Web pages without file extensions

Hi All
I have Mac OS X Server 10.5 running on a mac mini, i have set up my own single web page through server admin and i am able to access it perfectly by typing in safari http://intranet.
but the question i have is whenever i click on any link's on my page it will bring that page up but in the address bar have for eg http://intranet/blog/index.html
is there anyway to have it so it just says http://intranet/blog/
I am pretty new to this and am totally confused, i am not sure if i need to alter the code of the web pages. i have looked in the code and it is all href to a page but without the extension on it.

It's not entirely clear what it is you're asking.
Are you saying you never want to see the filename in the address bar and that you want the address bar to always show http://intranet/blog/ ?
If so the simple answer is no - at least not with standard web programming. The only way you could is by using advanced techniques using DHTML/AJAX or something similar where you load content in the background and change the display rather than loading a whole new page. This is truly an advanced technique.
If my understanding of what you're trying to do is wrong, please post more details of what it is you're trying to do.

this should not be happening, maybe one of your addons is interfering?! - can you try running firefox in safemode or with all extensions disabled for a while and see if this behaviour is still there...

Including an email address on a web page without it being harvested for spam

As per the title really - anyone know of a method of including an email address on a web page without it being picked up by spam bots?
Usually if i want to avoid that, I just do a little form with a honey trap, but I'm working on a page that needs contact details for around 100 places, so doing 100 odd forms for a single page might be a little impractical.... Thanks.

Run it inside a script that parses an XML file based on the link's ID - one script, many links, no directly visible mail addresses (though, of course bots can still parse the XML file itself, if not in a hidden directory or something liek that).

You cannot. You could do so in an applet though, but then you're not doing it "on the webpage".

From the menu bar, select

If the Network preference pane is locked, click the lock icon in the lower left corner and enter your password to unlock it. Then click the Advancedbutton and select the Hardware tab. Select

          MTU: Custom
Enter an MTU value of 1280.
Click OK and then Apply. Test.
You must apply the change before it takes effect.
If the issue is resolved, experiment with higher MTU values until you find the highest one that works. The higher the MTU, the better the network interface will perform.
If changing the MTU has no effect, restore the Configure setting to Automatically.

How can I save a web page without creating a dozen or more tiny files, which is worse than Internet Explorer?

When I try to save a Firefox web page, I get about a dozen tiny files with funny names cluttering up my documents folder, and making it hard to find anything. This reminds me of problems I used to have with Internet Explorer more than ten years ago. But at least, IE was kind enough to gather all of these files in a single folder, named "files". Firefox dumps them all into my documents folder. Messy.
Years ago, I discovered Opera, which offered a file format that combined the original html code with the other files into one file: an internet archive, with the extension mht instead of htm. I used Opera for years, but recently became aware of the advantages of Firefox.
A few days ago, I downloaded the latest version of Firefox, and installed it. I have been evaluating it ever since. It looks good; I have figured out (more or less) how bookmarks work, and I'm getting used to the taskbars.
But when I try to save a page, I still get a deluge of tiny files cluttering up the target folder. Firefox doesn't save pages in archive form, but only in the old scattered form. Of course, I could simply save only the html. Maybe that's the best thing, but it loses a lot.
The chaos of junky files cluttering up my target folder is enough to send me back to Opera, despite its limitations.

How to display names without file extension in Content Query Web Part in SharePoint 2010

I try to display names in Content Query Web Part but it shows file extension. I cannot find a way in CQWP editor that can exclude file extension. Is there a way to display names excluding file extensions thru settings in the CQWP editor?
I have to edit the code in SharePoint Designer, right?

In the file ContentQueryMain you have already a function to get the file without extension.
So we just can use this:

I need to play a FLV file on a web page, but I don't want it playing in a visible player. That is I don't want there to be the usual Play button and no frame. I want it to work and look much like this link:

It is similar to those infamous "Mac vs PC" videos which occasionally play on the home page of NYtimes.com.
My flash ability in this area is limited. (I'm a Joomla pro but not a flash pro.)
Looking at the source code, I see various swf controller file links, and some javascript, I think. I have no idea what is in the swf files that may or may not be making it all work.
First of all I don't even know if it is possible for a FLV file to play above html and then disappear revealing the html when it is finished playing. I assume with the swf and javascript and divs this is possible, but am not sure.
Ideally I would love the complete code if possible. Or links to where I can find out how to do it.
Need clarification? Just let me know!

it's possible. but you have quite a lot to learn or you should hire someone. it's unlikely you'll find someone to do all that gratis.
if you want to learn, check the video class. it will let you play the flv file without a skin.
you can also use the flvplayback component with no skin. that will add to your swf's file size with no benefit except it's easier to use than the video class.
the floating and disappearing can all be done with divs.

We have a problem our users are having. Clients are having problems using Cisco 5.06 VPN along with Internet Explorer. Quite often web pages hang or load incorrectly or unformatted. Also links to documents or downloads are downloaded unusable (i.e. a PDF file that is corrupt). If you refresh the page or retry the download it will work eventually. None of these problems exist while they are directly on the corporate network. (Win7 32-bit OS)
Our standard corporate VPN installation package uses Cisco VPN 5.0.06.0160 which installs version 3.22.4.17992 of DNE (Deterministic Network Enhancer), It also installs the DNE Update version 4.9.1.1837. This combination works correctly in our standard corporate build. The problem exists in two of non-standard builds on a couple different hardware models.
If I uninstall the DNE update and the VPN client and just install the VPN client by itself without the DNE Update (which leaves the client at 3.22.4.17992 for DNE) the problem goes away and the web pages load correctly and the files download properly.
I have tried the latest DNE, and updates to the NIC driver without success. Any suggestions or logic to why the newer versions of DNE will not work. I would leave it alone for the next few days and do not keep restarting the Homehub. This will cause DLM (Dynamic Line Management) to kick in and lower your speeds because it will interpret the restarts as a fault. It is normal for the speeds to fluctuate during the training period. If things do not improve after the ten day training period post back for more advice.

Any solution for incomplete Web pages without installing SP8?

In some web pages, pdf files are downloaded in very small kb and not opening despite I have Adobe reader, Pro and plug in

I have Firefox 3.6.6, downgraded from higher versions since I have this problem below.
At some web pages (mostly professional academic sites like Oxford Journals), when I am clicking to get pdf of an article, Firefox start downloading ridiculously small size and cannot open it as it gives the message "Acrobat could not open 'filename.pdf' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged ..."
I know the file is not damaged, because I can open them in explorer. And some websites are also working properly in Firefox. I do not care if it opens in firefox or pops up separately.
I have reloaded Acrobat and Firefox but problem continues.

hello vijayabhaskarv, that sounds as if you're using the pdf viewer built into firefox per default, which might not work in all situations. please see the following article in order to select a different plugin to render pdf files: [[How to disable the built-in PDF viewer and use another viewer]]

How do I get to my web page without a place to put the address? Having to google it every time, with a new page is extremely annoying.

There is NO refresh button, NO go back button, NO forward button, NO place to type the address of the web page. Those are the only buttons I remember from the previous bar.

It sounds to me like the installation went pear-shaped somewhere along the line.
What I suggest you do is to do a new installation as follows:
Go to [http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/fx/?ref=logo Download Firefox 4.0] and download a fresh installation file to the desktop.
Then go to Add/Remove Programs, scroll down to Mozilla Firefox and remove it, choosing to keep your bookmarks, customizations etc., (''don't checkmark the box'').
Then reboot and delete the folder called Mozilla Firefox at this location: C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
Finally run the installation file you downloaded.
After you complete the installation, go to the [http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/plugincheck/ Plugins Check] page and update those. In that respect, I notice that several of them are out of date which potentially exposes your system to attack.

Automated process to pull data from a web page without using VS and PS.

I'm looking at finding a solution to pull data from an external web page and creating a list. I'm looking for a NON-POWERSHELL AND NON-VISUAL STUDIO solution. I am open to using InfoPath Designer.
There exists a custom, non-SharePoint page built for us which has raw data. We've already created a custom list to match the data and now need to come up with a solution to automatically update the data. In this particular scenario, power shell and visual
studio cannot be used.

Why would you cripple yourself and restrict PowerShell at the very least which has perfect functionality for doing exactly that.
I doubt you could use the InfoPath data sources to pull the raw data in, re-map it and save to SharePoint without resorting to some sort of coding within InfoPath.

When Generating Flash web pages; images files incorrectly reported as missing.

Using LR 2.2 or 2.3, <Web, Export, (to local directory > As Program executes, in the upper left corner of screen, LR displays tiny version of image being processed, and path of web image; THEN, upon completion, displays the following error message ---- Export did not complete successfully. ( Window with list of following:) Original image file is missing: ( complete file path and name for raw image) etc. ----- (even though the files exist at the specified location!) Options selected in generating web page: - Flash gallery - Layout: paginated - large images size: large - thumbnail images size: large Machine data: Lightroom version: 2.3 [539407] Version: 10.5 [6] Application architecture: x86 Physical processor count: 8 Processor speed: 2.8 GHz Built-in memory: 6144.0 MB Real memory available to Lightroom: 4096.0 MB Real memory used by Lightroom: 616.5 MB (15.0%) Virtual memory used by Lightroom: 1197.2 MB Memory cache size: 801.8 MB Source files (on external firewire drives): |-- subdirectory 'Show name' - selected images - Dress rehearsal - performance 3 - performance 4 - performance 5 My History with bug: Using LR 2.2, web pages created successfully from 'Performance 5' and 'selected images', but not from others and got error messages as above. I am not expert in these, but please check out the following things and see whether it would solve your issue. (All these changes can be easily rolled back in case I'm wrong :). So make note of what you do)
As per your httpd.conf, you have chosen an automatic configuration of Apache by OWCI installer itself. What it does is create an imageserver.conf file in a separate directory and these settings will be included in your httpd.conf as you can see in the first line: Include "C:/bea/alui/plumtreeconf/".
If you check the imageserver.conf in that location, you would find a line like: Alias /imageserver/ "C:/bea/alui/ptimages/imageserver/". This aliases the original path "C:/bea/alui/ptimages/imageserver/" to /imageserver"
To confirm whether this is done right, check the following:
1. Acces 'http://<server ip / server name / localhost >/' from your browser
This should display the Apache home page (as per your httpd.conf, it uses the default port 80; so no port number required)
2. Access 'http://<server ip>/imageserver/' from your browser
This should display the directory structure (if its not disabled) inside your 'C:/bea/alui/ptimages/imageserver/' folder. Also confirm that all the subfolders are accessible.
3. If all the above is right, it means that your imageserver settings are right. Please check your portalconfig.xml for the correct settings: For example, <setting name="HTTPPort"> should be 7001 in your case. If its something else, change it and restart Weblogic for the settings to take effect.
