Wear leveling count Samsung SSD 256gb

Hi guys
I have a 2011 Mba (core i7 and got lucky getting the 256gb ssd from Samsung on my Mac-), It is my first Mac after 14 years of PCs with Windows.
I am not sure about the "wear leveling count" on the drive. Neither am I sure about the program I am using for reading the attributes, whether it's good or not (SMART Utilities)
I have basically done only surfing, no downloading, only 2gb music on it that I transferred from my old computer. So That's why I think it is a little bit strange, if I haven't even transferred my personal files yet and I am seeing this.
The "wear leveling count"
(Raw) = 1
Value = 99
Worst = 99
Threshold= 17
Should I start worrying? I also attached a screenshot of the SMART results.

"Raw" is the data attribute the drive itself outputs, when the drive is tested. The value itself may not correspond to an actual "human readable" figure, but one that needs to be "translated" to achieve either a relative, interpretive value, or an actual normalized value.
Most of the normalized values in the SMART test are interpretive values, relative to a possible high good score, say of "99".
An example (not from this app): A device may output a Celcius temperature reading. The program might be set up to display that reading in Fahrenheit. Therefore, the raw might be (0) zero, but the "normalized" figure would be then displayed as "32".
Another example might be that the device outputs a figure of 1,000,000 (one million), but the threshold "bad number" is a raw 10,000,000,000 (ten billion). The normalized figure might be a score of "99" out of a possible "99", and the worst it ever tested was "99" as well.

My MacBook hard drive is full again. I have a 13in. Aluminum, Late 2008 MacBook, and about 18 months ago (in October 2013), I replaced the original hard drive with a Samsung SSD 840 Pro Series 256GB hard drive. However, my MacBook is now already saying that my hard drive is full again. When I check "System Information," under "Storage," it states the following: Audio 52.02 GB; Movies 33.68GB; Photos 43.13GB; Apps 14.76 GB; Backups 174.4 MB; and Other 96.39GB.
Also, at home, I have an Apple Time Capsule 4th Generation 2TB that I use as my wireless router, and I also use it for automatic backup via Time Machine. And when I first purchased Time Capsule, the first time I connected Time Capsule, Time Machine asked if I would like to use it to back up my files, and I clicked, "Use as Backup Disk." And that's really all I've ever done with Time Capsule.
In addition, I also have a LaCie Porsche Design P'9223 1TB external hard drive. I have copied my MacBook's hard drive onto my LaCie external hard drive.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Obviously the Audio, Movies, Photos, and Apps are taking up a lot of space... Any suggestions re: what I can do with Audio, Movies, Photos, and Apps? And what about the Other? Other is taking up 96.39 GB. What is Other, and what can I do about it?
And what about partitioning my hard drive... Is that something I should do? Should I partition, or configure, my MacBook's internal hard drive differently? And should I partition, or configure, my external hard drive? And if I need to partition, or configure, my MacBook's internal hard drive differently, how do I setup Time Machine to backup per any such changes? Same thing for my external hard drive?

Partitioning makes no sense. You have a drawer full of stuff. Split it into two smaller drawers and you have two smaller drawers full of stuff.
Decide what you can store on external storage - your iPhoto/Aperture/Lightroom libraries can all be stored on externals, as can your iTunes Libraries and so on. Do you need to carry 30 gigs of movies with you all the time? You can get portable drives the size of an iPhone these days.

My AS-SSD results seem low for X120e and Samsung 470 256gb SSD

Someone wanted to know my results in AS-SSD for a Samsung 470 256GB in a X120e. I did check in BIOS and disk is set to ACHI. Results seem a bit slow:

SSD wear levelling with GPT partitioning

does GPT help with SSD wear levelling? Is data written randomly to the physical drive, while the GPT table keeps track of which is what? I ask because it is recommended to have a single partition on an SSD for wear levelling. However, I would like to partition it to multi-boot several distros. It seems that GPT behaves like LVM because when I resize a gpt partition, it is done instantly (very quickly), as if data is not being physically re-allocated. On the other hand, it could be because my SSD is almost empty--very few personal files and the rest is just linux. So, this is why I asked the question. The other advantage of partitioning is that the dd command will run much faster and produce smaller image files, which allows me to do incremental backups.

Not exactly what I meant. Some online discussions suggest that partitioning will confine disk read/write activities to a certain region of the SSD, thus wearing it out quickly. On the other hand, other discussions suggest that wear levelling protection happens at lower level by the SSD controller which is indifferent to partitioning--as far as it is concerned, partitioning is just data organization at the OS level. So, you can partition as much as you want and the wear levelling protection will still evenly distribute writes across the entire SSD, regardless of the partitions boundaries.
When I used to resize partitions on my HDD with MBR, it took a very long time because data had to be re-arranged. However, when I resize partitions on the SSD with GPT, it happens instantly as if the data are never re-arranged--only the partition table is modified.
Is this due to using GPT or is it because SSD wear levelling protection does not care about partitioning, be it MBR or GPT?
Ultimately, I want to make sure that creating 10 partitions, and using one of the partitions frequently with my main distro, is not going to wear out the SSD prematurely.

Block level backup engine Samsung SSD 840 EVO partition labeled "data"

Replaced the hard drive in my Dell 1545 laptop with a Samsung SSD 840 EVO.
Everything beautiful.
Am running Windows 8.1 - again everything beautiful.
Thought I would run "System Image Backup" (off the File History page).
failed - Microsoft error code 0x80780119
because Samsung Migration tool created a first partition labeled "data"
(don't know whose data this might be suspect it has nothing to do with the OS but is required for the SSD, perhaps for MBR boot purposed.)
This "data" partition is very small and 99% full: no room for the VSS backup requires.
Bypassed that problem with:
PS C:\> wbAdmin start backup -backupTarget:H: -include:C:\
which runs perfectly, except for the warning,
" Note: the list of volumes included for backup does not include all the volumes that contain operating system components. This backup cannot be used to perform a system recovery. However. you can recover other items if the destination media type Supports
it."

on Samsung will be familiar with this partition.

Samsung SSD causing problem with upgrade from Windows 8.0 to 8.1

I'm having trouble upgrading my HP Desktop from the OEM installed Windows 8.0 to 8.1. I first attempted the upgrade when 8.1 was first rolled out. It seemed to upgrade okay, but after a reboot I was left with a black screen... no error messages, just a black screen.
I retried it this morning, but this time it failed with DPC_Watchdog_Exception and then Machine_Check_Exception. After searching through several forums, I'm "guessing" it may be Disk 0, which is a Samsung 830 Series SSD (Model: MZ7PC256/0H1, s/n: S0U3NSAC705912, p/n: MZ7PC256HAFU-000H1) that was installed and configured by HP when I ordered this desktop in 2012.
Samsung's Magician software doesn't recognize this SDD as a supported product, but they do identify it as a Samsung MZ7PC256HAFU-000H1, with Firmware version CXM05H1Q. I thought I'd see if a firmware upgrade was available, but there's no information about this SSD on Samsung's support site. Also, HP doesn't offer any firmware for this SSD... not even the original firmware. Everything I've seen on the internet says it's a custom OEM SSD that's not supported by Samsung.
I'm not desparate to upgrade to Win8.1, but I would like to know exactly why the upgrade keeps failing. I have another SSD available (a Samsung 850 Pro, model: MZ-7KE256BW) that I've considered using to replace the current Drive 0, but I hate swapping out parts without knowing it's actually the problem.
I'm open to advice. The info on my current system follows. Also, I should point out that there are no device conflicts nor outdate drivers.

Hi,
You will find the latest firmware for the Samsung 830 at the Samsung SSD download site. Additionally, you will also find the latest version of the Samsung Magician.
Backup your data and be sure to create the external HP recovery media.
I prefer not to clone but rather to use the external HP recovery media to load the SSD.
If you are not on the latest SSD firmware then flash the SSD. Use the latest version of the Magician to do so.
Disable Secure Boot in the BIOS before cloning the hard drive.
Then reformat and clone the SSD using the latest Samsung migration software. Use the original HP hard drive as the source and it needs to be intact as you need to bring across all of the partitions.
Power off the PC and disconnect the original boot HD.
Connect the SSD to the original boot SATA port.
Do not have any other SSDs or hard drives connected that contain an EFI partitions or you might run into issues with multiple Windows boot loders.

Dell PERC H710P and Samsung SSD 840 Pro RAID performance

Hi. I have some questions about Dell PERC H710P.
I have a Dell PERC H710P RAID controller and 8 Samsung SSD 840 Pros.
I created virtual drive on 8x256GB Samsung SSD 840 Pro in RAID10.
And tried DD test (bs=512kb, count=20000) in CentOS 6.3.
But I had just around 370MB/sec.
Is there any problem of my test?

ive also had trouble with the Samsung 840 pro (256 GB) and my Dell Perc card. i have the smaller one the H310 though.
sent the drive back to samsung (their tech sup is horrid) and got it back. still an issue.
i think that it just a Dell mobo issue. we are waiting on ours to be replaced.

Battery Wear-Level overnight feels too High!

Hi,
Usually i rarely use battery (always put the battery out after charging it) except when i need to take my 4-months-old B480 laptop outside (which is rarely happened)
Yesterday i leave my battery with ac adapter plugged-in while downloading a large file from internet, i set start charging threshold at 75% and stop at 95% (as many people said it's better not to fully charge the battery), and on the next day i see my battery wear-level became 13% O.o while cycle count is only 5
I think it's too high for a one-night charging, my old laptop (non-Lenovo) didn't gets this high even when i leave it with ac adapter for days.
Is this wear-level normal for a one-night charging? (at-least for lenovo laptop that is)
Does warranty covers an abnormal battery wear-level?
PS: one of the reason i choose lenovo laptop is because it has customizable-battery charging threshold feature which many people said can be used to prolonged battery lifespan(minimizing wear-level by not fully-charging it and not discharging it too low) even when used with ac adapter, while not many other brands have this kind of feature.

A usual sign of an imminent battery failure is when it wears out the charge in an abnormal rate (battery goes down to less than 20% overnight after a full charge when unit is off or in sleep state). Sometimes heat can also be a factor to shorten the battery life as discussed in this article.
To further test the health of the battery, You can try Passmark's BatteryMon. If the battery is failing, you may contact Lenovo for a battery replacement. Support phone list here.

Will this Samsung SSD be as fast as apples default Flashdrive if mounted in 2013 mac pro.

The EVO 128GB has been tweaked to be almost as fast (pre-EVO were not and while slow/slower were still a significant boost).
Price of 250GB EVO is $139. Get that instead IF you have pre-2013. Then whether or not system or for data or scratch, and might want $99 PCIe SATA 6G controller.
SSD blades for 2013 nMP 6,1 upgrades should eventually, Samsung plans to offer retail kits, as will OWC and others.
Crucial too. And they have their newest 550M.
Pricing on 500GB EVO $279.
btw, 128GB is probably not a good idea - too small when you only have one, and that would be a downgrade from the default 256GB.

Toshiba SSD vs Samsung SSD and inconsistent read/write speeds

I've heard that some of the 2011 Airs are shipping with Toshiba SSDs where others have the Samsung SSDs. Apparently the Toshiba ones are considerably slower and are more likely to be in the 13" models where the Samsung SSDs are more likely to be in the 11" models. I was curious if anyone out there has an 11" model with the 256GB option, and if so, which SSD did you get in yours? Are you looking to get a response from Apple here? If so you're going to be left wanting. This is a user-to-user discussion forum, if you wish to communicate with Apple you'll need to get on the phone with AppleCare or bring it into the store.
You can also return the machine and buy a new one, it's a 50/50 chance.
I have the Toshiba drive in my 13" MBA with the 128GB SSD. A co-worker has the same model machine with a Samsung drive.
As Apple doesn't promise a minimum SSD read/write speed I don't really see any justification for them to offer an exchange on a unit unless it's defective (which this would not be considered defective in their eyes). Thus my recommendation for the return. The other problem is there's no discernible markings on the outside of the box that indicate which drive is in the machine, plus Apple doesn't let you "try before you buy."
Even given the slower Toshiba speeds, I'd be really curious to see someone max out the capabilities of either drive.

I purchased this drive and installed it in my MacBookPro about a week ago.
Since then I have repeatedly run system-reported data corruptions on the SSD.
One obvious sign of the corruption is that on powering-on the laptop, it will stall for a long time (5 to 30 minutes! - normally it would boot up in about 30 seconds) after the grey/black Apple-logo and status bar appear on the white-background boot-screen.
Another way I see this is by running Disk Utility's 'verify disk' operation.. Reports serious errors and asks me to reboot in recovery-mode with Cmd-R to repair the partition.
I have erased and re-installed the OS (Yosemite) several times on it already because sometimes the Recovery-Partition's Disk Utility cannot repair the errors - asks me to backup and erase+format. The repair operation does not always succeed *.
This is happening often and without any pattern **.
Several times on the latest install, I have booted up in single-user mode and run fsck -fy: till yesterday, this was still occasionally finding and successfully repairing issues (after which I run fsck a couple more times to confirm).
Seems to be running fine today.
* I am re-installing off of a TimeMachine backup.
But I don't think that is causing the trouble: verify-disk on the original backup reports no errors, and even the computer itself passes "verify"/"fsck -fy" several times over before failing in the same way again after an hour or 2 of actual use.
** On one occasion, after an OS update (latest OS X security patches) succeeded and reboot completed, verify-disk again asked for the Cmd-R recovery-mode repair - which failed to repair the errors.
Also, if I as much as launch the Yosemite installer while booted up, then even after quitting (without proceeding beyond the initial screen), the SSD fails completely again requiring to be erased. Happened twice with installers involved, but corruptions even without installers did happen.

I loaded the Samsung 850 into my 2012 i5 Macbook Pro and it's been working well since I installed a few days ago. The only concern I have is that on boot up I get a white screen for around 30 seconds before it begins the startup with the apple and progress bar. That's odd, because when I installed an SSD on my older 2009 Macbook a few years ago that laptop booted up almost instantaneously when I pushed the power button.
I loaded the system on the SSD by cloning, rather than using Time Machine and it worked without a hitch. Used Carbon Copy Cloner in trial mode after formatting the SSD with Disk Utilities. Not sure if your problem may stem from using Time Machine. The cloning apps will usually adjust the data on the new drive based on available space, so if your SSB is a different size than the original HDD, it would automatically correct. Not sure about TIme Machine.
I'll keep researching about the startup lag when I turn on my Macbook Pro with the 850. Seems it should boot up right away with the SSD, but maybe it's because the 850 uses the new vertical stacking configuration. That's the only thing I can think of that's different from the last SSD I installed in my old Macbook.

iLife is preinstalled on all the Macs. If you purchased iLife in the App Store or your computer came without DVDs, open App Store > Purchases and download the applications. If your Mac came with discs, insert the Applications DVD and install iLife applications

HP H8-1500z and Samsung SSD - BIOS sees the drive, Win 8.1 doesn't

I'm trying to help a friend (no really!) I've worked in IT support, but this has me stumped so far.
The H8-1500z has an AMD hexacore CPU, and the AMD Raid storage driver. The Samsung Magician software has been run using a USB adapter to clone the internal HHD to the SSD drive, and it seemed to go fine. When all else has failed, the SSD has been bootable as a USB device. So it would seem the SSD is working OK, just not when connected to an internal SATA port.
The current SATA config includes the internal HDD, a four-device memory card reader/writer, and now the Samsung SSD.
The SSD is visible to the BIOS, but not to Windows 8.1.
I switched the BIOS from RAID (the default) to AHCI - the PC still works, but no change. Win 8.1 updates are all installed, and the BIOS reports it's also up-to-date. I've run the HP troubleshooter a few times--it reports it has made changes, but again, no joy.
Samsung tech support wrote this to him:
All Samsung Solid State Drives are compatible with AMD processors. The only known issue with AMD machines is with the Samsung SSD Magician software, in which the native AMD SATA port drivers are not compatible with the SSD Magician software. To remedy this, we simply ask that you install Microsoft SATA port drivers or NVIDIA SATA port drivers and the issue will be resolved.
We've scoured the Micrsoft site and Google on how to "simply" do this. Comparing the driver names for my Crucial SSD drives and his, the three files are the same. I think he already has the drivers installed. The Device Manager lists the "Microsoft Strorage Space Controller." He did attempt disabling the AMD drivers by renaming them; the PC was unbootable. Thankfully he was able to boot off the SSD with USB and put the filenames back and restore bootability.
I've suggested he disconnect the memory card reader to test. He hasn't tried it yet. I'm thinking of bringing my rig over, and seeing if my homebuilt can see his drive, and if his HP can see one of my SSD drives.
We've been at this for several weeks, and I've spent hours on this site and Googling to try and figure out why the BIOS would see the drive, but not Windows.
I really hope someone can point us in the right direction.

Samsung SSD 840EVO not booting from macbook pro mid 2012 after cloning

Hello there,
I guess i'm so stuck with the SSD that i have purchased.
Here is the details:
SSD - Samsung SSD 840 Evo 250GB
MacBook Pro - 13-inch, Mid 2012
Model Identifier: MacBookPro9,2
Processor 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5
Memory 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024 MB
Software OS X 10.9.1 (13B42)
Boot ROM Version: MBP91.00D3.B08
SMC Version (system): 2.2f44
I was running with the factory HDD (toshiba 500gb) and thought of replacing it with an SSD . Tried a clean installation of mavericks at first using Bootable USB drive having mavericks. So i went on and installed the ssd replacing the HDD i had and went on to boot up from the USB, prior the installtion i tired to partition it first with single partition MAC os extended journaled with GUID table. But then it did partition but after that it says trying to reinitialize the drive and it never came back although i tried more than five times. So then i went back to my HDD and tired cloning it to SSD using Carbon Copy Cloner, but even for that i had to do the partitioning which failed. Finally i had to go and return back that peice and they gave me another one convincing me that it might a defective peice.
Now, with the second one, at first i booted up my HDD normally and connected the new SSD the USB/sata converter and i successfully partitioned and using carbon copy cloner, i have cloned as well. Now to make sure if its all ok, before replacing the HDD in the main compartment, i just selected the startup disk as the new SSD and restarted the system... it booted up fine like a cheetah... was all gud... i thought everything is pretty fine. Then ofcourse i went ahead and replaced the HDD and powered up the system again, but then it's not booting up... it gives you that folder with ? mark and that's all...
And then i tried some other ways too... i even checked the firmware versions and i guess they are upto date as well. I just dont get the reason why it's not working.
Please help me.
