Web Search not working in Yosemite Spotlight

Hello,
One of the major features of Yosemite was that Spotlight could directly return web search results. But unfortubnaltly that isn't working for me.
Anyone else facing this issue or has already figured out a work around for this?
Regards,
Kartik Gaje

Go to terminal and enter:
rm -f ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Spotlight.plist
This will delete the preferences file. Restart your computer and it should work.

Bing Web Search in Spotlight does not produce web results, Spotlight still only searches for local content. Spotlight Suggestions works fine though.

  • Mail search not working in Yosemite

Hello, I am not able to search for anything in any of my Mail accounts.  Every search returns 0 results, even if I am looking at the email I am doing the search for.  I can use Spotlight as a work around, but it is very annoying.
Has anyone had a similar problem?  Is so, please help...
Thank you all for your attention to this problem

Quit Mail. Force quit if necessary.
Back up all data before proceeding.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V, then press return.
A folder window will open. Inside it there should be files with names as follows:
              Envelope Index
              ExternalUpdates.storedata
Move those files to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Other files in the folder may have longer names that begin as above. Move those files, if any, to the Trash.
Relaunch Mail. It should prompt you to re-import your messages. You may get a warning that the index is damaged and that Mail has to quit. Click OK. Typically, the process takes a few minutes, but it may take hours if you have gigantic mailboxes. In that case, you may be able to speed things up by temporarily adding your home folder to the Privacy list in the Spotlight preference pane. Remove it when Mail has finished importing.
Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the files you moved to the Desktop. Otherwise, post your results.

  • LDAP web search not working on AD LDS instance

    Hello all !
Let me explain the goal before the problem :
We need to setup a directory service in our DMZ so our web portal can provide an address book without having to connect to the AD. We setup (this is all in the lab environment for now) an AD LDS instance in the DMZ with ADAMSYNC gathering the AD info, plus
LDIFDE commands to insert non-AD users into the same instance. The web portal will do LDAP queries to the LDS instance to provide all the users information (AD and non-AD users).
Now the ADAMSYNC works great. The LDIFDE commands work perfectly as well, and through ADSIEDIT or LDP.exe I can see the users with all their attributes.
    Now for the problem :
Trying to query the directory using a browser with the
    LDAP://LDS_server gives the following message
An error occurred while performing the search.
Your computer, your Internet service provider, or the specified directory service may be disconnected. Check your connections and try again.
    Operations Error
This is on the same computer that successfully accessed the LDS directory with ADSIEDIT.msc and LDP.exe
I also tried opening the address book from Outlook, and I got a very similar message.
Am I missing something ? I noticed that on the LDS server, the service Active Directory Web Services is up and running...

Re-opening the thread since I'm back on this LDAP solution.
So... LDS instance created and I imported a bunch of users in CN=USERS,DC=TEST,DC=COM
Under ADSIEdit.msc I can see all users with no problem. Under LDF.exe I can connect and bind to the instance and do a "tree" view of the USERS container.
I changed the dsHeuristics attribute with a value of "0000002" and also set the server's
ANONYMOUS LOGON in the "Readers" role.
At this point, Outlook can successfully list the users when I set an LDAP address book with the searchbase CN=USERS,DC=TEST,DC=COM.
Now the problem that comes back and haunts me :
I removed the attribute in dsHeuristics and removed ANONYMOUS LOGON from the "Readers" role. I want to have a username/password setup so that users would need to know the credentials to view the address book.
When I added the user to the "Readers" role, I changed the settings in Outlook accordingly (added the user, check the "SPA" box) and
    never changed the SearchBase string.
Now the answer I'm getting is "No such object. Possibly your specified Search Base is invalid."
I did not change the SearchBase setting !!!
I've tried setting up a local user, a domain user, even a user created in the LDS instance as members of the "Readers" role and nothing changed.
Please note that I've always restarted the instance's service between each modification.
So basically my need is to provide a LDAP address book in Outlook with authentication (not through AD since the address book will be published in our DMZ).

  • Search not working in finder/spotlight

When I type a query into the search or spotlight function, nothing happens.
After referring to Mac Express, I discovered that the problem is unique to my main profile (which I copied from my G5 to this MBP, which I purchased used.
Additionally, after reviewing other posts in this forum, I tried to add my HD to the spotlight  privacy setting in preferences, but got an unspecified error.
Just now I loaded a music cd, and search was able to locate files on that drive, but I could not get it to search the hard drive.
I have never done a reinstall, so am a little anxious about that, and am wondering if there's some really simple explanation for this?

    Open Terminal and type
    sudo /usr/bin/mdutil -Ea -i off
type your user password when required
    Now type
    sudo /usr/bin/mdutil -Ea -i on
After a few seconds you should see the Spotlight lens animation with a dot flashing, that means Spotlight is in the process of reindexing your disk. That could take many minutes depending on the data you have. Wait patiently until is finished.

  • Mail search not working + Spotlight keeps indexing

I have an old problem that has resurfaced after creating a new user on my Mac. Mail search brings no results and Spotlight is constantly indexing - day in, day out. It never seems to get there. I tried turning my hard drive to private in Spotlight settings and then taking it out. Previously Spotlight seemed to get bogged down with external drives now it's stuck indexing my Mac.
Any advice? Is there a way I get unstick this?

I can't believe that Apple have STILL not sorted this out. I haven't created a new user (so it's nothing to do with that), but Mail.app won't find anything when searching "Entire Message" in the current Mailbox or in "All Mailboxes". This has been ongoing since Leopard was first released, and we are now up to 10.5.8 without this being fixed.

Spotlight search not working on iPhone 5 updated to ios7. I can access the search bar, but nothing happens when I enter a search term.

I'm having the same issue with an iPad 2 and iPhone 5. As mentioned by Nick if you reboot it seems to resolve the issue. Note that after a reboot it can take several seconds for spotlight search to return the first results. After this first slow response it seems to be quicker.
If it helps I have a few hundred apps and about 24K songs so the search has a lot to go through!

Has anyone had a problem with their "spotlight search" not working? If I restart the phone it will work for a few days then not work again.

It's more likely the OP's router.  I have a wifi only iPad 2, yet location services work just fine on my iPad.  If I open maps, my location is found quite nicely.  I have seen that some routers do not provide location services and I suspect the OP has such a router.

  • Search not working on Task Description

    Hi,
I am facing a strange scenario with search not working on Task Description for a particular task item. This task item has around 18 versions of itself within it.
I tried replicating the same scenario in our Test environment with following changes in the task item description:
    1. Copied the task list over to Test environment.
    2. Deleted all the versions of this task and put a single line description as.
    3. Initiated full crawl and search results with task description were
    coming up fine.
    4. Made few more versions : 5 Versions and again initiated full craw. Search results are fine.
    5. Made few more versions this time and again a FULL crawl, but now NO results with this task description.
So, my question here is that is there any limit by MS for multiline text limit or version limit which prevents the task description from coming up in search results.
This task description as multiple line text with links to other lists/libraries and user names who created the versions in this task item. We are not using FAST search.

I found the answer elsewhere on the forum:
Somehow the main drive was added to the privacy list in Spotlight. Search is working fine now that I've removed it.

  • Scan to network folder will not work for Yosemite

Scan to network folder, which is supposed to allow the unit to scan and save to a shared directory on a remote computer, does not work in Yosemite,  though it will work on Macs sporting earlier OS on same network.
HP personnel have indicated that HP does not support Apple Mavericks. One can only assume then that it will not work on Yosemite either
Yet these units are still being sold to be used with Apple OSX.
Please resolve HP's position.  If these units will not function properly under Mavericks and Yosemite, please explicitly say so.  The scan to network feature should not have anything to do with any OS issue, and it is much more likely that the issue is faulty HP firmware.
If these units are supposed to fully function under Mavericks and Yosemite,  please provide substantive resolution of the many many problems users have experienced.
The Scan to Network feature is what makes using these units viable as scanners. The fact that this works poorly at best, and not at all on any recent Apple OS, is simple acceptable

    IT IS OFFICIAL
HP Case Manager has indicated that HP is abandoning Scan to Network Folder starting with Yosemite as OS security constraints present issues with using its current transport.
Of course this took an hour of double talk and fiddling about before the admission was forthcoming...
Shall we count the days until that information actually shows up in the forums?

  • Archive folder missing from Mail & search not working

I've been having trouble getting the Archive mailbox to appear in Mail. What's worse, often the search function is broken, and Mail doesn't turn up any search results. I've found some ways to get the Archive folder to reappear, but these only seem to help temporarily. For instance, clicking on the gear at the bottom left and selecting "Get Account Info" then selecting the Archive folder causes it to reappear, but this is only temporary and it disappears after another restart or sometimes after an hour or two. The search not working is the worst, as it sometimes is working and sometimes isn't. I don't have any idea what's causing this, but I am at my wit's end because I NEED Mail to be firing on all cylinders.

Hello, and welcome to the Discussions.
What are your selections in Mail Preferences/Accounts/Advanced for this Gmail account, if using IMAP, regarding keeping message for Offline use? The Mail search can only access the list of messages to search Subject, From, etc, but not the entire message unless copies of all messages are being kept on the computer. This would be true for any IMAP account, btw.
    More info, please.
