Web 2.0 Online Help System

 Hi,
I'm currently using RH 8 to generate WebHelp for various web-based applications. Unfortunately, the help system's appearance has been deemed outdated. I've been tasked with finding an online help solution that provides a cleaner appearance with a blog-type feel that provides a web 2.0 experience. I've provided a few sample online help solutions below.
Sample solutions:
[http://support.twitter.com/ | http://support.twitter.com/]  (sans tweets)
[https://support.skype.com/en/ | https://support.skype.com/en/]
I would be more than willing to update to the latest version of RH if it can deliver this type of solution. Although all suggestions are welcome, the ideal solution should not require a client installation.
Thanks!
Joe

Hi Joe
As my fellow Community Professional Craig indicated above, the two examples do appear to be themed to match other elements of the sites.
Additionally, RoboHelp 8 doesn't offer a simple "make this single option choice" sort of way to create what you are asking about. But that doesn't mean it can't be done with a bit of work. If you were to upgrade to RoboHelp 10, it offers some new HTML 5 layouts that may offer something close to what you are looking for.
If you want to stick with RoboHelp 8, what you might to to get something similar to the Twitter page would be to eliminate everything but the Search field. Then eliminate the left navigation panel. You might even need to consider using ZoomSearch as described on fellow Community Professional Peter Grainge's site at the link below:
Click here to view Peter's site
If you omit the navigation frame as earlier described, you would then need to create a "home" page with links that point to the other pages.
Hopefully this helps... Rick

  • Online Help System for Web Apps

    Hi all,
Does anyone know a good and free online help system for Java webapps, I've tried Oracle Help for the Web and it's nice, except that it won't run on WebSphere v5.1 (which is a requirement).
    Thank you,

    Hi Len
Basically it's like this. WebHelp is nothing more than a collection of HTML pages that each contain different "Topics". This means that each page has a unique URL which may be used to view it. Normally, WebHelp is presented with the surrounding frameset (also known as the Skin) and the Topic is shown in the Topic pane of the Frameset.
What Jeff has shown is what you might get if you just link to the URL of the topic. I say *MIGHT* because whether you see the "Show" link is configurable and you can generate WebHelp where it's not factored in.
So you have many options of linking to your help. You can link to a single topic where only that topic appears. You can link to the WebHelp generically and the end user finds their own way to the information they are looking for. You can link to a Bookmarked location inside a topic either on its own or within the frameset. And if you are using the WebHelp API, you can specify your own Window that will be used. Otherwise, your developer can create the window using their own means.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Creating an online help system from FM files

I have been tasked with converting a 340 page user manual in
FrameMaker into RoboHelp in order to create an online help system.
I have imported all the FM files into RoboHelp. Each Project
file is a chapter from the FM user manual and each topic is a
    subchapter.
Many of the images crossed over successfully. However, many
came across blurry and others didn't come across at all, instead
appearing as a small red box.
I have been unable to figure out how to get the images that
did not come across into RoboHelp.
After compiling and viewing the primary layout - it looks
pretty good (at least to me). The font and styles in RoboHelp are
the same that were in FM.
I am VERY new to RoboHelp and have learned FM primarily
through trial and error with some outside instruction.
I need help in getting the images into RoboHelp and some
advice on whether or not I am on the right track with my online
    help system.

    Hi there Not User Friendly!
Can you give me an URL showing me your online help?
Im about making two huge online help systems, but im new to
    Framemaker and RoboHelp.
One of them contains thousands of pages mades in Framemaker,
the other one is going to be made from scratch.
If you have any advices etc, I would welcome them a lot.
    Thanks in advance

  • Online Help in Web Deployed Forms App

In a Designer generated Forms app deployed across intranet via Forms Server, what options do I have for an online help system? Is Designer's ability to generate MS Help files useful outside client/server environment? Thanks in advance.

I'd also consider checking a test case with Oracle Support to confirm its the same issue as well.

  • FM12-XML online help files

How do I find original source files for an XML-generated online help system created in FM12? What are POM files?
I must take over from previous tech writer to fix the files and regenerate them and I haven't a clue how to do it in FM 12.
I've created online help in the past, using RoboHELP without any coding.
HELP PLEASE. I am under the gun and struggling.
    Thanks.

A quick search on the 'Net suggests that .pom may be
File used by Maven, a Java program used to build Java applications and manage their dependencies; contains build information, such as required software dependencies, dependency scope, and packaging information. […] NOTE: POM files are more commonly seen with an .XML file extension. They most commonly use the filename pom.xml.
    Another post says
Maven POM files are not eBooks. They are configuration files for the Maven software dependency management system for building Java software. […] If the files you have downloaded are indeed Maven POM files, then they are a type of XML text file. You should be able to open them in a web browser or a text editor like Wordpad.
    As for how to start from FM and get to .pom files, I'm afraid I have absolutely no idea. I'll watch this thread with interest … and sympathy :-}

  • Benefits of Online Help vs. Interactive PDF?

Can someone provide me a list of good reasons to create
online help rather than create an interactive pdf? In general this
would be for any type of project. Specifically, the projects would
    be for software support.
    Thanks!

    Hi Cindi,
Thank you for your thoughts. I'm glad you believe online help
is the way to go, because I feel the same way and I am trying to
justify my job. But I am having a hard time putting together a
definative list of reasons. For all of your great ideas, I can come
up with ways to handle this with a pdf that may sound reasonable to
my management (see below). You said the list goes on and on. Can
you please expand on your list? Thanks!
    1. Quick access to up-todate info without having to email,
etc (We would have the pdf accessable from the Web server, Intranet
or Internet and therefore would also be quick and easy to update
and ensure customer is accessing current version.)
    2. Colors, and hyperlinks, and map ids, etc (Pdfs can handle
colors and hyperlinks. We currently aren't using map ids. The ones
here that I think are valuable are pop-up, drop-down, and expanding
links, as well as map ids, which we will potentially use.)
    3. You can add pdfs to an online help system but you can't
add pdfs to a pdf file. (You can link from a pdf to another pdf. A
pdf can also launch a Captivate movie right inside the pdf.)
    4. Document preservation - easy to keep a backup of what a
database instance was at a certain date. (This is only if you have
this feature on your HATT - we currently don't. We source control
outside of our HATT. This would be no different for pdfs.)
    Thanks again!

  • Is Dreamweaver an appropriate tool for creating a Help system?

    Hi,
I have the full Adobe Creative Suite and I'm looking to create a Help system. Is Dreamweaver an appropriate tool for this, or is there another tool that would be better? I don't have Robohelp.
    Robyn

    Hi Robyn
Robohelp and most of the other help systems would be like splitting a nut with a sledgehammer, for what you describe.
You are basically talking about a search system on specific topics, for which Dreamweaver is an adequate tool, it may be worth while incorporating one of the 'smaller' open source help system into your site, in order to achieve your goal.
Your comment on posting to the 'indesign' forum is understandable but not recommenced (there is a great difference between dtp (classic graphic design) and web design / development), especially if you intend to incorporate your current 'user guide' into a web site. Any help system both for a program that you install on your computer or supply as a web site 'help' system can be constructed as a searchable html page (many are html pages now), and you can even use the a major search engine to do this for you, (providing you know how, of course). It is even possible to search pdf's, flash and audio, and provide then as a downloadable / online version as well if you so require.
The one thing you did not say in your reply was how good your programming skills are, (if not very good, do you have someone who can do this for you), as this is what will limit your help / search system. But even here if you incorporate one of the search engines own search api into a basic web page they will index and search your site for you, both as a local search, and as a web search.
Hope this helps, in some way.

  • Does CQ facilitate the development or integration of online help?

My company has used CQ5 to develop API portals. I want to develop a context-sensitive online-help system for those portals. Does CQ facilitate the development of online help for those portals? Does it facility the integration of my online-help system with those portals?

thats a good question. i havent found a "email us" section on the website. i was planning on emailing them untilk i found this. Perhaps a site enhancement would be to add email us.

  • How to create help system in flex?

I want to cerate help system in flex. Previously i have
created online help systems using RoboHelp.
    Please help.

Wouldn't Adobe want to integrate its industry leading
Flash-based help system with its state-of-the-art RIA development
    system.
This must be doable using RoboHelp's WebHelp/FlashHelp
    source.
I would sure appreciate any "help" on the subject.
It's hard to believe that a Flex help system is a "roll your

  • Printing Webhelp Topics from online help

I tried to print off an individual topic from my online help

    Thanks. It worked.

  • Help system bug??

Is it just me or does the new "online" help system in DW CS5 seem buggy? I'm not complaining by any means about DW as a whole. I love it. But Since the help system went online, for lack of a better description, it takes forever to load, everytime I do call it up it has to download an update which creates longer waittimes, and it seems to freeze(lockup) very often as well.
Again, is this just an isolated incident on my end? or is there an issue I should know about? report? Thanks for any input!

The Community Help program can be a bit annoying like that at times. I think that performance is affected by the speed of your internet connection.
Open the Community Help program, and select Edit > Preferences. In the General Settings section, set Accessibility Mode to "Open Help in Browser". That should load more quickly.

  • Online Help for Oracle HRMS Self Service System

I am looking into developing context-sensitive online help for an Oracle HRMS Self Service application. There is currently no online help for the application; all help is provided in printed and online docs, so users are having trouble navigating to the info they need. Help is needed! My initial questions are:
Would I need to create OHJ or OHW?
Could I use RoboHelp to develop the content?
Is there a reference document you can point me to?
    Thanks
    Belinda

    Hi Belinda,
You would create Oracle Help, and then deploy it using OHJ or OHW.
The format of the help is the same. There is nothing specific that needs to be done for one or the other. If your system i s a Web application, you would use OHW and otherwise, you would use OHJ.
You can read more about Oracle Help on OTN at http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/java/help/index.html.
(Read the FAQ for more information about the choice between OHJ and OHW.)
Personally, I would not recommend RoboHelp to create Oracle Help. RoboHelp has a lot of nice features, but the Oracle Help output feature is fairly buggy, especially if you are creating a large helpset, or a helpset that has subhelpsets.
At Oracle, a lot of help development is done using DreamWeaver and an in-house build tool, called the Oracle Help Build Tool. This is available for free. Send me a mail ([email protected]) if you want a copy.
    Regards,
    Pete
