Web download into indesign: anyone want an indesign programming job?

Downloading heavily tabulated and formatted copy from a web data feed. Need to get it into indesign, using the attached XML tags so that the formatting is replicated, without manual effort.  Not my scene.  Can anyone help?

Thanks for getting in touch Harbs.

Then you will see in the list something called Darley pedigrees, click on
that. Go to race index, and then select one or all of the listed results
(ticking the box) and download selected -  apparently this only works in
internet explorer.
You will download an x tags file as a text document - this is what we need
to pull into an indesign doc with the tabs and formatting intact.   I attach
a pdf showing how we currently lay this data out (using a different data
provider who currently does all this for us). As you can see this is over
three columns, and needs the inclusion of wobs etc.
There is another associated job with this, which takes a little more
explanation, but is from the same website and essentially the same - though
the information is just not quite so readily set up.
Looking forward to hearing from you.

  • Quality issue when placing web screenshots into InDesign

    Please, please help!
I am using InDesign CS3. I frequently capture screenshots from web pages to place in an InDesign document as an image.
Without exception, the resulting image quality is lousy.
I have tried capturing screenshots with Screenhunter and with SnagIt. I have played around with the various options in each program (file format - jpg, eps, tif, bmp etc etc etc, resolution, etc) including InDesign. I have tried placing the image first in Photoshop and in Fireworks, saving it there and then placing it in InDesign.
Each time, when I view the image BEFORE placing it into InDesign it looks perfect. Then I either paste or place in the InDesign document and whatever I seem to do, the resulting image looks fuzzy and unclear, both onscreen and when I print (even when I select High Quality display).
If anyone can help, I can send you a document with screenshots pasted in so you can see the poor quality.
PS - Placed photographs or other very high resolution images are fine. It's the screenshots I have a problem with.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help!
    Fiona

I would expect the same quality from InDesign that you get from Word or another MS app.
    >Web screenshots are good enough quality to place them in any Microsoft Office product, even when enlarged to view with a beamer on a wall, they can still look sharp...
Sharp is a relative term. :) Suppose you put a high quality photo in the same page as your web capture. Does the web capture still look as good in Office apps? Viewing distance also makes a difference. The farther away the viewer is, the better a low resolution image is going to appear. That's how billboards work.
You don't say in your original post what you are doing with the ID document.
By all means, send me a document to spammercatch at comcast dot net. With screen captures it probably doesn't really matter since you are capturing the screen, but in general it is bad practice to paste images rather than placing them -- you paste the low resolution screen preview instead of linking the high resolution image data.

  • Anyone want to do a job?

I apologise in advance if this is inappropriate but I have a challenge that I'm wondering if it is possible to automate.  I've also posted it as a question on the InDesign forum here but I think it will only be able to solved by scripting.  So if someone thought it was possible (I also need it in the next 24 hours to make use of it) and was willing to PM me with a quote that would be great.
What I want to do is take a list like this (it would come from Excel and have more entries across the page beside each name):
    Barcelona
    Victor
    Daniel
    Gerard
    Javier
    Eric
    Andres
    Sergio
    Xavi
    David
    Lionel
    Pedro
    Manchester
    Edwin
    Fabio
    Rio
    Nemanja
    Patrice
    Antonio
    Michael
    RyanPark
    Park
    Wayne
    Javier
Now say the page is only long enough to go half way through  Manchester where it breaks I want it to say Manchester continued at the  top of the next page like this:
    Manchester continued
    RyanPark
    Park
    Wayne
    Javier
There is a space at the end of each list segment before the next segment  starts.  The text that is put in would have to come from the name at  the top of the list segment, so in the above example it would have to  look backwards, see "Manchester" and put in "Manchester continued" at  the top of the new page.  Ideally it would also fix the problem that occurs when the heading is at the bottom og a page and the text start at the top of the next by forcing the heading onto the next page.

Thanks Harbs, I hadn't though of using an existing tool like that.  I've downloaded a trial and played around with it but I don't think it will work.  Below is a sample of what I want it looks like now once I've imported it as regular tagged text and applied a paragraph style to the whole thing then used GREP to find and format the headers with another style.  Now what I want to happen is for Arsenal continued to be inserted at the top of the second page.

  • I want to bring in text from Word (and the web) that is already hyperlinked into InDesign. How do I do it while keeping the links active?

I want to bring in text from Word (and the web) that is already hyperlinked into InDesign. How do I do it while keeping the links active?
Whenever I copy/paste from web or Word it removes the hyperlinks.  And when I try to do it by "Place"ing a Word document into my InDesign project it keeps the formatting with it, the rectangles around the text.
I have the latest version of InDesign.
    Any help is appreciated.

Copy-and-paste may not include formatting. A regular import using Place is the best way.
The rectangles around the hyperlinks are just to indicate they are links -- they do not print, but they do show up in your PDF.
You can remove them by double-clicking the hyperlink in the Hyperlinks panel and select "Invisible Rectangle" as type.
Typically, Word hyperlinks are formatted -- blue text, underline -- with a Character Style. If you want to remove or change the formatting, all you have to do is change the character style. My experience, though, is you must check all hyperlinks because for no apparent reason sometimes they appear in the document without the character style.

They're Apple HDV, not ProRes. QuickTime Player on Windows does not have a decoding component for these files--and as a side note, you don't need to install the ProRes decoder since that has been built into QuickTime Player for some time now.
Anyway, you can get a third-party decoder for these files: Calibrated{Q} XD Decode. Note that Apple changed something in QuickTime 7.7 and the Apple HDV clips will not work with it; you'll need to roll back to no later than 7.6.9 to use the component properly. You can get that version here: Old Version of QuickTime Player 7.6.9 Download - OldApps.com.
I have a method of converting these to a format that can be natively handled in Premiere Pro, but it's not really suited for large quantities of files like yours. Calibrated XD Decode isn't exactly cheap ($130 on sale right now), but it will get you up and running with minimal effort--that's probably worth the admission price.

  • Acrobat 5 - Placing PDF into inDesign and Output to Colour Separations are Wrong

Acrobat 5 - Placing PDF into inDesign and Output to Colour Separations are Wrong
I have a 2 Page PDF file from my client which I have to have setup 2UP on 450x320 for Metal Plates for the Press.
I setup my page size in inDesign and Placed each page from the PDF file into the inDesign Document.
Because I need 4 Metal plates (CMYK) I had to check the Colour Seperations for the file by outputting it to a Postscript file with CMYK SEPS and then using Adobe Distiller to turn it into a PDF file for me to view the Seperations.
As I've shown in the screen shot below. The CYAN plate has boxes all around the images in the PDF file which will come out on a Metal Plate.
Compared to the Colour version of the Client's PDF they supplied me, there is no boxes around the images.
I know this is a error with dropping a PDF file into inDesign, outputting to a PS file and then Distilling it to the SEPS. I've had the same problem when I've opened a PDF file that has been distilled in Illustrator and the Artwork is sliced into pieces and uneditable.
Has anyone else found this problem and if so is there a workaround?
I'm using Adobe inDesign CS and Adobe Acrobat Professional Version 5.

Im facing a similar kind of problem. I want to store and retrieve Office files, PDF and Jpegs into/from the database to view them on web in disconnected mode. Please reply as I cant find any help/documentation regarding saving BLOB data into files. I was able to store file data into BLOB, using DBMS_LOB package.

  • Drop shadow on eps shape produces fine line when inserted into InDesign and PDF created.

Hi I am having a few issues with an eps file that I have created. Basically it is a eps file with shapes, a gradient and a drop shadow on the outlined text - created in illustrator.
All looks fine until I take it into Indesign and create a pdf. I then get a line around where the drop shadow is. Zooming in doesn’t make it go away, but it also does not change its size.
I have done some research and tried one fix (have the drop shadow as another object using multiply as the opacity) this did not work.
Anything else talks of spot colours (there are none) or just having view ok on the screen (take off smoothing). But none of these are fixes for when I send this image to my client. I also tried saving as different pdf formats but this also does not work.
The only way I can make it go away is to save the file as an illustrator ai file and use that for pdfs. This would be OK, but other suppliers need to use the file and want eps format.
From what I have read, it seems to be a screen artefact and so theoretically should not appear when printed. But I do not know this for sure and I hesitate to send it to the client as it is.
Has anyone seen this before? And are there any fixes (e.g.: treating the drop shadow differently)?
    Thanking you in advance.
    Cheers
    Nikola

EPS is simply unsuitable when dealing with transparency (which is what your drop shadow is). So you need to work with AI for placing in InDesign. If other suppliers need EPS, then just send them that. Nothing should keep you from exporting another file format.

  • Issues importing word into indesign and keeping notes/superscripts

    Hi
I have a job coming up where I will need to import word documents into indesign that come from various sources.
I did some web surfing and discovered I should be able to do it by placing the word document into my template. It seemed to work when I first tried it, but I have now discovered that only the first few notes have from through (first 14 to be precise). Then the numbers disappear (and are replaced by soft returns) until note 33 where they jump back in. But of course this starts at the next number missing, so in this case 15. Which of course means all the numbers are out of order and so need to be fixed.
I would just input or fix manually but as I have 15 stories place and format and the first one has 95 notes... I am hoping to find a less time consuming solution.
I am guessing it is something in how the author has edited the word document, but I truly have no idea.
Any suggestions as best way to overcome this? Ideally something I can ask the authors to fix. Or is there something in the import options?
I am about to get EXTREMELY desperate with this issue.
    Thanking you call in advance.
    Cheers
    Nikola

OK after some more web seraching I have tried saving as and RFT file and that seemed to work. So fingers crossed.
    Using these settings:
If anyone knows why it happened please let me know as it would be most useful.

  • PDF Comments Disappear Upon Placing into InDesign CS5

I am creating an InDesign document in which I need to pull information from several files. One such file is a PDF with comments inserted via the typewriter tool.
Upon placing into InDesign, the comments do not appear, although the original text within the PDF does appear.
Will you please tell me if you know why this happens and if there is a workaround?
    Thank you!

To amplify on my previous response, executing a one line JavaScript will flatten all annotations / comments within a PDF file into the base document. This line of JavaScript is:

This is documented in the JavaScript API Reference that is part of the Acrobat X SDK, freely downloadable from Adobe's web site.
This function is more fully documented in the PDF file I've attached to this posting.

  • Problem downloading Adobe InDesign CS5.5 family

I have subscribed for Online Store Download of Creative Suite CS5. Download of instructions plus the actual product downloaded successfully. Now wanting to continue downloading other downloads seen in my downloads. One I just downloaded is called Adobe InDesign CS5.5 Family. To download without Akamai Manager I downloaded the file using the Alternate Download Method.
So the download now resides on my desktop and a folder is titled Contents. When I double-click it shows font family folders. How do I install them into InDesign? Do I drag the icon onto my InDesign Application Icon...
    Help most appreciative.

  • Open .xml documents into InDesign?

Is there a way to open .xml documents into InDesign, or any Adobe program?
The goal is to access text from a web site feed and place it in an Indesign doc, to create a print product.

You can't open XML but you can certainly utilize it.

  • Converting PageMaker into Indesign

Working on Mac OSX, got PageMaker 7 & Indesign CS2.
I need to convert old pagemaker files into indesign files for reprint.
Has anyone got experience in that?
How to go about it to get the best result?
    Do I need special Plug-ins?
    Brigitte

Sometimes InDesign will ask you to use PageMaker to fix links and such in the file before InDesign will be able to use the file. For that reason, it would be a good idea to keep a copy of PM available on a computer that can run it correctly (one that boots into OS9).
If you have hundreds of PM files, all the more reason, since you won't want to check out hundreds of files on the off chance that you may get an order to reprint a few of them (sort of a waste of time).
I take the philosophy that old files that were built in PM can probably stay in PM, and I'll build new files in ID. Of course, you could open a PM file in ID if you want. Its up to you.

  • Embeding via into InDesign

No matter what file type I try, and what extension I offer, I get an error when trying to add a video via URL. File(s) are Flash compliant and with correct extension )*.F4V)

I've moved your question to the InDesign forum.
The setup for placing Flash files from a URL into InDesign is not well documented. All I can offer is what I wrote in an article in InDesign Magazine three years ago:
"To set up your document for streaming
video, start by creating an empty frame or
select a video you want to replace. Choose
Video from URL from the Media panel menu.
Specify the URL and click OK.

Intro_Video.f4v for a file on a web server. Use
