Web hosting for Macs

I have gone from bad to worse in having my websites hosted.
Can anybody recommend a reliable hosting service ideally specialized in Macs?
Thanks a lot in advance,
Luigi

  • Web host for mac

I want to create a website and purchase a domain name from either yahoo small business or godaddy but after reading a lot of replies here i see that it must be a big hassle and often does not work. If anyone could explain the process as far as what it would take to get a site up and running. thank you

What you have for a computer or operating system makes no difference. Web hosting is web hosting. Compare what you get for $99 a month from machost ...
    http://www.machost.com/mysql_hosting.html
... to what you get for $5 a month from bluehost ...
    https://www.bluehost.com/tellmemore.html
... and I think bluehost wins big. Even if they cost the same. Google 'web hosting' and notice that about half of the most popular hosting companies offer similar packages at similar rates. The steps to set yourself up are pretty simple.
    1. Whip out your credit card and open a web hosting account.
    2. Domain registration is part of the sign up process.
    3. Add your file called index.html to the document root of your web host.
All of these packages allow you to log in to a control panel that lets you set up email accounts, ftp accounts, additional domains, and more. From its control panel, bluehost lets you create what they call 'web disk accounts' so your web space can be a secure mounted network disk on your Mac. Updating your web site is as easy as copying files from one directory to another on your machine.
Do NOT use iWeb! It is a very simplistic program designed to get you to sign up for mac.com web hosting. I grew tired of looking for what they charge after the free trial expires. I'll bet that like machost, it's a lot of money for a little web space. Google 'free html editor mac' and anything you find will probably be suitable. I use one called NVU.
It should take less than an hour to set up a hosting account, register your domain, set up a few email accounts, create a web disk account and copy over a simple static web site. The whole deal should cost about $130. That covers hosting for two years and the first year of your domain name. You will have to renew your domain name for another $10 after a year.
Perhaps your first domain name is included in the deal now, so it might be only $118.80 for two years and one domain. I've been using bluehost for over a year with no gripes, except that because the price has dropped, I may be getting screwed on the deal for as much as $35 a year. They seem to have lifted their 300Gb disk and 3000Gb monthly transfer limits too.

  • Alternate web cam for Mac

Hi guys, this may be only for Aussies and NZ's.
I have a imac G5 and was wanting to get a web camera for it. The isight is way too expensive for what it is, and the logitech 400 camera is also in the $140 mark. As I don't really care about the rez and so forth, I don't really want to pay so much money. There used to be a macally one that typically sold for around $50, but I can not seem to get it in Australia any longer.
Anyone know about any other possible web cams for mac that would be in the no-so-expensive range, and could be in Australia?
    Thanks
    Connor

    Hi Connor --
Is this what you had in mind: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0001JSSLI/104-4462944-9175107?v=glance&n=17228 2
If you do decide to get it, or any other USB webcam, then don't forget to also get Ecamm's iChatUSBcam software.
FWIW, I love the iSight -- I realize it's expensive, but if you use it a lot you learn very quickly to appreciate the superior picture, sound and style.
    Either way, enjoy your cam...

  • VST Host for Mac?

I know this is not the best place to post this question but I was wondering if anyone knew of a VST host for Mac?

I'm looking for something more along this line.
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/9388
This app seems to work but it's not the cleanest looking thing in the world. I'd rather spend $20 or $30 to get something a little cleaner looking.

  • Web hosting for IWeb

Besides .mac site. does anyone know of any other good web hosting places? I know that powweb.com supports iweb pages but looking to see what else is out there.
    Thanks
    Carrie

Not sure what you mean by "support" for iWeb pages. We're just talking about HTML files here, so ANY web host will most likely work. Just have to find out the particulars about what exact location to upload your files. And you'll have to use your own FTP program.
Keep in mind, though, that moving away from .Mac leaves a lot of iWeb features off the table for you...like search, comments, slideshows, the Apple counter, and more! And don't forget about the "smart" uploading capabilities of iWeb. And besides, iWeb I guess .Mac offers the iDisk, webmail, iSync and lots of other things that are tightly integrated into the OS X desktop experience.

  • Terminal & Ext. Drive Problem - Will Give 6 MO. FREE Web Hosting For Result

Thank you for reading this! I am having a problem with an external drive, which has pictures and files that I use and need! I figured terminal would be the easiest way to fix this, but if someone knows another way to fix it, feel free to suggest that. I am willing to give 6 months of free web hosting from my company to the person who gives me full direction and a working answer to my question.*
HISTORY: On my iMac G5 I use an external hard drive to store files and pictures, etc. This drive has two (2) partitions. I named one partition "Backup" and the other "The Drive". For some reason, unknown to me, my computer renamed "The Drive" to "The Drive 1". I have used this drive for quite some time with no problem at all, but then...
I needed to let someone else use the computer but did not want them to have access to the "The Drive 1" partition. So, I went into "Get Info" for this partition and selected "No Access". It worked fine, not able to access.
When I went to change the permissions back, this particular partition was not available. I saw the "Backup" partition but not "The Drive 1". I tried unplugging and plugging back in the external drive, but still only see the "Backup" partition. In "Disk Utility" I see both partitions, but the button "Verify/Repair Disk Permissions" are gray-ed out (not available). I called Apple's Wonderful Tech Support who went above and beyond to help me out with this issue, but they said it was not something they cover in support.
I am looking for someone with the skill of being able to use Terminal very well. I will provide all information needed to figure out a result to this issue.
In Terminal I was stuck after I typed "cd /Volumes" and "ls -l". I saw the "Backup" partition and "The Drive 1" partition. "Backup" had this "drwxrwxr-x" and "The Drive 1" had this "d---rwxr-x". I understand that "d" is directory and what "r" "w" and "x" mean, but I do not know how to fix it from here. Apple suggested to try "chmod 775 /TheDrive1" or "sudo chmod 775 /TheDrive1" but it only resulted in: "chmod: /TheDrive1: No such file or directory". Please figure something out, I need these files. Thank you. And also, if you know another way to fix this without terminal that is fine as well, i just assumed that it would be easiest this way.
    Thanks again!
    Thank you all so much!
*I will give the 6 months free as long as the answer is fully answered, and fixes my problem. If more than one person answers correctly, only the first will receive the hosting. Do not think this is a joke, I will give the hosting, but not if I get bad or incorrect information. Also, this "free hosting" will be for hosting through my company (HyperlinkMe.com) and not money for hosting of your choice. If I figure out the problem, I will try to post it as soon as possible. The web hosting package you recieve will be 1 gigabyte of disk space and 15 gigabytes of data transfer. This is limited to six months from day of setup, but can be extended by paying regular $9.95 monthly fee. Thanks again!
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Yes it did work. It was a million times easier than I expected and I got a response a million times faster than I would have ever expected. Thank you soo soo much. This is amazing, a miracle... not to get to crazy now, but I truly thank you with so much thanks. Ok, I guess if you do not need any web hosting, I must repay you some how. So, if you need any help with a website, or any questions at all I would be more than willing to help.
Once again thank you! I called Apple twice and they went beyond support in trying to help me, but they said nope, we can't. So I came to the discussion forum this afternoon and in less than 2 hours I signed up, posted my question, got a response, and had my issue solved! Thank you so much. And please, please take me up on the offer to help, it is the least I can do.

  • Web Hosting For Beggeiners

I would like to start hosting websites, however I am very new the the server end of mac. I am wondering if there is any where I can go to learn the ins and outs of Mac Web hosting? I was also wondering if there was any form of web hosting automation for mac (e.i. Plesk/Zpanel) one that would run on the Mac OS without having to install Parallels. Any help you can give is much appreciated.

This website is a good source of information for web hosting providers: http://www.webhostingtalk.com. It is a forum for web hosting providers so you won't find step-by-step tutorials there but it is a good place to search for answers to your web hosting questions. To my knowledge there is no native cPanel/Plesk type solutions for Mac. The market for that sort of product seems to be primary for Linux-based servers.

  • Web hosting using Mac Pro

I want to run a website and wondered if any of you could recommend a web hosting services in the UK that supports Mac OS X.

However their web hosting software packages are not compatible with Mac OS X so i'm not sure what else I would need?
Eh?! I've never come across a hosting account that wasn't compatible with Mac OS X. All hosting accounts use standard protocols to access your space, ftp/http etc, which makes them universally compatible and in turn, not OS specific.
The only reason I mentioned MS accounts is the fact that their web servers sometimes require slightly different coding which can be a pain if you don't know what you're looking at.
Could I use webspace provided by my ISP?
    You could do that too.

  • Web cam for mac

My grand kids have just got an e mac and have set up msn messager to talk to their friends. I thought about buying them isight web cam for them for Xmas but the are expensive. Maybe this is not a good site to ask this question but anyone know of a good alternative which is more affordable?

The Mac version of MSN Messenger does not support video. Yahoo messenger's software supports video from Macs, and iChat supports video chatting with AIM.

  • Off Topic - Web Hosting for Resellers

I am have been a reseller for Media3.com for over 6 years
    now. They have
been pretty decent until recently. My pet peeves are huge
    amounts of SPAM
that come through to all of my accounts (Media3's SPAM
    solution is
non-existant and they want me to use Postini.com to help wipe
    out SPAM which
completely eliminates any profit I make from my accounts),
    backed up mail
servers that take a long time to deliver mail and error
    messages about mail
not being delivered due to a time-out from the server.
I am desperate to solve some of these issues. Can I get some
    recommendations
on good web host providers that have decent plans for
    resellers? Thanks
    much.
