Web sharing in os x lion?

When I go to system preferences>sharing and check the web sharing box, it attempts to start, then a little dash mark shoes up, and web sharing doesn't start. I've tried clicking it continuously, but I always have the same problem. Does anyone have a solution for this?

Thanks Zyriab and Thomas A Reed,
I am now able to start/stop/restart apache server and the "It works!" test page is alive.
However, the original http://localhost/~username doesn't work this time - A "403 Forbidden" page shows up.
1. mod_userdir.so is loaded and configuration file /private/etc/apache2/extra/httpd-userdir.conf is well set.
2. /Users/username/Sites/index.html is there and permission is granted for others (-rw-rw-rw-).
Still trouble shooting the problem now.

  • Web sharing will not start OS X Lion

    Hi there,
I am new to all this so I have probably made some simple errors and I hope someone can help me. I will retell what I have done as I haven't a clue what part of what I have done has mucked things up.
I am really stuck. Web sharing will not start on my iMac running Lion OS X. It did work fine and then I wanted to activate PHP so my test website contact form would work (and send the data on the form throught to my email address.
Before I did anything I turned on websharing and could view my website from another computer using: http://192.168.1.4/~stewartfergusson/
I think followed the instructions on this link to activate PHP - http://foundationphp.com/tutorials/php_leopard.php
I then did a few things in terminal and will paste below what I did:
    Password:

    ln: /usr/lib/libpq.5.dylib: File exists
    Stewart-Fergussons-iMac:etc stewartfergusson$ sudo apachectl -t

    Stewart-Fergussons-iMac:etc stewartfergusson$ sudo apachectl configtest
    Password:

Invalid command '1', perhaps misspelled or defined by a module not included in the server configuration
    Stewart-Fergussons-iMac:etc stewartfergusson$
An important point to note is that I now appear to have more than one http.config file and they are located in the following locations:
    1) Macintosh HD/etc/apache2/httpd.conf.default
    2) Macintosh HD/etc/apache2/httpd.conf.default.default
    3) Macintosh HD/etc/apache2/original/httpd.conf
I edited this file (which one I have not got a clue) and also the php.ini file within Macintosh HD/etc/ using Terminal - the command I used was sudo cp php.ini.default php.ini
This php.ini file now exists in two locations now as well:
    1) Macintosh HD/etc/php.ini
    2) Macintosh HD/etc/php.ini.default
I then edited this file by changing the line of code below from:
514 error_reporting = E_ALL & ~E_NOTICE (I think it said E_DEPRECATED actually) but I am lifting this from the web page in the link above)
    To:
    514 error_reporting = E_ALL
    I then saved this file.
I then deactivated web sharing in System Preferences and since then have not been able to restart Web Sharing. I click it and it flashes orange for a second then does not start.
This was all done to activate PHP on my iMac so I can host my own site which has a PHP contact form page.
Please help I am so out of my depth I am very worried I may have changed things and I am going to forget what I did.
If you need to know anything then please ask.
    Thank you so much

  • Use Lion Server to set up security in Web Sharing

Can I use Lion Server to set up security in Web Sharing?
I want a password prompt to appear when someone comes to look at my Web Sharing files.
I have tried to do this manually in Snow Leopard and Lion, and am considering buying Lion Server just for this one purpose.
Does the admin GUI in Lion Server have an option that allows you to set up a password prompt for folks that look at my Web Sharing files?
    THanks.
    mac

    Miracles do happen.
Because I just bought Lion Server, I was able to get a guy from the Apple Server support group on the phone, for a long time, and he helped me set this up using the Server app and the Server Admin app.
Now I have a password prompt on my Web Sharing files.
It's an incredible relief to have this working.
    Thanks for the responses.

  • Problem with web sharing in Lion

Until recently web sharing in Lion used 127.0.0.1 and 127.0.0.1/~user/ for websites. Now it uses 192.168.1.105 and 192.168.105/~user/, where 192.168.1.105 is the IP of my MacBook Air assigned by my router. Since i only want my websites for development purposes and not for online access i want to use 127.0.0.1 and 127.0.0.1/~user/ again.
    How can i do that?

The pdf files in the Developer directory say to type:
         sudo <Xcode directory>/Library/uninstall-devtools --mode=all
    in a Terminal window.
I tried that, and got back the message:
-bash: Xcode: No such file or directory
and the directory is still there.

  • Is anyone having Web Sharing issues after switching from 10.6 to Mountain Lion?

I want to upgrade to Mountain Lion from Snow Leopard (10.6.8) but I wanted to see if anyone is experiencing any issues with their Web Sharing after making the switch. I use Web Sharing daily to build and test  web sites for my clients and when I made the switch to 10.6 none of my database driven sites worked. Ultimately I had to install a new version of PHP 5 because 10.6 came with and older version.  And I had to reinstall SQL for my databases along with some other related items.  It wasn't a major problem but it took a couple of days to track down the issue.  Anyone seen any weirdness like that with Mountain Lion?

Web sharing is absent in Mountain Lion. Apple removed the feature. There're some unofficial hacks to bring it back, search the forums.

  • Web sharing problem Mountain Lion

Well he doesn't include web sharing any more, what can I do?
    I've seen http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5230?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
but I still know nothing to do ...
Could anyone give me some advices?

You should know that we can't discuss Mountain Lion.

  • Lion Web Sharing not working

So, let's say I thought of making my MBP early 2011 running Lion (Not LION SERVER) to be a HTTP host. I'd like to switch Web Sharing on in System Preference but it won't turn on. I pressed on the check box, and after 1 second, it became unchecked again. It showed on the right hand side that it is "starting" but then it changed back to "Off". How strange it is. I've tried for hundreds of times (really!). I don't wanna change~/System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.apache.httpd.plist cuz it actually caused the problem of MBP not booting up. Any other methods will be fine. Thanks!

Thanks for your reply, but it doesn't seem to me that it's the file that broke the apache server.
The fact is: I couldn't turn on Web Sharing, so I changed the mentioned file.  But it doesn't help.  Also my MBP won't boot after this.  And after days of googling on another machine, I fixed the booting problem (I'm now using my MBP!).  But the Web Sharing still refuses to be turned on.  I've checked the file I edited and it is still there edited.  I'm afraid changing it back would cause MBP not booting again!  What should I do now?

  • Help! I need to get web sharing up and running!

I am working on a web project and just downloaded MAMP only to find that the Apache Server is not running on my laptop running OSX 10.7.5. My understanding is that all I need to do is to turn on Web Sharing but for some reason it refuses to start up... I did some searching around on the web to see what i should do and then Ran Console to see what messages the system was throwing up when I started up web sharing... here is what I got...
10/8/13 11:53:16.724 AM org.apache.httpd: httpd: Could not reliably determine the server's fully qualified domain name, using 192.168.1.254 for ServerName
When I open a browser and put in 192.168.1.254, I get the configuration page for the AT&T gateway! why would apache use the ip for the gateway?
Can anyone look at this and tell me what I need to do to get Apache started? This is for a very important project that I need to start for a client and I did not expect Apache not to work on my machine.. Please note that I am not too familiar with command line interface so if I need to go into terminal it would be helpful to have step by step instructions... Any help would be greatly appreciated, even pointers to references that might help...
    Many thanks!
    David

Not sure about MAMP but have a look at Setting up a local web server on Lion and Mountain Lion  for how to get apache running.

  • Turning on Web Sharing does not work and fails to load apache web server

Sort of answering my own question here but hope it will be useful to other people and save them some time.
After receiving my shiny new imac with os x lion pre-installed, I was a little dismayed and confused when I went to System Preferences -> Internet and Wireless -> Sharing and attempted to check the Web Sharing. Every time I clicked this option I was told Web Sharing was starting but would then repeatedly fail and apache failed to start.
Looking in the Console I find:
org.apache.httpd: dyld: Library not loaded: /usr/lib/libpq.5.dylib
    org.apache.httpd: Referenced from: /usr/sbin/httpd
    org.apache.httpd: Reason: image not found

  • I cant activate my web sharing in system preferences

I cant activate my web sharing in system preferences, what do I do ?
    tks for help...

Here's a quickly copy and pasted excert from David Pogue's book, Lion: The Missing Manual...
    Firing Up Web Sharing
Here’s how you turn your Mac into a low-budget Web site: Put the HTML documents, graphics, and files you want to publish into your Home → Sites folder. Every account’s Home folder has a Sites folder, and therefore the Mac can actually serve up lots of Web sites at once. Your Web site’s home page, by the way, won’t appear unless it’s named index.html. (Apple has already put an index.html document into your Sites folder, just to give you the idea; feel free to replace it.) And the other files you put in Sites aren’t accessible unless they’re linked from your index.html page.
Open System Preferences; click Sharing. Turn on the Web Sharing radio button.
Use the Sharing System Preferences pane to make designated folders on your hard drive available to anyone on your network. Note that your Mac’s IP address, shown here in underlined type, works only when people connect from across the local network. It probably won’t work from across the Internet; see the box on the facing page. You’ve just made the contents of your Sites folder available to anyone who connects to your Mac. Also note the line below the Computer Name box. That’s your Mac’s Bonjour name, which is a bit friendlier than its IP address. Send your network address to your friends and coworkers
People on your local office network can use your Mac’s Bonjour name to connect. It appears at the top of the Sharing pane, as shown in Figure 22-1. For example, your colleagues can type http:// office-mac.local/ ~ chris into their Web browsers, where office-mac.local is your Mac’s Bonjour name and chris is your short user name. If other people will be connecting from the Internet, you need to figure out your public IP address; as noted in the box on The IP Address Mess: Port Forwarding, that might be your router’s IP address, not your Mac’s. Your Mac Web site’s address might be, for example, http:// 111.222.3.44/ ~ chris/ (the number is your public IP address, and the name should be your short user name). Don’t forget the final slash. Tell your friends to bookmark it so they won’t have to remember all that. You’ve just put your Mac-based Web page on the Internet for all to see— that is, all who know your secret Web address. Maybe you’ll want to distribute the address only to other people on your office network, using your tiny Web site as a distribution source for documents. Or maybe you’ll want to go whole-hog, hosting an e-commerce Web site (read on). The Mac’s Own Web Site The instructions above show you how to create a Web site in your Home → Sites folder. In other words, they guide you through the process of creating a personal Web site. But if you have an Administrator account (Chapter   12), you can also put your Web pages into the main hard drive window’s Library → WebServer → Documents folder. This is your Mac’s main Web site folder, and its address is simply, for example, http:// 111.222.3.44/. That is, it’s just your public IP address, no user name needed. (Here again, if people will be connecting from across your office network, they can replace the IP number with your Mac’s Bonjour name.) Working with this primary Web site folder is only slightly different from the personal ones described above. Because you’re now working inside an official Mac OS X system folder, you must mind your permissions. Using the File → Get Info command, you should set up the permissions of any folders and documents inside the Library → Web-Server → Documents folder (an Images folder, for example). That way, you can ensure that you’re in control of which visitors are allowed to do what with your Web documents. The Easiest Way to Distribute Files Here’s a handy secret: If there isn’t a document whose name is index.html in your Sites folder (or index.html.en in your Library → WebServer → Documents folder), then visitors see, in their browsers, a handy list of the files that are in that folder (see Figure   21-2). This is a terrific convenience: It offers a quick, simple way for you to make a bunch of documents available for downloading. All your visitors have to do is click one of these file names. It downloads immediately, no matter what kind of computer your Web visitor is using.

Maybe this will help? It will at least bump the message up again!

  • Web Sharing fix?

I have just discovered that web sharing has been removed from Mountain Lion.
I use it to test iPhone web apps over my local network. I found it was much faster, simpler and more secure to setup than having to test from an on-line server.
I use MAMP for its server features but would like to know how to reinstate web sharing without conflicting with MAMP.
    Any help appreciated.
    Christo
PS: Apple Inc., please reinstate the web server feature into Mac Os.

Web sharing is still there. It was only the button in system preferences that was removed. See my User Tip to re-enable it: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3083

  • Web Sharing Not Working on External Computers

OK, here's my problem.  I cannot view my websites on external computers (e.g. work computer, neighbor's computer, etc.) that I'm hosting on my Mac Mini.
I'm running a new Mac Mini with OS X Lion, with the latest update.  I have Web Sharing turned on.  I have my firewall on, but the options show that I'm allowing web sharing.
When I visit my site on my local computer, it works fine.  I type my domain name in my browser, and it finds my website.
But when I'm on an external computer anywhere else I get this message:
Safari can’t connect to the server.
Safari can’t open the page “http://192.168.1.100/~vgadisciple/clan_vga/index.html” because Safari can’t connect to the server “192.168.1.100”.
I have tried various browsers.  I have turned off my firewall.  I have cleared the cache in the various browsers.   I have made sure Apache is running via my Terminal.   I have tried everything I can think off.
Why can't I view my website from any other computer besides my local machine?  Please help.  I'm tired of paying $200 a year to a company to host my website when I can do it myself.
Any help resolving this issue will be greatly appreciated.

OK, no one was able to help me.  I realized what I was doing wrong.... and I should have realized it...
192.168.x.xxx IP Addresses are always local IP addresses, and computers on the WAN cannot acccess that via the hypertext transfer protocol.  I should have known this, but Apple's web sharing was pretty clear that my 192.168 IP address would work, and I thought behind the scenes it would work out the details.  But since OS X Lion is more like Windows ME than previous OS X versions, I shouldn't have assumed that.
To make it work, I subsititued my LAN IP address of 192.168.1.100 with the IP address from my ISP.
Then after that I logged into my router and I used port forwarding, named the port HTML and using port 80, via TCP, and forwarded that to my local 192.168.1.100 IP address.  And now it works fine.
So for example, my URL, instead of being http://192.168.1.100/~vgadisciple/clan_vga/index.html, I substituted 192.168.x.xxx with my IP address given to me by my ISP, which is 98.203.xxx.xx.
    Works like a charm.

I googled around and followed the advice in http://support.apple.com/kb/TA25038 , which matches my problem closely.  However, that solution does not repair the problem.
    My Sites directory and permissions:
    v21837:~ drf$ ls -la ~/Sites
    total 7160
    drwxr-xr-x   19 drf  staff      646 Aug  7 14:06 .
    drwxr-xr-x+ 197 drf  staff     6698 Aug  6 17:44 ..
    -rw-r--r--@   1 drf  staff    12292 Aug  3 21:26 .DS_Store
    -rw-r--r--    1 drf  staff        0 Feb  2  2008 .localized
    -rw-r--r--    1 drf  staff        3 Aug  7 14:06 00Junk.txt
    Safari on http://localhost/~drf/00Junk.txt:
    Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /~drf/00Junk.txt on this server.
    Safari on a non-existent file:
    Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /~drf/Junk.txtq on this server.

I solved my problem.  I had cut and pasted the information into the /etc/apache2/users/UserName.conf file from a web page and used non-matching up/down quote marks like this:
    <Directory “/Users/username/Sites/”>
    rather than matching ones like:
    <Directory "/Users/username/Sites/">
Apache seemed to parse it OK with 'apachectl -t', but with the up/down quotation marks, it did not enable my directory, apparently taking the quotes as literal parts of the directory name.

  • Web sharing starts but will not turn off

I have enabled web sharing and been running successfully for a long time, recently upgraded to Lion.
The problem I have now is that I can turn Apache on through the Web Sharing prefs but it will not turn off, technically that not true as the instance is killed off but something is restarting the httpd processes (new pid's). As far as the Pref pane is concerned Apache is off (un checked box), though in reality, a new instance is running.
The only way to turn it off is by su apachectl stop.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Adam.

Have you tried to hold down the sleep and home keys for about 20 seconds or so, until you see a silver apple. See if you can get it to reboot.

  • Start web sharing with terminal

    Hi All
in os 10.6 I can start web sharing simply using this command in the terminal:
    sudo apachectl start
this is the same that enabling web sharing in the system preferences.
Now in os 10.7 it don't works.
    Using
    sudo /usr/sbin/httpd -k start -D WEBSHARING_ON
it seems works but system preferences still show web sharing disabled and after restarting computer, web sharing is disabled
    someone can help me?

Perhaps you're thinking of the SnowLeopard behavior. In Lion, starting Web Sharing is not exactly the same as starting httpd. Please inspect the contents of org.apache.httpd.plist, before and after starting Web Sharing in System Prefs, and it will help you understand. Before, you'll see something like:
    <key>ProgramArguments</key><array>
         <string>/usr/sbin/httpd</string>
         <string>-D</string>
         <string>FOREGROUND</string>
    </array>
After starting it, you'll see the WEBSHARING_ON flag added:
    <key>ProgramArguments</key><array>
         <string>/usr/sbin/httpd</string>
         <string>-D</string>
         <string>FOREGROUND</string>
         <string>-D</string>
         <string>WEBSHARING_ON</string>
    </array>
And, have you noticed that even if you load the launchd.plist with -w, the Disabled flag in the launchd.plist is always set to True? That's because the actual state of the launchd job is reflected in this file:
    /var/db/launchd.db/com.apple.launchd/overrides.plist
Finally, apachectl start/stop simply loads and unloads the launchd.plist.
