) has a really weak Airport signal (only the bottom dot in the Airport icon in the Menu Bar showing at any time). We're finding it hard to get a decent internet connection at all. I hasten to add that this was also the case under the previous set up (and one of the reasons we bought Time Capsule in the first place).
Even when I try to get into Airport Utilities on Computer #2, the Time Capsule doesn't always show up as being in range.
I can't seem to see anywhere in systems preferences or Airport utilities where I can boost the signal out of Computer #2's Airport card (an AirPort Extreme card). Does anybody know if there's any way I can do that? Or if there's anything that I'm missing? Thanks for any assistance you might be able to provide.

I have a new AP Extreme and since day 1 it has been anemic at best. My older Linksys router had power to reach about 50% farther.. and it was 801.11 g. For the last few days I have gone around and around with Apple Tech. The problem was my microwave. The problem was my telephone. The problem was always something environmental. When confronted with the fact that my old Linksys system didn't have these 'environmental' problems, I was usually put on hold. Sometimes disconnected.... (sometimes called back by Tech Support-- 3 cheers)
Today all that changed. I got a hold of Bonnie. She had great perseverance and kept working the problem until we got the solution.
We changed the channel to No. 3. Ba boom. Full power everywhere!! It had been on 'automatic' and channel No. 11. Those didn't change the weak, fluctuating (on again... off again.... strong... then weak) signal. Channel NO. 3 did the trick. Why? I don't know. What do the channels do? I don't know.
So, all I say is "try it".

  • Airport Drops Signal - UPDATE, no fix

I've been having the same problem as most of the people in this forum right now. Dropped or weak airport signal, even though your sitting right next to the router. People have seemed to attributed the problem to firmware updates on the card or the basestation. It happened to me right when I updated to 10.4.4 and the APEX to 6.3, right around the time of Macworld.
So I went to the Apple store today to see if the genius bar could help me out. The 2 guys there had seen the problem recently in a few other computers, and we were able to diagnose it as a software/firmware problem. They had no official information directly from Apple about the problem, but assured me that they watch these boards and probably know about this problem.
Their diagnosis was to either send the PB in for a $300 repair, which wouldn't fix it anyway, or wait for the next update and hope that that fixes it. Not the answer that I wanted, but at least I know i'm not going crazy.
Can we find a way to fix it temporarily? Anyone been successful downgrading firmware or doing an erase and install? Has anyone had a different result finding a fix? I'm really not enjoying being tethered to my 20 ft ethernet cable right now.

I actually tried that a while back, but no luck. It doesn't seem to be an issue with my basestation. I know alot of people have had fixes when they downgraded firmware in their Airport Extreme Base Stations, but for me, its and issue with my Powerbook.
I know this because i'm using a Dlink router. But i tried my APEX basestation and still no luck. Went to my mom's house and couldn't see her network. Tried it at work and weak and dropped signal there. The final nail in the coffin was at the Apple store where I could barely pick up their network while I was surrounded by macs that had full signal.
I did an archive and install, downgraded to 10.4, and then tried to install the updates one by one, no luck. I checked the firmware on the card, which said 3.5.something, but it was still not working. I went throught all the updates and the signal never got better. I set-up new users, trashed preferences, reset PRAM, fixed permissions, all the regular stuff, still broken.
I KNOW it's an issue with my computer, not the basestation. I did get a pop-up window that asked me to upgrade my airport when i installed the 10.4.4combo update. I'm wondering if that did it.

  • Address book won't re-import .abbu file

Searching in my address book didn't work anymore so I exported the whole address book as an .abbu file and deleted all entries. Now when I try to import that file, it looks for busy for a few minutes and then ends up having no entries. I tried disconnecting from the internet as I read somewhere to avoid interference with iCloud. I also tried creating a new account and import it there so I could change it into vCards, but it wouldn't import there either. It's a 1.3 GB file. I don't have a back-up file or something I can use instead (which wouldn't be up to date) and unfortunately it already synced with my iPhone which has now an empty address book. I also opened the .abbu file and tried to import the .abcdg files but that doesn't work either

    Putnik,
Thanks!  This was the exact solution for me.  Problem: .abbu loaded then disappeared in a few seconds.  As soon as I read your post, it was obvious that iCloud was wiping out the reload, because it had taken a fresh—and empty—copy right after I created the .abbu file.  My configuration is basically a MacPro via Ethernet to an Airport.  A MacBook  via Ethernet and WiFi to the Airport, and an iPhone WiFi to the airport.  The situation at it’s worst had no data in the MacBook, MacPro, iPhone Or iCloud.  What I did have was the good .abbu file.
    My solution:
       1. Move the good abbu file to the MacBook.
       2. Pull power from the Airport—kills all local Ethernet and WiFi.
       3. Put the iPhone in airplane mode just in case—probably not needed.
       4. Do a local import from the .abbu file on the MacBook to the address book on the MacBook .
I now have a clean copy of my thousands of irreplaceable contacts on the MacBook .
I'm pretty sure that since the data in the MacBook address book has most recent date stamp, all will be well, i.e., the MacPro, iPhone and iCloud will  sync to the MacBook . But I figure good logic says to think that through a little more, pour a few fingers of Scotch, then synch everything else tomorrow.  The contacts  on the MacPro are what I need for work now.
<Apple: BTW, You did iCloud well, solid, and fast‑Woulda been nice if you had documented how it REALLY works  also. Need any good tech writers who understand both software and hardware?   >
