Web page width

When laying out a web page, how do you determine how wide you
want the lay-out to be? I have seen the main content lay-outs range
from, let's say, 764px to 1024px.
Is it better to use a percentage, like 100%?
I'm trying to grasp the basics...sorry if this is a space
cadet question....

It's answered at least 2 times a week on the Dreamweaver
general forum.

You either make a bald-faced, or an informed guess as to what
the browsing
habits are of your site's intended audience. If it's upscale
artsy types,
you might want to go wider. If it's mom and pop, you might
want to go
narrower.
The two general widths to choose from are ~760px and ~980px.
The former
will give you a page that does not drop horizontal scrollbars
on a maximized
browser viewport on an 800px width screen. The latter will do
the same on a
maximized browser viewport on a 1024px width screen.

  • Web page width most used by active web designers

    The question "How wide should you design your web page?" is asked from time to time. Many web designers are understandable still designing for a 800 pixel screen. I know the standard answer is to design for your viewers. If there is a substantial percentage of viewers using older browsers and lower resolutions, than make your web pages around 780 pixels or less. But that width is starting to look very narrow on the wide screens that have been around for a while.
    So, we all know that we need to design for web site visitor. I would like to know how many currently active web designers are still designing the majority of their web sites for 800 pixel screens. Or are you mostly creating wider pages for higher resolutions and wider screens? I am not ready to completely abandon 800 pixels screens yet, but I am starting to design wider pages for higher resolutions.

    Depends on the job, for instance the amount of info that you need to find a place for on a page.
    It also depends on the audience, if you were to make a site for a tech-savvy audience you might expect them to use bigger screens.
    but this offcourse you already knew
    The sites I did most recently were 800, 850, 1000, 896, 780  and 1000 pixels wide, all fixed, all centered.
    If you look in the stats (Google Analytics) for the latest site I did (1000px wide) you'll see that 800x600 visitors come in the 12th place (0,82 % of all visits)
    At 20 we see 320x396 px (0,41%), at 26th place 800x480 px (0,2%) and at 43th place 640x512 pixels (0,10%)
    So: 98,47 % of all visitors have a screen that is wider than 800 pixels.
    Also interesting to see is that, on average, a user spends 1:49 minute on the site and looks at 5,73 pages during a visit.
    The  800x600 user however spends 45 seconds on average on the site (-58,4%) , and views 2,25 pages.(-60,7%)

  • What is stander width in html web page?

    Is there stander width for web pages?
    Sometimes I found who said it is should be 730px as max, is this right?
    If not then, how I should be chose a width of my page to clear and nice in difference browsers with difference resolution of monitor
    I wish if I can know that by using px not percentage.
    Thanks for any help...

    then i would choose 800px, as there are still people runnung on old moniters.
    If you're going for a 800px wide window browser, then it would need to be 760-780px wide, not 800px - need to take into account the scrollbar / chrome area of the browser :-)
    If you are looking at a 1024px wide window, then 980px wide is recommended.
    As to the original question - the link Kath provided is a good one.
    What you need to consider is the demographics of your viewing/browsing audience.   For example if the site is aimed at the more technically minded, then they are more likely to be using the latest computer equipment which means larger monitors, so your design can be created using a wider width.
    If the client base is more mom and pop type customers - who may not update their computer hardware very often, then you may need to consider the narrower window size.  If you are targetting people who are located in areas where the internet connection is slower, then that has to bve taken into consideration as well.   Best place to check is your site statistics to access this type of data, which may help yo determine what may be the optimum size for your website.

  • Width of web page!

    Is there a way to make the web page expand horizontally to fit the width of the window of your browser?

    I know this is a dumb question, but want to clarify anyway If I am going to put advertising on the right and left margins of my site then that needs to be included withing the 980, doesn't it? In other words I should make my main site (for example) 780 and the ads 100 on either side (very simplistic example - I'd add in padding, etc.).
    Thanks,

  • How to make web pages fit the screen width?

    Some web pages don't fit the screen width and Firefox user (me) has to scroll horizontally, which is very annoying:
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/kjyubp6f3z104ku/ScreenShot021.jpg
    Opera user, on the other hand, just clicks on the "Fit to width" button and everything looks great again:

    Is there a way to force web page text to wrap?

    I get EXACTALY what "SantosHaHa" posted above. (Ffox 20 Win 7 64).
    Zoom doesn't help. Make things bigger or smaller, BUT THE PAGE WIDTH IS STILL CROPED!
    Have had this problem for 2 years and several versions.
    NOTHING seems to work.
    I wander why Ffox keeps changing versions so often, with so many new problems apearing, if Netscape worked fine 15 years ago!!!!

  • Have each web page display at full page width automatically

    How can I set Firefox to automatically display each web page that I open at full page width. Microsoft IE9 does this for me and it is very helpful.
    I have to adjust each web page to full width every time, since Firefox does NOT remember the full page display even if I come back to a previous web page which I already adjusted before.

    Great news, thanks!
    Don't know what a mac newbie like me would do without this forum. Thanks a million.
    Great to hear, there are plenty of great helpers here, so feel fee to post a new topic whenever you wish.
    By the way, is this technique covered anywhere in Mac help?
    Yep, click on the Finder in the Dock, click Help up in the Menubar>Mac help, type windows into the search at top right, hit ENTER, should get a list, 4th down here.
    Seems Windows7 is a big improvement over Vista, but still not as good as XP, certainly more of a pain than XP.

  • Web pages won't adjust automatically to the width of my browser.

    MS IE will automatically adjust the web page to the size of the browser. But Firefox doesn't do this, so I have to scroll left and right. Can this be fixed?
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened

    As mentioned above, make sure that your "Browser Fill" is what you are applying the gradient to:
    Also, if you do not want your "body" to be white, you can set the fill on that to be transparent:
    Hope this helps!

  • Playing swf file by onclick in html web page

    First time poster so please forgive any protocol lapses.  I'm trying to play an  AS3 swf embedded in my web page by an onclick javascript function in my page.  Have tried many different ways, including the ExternalInterface class but no luck. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.  I have a feeling that I'm overlooking something very basic.

    No need to be sorry...  one other thing... the url to the swf uses the "public_html" directory as a lead-in.
    <param name="movie" value="public_html/our nations.swf" />
    The public_html directory of a web site is typically where a web site's content is placed as the base for a web site on a host server.  Unless you have a directory named public_html within what is probably already the public_html folder, then you do not want to specify that.  It is more probably supposed to be...
    <param name="movie" value="our nations.swf" />
    If you look at the various images that are specified in the html code, they do not specify that directory.  So if the swf is in the same folder as them, you do not want to be specifying the public_html part of that address.

  • Can't get a web page to validate with meta tags with w3c??

    I have created a website for my school projects, and every week I have to add something to it for the course, and every monday I have to submit my code in a zipped folder to the professor, after running it through the w3c validation page, and passing, This current week, I was instructed to swork on SEO for my site, and add meta tags to the site to fish for traffic, and then I have to validate it through w3c and submit. Well, I did not complete this because w3c would not validate my page until I removed every single meta tag from the code, and I cannot for the life of me understand the error that is holding me back. So, in an effort to see if I could get some help here, I have included my code, and will try to explain what is happening and the code as well as the error from the validator service. Please have a look, help me, because I am totally lost here....
    Thanks in advance!!
    zlloyd1
    This is my code:
    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
    <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
    <head>
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />
    <title>zlloyd on the web</title><meta name="" content="Zachariah Lloyd, basketball, computers" /><meta fttp-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8" />
    <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="stylez.css" />
    </head>
    <body><div id="container"><h1>ZLLOYD ON THE WEB</h1> <div id="navbar"><a href="about.html">About me</a> <a href="OceanView.html">Ocean View</a> <a href="swimming.html">Swimming</a> <a href="gaming.html">Gaming</a> <a href="BBall.html">Basketball</a></div><div><a href="gaming.html"><img src="images/Gaming-Desktop-Configuration.jpg" width="107" height="239" alt="console" /></a><a href="BBall.html"><img src="images/300px-Basketball_pictogram.svg.png" width="82" height="76" alt="BallinGuy" /></a><a href="swimming.html"><img src="images/swimming.jpg" width="100" height="237" alt="Strokin" /></a></div></div>
    <a href="contactsupport.html">Support </a>
    </body>
    </html>
    and this is what w3c says when I try to validate the page:
    Line 5, Column 131: there is no attribute "fttp-equiv"
    …mputers, swimming" /><meta fttp-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; chars…

    You have used the attribute named above in your document, but the document type you are using does not support that attribute for this element. This error is often caused by incorrect use of the "Strict" document type with a document that uses frames (e.g. you must use the "Transitional" document type to get the "target" attribute), or by using vendor proprietary extensions such as "marginheight" (this is usually fixed by using CSS to achieve the desired effect instead).
    This error may also result if the element itself is not supported in the document type you are using, as an undefined element will have no supported attributes; in this case, see the element-undefined error message for further information.
    How to fix: check the spelling and case of the element and attribute, (Remember XHTML is all lower-case) and/or check that they are both allowed in the chosen document type, and/or use CSS instead of this attribute. If you received this error when using the <embed> element to incorporate flash media in a Web page, see the FAQ item on valid flash.
    What in the world does this mean, because I am seriously lost on this, and the only way I could get around this was to completely remove the entire line, "<meta name="" content="Zachariah Lloyd, basketball, computers" /><meta fttp-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8" />", which removed all of my meta tags completely, in order to validate it?? I cannot see what is setting this thing off like that, I have never gottena validation error before, and I now know that they are written as meaningless gibberish that does not even remotely explain what is wrong, at least not to me....
    Please help!!!!

    Line 4 and line 5 are trying to do the same thing. Take out the
    <meta fttp-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8" />
    line entirely and you will be good.

  • Open web page from URL iview in maximized window

    Hi,
    I would like to open a web page in a <b>maximized</b> browser window, using an URL iView.
    I know how to open a window in a separate window, I just can't get it maximized.
    N.B. I do <b>NOT</b> want to open in <b>fullscreen</b> mode, i.e. I want a title bar and menus.
    Does anyone know how to do it?
    I tried to play around with the "window function" property of the iView, but no luck so far. I can't specify a fixed width and height of the target window at design time, as these values may vary at runtime.
    regards
    Lothar

    Hi Lothar,
    Yes, That will require Java Coding, Its true. Basically what the problem here is that to maximize we are trying to fetch the Screen resolution dynamically through Portal that Portal is not allowing us. Thats why I feel that we should go for Java Programing, Create a Par, Deploy it in the server and then create iView for that.
    For Creating the Abstract Portal Component for Opening a Maximized Window You should do following steps.
    1. Open Your NWDS
    2. Create a project ie Portal Application
    3. Create Portal Object ie Abstract Portal Component.
    Now here is the piece of code that may help you
              response.write("<SCRIPT language=javascript>");
              response.write("function onOpenWindow()");
              response.write("{");
              response.write("window.open('http://abc.com','windowName','width=screen.availWidth,height=screen.availHeight,resizable=yes')");
              response.write("}");
              response.write("</SCRIPT>");
              response.write("<a href = \"javascript:onOpenWindow()\">abc.com</a>");
    Paste this code in doContent...
    I think it may help you
    Thanx & Regards

  • Can't update mysql records from a web page

    Hi everybody,
    I am beginning with Dreamweaver CS5.
    I followed a video tutorial on how to visually design a data entry/update web page for a mysql database using server behaviors.
    My problem is that I was able to insert records and see inserted records but when I try to update a record it doesn't work.
    I don't get any error message, it just redirects me to the listing page as it's supposed to but doesn't take into account the changes I made.

  • How can I display the date a word document was last modified on my web page?

    I have lists of links to word documents on my web pages. I
    want to be able to show the date the word document was last
    modified next to each link. My pages are straight html.
    Thanks.

    >but I would have to go to each individual file (I have

    No, you can use the FileSystemObject to get a list of the
    files in the directory. See if you can adapt this for your site:
    <link href="/CSS/dirlist.css" rel="stylesheet"
    type="text/css">

    Function FormatSize(SizeInBytes)
    if SizeInBytes > 1024^2 then
    FormatSize = formatnumber(SizeInBytes / 1024^2,2) & "
    MB"
    elseif SizeInBytes > 1024 then
    FormatSize = formatnumber(SizeInBytes / 1024,2) & " KB"
    else
    FormatSize = SizeInBytes & " Bytes"
    end if
    end function
    %>
    <%
    dim parts
    dim part
    dim BrowseLine
    dim RelLink
    dim i
    url = Request.ServerVariables("URL")
    Parts = split(URL,"/")
    for part = 1 to ubound(Parts)-1
    ' calc link
    RelLink = ""
    for i = 1 to ubound(Parts) - part - 1

  • I did a COPY of some text from a web page, and then did a PASTE into notepad.exe (Windows). The text from each line was duplicated -- on the line! Instead of "Fred", it became "Fred Fred".

    I just recently installed Firefox for the first time. It seems nice and quick. The version is reported as: "10.0.1".
    I wanted to save some text from a web page, so navigated to that page, selected the text, and pressed the Control-C combination to COPY the selected text to the buffer. For example, the text I selected looked something like this:
    Harry
    Ron
    Hermione
    Hagrid
    Albus
    NOTE: Each line of text has a small icon to the left of the text.
    It is not reasonable to COPY and PASTE each line individually, as there can be hundreds of lines of data. I recall, however, that
    doing a COPY and PASTE on this data into Microsoft's Excel will produce cells which have the icons included in the cell, but unfortunately one cannot can't get rid of them! At least I've never found a way to remove them, but that's another issue. :)
    Once I'd done the COPY operation I switched to a Notepad window and did a PASTE operation. To my surprise, the text from each line was duplicated. It looked like this:
    Harry Harry
    Ron Ron
    Hermione Hermione
    Hagrid Hagrid
    Albus Albus
    Thinking that there might be something unusual about the web page I looked at the source, but it appeared "normal" -- that is, as expected.
    Note: I have done this operation several times before, and have never seen this occur before.
    Note: In the actual data some of the lines have quoted text in them. Curiously there is weird behavior on these lines. In some cases the entire line is shown only once. (These occur at the top of the line, and the quoted text is at the beginning of the name.)
    When quoted text appears "later" in the name, in some cases the quoted text is duplicated, and in other cases the quoted text is missing altogether! I have also noticed an error with the quoted text, and so will be reporting that to the web site which generates the HTML.
    Note that each line of "text" is "anchor text", so if I click on a name the browser navigates to a page for that name.
    I believe that the problem is that the COPY operating in Firefox is not simply copying the visible text, but also the ALT=
    Below is a sample of what the source HTML looks like:
    &lt;a class="lnk" target="_blank" href="http://details.aspx?id=Harry">
    &lt;img width="16" height="16" alt="Harry" class="tb_icon" src="http://.../Harry.gif"/>
    &lt;span>Harry&lt;/span>&lt;/a>
    <br/>
    (Because of the true length of the lines in the source HTML, I have stripped out the actual URL of the site.)
    To make sure I wasn't imaging this difference I repeated the process within Internet Explorer. In that browser I did not get duplicated data.

    Try:

  • Printing problem with my web pages

    Hi all-
    I noticed a funny problem with one of my web pages. When I go to print, it only prints one page length of a webpage that should be two pages long (assuming you choose the shrink width to fit one page wide option in your print command).
    I post messages with training schedules and people sometimes want to print the page, I'm not looking for pdf or anything, just a simple print the whole web page. When I print, the second half of the webpage comes out blank. I tried saving at a pdf from the print window, and the same thing happens.
    The page I'm trying to print out is at:
    http://web.mac.com/gdefrancis/FSNordic/FSTeam_News/Entries/2008/12/22_JNT_Holiday_Training_and_PracticeSchedule.html
    Note that is stops printing (or leaves a pdf converted from the webpage blank) after the 12.21 entry.
    any suggestions?
    thanks!
    Greg

  • CSS Flexbox - a new layout method for web pages

    Hi,
    As you may all know, css flexbox is a new layout method for laying out your web page, and with Firefox releasing version 22 within the next few days, (should have been yesterday) it is now no longer hidden behind browser settings. Add to this the fact that all desktop browser except IE10 and Safari 5 & 6, no longer require the use of a vendor prefix, and that http://html5please.com/ simply say ’USE’, flexbox is now finally a viable layout alternative, especially for responsive layouts.
    Flexbox has been available on all Android and iOS devices, (and any device using the webkit engine, e.g. new blackberry’s and Kindle Fire devices) since they were first release.
    To help find problems, and provide help in using flexbox, we would be grateful if you would experiment and provide feedback in the use of flexbox for layouts.
    To help you get started a video tutorial, (with files to download) and examples of layouts, (more to be added next week) and tips & tricks to help with some of the more common problems have been provided at http://flexboxlayouts.com/. This site will also be updated to provide you with a list of problems and hopefully the solutions to those problems, so that you will have a ’one stop’ reference site for using flexbox.
    If you have any tips in using flexbox, or a flexbox layout that you would like added to the site, then you can use the ’Submit’ email address on the http://flexboxlayouts.com/ site.
    For more info on the css flexbox specifications see -

    or if you just want to know what property is supported by which browser/device -

    Note to regular contributors & moderators:
    As I only have time to visit and help in the forum for a few hours per week, should you find any flexbox problems unanswered then please let me know via email.

    Hi Al
    Yes I know, and this is why I am asking people to experiment with flexbox.
    The fix for IE10 is to give the right hand sidebar, (or the content) a larger flex-grow property, the bug is caused by the flex shorthand property not recognizing % values, and using the flex-basis as a set width instead of a preferred size.
    I have logged the bug, (and many others) with the various browser bug bases.
    This and other bugs, do have 'fixes', so I hope users will experiment with flexbox and provide feedback.
    Flexbox is no different than any other css feature, "we can only find the problems in actual use".
    Strangely enough, I have found the most consistent to use is the old 2009 implementation on mobile devices, (no doubt iOS7 will change all that ).
