Web server Migration

Hi all,
I have a web server with SOWS 6.1 SP7 and I want replicate then upgrade all the instances to the Sun Java System Web Server 7 Up1. Is there a way to do so?
What are the steps I should follow to intesad of copying every single configurations,file,script?
Any clue?
TIA

HI,
thanks for the link...that was helpful!
Now I did the migration but for the search collections it keeps saying

Do you know what does it mean?

  • Sun Web Server 6 to 7 Command Line Migration - Syntax Question

    I have used the GUI-based migration tool in a development environment and it works flawlessly. However, in prod environments I cannot use the GUI as a matter of policy. In reading the 6x to 7x migration guide, the following example is included for command-line based migrations:
    wadm> migrate-server [--user=admin-user] [--passwordfile=*admin-pswd-file*][--host=admin-host][--port=admin-port][--no-ssl][--rcfile=*rcfile*][--echo][--no-prompt][--verbose][--search-collection-copy-path=directory][--log-dir=directory]([--all|[--config=newconfigname[--instance=instancename]) --server-root=path
    In looking at my 6 and 7 web server instances, I cannot locate a password file or the rcfile. Is the password file optional? Do you have to create one or does the server generate this for you? Also, what is the rcfile and where would I find it?
    Thanks!

    As a rule, any option mentioned b/w [ and ] is optional.
    Both password-file and rcfile are provided to avoid any prompts by the CLI.
    For example if the password-file is provided (with the passwords) then the CLI will not prompt for the passwords. If not, the CLI will prompt for passwords.
    In the rcfile you may set variables for path to the password file, user name, standard option values like config name, vs name, etc.

  • Migrating From Window Server 2003 to Window Server 2012 for Web server deployment and Developmemt Machine is on Window Server 2008

    Hi Microsoft Team,
    We need your urgent advice and that is also on priority:
    Issue Description: We need to migrate from
    WINDOW SERVER 2003 to WINDOW SERVER 2012 while the development activity will be carried
    under WINDOW SERVER 2008 as DEVELOPMENT BOX.
    .NET Framework Version: 3.5 ( For both DEVLOPMENT(WINDOW SERVER 2008) and WEBSERVER(to WINDOW SERVER 2012))
     IIS Version: 7.5 (For both DEVLOPMENT(WINDOW SERVER 2008) and WEBSERVER(to WINDOW SERVER 2012))
    Need your quick advice Is that configuration feasible for Development and
    Deployment (Web Server).
    Highly appreciate your response as this will depend which product we need to buy also if you feel any showstopper or concern. Please let us know.

    Hi,
    As suggested by Tim, in order to get better assistance, we can ask for help in the following IIS forum.

  • Migrating to Web Server 7.0 from Apache HTTPd document

    We've [made available|http://wikis.sun.com/display/WebServer/Migration+from+Apache+HTTP+Server] a work-in-progress document on our Wiki page discussing some of the common problems people have when they migrate from Apache HTTPd server to Sun Java System Web Server 7.0.
    We'd love to get your feedback. What are we missing? Have some information you'd like to add? The comments section is open to all feedback.
    Thanks!

    can this be made as a topic rather than a post in the forum ?

  • IPlanet migration failure for Sun One Web server 6.1SP6

    Recently we downloaded the Sun One Web server 6.1SP6 and we are having problem trying to upgrade our current version. We have been able to install the package and get the admin console running but we can not migrate the current instances across to the new version. We can successfully choose an instance to migrate however once we click the migrate button, absolutely nothing happens in the browser and nothing can be seen in any error logs and truss indicates a read of a pipe going nowhere, after which the cgi stub terminates.
    We are migrating from
    iPlanet-WebServer-Enterprise/6.0SP5 B10/31/2002 16:22
    to
    CORE1116: Sun ONE Web Server 6.1SP6 B05/07/2006 12:33

    well, it is good that you have considered to upgrade considering 6.0 Sp5 has been EOL'ed for some time now.
    here is the url that describes migrating to 6.1 from 6.0
    http://docs.sfbay/app/docs/doc/819-6514/6n8h9dr61?a=view
    now, if you are still having issues with migration using GUI, you can provide us the admin server error logs or call Sun tech support (if you have support contract) to help you with this.

  • Embedded font errors after migrating pdfs to new web server

    Hi All,
    After hundreds of working pdfs were moved to new web server, they produce variations of the "cannot extract the embedded font" (name of font) "some characters may not display or print correctly" error. The first page loads perfectly and the rest never load. All these files open fine when I open local copies in Reader (9.1.3) and Professional (7.1.0).They also open fine when moved to another server. When I delete copies on the server and re-upload using the working copies, the errors persist. Doesn't make sense. I also occasionally get the error "there were problems reading this document (14)".
    I was told by the IT department that a possible cause was that the new server environment used fonts installed on the server rather than the local machine to display pdfs.  This doesn't make sense to me.  I've researched these errors and haven't found anything applicable or that has worked. Any suggestions? Has anyone else expeienced this?
    The server is IIS and is running ASP.net. The IT dudes are saying they need to install all the refferenced fonts on the web server but due to the expense of this, they can't.This will nessecitate a really bizzarre and Rube Goldbergesque workaround (that I'm not even going to try to explain here) that I'd really like to avoid.  Any suggestions? Are there any Acrobat settings that need to be twekaed?

    Hi,
    I read the following on another discussion in this forum:
    it appears that with the shortkey ctrl+shift+Y you can force the pc to work around the system fonts
    Maybe that helps.

  • How do I use Sun Web Server 7.0u1 reverse proxy to change public URLs?

    Some of our installations use the Sun Web Server 7.0 (update 1, usually)
    for hosting some of the public resource and reverse-proxying other parts
    of the URI namespace from other backend servers (content, application
    and other types of servers).
    So far every type of backend server served a unique part of the namespace
    and there was no collision of names, and the backend resources were
    published in a one-to-one manner. That is, a backend resource like, say,
    http://appserver:8080/content/page.html would be published in the internet
    as http://www.publicsite.com/content/page.html
    I was recently asked to research whether we can rename some parts of
    the public URI namespace, to publish some or all resources as, say,
    http://www.publicsite.com/data/page.html while using the same backend
    resources.
    Another quest, possibly related in solution, was to make a tidy url for the
    first page the user opens of the site. That is, in the current solution when
    a visitor types the url "www.publicsite.com" in his or her browser, our web
    server returns an HTTP-302 redirect to the actual first page URL, so the
    browser sends a second request (and changes the URL in its location bar).
    One customer said that it is not "tidy". They don't want the URL to change
    right upon first rendering the page. They want the root page to be rendered
    instantly i the first HTTP request.
    So far I found that I can't solve these problems. I believe these problems
    share a solution because it relies on ability to control the actual URI strings
    requested by Sun Web Server from backend servers.
    Some details follow, now:
    It seems that the reverse proxy (Service fn="service-passthrough") takes
    only the $uri value which was originally requested by the browser. I didn't
    yet manage to override this value while processing a request, not even if
    I "restart" a request. Turning the error log up to "finest" I see that even
    when making the "service-passthrough" operation, the Sun Web Server
    still remembers that the request was for "/test" (in my test case below);
    it does indeed ask the backend server for an URI "/test" and that fails.
    [04/Mar/2009:21:45:34] finest (25095) www.publicsite.com: for host xx.xx.xx.83
    trying to GET /content/MainPage.html while trying to GET /test, func_exec reports:
    fn="service-passthrough" rewrite-host="true" rewrite-location="true"
    servers="http://10.16.2.127:8080" Directive="Service" DaemonPool="2b1348"
    returned 0 (REQ_PROCEED)My obj.conf file currently has simple clauses like this:
    # this causes /content/* to be taken from another (backend) server
    NameTrans fn="assign-name" from="/content" name="content-test" nostat="/content"
    # this causes requests to site root to be HTTP-redirected to a certain page URI
    <If $uri =~ '^/$'>
        NameTrans fn="redirect"
            url="http://www.publicsite.com/content/MainPage.html"
    </If>
    <Object name="content-test">
    ### This maps http://public/content/* to http://10.16.2.127:8080/content/*
    ### Somehow the desired solution should instead map http://public/data/* to http://10.16.2.127:8080/content/*
        Service fn="service-passthrough" rewrite-host="true" rewrite-location="true" servers="http://10.16.2.127:8080"
        Service fn="set-variable" set-srvhdrs="host=www.publicsite.com:80"
    </Object>
    I have also tried "restart"ing the request like this:
        NameTrans fn="restart" uri="/data"or desperately trying to set the new request uri like this:
        Service fn="set-variable"  uri="/magnoliaPublic/Main.html"Thanks for any ideas (including a statement whether this can be done at all
    in some version of Sun Web Server 7.0 or its opensourced siblings) ;)
    //Jim

    Some of our installations use the Sun Web Server 7.0 (update 1, usually)please plan on installing the latest service pack - 7.0 Update 4. these updates addresses potentially critical bug fixes.
    I was recently asked to research whether we can rename some parts of
    the public URI namespace, to publish some or all resources as, say,
    http://www.publicsite.com/data/page.html while using the same backend
    resources.> now, if all the resources are under say /data, then how will you know which pages need to be sent to which back end resources. i guess, you probably meant to check for /data/page.html should go to <back-end>/content/page.html
    yes, you could do something like
    - edit your corresponding obj.conf (<hostname>-obj.conf or obj.conf depending on your configuration)
    <Object name=¨default¨>
    <If $uri = ¨/page/¨>
    #move this nametrans SAF (for map directive - which is for reverse proxy within <if> clause)
    NameTrans.. fn=map
    </If
    </Object>
    and you could do https-<hostname>/bin/reconfig (dynamic reconfiguration) to check out if this is what you wanted. also, you might want to move config/server.xml <log-level> to finest and do your configuration . this way, you would get enough information on what is going on within your server logs.
    finally,when you are satisfied, you might have to run the following command to make your manual change into admin config repository.
    <install-root>/bin/wadm pull-config user=admin config=<hostname> <hostname>
    <install-root>/bin/wadm deploy-config --user=admin <hostname>
    you might want to check out this for more info on how you could use <if> else condition to handle your requirement.
    http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/820-6599/gdaer?a=view
    finally, you might want to refer to this doc - which explains on ws7 request processing overview. this should provide you with some pointers as to what these different directives mean
    http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/820-6599/gbysz?a=view
    >
    One customer said that it is not "tidy". They don't want the URL to change
    right upon first rendering the page. They want the root page to be rendered
    instantly i the first HTTP request.
    please check out the rewrite / restart SAF. this should help you.
    http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/820-6599/gdada?a=view
    pl. understand that - like with more web servers - ordering of directives is very important within obj.conf. so, you might want to make sure that you verify the obj.conf directive ordering is what you want it to do..
    It seems that the reverse proxy (Service fn="service-passthrough") takes
    only the $uri value which was originally requested by the browser. I didn't
    yet manage to override this value while processing a request, not even if
    I "restart" a request. Turning the error log up to "finest" I see that even
    when making the "service-passthrough" operation, the Sun Web Server
    still remembers that the request was for "/test" (in my test case below);
    it does indeed ask the backend server for an URI "/test" and that fails.
    now, you are in the totally wrong direction. web server 7 includes a highly integrated reverse proxy solution compared to 6.1. unlike 6.1, you don´t have to download a separate plugin . however, you will need to manually migrate your 6.1 based reverse proxy settings into 7.0. please check out this blog link on how to set up a reverse proxy
    http://blogs.sun.com/amit/entry/setting_up_a_reverse_proxy
    feel free to post to us if you need any futher help
    you are probably better off - starting fresh
    - install ws7u4
    - use gui or CLI to create a reverse proxy and map one on one - say content
    http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/820-6601/create-reverse-proxy-1?a=view
    if you don´t plan on using ws7 integrated web container (ability to process jsp/servlet), then you could disable java support as well. this should reduce your server memory footprint
    <install-root>/bin/wadm disable-java user=admin config=<hostname>
    <install-root>/bin/wadm create-reverse-proxy user=admin uri-prefix=/content server=<http://your back end server/ config=<hostname> --vs=<hostname>
    <install-root>/bin/wadm deploy-config --user=admin <hostname>
    now, you can check out the regular express processing and <if> syntax from our docs and try it out within <https-<hostname>/config/<hostname>-obj.conf> file and restart the server. pl. note that once you disable java, ws7 admin server creates <vs>-obj.conf and you need to edit this file and not default obj.conf for your changes to be read by server.
    >
    I have also tried "restart"ing the request like this:
    NameTrans fn="restart" uri="/data"
    ordering is very important here... you need to do this some thing like
    <Object name=default>
    <If not $restarted>
    NameTrans fn=restart uri from=/¨ uri=/foo.
    </If>

  • Reverse Proxy with Sun Web Server 7 update 4

    Hi All,
    I've just migrating to Sun Java System Web Server 7.0U4 B12/02/2008 from Sun Java System Web Server 7.0-Technology-Preview-3 B09/13/2006. I've have the two web servers running side by side on separate machines. Both have a VS configured as a reverse proxy pointing to the same apache tomcat web server.
    The Tech Preview 3 server works fine and has been doing since it was installed. However the Update 4 server doesn't. I can access the tomcat app via the U4 server in a browser, but not with the app on my mobile (sync ML). Snooping the traffic show me that the U4 server is sending a different response that the Tech Preview server. I'm thinking it may have to do with Transfer Encoding: chunked. I've looked around the web to see if I can turn this off in the U4 server, as I seem to recall having to do so at some point in my life, though I can't remember when and with what.
    Does anybody have any clues they can throw at me?? Or anybody know what has change in the reverse proxy part of the web server from Tech Preview 3 to U4??
    Both VS reverse proxies are congfigured exactly the same.
    Thanks,
    Stuart.

    well, technology preview is what the name says .. i am surprised that u decided to stick with a technology preview release all these days.. in any case, there should not have any feature change between technology preview build and U4. but , there has been lot of bug fixes - so, unless we know the exact problem - we can't easily narrow down the change between tp3 build with U4 and find out how it is affecting u.
    here is a related article on how to use chunked encoding within web server 7
    http://developers.sun.com/webtier/reference/techart/chunked_req.html
    now, to help you more appropriately, you need to provide us with errors (probably with log level set to finest within server.xml) and let us know with the error reported by web server when it is unable to send those requests to back end tomcat
    you can set log level to finest by running the following command
    /sun/webserver7/bin/wadm set-config-prop -user=admin --config=<hostname> log-level=finest
    /sun/webserver7/bin/wadm deploy-config --user=admin <hostname>
    http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/820-4842/set-config-prop-1?a=view
    (once you have identified the problem, you might want to set log level to info as setting to finest will cause your logs to grow humongous and also hurt performance
    thanks

  • Report generated in Forms 6i shows no data on Web server

    Hi guys,
    I am having an application running web server Unix platform. We have recently migrated from forms 4.5 to 6i. I have a form which generates a report. When run on Web server, the report is generated but shows no data. The report runs fine when run in the client server mode. The parameter list in the form is generated using a procedure from one of the PL/SQL libraries and this is passed to another program unit in the form which runs the report.
    Any solutions for this?

    Rohanb,
    I had a similar situation (Reports 9i) so for all users, 95% could see the pdf and 5% get a beautyful white page...
    After updating for Acrobat Reader 7, everybody see the correct result !

  • Maximum Open Cursors Exceeded - Oracle 9 & Java Web Server 6.1

    We are facing this problem - maximum open cursors exceeded after migrating our application to Sun Java System Web Server 6.1
    We were not facing this problem with our earlier web server
    Can anybody let us know - is there any setting we need to do to avoid this.
    The current setting for this attribute in the database is quite huge - close to 2000

  • Help me choose a Java Web Server?

    I'm using Ubuntu 9.x and looking for a Java Web Server. I'm really lost as there are far too many out there and there seems none is the de-facto standard used by large corporations.
    My criteria are:
    - FREE for commercial use (requirement)
    - ease of use for installation and configuration (I'm a beginner)
    - good support from the commercial book industry is a huge plus
    - well integrated with eclipse is a huge plus
    - plenty of documentation and free community support
    - one of the major releases such as Apache Geronimo, GlassFish, JBoss, WebSphere and etc.
    I'm not concerned about major performance issues, but less hardware resource demand is better. I'm on a VPS with 256-512MB RAM.
    Any suggestions? What is the most popular one?
    I'm really lost so any suggestions would be much appreciated.

    Frankly, I'm not clear on differences between application and web server although I read this article. It sounds more like I will need an application server for my intended website with will have similar functionality as Facebook.
    Things I am likely to need are DB connection pooling and clustering since I'm hosting in the cloud.
    However, I have limited experience with a Tomcat and Java EE so I frankly don't know what I need although I have built a web site hosted on Tomcat. I figured with an Application Server I have the option of scaling to my needs without having to migrate. Then again, am I planning too far ahead and that migration isn't really that difficult?
    With that said, are there any case studies of large web sites using Tomcat strictly successfully?

    I have been stumped by this error. I have tried several different ways to install this software but I always get the same error. I believe that I have the latest version of the Sun One Web Server and I received no error notifications when I installed it! Any help would be apeciated!
    Thanks!!!!!

    I think this might occur if you don't have the patch for SunAlert 46042 installed. There's more information on this critical Solaris security vulnerability, which was reported back in 2002, at http://sunsolve.central.sun.com/search/document.do?assetkey=1-26-46042-1
    Can you run the following command to check if you have patch 109326-09 installed and let us know the result?showrev -p | grep 109326If you don't have 109326-09 or higher installed, you should install it as soon as possible. You can follow the link from the SunAlert. Better yet, install the latest Solaris 8 recommended patch cluster from http://sunsolve.sun.com/pub-cgi/show.pl?target=patches/patch-access to make sure your system is fully patched and up to date.

  • Unable to open .shtml file in Sun java web server 6.1

    Hi,
    I migrated my application from iPlanet 6.0 to Sun one web server 6.1 and after that I'm unable to open any .shtml file from my browser. This issue is not with all browser but only with few.
    Ex : It works fine with firefox 1.x but fails with firefox 2.x
    I tried adding the shtml_send Init parameters in Magnus.conf and edited the obj.conf, and my mime type has the following entry for shtml:
    type=magnus-internal/parsed-html exts=shtml,jbhtml
    Any help is appreciated
    Thanks
    SS

    What is the exact version of Web Server you are using? Should be in the error logs or try $start -version
    It would be faster if you can capture and cut and paste the data that is sent between firefox and Web Server in both the cases using /usr/sfw/bin/ssltap (http://www.mozilla.org/projects/security/pki/nss/tools/ssltap.html) or ethereal when you try to view that shtml file. We can see if its any different in both cases and try it from there.
    Also verify the steps given in http://docs.sun.com/source/817-1832-10/pgshtml.html
    mime.types should have :
    type=magnus-internal/parsed-html exts=shtml
    obj.conf should have :
    Service fn="shtml_send" type="magnus-internal/parsed-html" method="(GET|HEAD)"
    When you activate parsing, magnus.conf should have :
    Init funcs="shtml_init,shtml_send" shlib="install_dir/bin/https/bin/Shtml.dll" NativeThreads="no" fn="load-modules"
    Shtml.dll (or libShtml.so on UNIX), is located in install_dir/bin/https/bin for Windows, and install_dir/bin/https/lib for UNIX.

  • Connecting to Oracle 9i with Sun One Web Server 6.1 SP4

    I have an application that connects to an Oracle 9i database. When I run iPlanet 4.1, I am able to login to the application and run it. Since I have migrated to Sun One Web Server 6.1 SP4, I have not been able to login. Through some built in error logging, I have been able to determine that my user validation routine is receiving a Null pointer when it trys to connect to the database. I have also determined that my login servlet is executing properly. When I receive the Null pointer error, I am redirected to a failed login page, which is what is supposed to happen in such a case. I believe that I do not have the web server configured properly to connect to the database and I am not sure how to do it! Below is an excerpt from my code where the database connection occurs and the exception is detected. Any help would be appreciated!
    DriverManager.registerDriver(new oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver());
              oracleConnect = DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:oracle:thin:@" + chost + ":" + cport + ":" + csid ,u,p);
         enable = true;
    oracleConnect.close();
    }catch(java.sql.SQLException e){processError.logError("validateUser Invalue user" + e.getMessage()); enable = false;}
    catch(java.io.FileNotFoundException e){processError.logError("validate User error" + e.getMessage());}
    catch(java.io.IOException e){processError.logError("evalidateUser rror File Error " + e.getMessage());}
    catch(java.lang.NullPointerException e){processError.logError("validateUser error Null Pointer " + e.getMessage());}

    You are not using the server's built in JDBC Connection pooling, so there is no special WebServer configuration needed to connect to a database.
    If in the other hand, you want to use the built in connection pooling, then refer to this page to see how to create a connection pool

    Samples on how to configure and use JDBC connection pooling can be found in the sample apps

  • Wiki server migration from 10.5 to 10.6.2

    I have upgraded our xServe server from 10.5.x to 10.6.2. I was also able to migrate our wiki pages. When I tried to "comment" on a wiki page, I am getting the following message.
    Error from server: table discussions has no column named unauthenticated (8002)
    Looking at the wiki log, this is the error message that is being displayed.
    http://HTTPChannel,4,127.0.0.1 Unhandled Error

    Has anyone migrated their wiki pages w/o any issues? Could one migrate their wiki server pages from 10.5.x to 10.6?
    Thanks,
    Thomas

    When I upgraded our server (which was solely a Wiki server), I simply grabbed the Collaboration directory on the old server, wiped it, set up a new server with the same group and wiki name, examined the permissions on the empty Wiki it created, pasted in the old Collaboration folder, tweaked the permissions, and it worked fine.
