Web Image Aspect Ratio

Is there a way for images to automatically maintain their aspect ratio when they are loaded in Project Siena?
Right now I've created a single image in the project and then load various images from the web based on user-provided data. Unfortunately, these images have different aspect ratios and sizes. Is there some way for me to have the image resize automatically
for each of these new images as they load?

Exporting for Web - maintaining aspect ratio

I've been trying to export a 6 minute video as a Quicktime movie file which will be imported into Adobe Flash for use on the web. I've tried 3 or 4 codecs and all of them end up creating a 4:3 image where my source is 16:9. What codec would be best to use and maintain the original aspect ratio and still keep the video file a reasonable size to import into Flash.

Ok, I misspoke when I used the term "codec". I did mean I had tried a variety of settings, none of which preserved my original 16:9 aspect ratio (and this, despite setting "preserve aspect ratio" in the mpeg-4 settings). So, I have experimented with a variety of settings to no avail. I'm sure there is something there - I was hoping someone had the same experience and could clue me in on what settings to use.

Is there a problem using 9x16 aspect ratio pictures

I'm trying to create the lens profiles for my GoPro Hero2 camera (I have succsesfully created the profiles for photo mode) but I cannot do the same for video mode. I have extracted the nine photos from the video streams but the Lens Profile Creator allways comes back with the following error message "Generate lens profile failed because the camera model solver failed to find a solution."?
The calibration & Grid Detection seems to recognize and is able to process the images.
Is the "model solver" looking for a 3x4 image in it's calculations?

That should work as long as the checkerboard chart that you used for the shoot has 1:1 black/white squares. The model solver does not assume input image aspect ratio or even square pixels. The error message just says that it could not find a solution. You could try to give more images. Does the images have EXIF metadata that describes the focal length of the lens used? That would be useful to help the algorithm out. You could use the exiftool to inject such metadata if they are missing from the image.

How to convert HD 1080 to SD 486 pixel aspect ratio "IN" Shake ?

I convert 1920X1080p master to 720X486P in Shake because i like the downscaling algorythm.
But when i put the exported file in Final Cut, it distorts the image to show correct aspect ratio, meaning Shake exported square pixels.
How can i convert 1920X1080p (square pixels) to 720X486p (CCIR601) DV pixel ratio directly IN Shake rather than allowing FCP to "distort" it to show correct image aspect ratio ?

I have found a simple workaround
Here's what i did in Shake:
I import the HD 1920X1080 square pixels clip.
I select HDTV1080 as exporting format in the "Global" tab.
I type 720X360 as export size in the Parameters 1 tab.
Render out...
In FCP, i import and reset the distort control to 0 in the clips motion tab.
ET VOILÀ. Everything has the correct aspect ratio without compensation distortion in FCP

Running fullscreen on monitors with different aspect ratios

I am trying to run a program in fullscreen on a projector. It works fine on my computer, but the background image appears stretched when I run it on a projector with a different aspect ratio. How can I run it as to prevent this?
This is how the code looks:

Contain will provide a kind of letter box effect like watching an old 4:3 tv show a widescreen 16:9 TV.
Cover will fill the screen with the image bug clip some of the image if the screen and image aspect ratios don't match.

Header Image File - Wrong Aspect Ratio in PDF

I imported a picture into a form and it looks great in the FormsCentral editor. But when I export the form, the aspect ratio is all wrong. The Form Setup is 700 pixels, letter, Portrait. I don't see many setting options to play with. See attached screen shots.

I had a similar problem (and solved it):
I combined (right click on selected files > "Combine supported files in Acrobat...") .jpg images to a PDF binder using Adobe Acrobat X Pro.

The result was a PDF with horizontally bloated pages that did not match the aspect ratio of the raw images.
Why is that so?
Unlike Foxit PhantomPDF, Adobe Acrobat uses EXIF metadata (ExifImageWidth, ExifImageHeight) stored in the image header instead of the real dimensions of the File (ImageWidth, ImageHeight).
Windows users can verify EXIF info by using for example the free tools XnView, Exifier or best ExifToolGUI.
In my case, the image dimensions were 1200x1710 (real actual dimensions) and around 1469x2084 (EXIF metadata).
Now how can that be - this does not make any sense ?
Well, obviously, the original file had larger dimensions and was resized without deleting the EXIF dimensions.
Because Acrobat uses the EXIF info intstead of the actual dimensions, the PDF looks distorted as a result.
Again, Foxit Phantom uses the actual image dimensions when creating PDFs.
How to solve the issue:
In case you have image files with different dimensions, the easiest way to fix this is by selectively deleting EXIF metadata using:
1) PhotoShop for single files (File > Save for Web & Devices > set “Metadata” to “None”: http://photographylife.com/how-to-delete-exif-data#ixzz2i0wFMNpE

Stretching images while retaining their aspect ratio..?

I'm looking for a method that will allow me to resize an image (div background or regular img) to fit as tall and wide as the container allows, while retaining the image's native aspect ratio.
The method I'm currently using is :

However, this method only seems to work when the body is the container, and will only keep one of the two axis within view. I can specify either height:100% or width:100%, but not both because that will skew the images natural aspect ratio.
What I'm trying to accomplish is to block off 100 pixels at the bottom for navigation, 300 pixels on the right of the viewport for a text column, and leave the rest to be filled by an image that would stretch as much as the space allows (again, while retaining its aspect ratio).
Your suggestions are welcome!

First of all, you should never use dreamweaver option to modifie an image. Always use the appropriate programe to resize your image ( Photoshop or illustrator). Even if the web standart are 72 dpi you might never know what is the format of your image, and by stretching too much or downscaling it's size too much you will .. well.. have a low result.
Next : why do you want to keep a zone for navigation ?. Background by default cover everthing, and if you put your navigation on top of it, it will cover the background and make it invisible at that spot because your navigation will be on top of it.
Anyway What you want to do is first define exactly the maximum size of your Bg minus the zone you want to keep blank. Then put the bg and use option like Margin-right, margin-top to force the image to be where you want it to be.
Margin-bottom: 100px for exemple.
You can achieve that in your CSS setting i believe.

I have to convert at 16:9 Premiere file I originally made for DVD into a web ready format. Can I do this without distorting the image? In other words, I want to reduce the file size and keep the proportion intact.
Also, for future reference, what is the optimum aspect ratio when creating video content for web with Premiere?

I wish to make a slider callery for my website. all the images need to be 750 Pixels high, the width does not matter. I have a mixture of square pandscap and protraite images can i do thing as one export or do i have to do it twice? Once for long edge and once for shot edge?

Yes, you can but there is a trick to it.
In the Export Dialog under <Image Sizing> select Widdth & Height.
Then enter 750 pixels for Height.
Put your cursor into the Width field behind all the numbers that appear there and with the backspace key delete the numbers. If you enter "0" it will not accept that. But it accepts when you just delete the field for Width with the backspace key. The Width field will now be just blank.
When you then export all image will have a height of 750 pixels and the width will fall variously according to thne height / width ratio.
Or alternatively you can enter 7.5" for height at a resolution of 100 ppi.

How can I change the aspect ratio of an image display

I am snapping a sequence of images and using imgPlot to diplay the images. However, due to my camera specifications [it's a Pulnix 9701 with Pixel Size 11.6μm (H) X 13.3μm (V)], the image I get displayed is elongated in the horizontal direction, i.e. if I snap an image of a square, I get a rectangle on my computer display.
How can I change the aspect ratio of the display on my computer? The only parameters I have seen so far just control what portion of the image is acquired or diplayed, but none actually changes the aspect ratio.

If you are using an analog camera, you can set the aspect ratio in MAX. This will correct for non-square pixels.
If you are using a digital camera, I don't think there is a way to fix it during acquisition. You could resample the image to correct the ratios, but that would be a slow, time consuming process.
One other possibility is that your computer monitor is in a mode which is not a standard 4x3 configuration. For example 640x480 and 800x600 are 4:3 ratios. 1200x1024 is not, which tends to distort your displayed images.

How do I restore all images in a collection to original imported aspect ratio?

Typically I select all images in a catalog, resize the first image to 640x480. I then right click on the first image (all images are still selected) click on Develop Settings, Sync and choose to sync only the aspect ratio. All images are then cropped to 640x480 like the first image, which I then export to a folder.
I then need to restore all images to the original aspect ratio for building a slideshow to export to my website. I've followed the same procedure i.e. selected all images, click on the first image, change aspect to original, right click on first image and sync aspect ratio for all images.
The problem is that the rest of the images do not return to their original aspect ratio but revert to 4x6 aspect ratio instead of the original size when imported. I've changed the lock to unlocked and tried both but still no result. Now I have to select each image individually, open the crop dialog and choose custom to get it back to the imported aspect ratio.
How do I batch restore all images in a collection to the aspect ratio when imported?

Rotating an image is adjusting its crop rotation and crop size. You originally said you wanted things back to import state which presumably was full resolution w/o any adjustments to ratio, size, or rotation. If you are wanting to do things in the middle of your other processing I'm less sure what to tell you.
Taking a crop that you have at 3:2 and setting it to 4:3 shrinks in the longer sides, and resetting the ratio to 3:2 shrinks down the shorter top and bottom--this is how it always works, because a crop box is not ever expanded by setting the ratio to something different, and changing the ratio back and forth like that makes the crop-box smaller and smaller.
Are you having an issue because you want to fiddle with the crop in the middle of other processing every time, or is this a special case because you've moved on in your processing after asking your question some time ago?
If you routinely need to do this, an easier way might be to export the images at the 3:2 crop, then reimport those JPGs, change the crop on those JPGs, only, then re-export them a second time, and be done with them. This sounds like you're making proofs?
If you are making proof-sized images at a different ratio? Why not just export the 3:2 images at a smallish size, perhaps with a watermark and not have to worry about making them 4:3 ratio?
Another alternative would be to print the images to JPGs instead of a printer, and set the paper size to a 4:3 ratio and turn on the Fill option--which will chop of the long sides automatically as it prints them.

What is the fix for constarined crop aspect ratio changing when the image is rotated

I've migrated through LR 3, 4 and now 5 up to 5.4. I have been able to set a crop aspect ratio and synch pictures to that ratio as well as other editing selections. When I edit a particular picture and rotate it , the aspect ratio has stayed constant - to the value originally selected.I've never had a problem and it has consistantly worked properly even through last weeks editing activities. Now, when I set aspect ratio and then rotate, the aspect ratio really changes. If I go back and reset aspect ratio and select Done, it seems to be ok. This issue seems to perform wrong with portrait orientation but not in the landscape orientation. I have uninstalled LR, gone through registry cleanup, reinstalled LR, claened up the registry but nothing gets better. I do note that the settings aren't totally removed as the reinstalled software wants to pick up where I left it prior to uninstalling. As best as I can tell, all of my settings and preferences are the same as last week. It works on last weeks folders but not on new ones.
I have now seen many forum write-ups about this problem but have never found any solution. Help - I can't go through life cropping and straightening images sideways.

Here is a thread that I think addresses this problem. There were MULTIPLE bugs in the crop tool when Lr5.0 came out, probably due to adding the Upright Tool, but they are slowly getting worked out. Maybe this one will be fixed in Lr 5.5

E-M5 Mark II: Why does LR6 not support working with the full 4:3 raw image for pictures taken using a different aspect ratio?

When importing Olympus E-M1 or E-M10 raw images which are taken in aspect ratio different to native the 4:3 MFT sensor format, LR will display the frame as crop overlay to the full image as captured by the sensor. This is very useful because at time of postprocessing one can still control the position of the frame, and modify if required.
I was very suprised to see that for E-M5 Mark 2 this is not supported in LR6. The raw file in LR6 corresponds exactly to the frame which was chosen while shooting. Full 4:3 image information is present in the ORF raw file though, which can be easily seen eg using Olympus Viewer.
Is there any specific reason why this useful feature has been neglected for E-M5 Mark II?

Still image pixel aspect ratio wrong in exported video (but correct in Premiere renders)

I've saved a targa still image from my footage and added it to the bin. It's properties show as follows:
Image Size: 1440 x 1080
Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1.3333
This correctly matches my sequence settings as I'm working with 1080p widescreen footage.
The image appears as expected in the Program window both before and after rendering previews. However, once I export my sequence as a video file, the still image is squashed (displaying incorrectly):
A work around would be to stretch out the still to a width of 1920 in Premiere so that the export displays it back at its normal aspect ratio - which works - but I don't understand why I should have to do this.
The other solution I found was to go to the bin and 'Modify > Interpret Footage' and although "Use Pixel Aspect Ratio from File" already shows the correct settings, to actively reset it (to the same pixel aspect ratio) with the 'Conform to' option:
This works too.
Surely a bug?

Thanks for the quick reply. But then why does the still's properties (in my bin) show the pixel aspect ratio as 1.3333 (not square pixels, 1.0) and should it not appear incorrectly in both the preview renders and the exported video ? This seems inconsitent to me.
