Web Sharing Help

Hi All
I have created a website and have uploaded it into /Library/WebServer/Documents/.
I have turned on web sharing and then opened up safari and directed it to my computer name which is
{apple.local} wothout the brackets, instead of it bringing up the web page automatically it brings up the Index of page and lists all the folders and files there.
To make it display the web page i have to type http://apple.local/index.htm
is there a way to make it automatically open the page instead of typing it in with the extension after it?
I have about 5 macs in my place and want to be able to allow all to see the page but not everyone know's about html code and dont know about putting /index.htm after the address ?

Solved the problem now, for some reason the files were called default.htm instead of index.htm
Apple must have some filter to only search for index.htm
i changed the main page to index.htm and tried the page name and worked fine

Personal Web Sharing, Help

I'm trying to start up the Personal Web Sharing on my Mac. I hit start and it gets stuck saying "Web Sharing is starting up..." I've tried everything I've found in the forums to try and fix it. Trying from the terminal doesn't work and there is no error log created when I try and start it up. Anyone have any other ideas on how to get it running on my computer? Thanks.

Help! I need to get web sharing up and running!

I am working on a web project and just downloaded MAMP only to find that the Apache Server is not running on my laptop running OSX 10.7.5. My understanding is that all I need to do is to turn on Web Sharing but for some reason it refuses to start up... I did some searching around on the web to see what i should do and then Ran Console to see what messages the system was throwing up when I started up web sharing... here is what I got...

When I open a browser and put in 192.168.1.254, I get the configuration page for the AT&T gateway! why would apache use the ip for the gateway?
Can anyone look at this and tell me what I need to do to get Apache started? This is for a very important project that I need to start for a client and I did not expect Apache not to work on my machine.. Please note that I am not too familiar with command line interface so if I need to go into terminal it would be helpful to have step by step instructions... Any help would be greatly appreciated, even pointers to references that might help...

Web Sharing with Leopard 10.5.2 and Airport Extreme Base Station HELP!!!

Ok...I want to set up web sharing on my computer but so far my attempts have failed.
I have an intel iMac with Leopard 10.5.2 installed and I have the latest Airport extreme base station (With draft n).
I turn on web sharing, and of course it works locally but not when trying to be accessed over the internet.
Now I realize that by default my routers address wont let anyone connect to my computer over the internet.
My router has an ip of 10.0.1.1, and I assigned my computer a static ip address of 10.0.1.200.
Now in the network preferences pane and the airport category, i set my computers IP (the 10.0.1.200), I put the gateway as 255.255.255.0, the router as 10.0.1.1 and the DNS as 10.0.1.1
Now going over to the airport utility I added a new entry in the port mapping section, with port 80 (both public and private) and the IP of my machine, 10.0.1.200.
Now in theory this should work but NOOOOO.
Does anyone have the same setup? a wireless network with the new airport extreme base station and has successfully configured Web Sharing?

Well here is an update.
I saw an entry in apple support that said I had to change some setting in the apache folder /etc/apache2 in order to avoid getting the 403 forbidden error. I tried this and it did not work, i checked my user configuration file as well and the path to my home site directory was correct
Anyone here have a similar setup and has it working? It shouldnt be too hard to set up web sharing through a router. It has to be possible or else a lot of people would not buy a router because of this.

Help needed with Personal Web Sharing

I need a little help. My goal is to set up my Apache server to allow people on the Internet access web pages served from my Mac. But I can't seem to get it working.
Here's what I've done so far:
1. I have enabled Personal Web Sharing in System Preferences
2. I have talked with the technicians at my ISP, and they tell me that they are not blocking port 80
3. My router has DHCP enabled, but I have assigned my Mac a static IP address (192.168.1.xx) that is outside the range of DHCP addresses.
4. I am using a cable modem connected to a Linksys WRT54G router, and I have configured the WRT54G to forward port 80 to my Mac's IP address (192.168.1.xx).
5. I have determined my Internet IP address by using http://checkip.dyndns.org/
The result:
1. When I use Safari to access 192.168.1.xx from my Mac, I see my web pages perfectly. Life is good.
2. However, when I try to access my web pages from a browser on a WindowsXP computer on my local network, I just time out. I have tried both my LAN IP address (192.168.1.xx) and the Internet IP address I obtained from http://checkip.dyndns.org/
I have looked on the Apple support and discussion pages, but I haven't been able to find anything that will fix this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Even once you get the Windows computer to see the web site on the Mac via your LAN, it's possible you won't be able to use the WAN IP address to reach it. That's called "loopback", and some routers don't allow that. If that's the case, you can test your connection by using some other site to reach your site.
What I like to do in cases like this is to use the W3C HTML Markup Validation Service. Since it's completely outside your LAN, it acts like any regular browser to your site. If it can't reach your site, then no one can. But if it reaches your site and you still can't, then your router probably doesn't support loopback. Plus, it'll point out any mistakes in your HTML markup if you have any...

Need help getting personal web sharing working again

I've somehow managed to hose my apache web server and am hoping someone can offer some advice to get it running correctly again:
my problem: I can no longer access my website files running on my mini server computer, and even when I run a simple local connection (127.0.0.1) from the mini, I get 403 Forbidden errors.
Background: I set up a web page on a mac mini that I had set up as a mini server many years ago. When I decided to resurrect the mini and use it for this purpose again, I noted that my website contents were not sitting in my user/sites folder, but instead, were in a folder called WebServer, sitting inside the Library folder of my hard drive. Unfortunately, I lost all of my notes as to how (or why) I configured my server this way.
I decided that I wanted to set up multiple local hosts to try to run two different web pages and followed the directions here: http://www.wonderhowto.com/how-to-host-multiple-websites-mac-mini-server-260994/
After messing around with this a bit I started to get the 403 errors and decided to remove all the additional code mentioned in the link above in the apache config file and go back to my original set up, but this is not working.
Is there a easy way to remove apache and install a default version like that which comes with OSX to start over with a clean config file, or can someone tell me where in the config file to search to see what else is going wrong?

PERSONAL WEB SHARING - ANYONE HELP!!!

My goal is to setup personal web sharing for my mac mini. My intent was to check out my web page design from the internet (just because I could), but now it's changed to wanting to prove that I can conquer this (for my own pride).
Here's my setup: Cable internet (Cox Communications), Airport Express, Mac Mini.
I have put the web page into the /library/webserver/documents folder. I have forwarded port 80 on my router to my local IP address. I don't have my firewall up at this point.
The scenario is as follows: I can access my webpage using my public IP address only on my local area network. If I go to work, I cannot access the page. If I go to my friend's house, I cannot access my page.
I've read countless forums in search of an answer to this dilema. I have talked to Cox about blocking port 80 (which they don't). I have now spent the better part of the day talking to Apple about this problem. They concluded that I was smart enough to set up everything correctly, but were just as stumped as I was in trying to solve the problem.
So, they directed me to this forum. If anyone has any ideas on how to fix this problem, I'm all ears. I'm willing to try pretty much anything to get this to work (my pride depends on it).

I know it may seem like this issue has been answered, but this forum seems to be the closest place for me to report on my very similar situation and see if there is a solution, if not the same one offered by Charlie, above, perhaps some other insight into the nature of this problem, and its resolution.
BACKGROUND and OBJECTIVE:
Like MacDaddy, I am trying to set up a personal web sharer on my iMac G5. I started out yesterday with the goal of setting up an FTP server, because I want others to be able to download very large video files (500 MB to 2 GB). I subscribed to .Mac and I tried this on an iDisk, but I soon learned that the upload times were so "painfully slow," as others have also reported, that I decided to try to let people grab the files directly from my own hard disk. In theory, the Mac is equipped to allow this to occur, right?
I couldn't get the FTP server setup to work, because access was denied, so I decided to shift my effort to creating a personal web server and create pages to files that could be downloaded.
SET-UP:
I use Adelphia Communications as my Internet Service Provider, and I get a dynamic Internet address, which has not changed since I began this process and which, says Adelphia tech support, is not designed to change until and unless I disconnect from their system. I have a small home network, hard-wired and connected through LinkSys BESFR41 router. I created a test home page with a couple of links; the web pages are located in the default ~username/Sites folder.
I know the difference between the 192.168.x.x addresses generated by the router to identify the computers on the network from the 24.49.xxx.xx IP address provided by Adelphia. I learned how to do the port forwarding for the router so that the iMac, which is identified as 192.168.1.102 on the network, should get the HTTP incoming traffic on port 80.

Also, I understand that the correct format for the URL to be given to my friends goes like this:
http://[IP_address]/~short name of user's account]/
So, this is how I have used it in my situation:

Also, I've learned that, for one computer on the network to bring up the personal web server pages in its browser, I should use this format:
http://192.168.1.102/~JohnMichaeliMacG5/
where, as I mentioned, the iMac G5 has been assigned the internal network address of 192.168.1.102.
I think I've got everything right, but I'm willing to be corrected in order to get this thing to work properly.
RESULTS:
Like MacDaddy reported, I can successfully access my test web page internally on my private home network. This means that I can access the web page on the iMac G5 when I key in either the 192.168.1.102 format, or when I use the 24.49.xxx.xx format, in a web browser on my PowerMac G4.
Similarly, I can access my test web page when I use the 24.49.xxx.xx format in a web browser on my iMac G5 itself.
However, no one else from the outside world can see my pages! That's the problem which MacDaddy reported, and that's the mystery I cannot understand.
Spurred by the insights of this forum, I contacted Adelphia and I asked them if the HTTP port (80) and the FTP port (21) was blocked. The tech support insisted with absolute certainty that those ports were open and that all ports (up to a very high number) were open. I pushed him hard on it, and he consulted an internal Adelphia document which listed the closed ports, and the ones I am interested in were not closed.
He referred me to Apple, which wanted me to either to upgrade my service warranty contract, or pay $49 to ask a question that they would not guarantee they could answer. I passed on that option, and decided to post my question here, where there may be some resolution on a problem that may be preventing many of us from realizing the full potential of our machines.
SOLUTIONS:
I have not tried to implement the solution that Charlie offered to MacDaddy, which apparently made him a happy camper , because I have no reason to doubt the Adelphia tech support person who resolutely assured me that port 80 is not blocked. If no one can offer any alternative insight into this problem, then perhaps I will have to try Charlie's suggestion out.
But I just thought I'd post my situation, in case someone else can explain what the heck is going on here and suggest an easier fix. It is unfortunate that something which should have taken a few clicks of the mouse to set up has turned out to be a complicated technical adventure over a twisting, winded path lasting over two days, but that's what's happened. Can anybody straighten this path out? Thanks.

Web sharing is not starting

Yesterday i reinstalled the os x bundle cause of isyn was not working properly now isync is working fine but web sharing is not starting. i checked on web sharing from system preferences when i closed the window and comeback again to sharing i see web sharing everytime unchecked i did also locked but still unchecked. if i go to localhost/mysite its say: "Safari can’t open the page “http://localhost/” because it could not connect to the server “localhost”. please tell what i am doing wrong.

Thanks web sharing is working but if i type http://localhost/gmm/index.html it says"Not Found"
The requested URL /gmm/index.html was not found on this server.
but if i type http://localhost/index.html it shows apache page and says "This page is here because the site administrator has changed the configuration of this web server. Please contact the person responsible for maintaining this server with questions. The Apache Software Foundation, which wrote the web server software this site administrator is using, has nothing to do with maintaining this site and cannot help resolve configuration issues." but i can't see this page in the Sites folder. I didn't change any thing, don't know what to do.

Turning on Web Sharing does not work and fails to load apache web server

Sort of answering my own question here but hope it will be useful to other people and save them some time.
After receiving my shiny new imac with os x lion pre-installed, I was a little dismayed and confused when I went to System Preferences -> Internet and Wireless -> Sharing and attempted to check the Web Sharing. Every time I clicked this option I was told Web Sharing was starting but would then repeatedly fail and apache failed to start.
Looking in the Console I find:

TO FIX THIS ISSUE:
It appears /usr/lib/libpq.5.dylib does not exist but /usr/lib/libpq.5.3.dylib does.
Fix by creating a symbolic link from /usr/lib/libpq.5.3.dylib to /usr/lib/libpq.5.dylib

I have posted this as a new post as well but if anyone has five mins could they take a look - I would be very grateful. Here you go:
I am new to all this so I have probably made some simple errors and I hope someone can help me. I will retell what I have done as I haven't a clue what part of what I have done has mucked things up.
I am really stuck. Web sharing will not start on my iMac running Lion OS X. It did work fine and then I wanted to activate PHP so my test website contact form would work (and send the data on the form throught to my email address.
Before I did anything I turned on websharing and could view my website from another computer using: http://192.168.1.4/~stewartfergusson/

I then did a few things in terminal and will paste below what I did:

An important point to note is that I now appear to have more than one http.config file and they are located in the following locations:
1) Macintosh HD/etc/apache2/httpd.conf.default
2) Macintosh HD/etc/apache2/httpd.conf.default.default
3) Macintosh HD/etc/apache2/original/httpd.conf
I edited this file (which one I have not got a clue) and also the php.ini file within Macintosh HD/etc/ using Terminal - the command I used was sudo cp php.ini.default php.ini
This php.ini file now exists in two locations now as well:
1) Macintosh HD/etc/php.ini
2) Macintosh HD/etc/php.ini.default
I then edited this file by changing the line of code below from:
514 error_reporting = E_ALL & ~E_NOTICE (I think it said E_DEPRECATED actually) but I am lifting this from the web page in the link above)
To:
514 error_reporting = E_ALL
I then saved this file.
I then deactivated web sharing in System Preferences and since then have not been able to restart Web Sharing. I click it and it flashes orange for a second then does not start.
This was all done to activate PHP on my iMac so I can host my own site which has a PHP contact form page.
Please help I am so out of my depth I am very worried I may have changed things and I am going to forget what I did.

Personal Web sharing not installed HOW - do I install?

Hi - I have had an extremely frustrating 4 hours or so between trying to google a solution to the problem and examining the contents of the installation disk with pacifist - I am still none the wiser.
I have not tried to set up a localhost server on my Intel Mac running 10.4.9 I have had since september and it should be as easy as pie to do so from what I have read.... but not in my case!
I went to apple > system preferences > sharing and tried to check personal web sharing as suggested in many places but get this for my trouble
'Web Sharing is not installed on this computer. To install Web Sharing, use the Mac OS X installer.'
My question is how do I do so without dausing a reformat and still not getting the option?
I have used pacifist to try and locate either PWS or apache installers inon the disc but sinply am at a loss to find either. Hope someone can help

NOt that I am aware of - I may have tried to do something like launch the apache index page from httpd or similar in the first couple of days of owning the machine but unless by some sure accident I have not altered any settings.... ( I never got into admin settings or any of that from what I remember)
I'm not even looking for PHP or mySQL now - Just a running WS so that I can test CSS in it.
Even so - I still have absolutely no idea where the pws taller is located on the installation disk that I am referred to so therefore am not willing to unstall it for reasons mentioned. I most certainly do not want a reinstall for the sake of a little but in my case neccessary application
Good point Gnarlodious - like to hear what angle you are coming from on this (particularly if you can help me get this sorted out from the disk as Apple suggest. Much as I love my conversion to apple I have to say the documentation and overall support from the site is appalling (I thought Microsoft was bad......). Instructions such as that encountered on the PWS toggle are vague to say the very least

PERSONAL WEB SHARING ON iMAC G5 WILL NOT START

i am hoping someone would be able to help me on this issue. i attempted to start the Personal Web Sharing service on my computer (iMAC G5 with MAC OS 10.4) from System Preferences > Sharing. however, after i highlight Personal Web Sharing on the list of services and click the Start button, the message changes to "web sharing starting up..." and simply remains that way (i've waited for a long time). it does not change to "web sharing on".
am i doing something wrong? is it possible that my Apache installation has been compromised? my goal is to be able to use my computer to create and run .php web pages.
any help / suggestions are greatly appreciated

Sorry, this still doesn't seem to be working.
Actually, it's me steering you wrong. It's been a while since I fooled around with the Entropy PHP installation and it looks like he's changed it.
He used to put the configuration stuff for PHP at the bottom of the main Apache config file, but now he's putting it in that separate file in the httpd users directory. That's why moving the default Apache configuration file into place didn't help.
You have two choices: one is to just forget about the PHP5 stuff for now and go with Apple's default PHP install. The other is to try to get PHP5 up and running.
The first option is very easy: just run this command:
<pre class="command">mv private/etc/httpd/users/+entropy-php.conf ~/Desktop</pre>That will put the offending file on the desktop. Now try starting the web server. Most likely, PHP won't work yet, but Apache should start. In order to use the default PHP5, you need to make some changes to the httpd.conf file. You can use pico in the Terminal. It's pretty simple and the key commands are printed at the bottom. Where you see the up arrow listed, that means to use the "control" key, i.e., "control"-x to exit. You need to use sudo, though so you have root privileges:
<pre class="command">sudo pico /etc/httpd/httpd.conf</pre>Search ("control"-w) for "php". The first line you'll see is this:
<pre class="command">#LoadModule php4_module libexec/httpd/libphp4.so</pre>Uncomment it by removing the "#" from the start of the line. Search again until you find this line:

If, on the other hand, you'd rather use the Entropy PHP5 installation, post back and tell me and we'll see if we can figure out what's up with that...

Personal web sharing+php 5.2.2

I installed PHP 5.2.2 for Apache 2 (I'm working on making a simple photo gallery) and it worked just after i installed it but it didn't give me any errors when my code didn't work. But now whenever I try and start web sharing it just says "web sharing starting up..." and stays like that. looking at the console I see a error:

Cannot load /usr/local/php5/libphp5.so into server: (reason unknown)

any ideas on how to fix this? I tried reinstalling PHP but it did not help.

You have two choices here. One is to just read the Apache error logs with the Console app. Otherwise, you'll need to find the php.ini file and enable sending the errors to the browser (they're off by default because it's something of a security risk). This page has pretty good instructions for doing that. His directions give the php.ini file's location as /usr/local/php/lib/php.ini, but mine, using the Entropy PHP5 distribution is at /usr/local/php5/lib/php.ini (note the extra "5").

Firing Up Web Sharing
Here’s how you turn your Mac into a low-budget Web site: Put the HTML documents, graphics, and files you want to publish into your Home → Sites folder. Every account’s Home folder has a Sites folder, and therefore the Mac can actually serve up lots of Web sites at once. Your Web site’s home page, by the way, won’t appear unless it’s named index.html. (Apple has already put an index.html document into your Sites folder, just to give you the idea; feel free to replace it.) And the other files you put in Sites aren’t accessible unless they’re linked from your index.html page.
Open System Preferences; click Sharing. Turn on the Web Sharing radio button.
Use the Sharing System Preferences pane to make designated folders on your hard drive available to anyone on your network. Note that your Mac’s IP address, shown here in underlined type, works only when people connect from across the local network. It probably won’t work from across the Internet; see the box on the facing page. You’ve just made the contents of your Sites folder available to anyone who connects to your Mac. Also note the line below the Computer Name box. That’s your Mac’s Bonjour name, which is a bit friendlier than its IP address. Send your network address to your friends and coworkers
People on your local office network can use your Mac’s Bonjour name to connect. It appears at the top of the Sharing pane, as shown in Figure 22-1. For example, your colleagues can type http:// office-mac.local/ ~ chris into their Web browsers, where office-mac.local is your Mac’s Bonjour name and chris is your short user name. If other people will be connecting from the Internet, you need to figure out your public IP address; as noted in the box on The IP Address Mess: Port Forwarding, that might be your router’s IP address, not your Mac’s. Your Mac Web site’s address might be, for example, http:// 111.222.3.44/ ~ chris/ (the number is your public IP address, and the name should be your short user name). Don’t forget the final slash. Tell your friends to bookmark it so they won’t have to remember all that. You’ve just put your Mac-based Web page on the Internet for all to see— that is, all who know your secret Web address. Maybe you’ll want to distribute the address only to other people on your office network, using your tiny Web site as a distribution source for documents. Or maybe you’ll want to go whole-hog, hosting an e-commerce Web site (read on). The Mac’s Own Web Site The instructions above show you how to create a Web site in your Home → Sites folder. In other words, they guide you through the process of creating a personal Web site. But if you have an Administrator account (Chapter 12), you can also put your Web pages into the main hard drive window’s Library → WebServer → Documents folder. This is your Mac’s main Web site folder, and its address is simply, for example, http:// 111.222.3.44/. That is, it’s just your public IP address, no user name needed. (Here again, if people will be connecting from across your office network, they can replace the IP number with your Mac’s Bonjour name.) Working with this primary Web site folder is only slightly different from the personal ones described above. Because you’re now working inside an official Mac OS X system folder, you must mind your permissions. Using the File → Get Info command, you should set up the permissions of any folders and documents inside the Library → Web-Server → Documents folder (an Images folder, for example). That way, you can ensure that you’re in control of which visitors are allowed to do what with your Web documents. The Easiest Way to Distribute Files Here’s a handy secret: If there isn’t a document whose name is index.html in your Sites folder (or index.html.en in your Library → WebServer → Documents folder), then visitors see, in their browsers, a handy list of the files that are in that folder (see Figure 21-2). This is a terrific convenience: It offers a quick, simple way for you to make a bunch of documents available for downloading. All your visitors have to do is click one of these file names. It downloads immediately, no matter what kind of computer your Web visitor is using.

Please tell me how to reinstall Personal Web Sharing

I did something to my Personal Web Sharing. I thought maybe it was the file permissions but they seem to be right. Owner is "myusername" and group is also "myusername". In any case Personal Web sharing will NOT turn on. Do I have to reinstall the OS X? This will be a pain since I have to start from the install cd's and work my way up to tiger. Seems like there should be an easier way, like can someone just give me a copy of the folder? Would that be the same for a g5. I am on tiger.

I don't know which log you want but I looked in the filemaker server log. I wouldn't think the filemaker server has anything to do with why the personal file sharing can't be turned on? This was earlier today anyway.

I reinstalled it so it should have wiped out the other settings. I also uninstalled FM Server Advanced. If it is uninstalled theoretically Personal WEb SErving should be okay. I don't think Personal WEb sharing was affected by the Fm SErver install. it has separate php config files.

Web sharing - viewing html files from Mac to PC

I am creating a website using QuarkXpress. Now I uploaded my html and image folder directly to my Site folder. My client has a PC, but cannot open the http address to view the page. Web sharing is on, also file sharing. What did I miss?? Thanks for your help.
I highlighted websharing in system preferences and gave my client my computer address. But the page does not load?
What's the difference from a remote computer and local IP range? I am confused there???

To see the difference between local & Remote, compare your IP in System Preferences>Network>TCP/IP tab & what your outside IP is...
