Web page browsing speed drastically slowing down

I purchased a 13 inch mac book pro in December. Since day one, I have had a problem with my web page browsing speed drastically slowing down. These crippling slow down periods are completely random. They can start any time, and last from any amount of time. from minutes to hours.
95% of the time any attempt to load a page end in a time out. The other 5% takes no less then 90 seconds to load the simplest of pages. I have this problem no matter what browser I use (Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Opera). What is driving me nuts is other applications work fine when browsing slows down. Skype, IM clients, multi-player games all work great, but web pages will not load. When I ping a website, my latency returns are perfectly normal. I can use Telnet and SSH with no problem.
This has become such a problem that I can not depend on using OS X day to day. I used boot camp to setup a windows partition and installed win 7. Using my win 7 install everything runs perfectly, I have had zero slow down!
I've done some searching and found numerous posts with similar problems. Ive read and followed the advice that I found, but I've had no success is fixing this.
I have had this problem on 6 different wireless networks. Each time this problem has come into play, my windows install performs flawlessly. This really makes me belive this is a software problem. Not hardware / ISP.
I see alot of post blaming default ISP DNS servers, just to let everyone know I use google's open DNS on my home network.
I also have changed the DNS settings in OS X
All other machines on my home network have zero problems!
Sending files between my laptop and other machines on my network works perfectly.
I have found a few posts / guides for using OnyX, none of them have worked for me
I have to be missing some simple thing here, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for the welcome and the quick response Glynn
I rebooted into OS X as soon as I read your response. Web pages would not load.
I followed your instructions.
The Airport Light was green.
I went ahead and hit assist me and ran the diag tool. According to the tool my internet connection is working correctly.
Sadly the problem persists and web pages still will not load in all four browsers.
I ran a ping to google.com and responses were well under 45 ms.

  • Imovie '8- SPEED UP/SLOW DOWN

I know that the speed up/slow down option was taken off of imovie '8. My question is, what do I do? I have heard through the grapevine that you can download imovie '6 which does have that editing option, but I can't figure out how to do that? thanks for your time.

    1) Upgrade to iLife 09
    or
    2) A free option is to use JES Deinterlacer. Karsten Schluter has a [tutorial on his excellent web site|http://sites.google.com/site/karstenschluter/slowmowithim08].
There are no legal free downloads of iMovie 06.

  • Hi. I am going to be buying a macbook air 2012 soon with 4 GB of RAM and wondering how much memory space does norton AV take up and does it drastically slow down the mac. Thanks a lot :)

    Hi
I am going to be buying a macbook air 2012 model with 4 GB ram soon. I was wondering how much space (memory) does Norton AV take up and does it drastically slow down the computer. Also, I am going off to uni so will predominantly be using the laptop for surfing and MS office.
    Thanks a lot

Sorry to disagree mende1.  In this age of email attachments and social networks, it is actually a good idea to have a good antivirus on your system. {I realize that this is a religious argument and I will say no more}.  With that said, the general concensus is that Norton AV is terrible. It is intrusive and uses up a lot of cycles.
There are a lot of better AV clients out there.  I use ClamXav which is free and uses the clamav antivirus that is open source.

safari browser seems to slow down when working with my wifi ASUS AC 68U router - any ideas on why?

Is your problem with Safari on the iPad, or some MacBook Air?
Are you sure that the ASUS firmware is tested with the device having trouble and its operating system?
Note: MacBook Airs do not run iOS.  They run Mac OS X, Windows or Linux.

  • Speed up/slow down clips

    Hi

Did apple actually decide not to add these feature on IM08. If so why?
I doubt the Apple made a conscious decision to remove any features. It is more likely the current inability to "thread" the command structure that is causing all of the problems. Basically, the old application allowed third-parties to create code routines that could be selected and called directly/immediately by the user when he or she wished to create a special effect. In essence, the source data is passed to the called routine, modified on the spot, and then inserted into the "timeline" replacing the source content. However, iMovie '08 does not perform any immediate/direct processing. Instead, it lists the source segments to be modified and states what "effect" is to be applied. No real action is taken until the file is actually to be shared or exported. Then, and only then, is a physical movie created. Therefore, the problem is to create an application (iMovie '08) with the capability of extending its own command list, as well as, define these new commands as a process or series of processes which can be called independently at a later time. If your are familiar with FORTH or a similar programming language which has a threaded command structure (i.e., one in which you can define new commands in terms of previously defined commands and formally add them to the command list/structure) then you will likely understand the problems that need to be overcome here by Apple and all third-party companies likely to be involved in creating/re-creating "plug-ins" for iMovie '08.

  • IMovie 08 - Speed up/ slow down clips

anybody know how to speed up / slow down clips in iMovie 08?
    thanks

You can do slow motion with iMovie 08, but it requires the assistance of other programs.
Give the more powerful iMovie 06 a try, you'll find these features and others built in.
Below is a short video showing how slow motion works.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ekemnSluEgs
iMovie 06 is a free download to iLife 08 owners. (THEY WANT YOU TO HAVE IT!)

Much has been written about the differences between iMovie 06 and iMovie 08. I have found the below link to be helpful.

  • Since installing Maverick, speed has slowed down considerably. Not able to export photos form email to iphoto. What is going on?

Since installing Maverick, speed has slowed down considerably. Not able to export photos form email to iphoto. What is going on?

    When did you install?
Spotlight will need to re-index the entire system so that can cause slow performance if you updated recently. It can take many hours on a large disk with a lot of data. Click the Spotlight menu, it should say if it is still indexing.
There is no point trying to fix anything whilst this is ongoing, because it may just speed up when complete.
Are you able to drag photos from email to the Desktop or to iPhoto's icon? How about the 'File menu > Save attachments' option?
Please clarify what you have tried, otherwise we may waste time on the wrong thing.
If the system is generally unstable there are other things to try too, such as safe boot.
    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455
That will isolate all third party software, if the Mac is able to do the things that didn't work it suggests that you have software that is loading at startup or login. The easiest way for us to see these is if you download EtreCheck & generate a report.
Post the report here & we can try pointing to items that you can either update or remove.

  • G5 Power Supply Popped - Still works but fan speeds up/slows down nonstop!

    Hi,
After applying a security update for Tiger 4.11 on my G5 1.6 a few hours later my machine made a bang/pop sound. It still powers up but once running it sounds like the machine is ramping up to speed and slowing down again. It does this continuously even when machine is running. Apple hardware test reports no problems but i'm concerned. Any ideas?
    Thanks.
    Dan

I had a similar problem (fans speeding up then slowing down). I have iStat installed so I was able to look at the rpm's of the fan (free widget btw). My CPU fans ranged from 2500 to 3200, oscilated all day long....up, down, up, down ...every few seconds. I noticed my CPU utilization was up, which was odd since my machine was somewhat idel. Looked at Activity monitor and saw my CPU's sometimes reached 90%. The application that was using the CPU's was the printmgr. Stopped the process and everything is ok. I know it is unrelated to the popping sound but you might ck the activity monitor to see what is going on.

  • Time mapping in Logic?  Want to speed up\slow down track.

I've used time-mapping in Final Cut. But never in Logic. I've got a LOT of slowing-down \ speeding-up to do on a score that will be mostly midi \ sample instrument based.
Could someone point me to whatever it is called in Logic?, and are there choices of how to do it? Complex vs. easy? I vaguely remember finding it tricky in Logic to create a click-track 'after-the-fact' to match a piece of audio.
    All ears,
    Ben

    Hi Erik,
I've got a Bach piece I've midi'd, written in rather than played (it would take me days to learn to perform it decently). There are no dynamics in the piece.
I want to add the dynamics. Volume\velocity is easy. But I also want to start the performance slow, speed up, then slow down.
If there is any 'real' audio I will add it after, so that's not an issue, I'll just follow the scored track.
What I need is the easiest way to control the speed of the performance ... speeding up, slowing down incrementally (rather than just abruptly changing the tempo). I remember the 'beat-mapping' now, as something you do after you've recorded a live-audio piece. I also remember it being really tricky to work with.

  • Browser tool-bars slowing down web authentication

    Hi
Browser toolbars such as: yahoo! and windows live are causing the web authentication pages
to load really slow.  It's causing a lot of headaches for me and I was wondering does anybody know
    a way around this?
I have tested a browser without toolbars and the pages pop up immediately but once any of the toolbars
are added OMG! I could have 2 coffee breaks and still have time before the page loads.  Any help here
    would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Sed,
Use this one, in the *sample editor window*, with the correct sample/audio file in it of course:
Then pick *'classic mode' OR free mode* (both do exactly what you describe) and 'complex' algorithm. You can pick any setting in the Tempo or Pitch fields - they are linked. Click '*process an paste*' and you're done.
    Regards, Erik

  • Browsing speeds extrmely slow

    Heys there,
    i´m the new guy
Since a few weeks i have a problem with safari and chrome: both browsers got extremely slow while browsing the web, sometimes they even stay blank paged. download speeds are ok though as the generel network performance is. the problem is there both in ethernet and airport mode.
but what really surprises me is that firefox is as fast as always and loads any page the other two won´t. i kinda hate that browser though on the mac platform though... ;(
so, can any of you guys help me out?
    thanks in advance!

If Safari is getting very slow:
(Presumably you regularly empty your Safari cache by deleting the following file:
    Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/cache.db
    and clear your History)
Adding Open DNS codes to your Network Preferences, should give good results in terms of speed-up as well as added security:
If you are using a single computer: Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu, and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' add the following two numbers:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
(You can also enter them if you click on Advanced and then DNS)
Sometimes reversing the order of the DNS numbers can be beneficial in cases where there is a long delay before web pages start to load, and then suddenly load at normal speed:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2296
If your computer is part of a network: please refer to this page: http://www.opendns.com/start/bestpractices/#yournetwork and follow the advice given.
If you use a Router, make sure it has the latest firmware installed.
One reason for a slowness in page loading may be the 'DNS Pre-fetching' feature of Safari 5.x as is described here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3408?viewlocale=en_US
You can cancel DNS pre-fetching by going to Terminal and typing:
defaults write com.apple.safari WebKitDNSPrefetchingEnabled -boolean false
You have to restart Safari for it to take effect.
If Safari seems to hang for ages:
If you have a lot of tabs open and/or a lot of pages running Flash, Safari can sometimes 'hang', requiring a restart of Safari. This can often be inconvenient, and as it is rarely Safari itself that is hanging but merely one of its plug-ins, usually Flash, there is a way using Terminal to restart the plug-ins (without restarting Safari and losing your tabs) by quitting the WebPluginHost process:
Open the Terminal from the Utilities folder in /Applications and type
    killall -9 WebKitPluginHost
Note that this command kills all Safari plug-ins, not just Flash. All plug-ins should start back up when you reload the page.
Then go back to Safari and refresh any pages that were using the Flash plug-in. This also fixes the Beachball of Death. Try this whenever Safari gets slow or freezes. The latest versions of Flash 10.1 appear to have improved the situation somewhat, but haven't completed eliminated it.
For this and other reasons Apple switched their websites to HTML in January 2011:

  • Internet Speed drastically slower...Why???

Hello all. I have an iBook G4 with OS X 10.4.11 and over the last couple months, while using the internet on Safari, I am noticing distinct slow down in internet performance. Whether surfing the net, checking email, watching a video, etc. the speed of the computer or internet seem to be much slower than it used to be. In fact, a lot of the time, I'll click on the link for a page, and Safari just freezes and nothing loads. About 30-60 secs later it will come up empty with a failed to open page that says, Safari can't find the server!? This happens about half the time I try to open a page. This has virtually never happened in the entire 4 years prior until recently, and overall speed while on the internet seems to be about 20-40% slower than it has been the entire time I've owned my laptop!
There is nothing wrong otherwise, I have not switched internet providers, haven't had anything wrong with the cpu otherwise, haven't installed any new software or hardware, etc., and all the other cpu's in my place work just fine. I have ATT 6mbps internet which is supposed to be their faster service and it works just fine on my two other pc desktops, but for some reason, my G4 laptop has just been acting weird over the last 6months to a year. I have NO idea how or why this could be happening and was wondering if anyone had some ideas or suggestions for me on how to solve this or get my speed back up to par. I feel like I'm using dial-up half the time when I'm paying for fast DSL. And the fact that none of the other cpu's are acting this way or going slower makes me wonder if something is wrong with my trusty G4. Thanks in advance.

Have you tried resetting Safari? Go to Safari menu items from the drop down and click 'Reset Safari'. Alternately you could go to Safari preferences and empty the cache and delete all cookies. Those temporary internet files build up and can really slow down your browsing.
I would also make sure that you have the latest updates for your OS. Open system preferences and click on 'Software Update' and install the updates.
You should also repair Disk Permissions once a week. Open Disk Utility in the utilities folder located in Applications on your hard drive. Select your hard drive from the list of volumes on the left, then click 'repair permissions'.
Those are are good first steps and easy items to check.
    Good Luck!
    Randy

  • Internet speeds keep slowing down to a crawl

I'm having a problem that has only developed in the past week which was during a time when I haven't changed any configurations in that period of time since my son was born a week ago yesterday and I obviously had more important things to do than mess with my network configurations. However, about 2 weeks prior to his birth, in the process of configuring a baby monitoring system with icam source, 3 weeks or so ago, I read that I might be able to improve my internet performance, I ran googles namebench a couple of times and added and re-ordered the DNS servers that had been listed prior to any problems developing based on its' reports. My internet speeds improved as a result of changing those DNS settings and stayed good until the past week. But of course, we now need to use the computer as part of our baby monitoring system and it's not working worth a **** and I'm getting frustrated since I can't put my finger on the problem and I don't really have time to spin around in circles right now. I'm sure it's probably something simple and I can't put my finger on it though. Sleep deprivation is new to me.......
I've kept running log of notes so this is a little deshoveled but I figured the more information I provide the better the chance someone might help me get this solved quickly.
In the last week, since my sons birth, my internet speeds would be okay after restarts and resetting everything, 2.5 Mbps or so but after a 10-15 minutes it starts to slow down to .2-.3 Mbps. I went thru all my network settings, restarted everything, repaired permissions, I've changed ethernet cables reset PRAM, firewall is running, stealth mode enabled, allow signed software incoming connections and my various other programs such as netsessionmac4f3c6b, skype, java, itunes, etc.
All sharing services off and pretty basic login items at startup including growl.
I had AT&T come out and check my DSL line and everything checked out on their end up to and out of the DSL modem based in their equipment tests.
The problem seems to start when I connect my imac (a fairly loaded 27" imac I got in Dec.) First off, as soon as the imac is connected to the modem via ethernet, the old ethernet modem flashes and continues to flash, even right after startup. So the tech thought something was running in the background and I can't figure out what. I looked through login items but don't see anything that would be a problem and am afraid to eliminate everything.
So I created a guest account to eliminate any login items (I think) and in I got 5.69 Mbps right off the bat. But after a minute or two, without changing anything my download speed slows down and I get for example .77 Mbps. The same thing happens with my administrator account on the imac. Fast speeds at startup and more importantly if I change the configuration by switching between ethernet and airport, I get fast speeds right after changing the configuration but after a minute or two I am well below 1.0 Mbps. I've got several network configurations with automatic, airport and ethernet set up in different ways including a clean ethernet connection with the original DNS settings.
I haven't set up an airport only account but that really isn't the way I want to hook up the computer that sits right next to the modem and runs my network. Restarting the old modem and direct connecting the computer to the modem results in the same thing happening.
I connected my ethernet from the (old?) modem directly to my ancient powerbook G4 and I got +5.6 Mbps download but it also slowed down to 300 kbps after 5 minutes or so the first time (old modem?)
Now to explain why I have "old?" listed above. I was then able to get a new DSL modem from AT&T, hook it up just fine, get enormously faster internet service in the 5,000 kbps only to have it slow back down to around 300 kpbs after connected for several minutes.
    directly connected to imac-bypassing router
    3,500 kbps
    after 15 minutes-250 kbps
connected to imac thru router/time capsule with airport extreme
    2500 kbps
    after 15 minutes=166 kbps
directly connected to an older powerbook G4 with new modem
    IP address of 192.168.1.64
    5.65 Mbps on speedtest
    after 15 minutes=5.67 Mbps
    after 30 minutes= 5.59 Mbps
    1 hour-5.66 Mbps
Very solid, stable readings for what I am used to. This would seem to isolate the problem to the imac.
directly connected to imac with new modem
    IP address of 192.168.1.64
    5.8 Mbps on speedtest
    after 30 minutes= .60 Mbps-ping takes 250 ms
    1 hour= .46 Mbps-ping takes 250 ms
Now a problem that only started last night after I hooked up the new modem and started up my old Time capsule/airport configuration, I got a message that said something to effect of "another device on this network is using computer IP address 192.168.1.64. So I tried manually changing last digit of the IP address on the computer to one number higher and it kept saying the start and end range were incorrect so I shut the airport station down since when it was connected, it would not allow the computer to connect thru the router via ethernet. I did a hard reset on the airport and I got it back up and running just fine but the internet speeds on the imacs' ethernet connections are so slow it's practically worthless. I also checked to see what was connected to my airport on any given occasion, 2 iphones, 2 pads, another imac running upstairs and a newer powerbook running icam source that is supposed to be the baby monitor. Except for the laptop everything can use "802.11n" but the powerbook only connects via 802.11g so I have set the airport to that limiting setting.
Any suggestions? Is there a way for me to log what is happening so I can report in more detail?

First thing is to check if the wireless is on a sensible channel: HomeHub doesn't always make sensible choices.  Install inSSIDer on your laptop and see what other devices there are around and if there is any clash.  Also, try moving the HomeHub around a little, even quite small differences can make a big difference to wireless signals.
You could run an ethernet cable from downstairs to upstairs.  Easy to do, but can be a bit unsightly.  If most of your devices are upstairs, you could use this cable to connect the modem to the HomeHub.  If you have devices both up and down, you may want to keep the HomeHub downstairs and add a switch upstairs.
HomePlug may be suitable for you.  If you search Amazon for HomePlug you will see a couple of kits for just over £30.  Don't go for an 85Mbps one.  A 200Mbps such as the TP-link or D-Link should be much better than wireless, but not as good as a cable.
Depending excatly how many devices you want to connect and where, you can pay more and have a builtin wireless at one end: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Devolo-1408-Wireless-N-HomePlug-Adapter/dp/B00472MMCQ/ref=sr_1_15?ie=UTF8&qi...  Or it may be best for you to use the basic devices and add an old wireless router in switch mode.

  • Completed all Troubleshooting steps but continue to get slow downs from unresponsive scripts on Firefox. Is there a way to use my browser w/out slow downs?

    Mac OSX.
I've gone through the list of troubleshooting tips for slow downs and for unresponsive scripts. I continue to get slow downs to my computer and browser when I use my Firefox. It is becoming so bad that sometimes I cannot get work done.

And now, I think I've identified part of the issue. When you pin tabs as an app tab, this slows down Firefox in all the ways I mentioned. Please, please Firefox, if you are going to offer such a useful and simple thing, make sure that it works...
Having closed these App Tabs, I had a temporary break from the slow downs... Then after another few minutes, the slow downs in Firefox continued... At my wits end.

  • Speeding up / Slowing down beginning movements of still images

I want to "exponentialize" moves when I use still images. I want to create non-linear speed up and slow downs at the beginning or end of my movement. Does FCE do this? Where? I know Adobe Premiere used to do it?
    Any Suggestions?
    ~Mark

In FCP you can ease scale, rotation and most other keyframable values.
You used the term expontential in your first question. This specifically refers to scaling animation that makes the speed of the motion appear to be continuous. This is a feature in After Effects, but is not available in any Final Cut Studio product.
    All the best,
    Tom
