  • Need advice on web search engine

I may need to install a search engine for a asp.x web site I am working on. I know nothing about ASP.NET and the these are secure web pages. Also, this is for just a portion of the web site.I have no experience with search engines.
First question: Can search engines limit their search to just a section of a web site?
Second question: What would recommend for my circumstances?
    Thanks!

Answer to your first question: No, I don't want to provide a search engine to the entire site. There is a section you go in with several divisions. One division is the directory of services. The way that it's set up now is they have about 9 PDF files that are link to 9 headings. You click on a heading and it opens the PDF for that topic. The problem is that it takes a long time for the PDF to open and then the person may have to search it for the information they are looking for.
I think you may have answered my question already. If robot files are required to limit a search, then a search engine may not be the practical choice in my case.
By the way, to answer your last question, I am not coding in ASP.NET. I have made it clear to these people that I don't know a line of it. But I also think the solution to the problem is to convert the Directory to web pages, set up links of topics and maybe a JavaScript jump menu for linking to other bookmarked information. That way the searched is limited to only certain topics we decide beforehand but also limited to the directory.
What do you think of this solution? Do you foresee any problems?

  • Optimising video for web search engine results

I have little experience of producing video, so by default I have little experience or knowledge of premier... so I am here to ask a question on the back of a conversation I have just had with a client who is fairly video savvy, but not entirely premier pro savvy.
He is under the impression that premier pro has a facility to be able to analyse the content of a video and then automatically create a metadata file which can then be utilised for search engine ranking. Is this so? Has premier pro got this capability?
    Thanks in advance.
    Mat

    > Is that what's being asked for, though?  I understood the OP wants
Google to scan the video itself for metedata and use that for rankings.
Yep. The tutorials that I linked to show how to embed the speech-to-text metadata in the video and then extract it for search within Flash Player.
    > Actually whether or not any Adobe app is capable of such, I think the
bigger question is can a search engine actually scan video files, or do
    they just scan web pages?
The search engine companies are all moving toward using metadata within video files, but at different speeds and with different degrees of transparency. For now, I don't think that it's much used. But the time is coming (and is already here in a minimal, primitive form.)
The reason that I then suggested using the metadata as something to put as text on an HTML page was that I thought that this might be more valuable for the current state of search engine technology.

  • Can't dump Google/Chrome or Google and keep Yahoo as my default web search engine on Firefox. Can you help? Jim

I can not keep Yahoo.com as my search engine with FireFox as my browse. How do I keep Yahoo.com as my default search engine when go on line with FireFox? Jim

I think you need to modify the code in keyword.URL in the about:config window.

  • APEX and web search engines

I was just wondering if a site built exclusively in Application Express has any disadvantages with regards to search engines. Since an APEX page is somewhat dynamic would a search engine (e.g. Google) still be able to "find it"? Or is it a better idea to build the front page of a site as a static page since people accessing this site from a search engine is very important to the site?

See if the discussion at Re: is htmldb.oracle.com indexed by google answers your question.

  • Optimise galleries for web search engines

This is a re-post - apologies but I had little response earlier and the subject is important to me (and many others too I would have thought.
I have IT skills but am no web designer. I had someone create a simple photography web site using Flash, with the page design looking similar to a Lightroom Flash web gallery template. (See www.duncangrove.com) I am now able to easily update my galleries using no specialist skills, which is great. My concern though is that the galleries do not seem to be "search friendly". The site itself always shows up in Google but the images do not when searching for a specific phrase which is relevant to the title/keywords. I suspect I could do something to each of the gallery's Index.html page to add meta tags but since a new index.html page is created every time I add a new image, this would be very time consuming.
The issue really came to light when a client approached me to purchase an image for a large sum of money. He had found the image on my old Picasa site that I have not bothered with for years (and am ashamed of since it looks amateurish.) A Google search for the subject matter lists it fairly high up the fist search page. My "proper site" does not even show up in the same Google search, even though the image titles contain the key words that were searched for. Does Google focus on key words embedded in the images or on the image titles? Would an html version alongside the flash version help with search results?
    I would appreciate any comments/suggestions.
    Regards
    Duncan Grove ARPS

    Google focus on image titles.
I could find any flash pages on www.duncangrove.com to look at.

  • Registering .mac website with search engines

Hello! Does publishing a site to .mac using iweb automatically register your site with all the search engines out there? I would like to publish a website to .mac but I'd like anybody to be able to stumble across it on a search engine such as google or whatever. Does iweb or .mac take care of this or do I need to look after this myself? Simply by publishing with iweb to .mac, could my site be found if someone were to type key words or topic specific words into google?
    Thank you!

This is a reply from .Mac Support
—"Why can't I google my website?"
Most Web search engines use programs called "spiders" to scan the Web for new pages to add to their search results. To protect Apple's customers, and in accordance with Apple's privacy policy, we do not allow spiders to access .Mac and gather data from .Mac HomePages. As a result, .Mac HomePages by default do not appear as search results in Google, Yahoo, AltaVista, and other search engines.
If you are interested in having your HomePage appear in a search engine's search results, you can visit that search engine's website to learn how to add your page's URL to their index.—
I have tried registering my .Mac site with Google and it has never come up.

  • Disallowing search engines to cache the pages

    Hi
I want my web site pages which should not cached by any search engine or any other site. I am currently using meta tag to solve this issue. Ofcourse this is not reliable method. Can any of you suggest me the better solution.
    Thanks & Regards,
    Prasanth.C

I think you may be confusing web search engines (web-crawlers) with web caches.
To restrain the latter you need to put out a barrage of headers, since different caches tend to be sensitive to different headers.

  • Apple search engine

many times i wanted to use apple web search engine but now just thinking when will it be considered an option even? why nobody posted related question? will it make some difference?

  • Since the latest update for firefox, if I choose a link from a google search, it gets redirected to a totally different search engine

If I type in a search into Google and select ANY of the links highlighted in blue, I get redirected to a totally different web search engine. This has never happened prior to the latest update of Firefox.

Which search engine is it redirecting to?

  • How to expose Web App data to search engines

Hi Guys - Need direction please
My website contains a business directory (web app)
The web app items are in a secure zone (the client only want registered/paid members to create their business profiles) = customer submitted web app
It is also required that the directory is indexed by "elgooG".
When searching for a type of business on "elgooG", they want the listed business information found, with a link to the actual detail
    e.g.: website.com\directory\Joe-blogs-plumbing
First problem, the web app item sits behind a login (secured)
How would you configure this so that we have the Web App item secured (paid), but also visible to search engines and general public?
    Much appreciated

There is no reason for the whole web app to be under a securezone.
Once you assign the owner of the item they can only edit it when they login.
All you need to do is have a listing directory on your site that shows these. IF you do not want that and it only under a securezone of course it will never get indexed by google.
If you want the public listing of these you just need a page and put in the web app module that outputs the list. Things like the edit link wont show unless your logged in.

  • HT202225 I keep getting pop ups on my iMac for the first time in 6 years after one of my kids tried to watch football through crichd tv. safari now opens with smart search engine rather than google every time i try to open a new web page.

Ever since one of my kids tried to watch football on a website called crichd tv I keep getting pop us come up like Mackeeper and every time i try to open a web page it comes up with Smartsearch rather than google which is my preferred search engine in preferences. I have blocked extensions and changed homepage to google but this Smartsearch keeps overriding. Also a thing called MacKeeper keeps popping up I have followed the instructions to uninstall but the file it says to move to trash from the Applications folder but it simply isn't there or anywhere else. The file to uninstall Smartsearch is also not where they say it is in Library>frameworks>
Very frustrating from going from a perfectly working system to a now very frustrating and annoying pop ups coming uo after every time i open a new web page.
Any help or assistance in this matter would be very much appreciated.
    Russ

You (or your kids) inadvertently installed adware. You do not need to download or install anything to fix it.
Any tips on how to stop it from happening?
Yes. To learn how to avoid it in the future read How to install adware.
If you require them, Apple's removal instructions are linked in the Recovery Procedure near the end of that document. Read and follow them carefully. Pay particular attention to the easily overlooked passages directing you to restart your Mac when required.

  • Web Site Search Engine

    Hi,
I was wondering if someone could help me locate a code for a search engine of my web site. My dilemma is, most of the search engines I've located search the web. This's not what I want. I'm looking for a search engine where you can select from a menu display and then hit search and it will return results in a text format from my web site only.
If you're not sure what I'm looking for, an example can be found at www.westernvirtualairlines.com
They use the Quick Flight Search which is exactly what I would like to use.
If you enter Salt Lake City in the "from" box, and Los Angeles in the "to" box it will return the results in the same format I wish to use.
Any help would be awsome and greatly appreciated.
Thanks for any help and assistance.

Well, you can use Google to search your own web pages, but I don't think that's quite what you're asking.
That site you pointed to undoubtedly has its own database set up, so when you click search, it searches through their database and returns any relevant data to your search. If this is what you're attempting to accomplish, there's not going to be any script you can just cut and paste and have everything magically work for you.
While you may not see it, those aren't simply HTML pages you're looking at. That site uses Active Server Pages, orASP, Microsoft's parallel to JSP (Java Server Pages). This pages query the database, organize the result and display it on the page. If you want something this complex, you'll either need to invest some serious time into learning a technology that can handle it, or hire a developer to do it for you.

  • Sun ONE Web Server 6.1 Search Engine

Running Sun Web Server v6.1 on Windows 2K with
ColdFusion MX 6.1. When I try to access the the search page by entering:
    http://<server-instance>:port number/search
I get a ColdFusion MX error message that says:
    java.lang.NullPointerException
I've searched the forum and read the online documents. Only thing I can find is a Note about:
" The Java web container must be enabled for search to be enabled."
But it doesn't describe how to do this anywhere or what exactly this means. Does anyone know what/how this is suppose to work?
    Thanks,
    JD Trinaca

This really sounds more like a conflict between the CF MX and the search app.
Have you tried running search with ColdFusion removed?
The search engine is enabled by default, just without any collections setup.
Try removing Coldfusion and see what you get first before going down any other paths.
