Web Gallery generation speed is unacceptable

Machine: DP 2 Ghz G5, 2 GB RAM, 160GB disk, 250 GB disk, 20" Cinema Display
Aperture has it's library on the second SATA disk to improve I/O, likewise CS2 uses that disk for it's scratch and Bridge cache.
Task: Generate web gallery, Aperture(Proofs template), Bridge/ACR/CS2(white dots on black background)
-Raw images: Only 10 D2X NEFS
-In both apps all NEFS were tweaked and sharpening applied.
-Thumbnails 200x300
-Enlarged image(after clicking thumbnail) 750x499, JPG quality: Aperture(high) CS2(level 8)
On Aperture I selected "Export Web Pages", not "Publish to .mac"
Both Aperture and CS2 wrote the gallery web dir(under different names) to the same second internal SATA disk.
Aperture took 4:30
Bridge/ACR/CS2 took 59 seconds
Once again Adobe buries Aperture.
This is only one of the many problems with this app.
Note to Apple, if you want to be the leader then you need to beat the leader.
NO, I do not work for Adobe.

For me, the speed of Web page gallery creation isn't of great consequence. I don't make them that often. The speed of comparing images, selecting the pick from a stack, cropping, adjusting color, and so forth is much more important for me.
I've found the selecting tasks to be much faster in Aperture than in iView Media Pro III, which I also use and like. I also use Photoshop all the time (I'm still on CS1) and think its the best program that I've ever used. But cropping and adjusting colors are much easier and more facile on Aperture.
I wouldn't know how to conduct your test. Would I use the automation features to create the Web gallery, loading each image off of the hard disk in turn? If so, first I'd have to convert each to DNG. Then I'd have to adjust each on the fly. That makes no sense. So would I do the adjustments and then save out in PSD or TIFF format? Then the files are much bigger, so the disk i/o makes the test unfair for Photoshop and more about hard drive speed than anything the Apps are doing.
I recognize that other people are having speed problems with Aperture, even in areas where it works well for me. I have tricked out hardware which certainly helps my experience.
If I was making lots of Web image galleries every day, maybe the speed difference of a few minutes vs a few seconds would bother me too. I've noticed that the Web output from Aperture is very sharp with no noticable fringing. I think it looks great. But I also see that adjusting that sharpness isn't an option with Aperture. That hasn't annoyed me yet, but it might on some future project (like a portrait that wouldn't be as flattering if so crisp).

  • Flash Web Gallery Slide Speed Control?

Using LR 1.1 I put together (in the web module) and ftp'd to my web server a number of images of a dog show, as a slide show. I used the basic flash gallery template that comes with LR to do this.
It works just fine for me but some of the viewers have asked for the ability to speed up or slow down the slides. Does LR have the ability to allow viewers to do that?
Or on a more basic level, can I adjust the timing of the changes before I upload the gallery?
I believe there is a speed control when creating a .pdf slide show but I can't find one in the web module.
You can see the show (if you really like dog shows, or just want to see what I am talking about) at http://bobbaron.com/OKCClassic2007BW/index.html

  • Saving progress of web gallery generation when Uploading in Web Module

I have received an error a couple of times while uploading a web gallery to my server. When this happens (usually very late in the progress) it seems like the module has to START generating web content ALL OVER AGAIN. It would be great if Lightroom could save the content generated when encountering an error while performing an "Upload".
Lightroom 1.2, Mac OS 10.4.10, multiple CPUs

I couldn't agree more. This has happened to me a million times. I usually will upload some 400 photos or so for my client and it isn't until the very end sometimes that I will get me error. Then...it's start all over.

  • Freeware Java web gallery software released

    December 2, 2002
I'm pleased to announce that version 1.0 of B*Gallery has been
              released at http://www.brianyoung.net/b-gallery
B*Gallery is a web photo gallery solution based on Java 2, Java Server
Pages and XML technologies. The server component easily plugs in to
your existing web site running on a J2EE-compliant server. A client
application allows for complete gallery management. B*Gallery is
designed to attain a level of flexibility and ease of use that cannot
be reached by solutions which merely generate static HTML pages.
B*Gallery can harvest a photo's Exif data, which is the extended
information written to JPEG files by digital cameras. Panoramic
images created with photo stitching applications are handled
intelligently and automatically by the gallery. Also, a useful file
renaming feature is included to turn generic filenames produced by
digital cameras into meaningful names based on data elements like the
date and time the photo was taken.
Visit http://www.brianyoung.net/b-gallery to view a sample gallery and
download an installer for Linux or Windows.

The ability to produce web galleries is not a central function of LR and as you say there is better software around if this is your main requirement. The limit of 500 can  be over written, usually in the galleryInfo.lrweb file for a gallery, the line is maximumGallerySize = xxxx , but the web gallery generation is designed for professional photographers to create quick galleries for client usage...500 images would be more than enough for the vast majority of users! It is after all, more photographs than on display in the National Photographic Gallery.
As far as the different sizes of images go, this is really dependent on which particular galleries you choose to use (or create for yourself is you wish). The sizes you mention may be the ones that come pre installed with LR (I have never used these so don't know) but there are hundreds of other available, some free, some paid for, or create your own.
The copyright is a small text marking and in relation to any sensible size likely to be used on the web works perfectly fine. If you want to actually watermark an image, rather than just a simple text label, then you require LR2/ Mogrify plug in with LR 2 or use LR 3 Beta which does this natively as part of the export process.
By the way, LR runs perfectly well as a 62 bit application. You may well be missing something...particularity if "every time you click a mouse it redoes every single image you have loaded" as this is not a problem that I associate with LR on systems with far less power than yours.

  • How to speed up loading of web gallery on .Mac??

On my .Mac web pages I have both web galleries created from iPhoto, and Photo Albums created from iWeb. All have been created from high res (8 MB+) image files. In iWeb I choose a smaller file size when uploading, to in turn get a faster loading when people view my site. However, I have not found a way to do this when creating a web gallery. Hence, my galleries load much slower than my albums. Am I missing something? Is there a way built into iPhoto (I have checked preferences with no luck), to make it upload/download reduced size image files? Thanks.

I was afraid of that. Thanks for taking the time to try it out. I guess I'll have to stick to Photo Albums if I want fast loading, but I really like the features of the gallery. Thanks again.

  • How edit web gallery templates?

I created four flash templates a while back. I now want to change the email I entered to a web url.
I do that but it does not stick. I don't see a save button. Any ideas?
Also, for the web url, the font is awfully small in upper right where it ends up. any way to make that bigger? thanks!

Not sure why your changes don't 'stick'. I don't use flash galleries, for a variety of reasons, but I created a small one and changed that field and the data stays there. When I navigate away from that gallery to another one and and then come back it is still set to my web url rather than the 'default'.
I expect the speed of gallery generation is controlled to a large extent by the size of your images and there isn't a lot that software changes can do to speed up that process.
The biggest changes between v1 and v3 are in the image editing capabilities. Sharpening and noise reduction are vastly improved, for example, as is fill light. When I was using v1 I did a lot of external editing in PS, with v2 still some but not nearly as much and with v3 I rarely do any external editing at all.

  • Video plays fine in iMovie but not in Web Gallery ?

    Hi
I managed to import some small video clips to iMovie 08 using Streamclip (converting to .dv files).
The movies play fine in iMovie - no problems. However when I publish to Mac Web Gallery (I only published "mobile" size), one of the videos always hangs at the same point. The clip starts playing but you can see the clip stop loading and then it stops playing at the exact same point about 3 minutes in.
The Web Gallery says the clip is 4mins 36secs long but it never plays it in full. I've removed from Gallery and republished. I've also deleted the project and started from scratch. Both have failed to cure it.
Also tried it in Firefox 3 and Safari - same result.
Why is Mac Web Gallery struggling to play all the clip?
    Thanks for any input!
    Martin

    Which version of iMovie?
If you are on version 8.0.6, this is probably due to the use of speed changes like fast motion or slow motion.
If you have speed changes in your project, you need to stick to the pre-set tick marks of 25%, 50%, 100%, 200%, 400%, 800%, etc. If you use a custom percent like 58% or 139%, you will get weird audio behavior in your final product.

  • Problem using multiple collections in web gallery

I have a web gallery in LR5 that I created in LR2. It consists of four collections with individual titles. When I try to include the titles using the right-hand panel in the web module, when I change the title of one collection, all four collection titles change to that title. I can't give the collections individual titles. I'm using Mountain Lion on an iMac. I didn't have this problem in LR2 and LR3 but I have ever since I upgraded to LR5. Am I doing something wrong?

    Hi,
APEX_COLLECTIONS are special structures that do not have indexes, expect for the one on SEQ_ID. The result is that as the number of collections used in a query increases the number of full table scans on underlying tables kill speed. They are not intended for such heavy use as has been discussed in some of the threads in this forum.
They are extremely useful , but no good for very large data sets or large number of joins. Global temporary tables are also not an option with Apex.
You may have to resort to Materialized Views or intermediate/temp tables to get speed.
    Regards,

  • Transition timings in Web Gallery templates

    All,
Have to admit, I've never delved deeply here, instead building slideshows in Lightroom and iPhoto.  Is there any way to speed up, slow down, etc., the transition timings in the Web Gallery templates provided?  Any way in building User Templates to do it?  I did a search, and found an old 2007 request on LR 1 that went unanswered.
    Thanks.

I never usung LR1. But in LR 3 problem "there any way to speed up, slow down, etc., the transition timings" - Slide Duration in other words... this task solve very easy:
In Slideshow module panel at the right part we have tools that include:
    Options
    Layout
    Overlays
    Backdrop
    Titles
and Playback - that what we need, this tool consist Slide Duration where you can choose in scroll boxes:
Sliders (the sample 4,0sec), Fades (2,5sec)
I think somthing very near (like) must be in oldeer versions of LR.
Hope help u in somesing (so dont foget pushing stars )
    Zhdesigner,
I think what you are saying is that we need those same type tools (slide duration, fading, etc.) in the Web Module.  If so, then I agree.  I do not see anyway to adjust the timings of the Web Module templates.
    Anyone??

  • Playing movies in web gallery

When playing a movie in web gallery I have to wait until the line below the movie slowly crosses to the following side. It is as though the movie is being downloaded before you can play it through. Is this normal, or am I missing out a step before clicking on the play icon?

This depends on the size of your movie file and the speed of your internet connection.
You can either cut the size of the movie file or give your viewers a description of the move to read while it downloads. The latter also gives the Google spiders something to report about your web page as they can't watch the movie!

  • Ability to download full size originals from web gallery.

Unlike the pros that sell their stuff online and are concerned about people downloading usable photos, I shoot a lot of community and family events and would like a way to allow folks to download full size printable photos from the web gallery. This would keep me from getting hammered for printable files, which of course are larger than the email attachment limits for most people and thus require a sneaker-net or snail-mail delivery.
Specifically, I'd like to see a gallery similar to what we have today, with thumbnails zoomable to larger pics that are still web quality. These larger pics would have a link on them to allow downloading of a full size printable image. All of this would preferably be generated and uploaded automatically using the gallery generation interface we have today.

    Dave,
I imagine that one issue that would have to be dealt with would be some kind of protection scheme. I post galleries on PBase, but not my higher-resolution "originals". PBase does, however, have a two-tiered protection scheme, password-protection, and non-public protection, so that if you post high-resolution files you can do so without the fear of people downloading them without some kind of permission. A lot of copyright marks can easily be cropped and, with a high enough resolution file, can be used without the info for print or whatever.
Anyway, you might want to include some kind of protection with the ability to download high-res files.

  • Quality of photos downloaded from web gallery

If someone downloads a photo from my web gallery, what quality is the photo? When you share a photo through email it asks you if you want to send it "Actual Size", "Large (higher quality), Medium, etc. Also, is the quality of a photo downloaded in a web gallery the same as a photo downloaded from my iWeb website?

If you select the option to let others download photos from the web gallery they will be downloading the full sized, pixel-wise, image. However, there will have been some jpg compression on the file. iPhoto does that so as to speed up uploading time and not fill up the iDisk as fast. The amount of compression is 9 on a scale of 1 to 12 where 12 is the highest quality. This was determined by saving the same file with Photoshop to different quality levels and comparing.
I was hardpressed to see any degradation in image until I compared them side by side at about 200% magnification. Exposure histograms for each image were the same.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
