Weak signal after renaming network

This is so strange-- I renamed my network and now reception is very weak (one or two bars)!
The only thing I did was to rename the Extreme and then reset my airport express to play iTunes.
Can anybody please give me some tips to increase wifi strength?
Thanks.

Thank you for your prompt response. Updating the firmware, restarting Extreme, turning Airport on and off... nothing seemed to work. In the end, I yanked out the ethernet and plugged it directly into my MacBook, then restarted. I plugged the ethernet back into the Extreme and presto! --Back to a full signal. I guess sometimes there's not a logical explanation for things. Your reaching out much appreciated.

  • Laptop Picks Weaker Signal on Extended Network, Why?

I've got an Apple Airport Extreme Router b/g/n and am using a Apple Airport Express Router b/g/ to extend the network. It actually works pretty **** well, giving a big signal way out into the backyard.
Here's the rub. My 'g' laptop, a Dell D620, always goes for the Apple Airport Express Router, even if the signal from the Apple Airport Extreme Router is twice as strong. The Extreme is channel 6 and the Express is channel 1. I can have the laptop right in the room with the Extreme and it will attempt to pick up the weak signal from the Express instead.
Any suggestions on this? Is it a quirk in the network extension that can be addressed? A consequence of mixing the Extreme and the Express?

It is actually on g/b/n. When I switch it to n (at least 5GHz, it totally disappeared from available connections.

  • Airport Extress lost after renaming network

    Good morning
I had been having trouble with my Time Machine backups, so as per advice elsewhere on the forum I renamed the network due to having spaces and punctuation in the name - from Mathew Prior's Network to mpnetwork
Now I seem to have lost my Airport Extress, which was configured to extend the Time Capsule's wireless network to the further rooms of my house.
    Please can you help?
    Many thanks

Since the Express is still on the old network name that you gave it, and that network no longer exists, the AirPort Express is "lost"
You may be able to "see" it if you temporarily connect an ethernet cable to it and open AirPort Utility. You'll need to change the settings on the Express to match the new network name that you have established.
If Airport Utility does not "see" the Express, you'll need to hard reset the device by holding in the reset button until the amber light begins to flash more quickly. After this, you need to reconfigure the Express again with the new settings.

  • Air port has weak signal after snowleopard upgrade

Recently i downloaded snow leopard onto my computer and now i get no signal for my air port but perfect internet strait from the modem. Can anyone help?

    Hello jakz,
I would to suggest to try clearing the Browser cache and then re-insert the battery, Open the Browser> Select the Menu (3 dots)> Select Privacy and Security> Clear Cookies and Other Data.
In regards to your BBM, when you go into the Hub does it display a red star next to BBM but no new notifications?
    Thanks.

  • AEX weak signal after years OK

    Hi,
For a week or 2, my AEX signal has been extremly poor in other rooms than where the AEX is. To the point I can get disconnected if I'm not in plain view of the AEX, approx. 10m away.
I decided to measure the exact values with istumbler, and I found that it's max 30% signal strength, and no more than 60% 1 meter away from the AEX (respectively -85/-90dbm and -60/-90dbm signal/noise ).
I tried all the 13 channels, different laptops, and disconnected everything that could interfere, with no help.
are these numbers OK ? (I'm sure I really did have better signal before, I even used to watch movies over wifi in the other room) and if not, what could cause such problem ? could the AEX be damaged in some way ?
next week I will try to measure the signal with the AEXs at work to compare the numbers.
    any advices? thanks.

    Hello
I am having a similar problem. I just stream music and it has been working fine for years. My son changed the configuration by removing some of his equipment and I have to do a hard re-set. I got the system up and running again, but the music is choppy, stopping and starting a lot sometimes. My buffer size is set to large. My computer is upstairs and the Airport express is just downstairs, they are almost on top of each other. What can be done to improve streaming?

  • Weak Signal or No Service after upgrading  firmware 1.1.2

I live in Los Angeles, Hollywood area, and for the past 2 months have had nothing but headaches with weak signal strength, no signal, dropped calls and slow data service. Sometimes the phone will have 5 bars then go down to zero bars or no signal without even moving! I think it must be the iphone/at&t service/software, since my friends on standard phones with AT&T seem to not have these issues.. I have seen on other message boards that other iPhone users around the country are experiencing similar issues...
No one seems to answer my question, "Could this problem be related to the Edge/3G combination have anything to do with this problem? The first 5 months of using the Iphone, I only noticed slight weak signal problems, generally related to having the wifi radio on. But this problem is occurring with wifi off. I have Reset the Phone, restored the phone, re-seated the SIM card, check to ensure SIM show no physical damage, all to no avail. You folks need to give me some real answers, and not just the standard we don't know. Now I must add there are some places like 6700 Hollywood Bl. where the signal is great both Voice and Data, but a 1700 N. Las Palmas the signal drops off to one bar, and at 1737 N. Las Palmas Av. it goes to No Service. Please help Please help!

You folks need to give me some real answers, and not just the standard we don't know.
Firstly, "we" folks here are iPhone users, just like yourself, not Apple employees (though there are a few who sometimes post here of their own volition, and not because they have to). So your problem will be answered or advised on depending on our own experiences with the iPhone. To that point, I am in the UK, and am one of those people who have suffered from exactly the same problem as you: my iPhone gets very poor reception in areas where other 02 (UK network) phones get near perfect reception. There is a rather long thread on this topic, and another similar one which was started when the original was locked by the mods. I'm afraid that after much troubleshooting, we are still no closer to finding the source of the problem. What seems pretty clear is that the iPhone antenna probably isn't as sensitive as those of other phones. Also, it's on the bottom of the phone, so can be covered with your hand causing a drop in signal strength. It may also be that in an attempt to conserve battery life, the iPhone doesn't boost the signal as much as it should. But there are all speculations at the moment.
You best best is to communicate your feedback directly to Apple at:

  • Weak signal from Airport Express on extended network

I'm receiving only 2 bars from my Airport Express even with devices right next to it (see attached pics). I've reset the Airport Express and the extended network setup goes fine there's just a weak signal. If I take my devices to the modem router I get a full signal. Any ideas?
    iPhone 5S
    iPad Air 2
Cisco Linksys Dual band wireless N modem Gigabit router

The AirPort Express does work with virtually any wireless router for AirPlay or a remote printer.
Unfortunately, you must have missed the following clear statement in the product information for the AirPort Express regarding extending a network.
If you already have a wireless network in your home and want to extend its range, AirPort Express can help. Just place it in range of your primary base station — an AirPort Extreme, AirPort Time Capsule, or another AirPort Express

  • Weak Wifi signal after upgrading Iphone to 4.1

I had a perfectly working Wifi home connection on a new iPhone 4 running 4.01 and 4.02.
After upgrading to 4.1 yesterday, the wifi has gone bad: the connection strength has dropped - at least- 10 fold. I have to stand next to the router to get connected. Before I had excellent connection at long distances.
Nothing has changed to the router, and I still have excellent wifi connectivity with my MacBook, iPad, and another iPhone.
Seems that the upgrade to 4.1 somehow broke the wifi connectivity.
    Help!
    S.

I am experiencing hte same thing. Except I started with 4.1 and I am getting very weak signal compared to my buddies iPhone which is also running 4.1. Which is weird .. I guess I will call in tommorow any ideas ??

  • Airport Extreme - Weak Signal - 2 meters away

I just bought an airport extreme and after connecting it to the ADSL modem, my iMac is getting weak signal at times, down to 6 bar out of 15 bars. I don't get this problem with my old Netgear Wireless G router. There is no obstruction between my airport extreme and my iMac (about 2 meters away). Is there something I missed, please help.
Note: I noticed that my neighourhood has at least 6 - 7 open network (unprotected) and my iMac can see most of them, could that be the cause of my weak signal?

Pointdexler, Welcome to the discussion area!
Yes RF interference can cause problems with you trying to receive and connect to your wireless network. Try changing the channel used by the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) to one which is far away from those used by your neighbors.

  • MacPro n card in MBP weak signal...this a possible cause?

After adding a MacPro card to my MBP CD I was surprised to see a weak signal when using an n enabled network (AEBSn). I was also surprised to see that g performance and signal strength was weaker also.
I know I wasn't alone in wondering why, but I think I may have found out the cause. Everyone knows that the C2D MB and MBP uses a 3 antenna array on a Atheros chip...however, the MacPro, AppleTV and probably the iMac all use a 2 antenna connection Broadcom card. Why only 2 antenna? Well, I think (from what I have read) that the 2 antenna leads are actually coaxial cables with a antenna within a antenna...what I think is called a 2x2 antenna array, allowing for MIMO and the high n rated speeds.
Thoughts? This has been bugging me since I installed the card and I just could not understand why I would lose so much signal and gain so much noise. Curious to see what everyone else thinks.

    Same.. ish..
    had a DG834G.. all fine..
    gave it to inlaws..
    got a DG834N
Apple genius said coz the imacG5 is G connected all is G.. fair enough kinda guessed that.
    So hard wired the G5.
MBP still drop to 2 bars then hangs.. never had this with G.
AppleTV is further away and is 4bars fine.
Put MBP where imac is.. 3 bars.. itunes 720p footage stutters where same clip on iMac running atG would stream fine.
Think the MBP wireless is pretty pants, fine for surfing..
What i didnt know, as speed of wireless gets faster.. ie file transfer.. range drops.. so I get hangs on file transfers.
Gonna drop the router back to G in the morning see if that sorts it.

  • I bought my iPhone 4 open line in Vancouver, Canada last week for use here in my home base in Bangkok, Thailand.  But when I tried using my Thai sim, I get a very weak signal, if not a weak signal, then a no service status.  What do I do?

I bought my iPhone 4 open line in Vancouver, Canada last week for use here in my home base in Bangkok, Thailand.  But when I tried using my Thai sim, I get a very weak signal, if not a weak signal, then a no service status.  I also have very weak wifi reception.  What do I do?
    I already tried the following:
    a. Turned the phone off and then on.
    b. Checked all wifi connections – no problem given that all our laptops and desktops can connect seamlessly.
    c. I tried restoring the phone to original factory settings via itunes
    d. Tried resetting the phone.
    e.     Tried different microsims from all networks
    f. However, all methods failed given that the network reception is very weak and often reflects – “no service”.  And with regards to the wifi reception It has difficulty in reading even the signal right in front of the wifi router.
I went to two Apple resellers here in Bangkok and requested that they please look at my Iphone and have it serviced.  I was frustrated when they said that given that I bought my phone in Canada, they are not able to support me and should instead try to contact the Apple store in Canada.
I went to apple.ca website and went to the expresslane support and I was said to register and callback.  Tried calling the 1800 number but given that I was in Thailand I had difficulty getting a connection.

I couldn't find the edit button on my original post so I am posting an update here.
I have gone through more apps and have had good luck on all but one more.  And it's not that the app doesn't work, I am talking about the Yahoo Weather app, It works fine, but when you swipe between cities the screen lags a bit and it sometimes doesn't move between pages the way it should.  On iOS 7.1.2 it was smooth as butter but on iOS 8.0, not so much.  I will post a note in the app store to let them know.  I really like the Yahoo app better than the new stock app.
I have been going through my games and they all work fine. Angry Birds (Original and Stella), Canabalt, Minecraft, Bejeweled 2, Silly Walks, PopWords, Doodle Jump, Deep Green all seem to work just fine.
Starbucks app works as it should.
I will stop back again next week after I have had the weekend to play with it in detail and post my thoughts again.

  • E1200 - Had a weak signal and slow speed

Pros: Price, nice sleek shiny box, kind of worked when new. Good as a paperweight in a light breeze.
Cons: Not really a good doorstop - too light. Died at 35 days of ownership. Won't let me in to the web interface to make some changes. When working it had a weak signal and slow speed. Doesn't support access point mode like my old wireless router did.
Other Thoughts: Not the first time I'm had problems with Linksys/Cisco branded products but this is the last product I'll ever buy with the Linksys/Cisco name on it. Fact is ever since Cisco bought out Linksys, every product I've bought from them had failed/died within a few months. You'd think they would get this right by now but they haven't.

There are many reasons why you experience poor signal or connection. Well, there are few things you should keep in mind with regards to N routers:
    1) For the best possible speeds, you need to be using WPA2-AES as your security mode. Any other security mode will see your speed/range capped.
    2) Make sure the drivers for the Wireless Card for the computers should be updated as well..
    3) The router by default uses a channel setting of auto, which means that it would keep switching channels depending on the interference. I’d recommend you set it to a fixed channel. Usually, 1, 3, 6 and 9 give you the best performance depending on your environment of course. I’d suggest you try different channels, observing each for a while, to see which gives you the best performance. You can follow the link here on how to change channels.
Second, all Linksys/Cisco can work as an Access Point. There are two (2) ways to cascade a Linksys router to another router:
    1. LAN to LAN – Connecting one of the Ethernet ports (LAN ports) of the Linksys router (router A) to one of the Ethernet ports (LAN ports) of another router (router B).
This type of cascading requires the main and the secondary router to be on the same LAN IP segment to allow the computers and other devices to connect to both routers.  This configuration is recommended if you want to share files and resources within the network.
    2. LAN to WAN – Connecting one of the Ethernet ports (LAN ports) of router A to the Internet port (WAN port) of router B.
This type of cascading requires the main router and the secondary router to have different IP addresses.  This connection makes it easier to identify which router the computers and other devices in the network are connected to since they will have different LAN IP segments.  However, computers that are connected to router A will not be able to communicate with router B, and vice versa since they are two different networks.

  • My ipad frequently says "I am not connected to internet" although it is and there is a good signal. after a while it connects regularly. what could be the problem?

my ipad frequently says "I am not connected to internet" although it is and there is a good signal. after a while it connects regularly. what could be the problem?

You can try these things and see if it helps.
Tap Settings, then tap Safari on the left side. Then on the right side - tap clear history, clear cookies, clear cache. Clear all three. Reboot your iPad. Hold down on the sleep button at the top until the red slider appears and slide to power off. Then hold down on the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and the iPad will restart. Launch Safari and see if helped.
If that doesn't help, try this. Tap Settings, then tap General on the left side, then scroll down on the right side and tap Reset, then tap Reset Network Settings at the top. Reboot your iPad as described above. Launch Safari and log on to the Internet. You may have to enter your network password again when you reset Network Settings.
Renew the Lease in WiFi by going to Settings>WiFi>Network Name>Renew Lease. Reboot your iPad and try Safari again.
