Web Sharing wont start up
System Preferences/sharing/service - Personal Web Sharing
I can get it to work, I click on Personal Web sharing, and all it says is "Web sharing starting up..." and nothing more happens.
If I restart the Mac and check the Sharing out again, it just onchecked again.
Why will it not start up?
This error occurs because you already have a service
running on port 80, possibly a virtual server,
configd or ssl service. Look for two instances of the
"Listen 80" directive in your httpd.conf file. Any
other applications you have installed?
What happens when you say
sudo
apachectl configtest
I'm not sure where I find this httpd.conf document
I did due some chances to some thing so sett up SSH tunnels and VNC screen-sharing software to use my Mac from any PC over the Internet (and LAN).
I fallowed these instruction from this website howto.diveintmark.org/remote-mac/
there is a video that I fallowed on this side, this is a direct link The first short part shows how to set up the Mac, I'm not sure if that is the case, if it is, than I have the option too go back to the past, I have my Macs "System" files and "Library" files backed up with Apples BackUp

Hi all,
web sharing has stopped working, so i tried to run apache from terminal for clues.
when i went to run apache (./startApache.sh) i got the below:
dyld: Library not loaded: /usr/lib/libpq.5.dylib

Web Services wont start, please help
Hello all,
I appologize up front but I dont really have a lot of experience with OSX server. So yesterday I got a report that my companied website was down. I went in to check the server and it wouldnt log in just got the pinwheel for about 10 minutes so we rebooted it (me and my IT staff). Upon reboot we could login and all seems well except that the web services wont start and our website is still down. when you try and start the service you get:
" A service has encountered and error, Try to refresh the view (172.18.180.15/Web). Report the problem to the administrator if it persists. (could not start web service - details in error log)."
but when you go to the log to see what is going on the last entry says:
" [Thu Jan 15 14:47:27 2009] [error] [client 172.18.180.15] File does not exist: /Library/WebServer/Documents/error.html "
that is about the time that the website appears to have gone offline... Also after navigating to the directory it says, there indeed is no error.html but all other files appear to be there. I have also used the terminal to read the last 100 lines of the error log file using tail -100 /var/log/httpd/error_log and get:

So im at a loss and any ideas would be much appricated. I know that earlier in the day one of our web people updated our website to add a calender using dreamweaver but dont know much about exactly what was done.

Troy SmithThanks for the responce. So it looks to me like the content of the webpage is all there , minus the error.html file. Its all located in Library/webserver/documents. I have gone there and am even able to bring up our webpage by launching index.html and it appears to work perfectly with no broken links. you just cant access it from the outside world.

i have recently installed the Darwin web streaming serer onto my Mac Mini (running on Mac OS X 10.4.9) and since installing it my web sharing option doesnt start up or says web sharing is not installed. i have restarted my mac and re installed Mac OS X but still doesnt work. i am trying to avoid reformatting my hard drive.

Mini Mac Power PC, Mac Book Pro Mac OS X (10.4.9)Don't reformat your hard drive, it won't do any good. The streaming server takes the place of apache which Apple considers "web sharing". If you started up apache and it also listened on port 80, which would you expect to get when you made an http request? You now have "web sharing" up all the time (confirm this by putting "http://localhost/" into your browser) just not with the official Apple server, which is why you can't select that option.

Web Sharing Not Starting Up After installing PHP
On Mac OS 10.4.9 on a G4 PPowerbook, using O'Reilly's "Learning PHP and MySQL," my Personal Web Sharing will not start up.
I enabled Apache per their instructions and things seemed fine.. Then I i installed PHP with these commands, sudo vi/etc/httpd/httpd.conf , then %s/#LoadModule php/LoadModule php/. Then %x/#AddModule php/AddModule php/. Then <espcape>:wq. Then
vi ~/Sites/test.php

<?php phpinfo() ?>

First of all, the test query from the book didn't work quite right, but now my Personal Web Sharing won't start up. It says "starting up." forever.
Help. And if you can't tell, I have extremely limited knowledge of Unix and command lines, etc.
What do I do? Assume I know nothing... : )The first thing to do is read the Apache error log which will give you more detail about what's gone wrong.

The other thing to do is run configtest which might also indicate errors in the configuration:
<pre class=command>sudo apachectl configtest</pre>
although it'll probably tell you the same thing as the error log. -
Personal Web Sharing perpertually starting
I've been trying to set up my websharing with authentication access (using a .htpasswd file). Unfortunately, I think I've broken something; in the Sharing Preference Pane, Web Sharing is continuously starting up - it's never 'started', and the button is greyed out. I can access the web server, but only sporadically - sometimes I can see files on the server, sometimes the server cannot be found, seemingly at random.
iBook 12" G4 Mac OS X (10.4.3)Did you save your default httpd.conf file? Switching back to the default file should solve the problem (but would of course undo all of the changes you made trying to set up the .htpasswd).

Personal Web sharing not starting
I've been trying to start personal web sharing and it's not starting up...I already did the apachectl start command in the terminal and I got the following message:

I had problems installing php before that happened...and it seems that I can't still the latest version of php since I tried installing it many times and all came out with errors. What can I do in order to make web sharng start? Thanks in advance

Reboot... of course you dont have to trash them, you can just move them to the desktop to drag back if it doesn't work. -
Personal Web Sharing wont work!
Im trying to get personal websharing working.
I went into preferences/sharing then clicked on the Personal Web Sharing option, then click start.
Nothing is happening except that it says "Web Sharing starting up" ive been waiting 10 minutes and still nothing has happend.Have you tried loading the URL ?

Personal Web Sharing not starting in 10.4.7
Okay, I've been reading through here trying to fix my problem with PWS, but my symtoms don't match anyone elses. I haven't tried installing PHP 5 (though I want to) and I haven't tried upgrading to Apache 2 (though I don't know if OS X 10.4.6 - 4.7 includes Apache 1 or 2).
My problem starts off the same as everyone elses. I go to System Preferances, Sharing, Select PWS, select Start and it just sits there and does nothing.
I've gone into my console and cleared it out completely, then tried starting PWS and in my console.log I got:

Web cam wont start message says in use by another application
Hello I have recently purchased the Creative LIve!Cam Optia and for some reason the person I am talking to can't see me but I can see them just fine. Every time I go to call someone on Skype I plug in my camera and when the person answers a message pops up in the call tab saying "video error cannot find video source , check to see if it is in use by another application". I have no idea what other application could be using it because I ended up installing most of what came on the installation Cd. I have tried everything from selecting tools on skype then hit options, then I clicked on video settings, then I selected Li've!Cam Optia as my web cam as opposed to selecting default web cam. Then the same message pops up again " Skype did not find preferred video source. Webcam could be in use by another application". The thing that really frustrates me is that sometimes it works perfectly find then it freezes and I try to restart the video and then I loose it completely! PLease help someone I have returned camera prior to this one I don't want to have to do it again for this one. Thank you.
Two choices left - download iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ - and use its rebuild command - this will rebuild yoru library leaving the original untouched so you can go back to it is things do not make yo happy - this will keep your edits, metadata and events but will not keep projects
If that does not work Right click on the iPhoto library and show package contents - look in the masters folder - are your original photos there? If so (and if you have adaquate disk space) duplicate the masters folder and rename the iPhoto library "iPhoto library old" - depress the option key and launch iPhoto ancd create a new library - drag the masters folder to the iPhoto icon in the Dock to import your original photos with your events
This will give you a new library with your originals - edits, projects and metadata changes will not be available
And critically start Time Machine up and leave it running

Personal Web Sharing doesn't start up
A while ago I shut off the "Personal Web Sharing" tool simply because I did not need it. However at this moment I'm trying to restart it (which I assume is the Apache web service). So I go to System Preferences -> Sharing, and tick the "Personal Web Sharing" box. However, when I do, all I get is the message "Web sharing is starting up..." It stalls there and doesn't go any further.
I haven't made any changes to Apache, but I have attempted to install PHP on my system using the package on http://www.entropy.ch/software/macosx/ -- it failed, giving me a generic error message.
Is there a solution to this problem? Does it have anything to do with the messed-up PHP installation?I am experiencing the same problem: going through the System Preferences (in OSX 10.4.10), to the Sharing pane, then the Services Tab, and clicking Start Personal Web Sharing only gives me "Starting Web Sharing..." and never actually starts it.
I have tried the following solutions:
• replaced httpd.conf files using both the httpd.conf.default file from the machine in error as well as from another Mac (adapting the usernames as appropriate)
• replacing the entire /private/etc/httpd directory with the one from the other Mac, whose Web Server will start up
• when starting it via Terminal, i get "fopen: no such file or directory" so I created it... no dice.
Can anybody give me any more suggestions?
If not, I do have AppleCare on it - think they might help? -
Turning on Web Sharing does not work and fails to load apache web server
Sort of answering my own question here but hope it will be useful to other people and save them some time.
After receiving my shiny new imac with os x lion pre-installed, I was a little dismayed and confused when I went to System Preferences -> Internet and Wireless -> Sharing and attempted to check the Web Sharing. Every time I clicked this option I was told Web Sharing was starting but would then repeatedly fail and apache failed to start.
Looking in the Console I find:

TO FIX THIS ISSUE:
It appears /usr/lib/libpq.5.dylib does not exist but /usr/lib/libpq.5.3.dylib does.

An important point to note is that I now appear to have more than one http.config file and they are located in the following locations:
1) Macintosh HD/etc/apache2/httpd.conf.default
2) Macintosh HD/etc/apache2/httpd.conf.default.default
3) Macintosh HD/etc/apache2/original/httpd.conf
I edited this file (which one I have not got a clue) and also the php.ini file within Macintosh HD/etc/ using Terminal - the command I used was sudo cp php.ini.default php.ini
This php.ini file now exists in two locations now as well:
1) Macintosh HD/etc/php.ini
2) Macintosh HD/etc/php.ini.default
I then edited this file by changing the line of code below from:
514 error_reporting = E_ALL & ~E_NOTICE (I think it said E_DEPRECATED actually) but I am lifting this from the web page in the link above)
To:

I then saved this file.
I then deactivated web sharing in System Preferences and since then have not been able to restart Web Sharing. I click it and it flashes orange for a second then does not start.
This was all done to activate PHP on my iMac so I can host my own site which has a PHP contact form page.
Please help I am so out of my depth I am very worried I may have changed things and I am going to forget what I did.

Basically my problem is that when i click the start button for web sharing it says that web sharing is starting up, the button gets grayed out and thats it, it doesn't actually start.
I seem to remember a while back playing around with some software that installed something or edited something to do with the web sharing, so I'm guessing my apache install has got messed up.
So guys any idea's to fix it? Is there a simple re-install I can do of the apache or something?

I'm trying to start up the Personal Web Sharing on my Mac. I hit start and it gets stuck saying "Web Sharing is starting up..." I've tried everything I've found in the forums to try and fix it. Trying from the terminal doesn't work and there is no error log created when I try and start it up. Anyone have any other ideas on how to get it running on my computer? Thanks.

Yesterday i reinstalled the os x bundle cause of isyn was not working properly now isync is working fine but web sharing is not starting. i checked on web sharing from system preferences when i closed the window and comeback again to sharing i see web sharing everytime unchecked i did also locked but still unchecked. if i go to localhost/mysite its say: "Safari can’t open the page “http://localhost/” because it could not connect to the server “localhost”. please tell what i am doing wrong.
Thanks web sharing is working but if i type http://localhost/gmm/index.html it says"Not Found"
The requested URL /gmm/index.html was not found on this server.
but if i type http://localhost/index.html it shows apache page and says "This page is here because the site administrator has changed the configuration of this web server. Please contact the person responsible for maintaining this server with questions. The Apache Software Foundation, which wrote the web server software this site administrator is using, has nothing to do with maintaining this site and cannot help resolve configuration issues." but i can't see this page in the Sites folder. I didn't change any thing, don't know what to do.
