Web browse wakes up external hard drive

I have noticed that when browsing the internet on either safari or firefox, that some web pages will cause my external hard drive (WD 320 firewire connected) to wake up , and start spinning.
What is it about a web page that would cause my drives to wake up? I don't believe this is happening with my internal hard drives, but am not totally sure.
I have also noticed that my external drive will intermittently kick on after my computer naturally goes to sleep (this doesn't seem to wake my computer up though). It just wakes up, spins for about 30 seconds, then goes back to sleep. This doesn't happen when I put the computer to sleep. This is possibly a separate phenomenon, but this might be useful information.

Yes.
Make sure that the New External Hard Drive is formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled).
And then Proceed...
To move the iPhoto Library folder or package to a new location:
Quit iPhoto if open.
Open your Pictures folder and select the iPhoto Library.
Drag the iPhoto Library folder or package to its new location.
After Moving to the New Drive... make sure that all is working to your Satisfaction.

  • Airport Extreme constantly wakes attached external hard drive.

I have a Seagate 1.5 TB drive that I bought in February '09 connected to my 2 month old AExp. For the first two years I had the HDD I was connecting with FW800 to do backups. When I got the new router I figured I'd like to backup more transparently, so I wiped it in Disk Utility and set it up as a wireless Time Machine disk. This has been great, as far as the lack of effort to backup. However, the HDD is constantly waking, spinning up and immediately shutting down. This occurs roughly every 5-10 minutes. It still backs up just fine, I am just concerned about the wear and tear of constant spin ups and shutdowns on a nearly 3 year old HDD. Also, the noise is really annoying. I appreciate any help!

  • PSE-10 how do I import and copy from external hard drive into organizer

Can I import and copy from external hard drive into organizer? Under Get Photos, I select import  from folders/files but after browsing to the external hard drive the copy option is disabled/greyed out. I there a method to import and copy?

That would be mounted as an internal drive and hence the corresponding option is not checked during Import.
Once you import the media form this drive, you can select all and go for File >> Copy/Move files option and copy them wherever you want to.
    Hope this helps
    Thanks

  • External hard drives ejecting after iMac wakes from sleep.

External hard drive keeps ejecting after iMac wakes from sleep. TM does not recognise, so have to unplug then re plug in Ext HD, only then TM will perform a back up. Not seamless backups. Help to resolve would be grand

  • External hard drive won't power back up when iMac wakes from sleep

I have the external hard drive connected via USB. I always put my iMac to sleep before going to bed and I wake it up when I come home from work. Except that when I do, the external hard drive doesn't power up. It still shows in Finder, but clicking on it's folders just opens them up as if they were empty. There's no access noise and the drive can't be ejected.I have to switch it's power off and turn it back on for it to spin back up.
At first I thought it was because I had Energy Saver set to power down the drives whenever possible, which works just fine when it's on, the drive powers on and off as needed just as long as the iMac doesn't go to sleep. I turned it off just to make sure and it made no difference. As soon as the iMac goes to sleep and the drives powers down, it will not come back on without a power cycle once the iMac wakes.
I've used this drive in an old Macbook for years without having this problem. The only difference is that the Macbook was on 10.6.8. I was thinking about buying a 4 bay USB enclosure and filling it up with hard drives, but I'm not about to do that if every time I put the iMac to sleep, the whole thing will not power back on without a power cycle.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Not sure if you managed to get this issue resolved yet Marcus, but I too have a similar problem:
Currently I'm upgrading from Leopard to Lion (via Snow Leopard) on both an iMac and MacBook Pro (both Intel), but before I proceed with the OSX upgrade I wanted to back everything up. Thus far I have partitioned an external firewire drive (G Drive - one that is bootable), and cloned each machine using Carbon Copy Cloner to it's own partition (both GUID). There is plenty of space left over on each partition.
The issue - I can boot the OS X from the external drive on the MacBook Pro but not on the iMac.
When I restart and hold down Option on the iMac the only drive that appears is the HDD, not the other two selectable drives that are visible if I boot up on the MacBook Pro. On the iMac in System Prefs > Startup Disc I can see all 3 drives but when I select it and restart, the machine freezes on the grey loading screen and goes no further.
Not that it should make a difference, but there is a 3rd partition on the external drive that is currently empty (for extra storage).
Any help is greatly appreciated - I can't find any relevant answers elsewhere. Thanks,
    Dan

  • Why does external hard drive have to wake up?

I understand that in Finder if I want to look at a file then it might have to wake up my external hard drive.
Why is it the case that when I perform a seemingly unrelated action - such as bringing up a dialogue box in Photoshop, viewing developer tools in Chrome, or playing the next track of a file sitting on a folder on my desktop - forces the external drive to wake up, and forces me to wait until the wakeup whilst it does so?
Yes, I want the drive to sleep as much as possible. It's only there for time machine backups which I rely on, and the less the drive is spinning the lower the chances are of the drive having an issue. So turning off "sleep when inactive" is NOT a solution.

Not sure why but I had the same issue when I was using FW drives and ML.  Later I upgraded to Mavericks and changed over to USB3 drive with my new Mini and now no longer have that issue.  Must be something between the OS and the type of drive but not sure what the critical component is.

  • I replaced my hard drive and I backed up my files on an external hard drive but when I reloaded my iweb to my imac none of my files were on it so I can't make changes to my Published web site have I lost my files what can I do

I replaced my hard drive and I backed up my files on an external hard drive but when I reloaded my iweb to my imac none of my files were on it so I can't make changes to my Published web site have I lost my files what can I do

By default iWeb keeps its data in (user)/Library/Application Support/iWeb in a file named Domain. Without this file you cannot proceed (other than by recreating the site from scratch using the published version as a reference) so you need to locate it on the original disk.
To confuse matters, Apple have hidden the user’s Library folder in Lion and Mountain Lion to casual viewers, in an attempt to stop new Mac users messing their machines up. To access it, in the Finder go to the ‘Go’ menu and hold down the Option (Alt) key; the Library folder will appear as a choice.

  • My hard drive failed. I was able to restore my files from an external hard drive. I have my bookmarks saved but am not able to import them into Firefox as the only option is to import them from another browser. Any suggestions?

    -My hard drive failed.
-I was able to restore my files from an external hard drive.
-My bookmarks are saved to a folder on my new hard drive.
-I am not able to import them from this folder on my hard drive into Firefox.
    - the only option Firefox offers for importing bookmarks is to import them from another browser...is there another way?

In Firefox the bookmarks are saved in a database file called places.sqlite in the profile folder. If you have got this file from the external hard drive you can restore the bookmarks by copying this file to your current profile folder. For details of the location of the profile folder see either https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Profiles or http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox

  • External hard drive wake up too often

    Hello,
I have an external hard drive connected through USB 3 to an iMac 27" and it wakes up very often, even when it's not used in any work, or when nobody uses the machine. What can be the cause of this behaviour ? "Suspend as soon as possible hard drive activity" is not checked in the preferences.
    Thank you

Using a time capsule will probably be less hassle but it is way more expensive. 1 TB time capsule is around 500 USD, and a external hard drive with same amount is less than 200 USD. So it is certainly cheaper than time capsule. I am still not sure if Time Machine supports backing up on external hard drive hooked up with Wireless Router. But i think i have heard about, Hooking up a portable hard drive to the Airport extreme.
    any suggestion? anyone?

  • MBP always wakes up Lacie External Hard Drive?

Every time I open/ turn on my MBP, my Lacie External Hard Drive automatically turns on at the same time. Is there any way to stop this from happening, so the Lacie only turns on when I want it to?

Not really - the drive wakes up when the FireWire or USB connection becomes active.
One of the unix gurus around here may be able to provide a command in terminal that would disable whatever port your connecting on, but that seems like a rather extreme solution with more than a couple of downsides.
You could possibly generate an AppleScript to automatically unmount the drive after it spins up and is mounted, but that's not really what you're looking for either.

  • "open with" wakes external hard drive

Whenever I use "open with" from the contextual menu or the similar "edit with" in Transmit, the system looks for apps on my external hard drives. This slows things down and unnecessarily wakes the drives.
Those drives are set not to be indexed by spotlight. Is there a way to prevent LaunchServices from looking at them as well, and ONLY look at my primary drive for apps?
    Eric

unmount the external drive and run the following terminal command
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
this will rebuild the launch services database and remove any entries from the external drives from it. however, if you open any folder on the external containing an application, it will be added to the launch services database and this behavior will resume.

  • External Hard Drives not showing up in Premiere Pro Media Browser

Hello All!  My external drive(s) aren't showing up in Premiere Pro... and yes, they were working just fine yesterday.  The internal drives both show up, but the external drive(s) aren't accessible.
At first I thought that perhaps it was the drive (a new USB 3.0 that worked yesterday)... I tried changing the cable, changing the drive, even changing from a USB 3.0 drive to a FW 800 drive.  All show up on my desktop, as well as in other applications (including After Effects, and "other" editing platforms) etc... but none are showing up in Premiere Pro.
FWIW, I tried in both Premiere Pro CC as well as Premiere Pro CS6.  I have tried rebooting the computer, creating new projects, holding down the option key while starting Premiere, using Digital Rebellion's CS Repair... all to no avail.  Any thoughts?
My system is a MacBook Pro (late 2011), 2.4 GHz Intel Core i7 with 16 GB Ram, running Mac OS X 10.8.5
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

  • IMac freezes for a few seconds after external hard drive wakes up

    24-inch iMac, early 2008. 4GB RAM.
I hear my external hard drive spin up as if it's been not spinning (totally possible; I only use it for Time Machine backups and iMovie archive storage)
During this spin-up process, my iMac (Mountain Lion, latest version) freezes momentarily--keyboard, mouse, screen--but audio remains faithful and music keeps playing.
After about 5 seconds of this delay, the thing catches up with itself and everything I was doing during the freeze gets processed and displayed. (e.g., I may have been typing a sentence and didn't hear the disk spin up at first; once the disk "comes back to life" everything I typed appears on screen as if everything was being typed really quickly--as if my keystrokes were just delayed while the disk spun up.)
Anyone know what's going on or have a solution to this annoying problem?
I'm comfy with the Terminal if any uber geeks want to take a crack at it.
    Thanks!

go to apple logo > system preferences > spotlight
    then
    there are two tabs
    choose "Privacy"
drag the external into the spolight privacy section
    OR
hit the "+" at the bottom left > navagate to the external > and choose it
whats happening is that spotlight indexes when you turn it on and potentially slows the computer down
    also
if it is a Time Machine backup it is pointless as Time Machine mirror images your internal drive to the external
    meaning
spotlight has two of the extact same files and folders it has to organize
    aka
    pointless
let me know how it goes

  • How do I restore all bookmarks from an external hard drive to a refreshed firefox?

I just "refreshed" Firefox and lost ALL of my passwords, even though the instructions said they would be saved. I have tried copying them from the Old Firefox Data folder and this does NOTHING. I have all of the data I need on an external hard drive and the ability to browse ( have already found my Firefox profile on the backup drive) and copy and paste data from that drive to my C drive. Please tell me EXACTLY how to transfer my bookmarks to the refreshed version of Firefox. I have YEARS of bookmarks that I CANNOT AFFORD TO LOSE. I will be more than happy to simply restore my old profile even though that will slow Firefox down. That would be a small price to pay, but I must have the bookmarks back. Please help!
