Web Video queries

Hi Guys,
It's been a while since I posted, so I just wanted to let you know that we have been making progress and slowly working through the issues we have had. I have to say that we could not have got this far without the invaluable information on this forum. We are extremely grateful here in the sandbox to all who have helped us thus far. :-). Incidentally, many of the problems we faced in the early days seemed to have been caused by a faulty CPU on our computer, which was running at some 70+ degrees!
Also, all of the following helped ensure a stable working environment for those perhaps experiencing the same issues we had: (not in order and all advice obtained from this forum!)
Reinstalled PrE
Updated to the latest version of PrE
Cleared out organiser and started over.
Obtained a new separate huge hard drive for Media only.
Upgraded to 4 GB RAM
Bought an Nvidea 9400 GT card then fell back the driver as per postings about the latest driver causing problems.
Followed postings about optimizing the PC (removing start up programs etc) from Bill and Steve et al.
Always set PrE to have High CPU priority.
Learnt how to create titles correctly using cut and paste within 'Project'.
Still don't understand how PrE renders titles and face the problem of having to re-render some titles everytime the project opens but hey ho..I'm happier than I was 2 months ago!
Use Digital Media convertor to get the right format for all files within a project.
OK. So we now have our small production ready to convert to flash for testing on our website. This process has raised the following questions which I hope can be answered here:-
We intend to use the 'Flowplayer' player as we have used this before and it seems quite easy to configure. In the past we have converted our 'non PrE projects' (Powepoint to flash for example) to .FLV format as this was the only option available to us with the application we were using. I see that PrE has 3 main options for web videos -  MPEG / AVI / FLV.
Should we stick to Flash video 8 700K? At the moment this gives a 15MB flash video for our current 3 minute PrE project.
The default for Flash Video seems to be NTSC. As our projects are all PAL format - will this cause problems or does FLV always use NTSC?
The 'Advanced' section shows some settings we are not familiar with:
Format: FLV or F4V?
Resize Video? Should this be the same settings as our intended Flash Video size within Flowplayer?Bitrate Settings?
Codec - Sorenson Spark or On2 or VP6?
Bitrate Settings - CBR or VBR?
Encoding passes - One or Two?
We've noticed that when converting to Flash, generally speaking the quality is good, apart from certain pieces of video where we have a Videomerge effect for example. This really pixelates and doesn't look too good at all. Is there anyway around this or is to do with the quality of the source footage?
We have a few 'flickers' on some Fade tranistions. Again - source footage? These flickers are actually in PrE so not related to the FLV conversion.
We have imported some LOGOs (png and jpg) images which don't look so good. We have noticed that if we build the logos again within PrE using TITLES, they look much better. This is very time consuming however.
I think that's it for now. Any help would as ever, be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Craig
Very hot Egypt.

Craig,
The ultimate creation tool for logos, is Adobe Illustrator, or another full-featured Vector design program. The use of Vector allows one to resize to one's heart's desire and NOT degrade the image in any way. Now, Video cannot use Vector art natively, so Rasterization MUST take place somewhere in the workflow. I strongly recommend that one does this Rasterization in an image editing program, that can Import the AI files from Illustrator, and do the Rasterization there. I output these to .PSD (because I use Photoshop), and Import those files. I also do any resizing in PS, prior to my Save_As PSD, though one can still do a tiny bit of Scaling, without adversely affecting the quality.
I like the PSD format, as it preserves Transparency, while JPEG does not, and GIF only allows 1-bit Transparency, either ON, or OFF, no Feathering, or partial Transparency. PNG will allow for more control of Transparency, but I already have everything I need in PSD to begin with and my NLE programs love PSD, so I just save a step and the compression.
If I am creating a Raster logo (pixels and not mathematically created Shapes), I will do this slightly oversized, and then Scale down a little for my final output - again to very close to the size used in the Video.
I have not used GIMP, but many sign its praises. I've always had PS, so I am never looking for an alternative.
Good luck,
Hunt

  • Problem with mac os x lion audio mute and web video playback

    I have a 15" MacBook Pro I7
Strangest thing started happening ever since I installed Adobe Masters Collection Trial Version CS6.
Randomly, and I can pinpoint exactly when, all of a sudden I will loose my sound.  The muting goes off and I can't get it back on again no matter what I try.  Then I loose web-video playback.  Nothing will playback beyond 11 seconds.  I followed all the support community advice on how to handle this situation with no luck.  Resetting the SCM does nothing.  The ONLY way I can fix it is with a re-install of Mac OS X Lion!  I've reinstalled twice (fixed the problem both times) but the problem just keeps coming back.
I'm guessing it's a software issue of somesort but I'm not exactly sure what the problem is or how to fix it.  Any advice?

Slight Update. I found a guy with my EXACT problem here.  https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4103108?start=0&tstart=0  Go to this discussion for further details.

  • Creative SB0410 digital out only works for dd/dts, not for stereo or web videos...

Creative SB0410 digital out only works for dd/dts, not for stereo or web videos...
    Hi all,
    Need some suggestions here.
I have an old Creative sb0410 7.1 channel card and after reading few long threads, I am able to output dd/dts via 3.5mm to rca connector.
However, the problem is I only hear sound if the video has dd or dts sound. When I play normal MP3 or youtube videos, there is no sound.
Is there a way to configure the digital out so it sends all sound to the receiver whether it's dd or dts or regular stereo?
    Thanks

As a workaround, I used another 3.5mm stereo to RCA adapter on stereo LR output of sound card and hooked to a different input in my receiver.
Problem, is I have to switch input in receiver for non DTS/DD sounds.
It's disappointing that my upscaling dvd player sends all sound signals via coax but this card does not.
Isn't it supposed to send all sound signals via coax regardless whether it is DTS/DD or normal stereo/mono etc?

  • Inoperable little white box obscures all web videos

What is the inoperable little white box that obscures all my web videos?
For example, upon searching for "Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 Nook”, and clicking on “360 degree [video] tour”, there appeared a maddening little white box with the following message: “Adobe Flash Player Settings. Local Storage. AppAsset.AppStudio.Kitd.com is requesting permission to store information on your computer. Requested up to: 10KB. Currently Used: 0 KB [Download [icon], “Allow” or “Deny”]” None of the three choices are active links and therefore do not work. The little white cannot be removed without terminating the desired video. Every time it comes up it almost completely obscures the video that I am interested in (on U-Tube or in the advertisement).
If this is an Adobe device, it needs to be fixed immediately because it does not work! Or, is it an internet bug which may damage my PC’s operations?
My PC is a HP Paviolion dv3-2150us Entertainment Notebook PC running Windows 7. The problem has been recurring for one week.

Sorry about that - I didn't know any better. First time on the Adobe forum. Later I did realize the error and posted it also on the Adobe Flash Player forum, hopefully the correct one. I don't know how or if I can remove this incorrect posting. If you have the privilege to remove it, please do so with my thanks. Or clue me in, and I will do it immediately.

  • Safari Not Loading Web Videos

For some reason, my Safari is not able to load various web videos from Yahoo Movies or the NYtimes.  I can see the ad, but when the video should load  I get a message that the video is currently unavailable.  If I open the video in Firefox the video plays fine.  I'm not sure what is wrong, but I'm wondering whether it's related to Adobe Flash or ClickToFlash.
On a somewhat unrelated note, I wasn't even sure whether I have Adobe Flash because it doesn't seem to be listed in the Applications folder.
Any advice would be most appreciated!
    HL
    My specs:
    -Safari v5.0.5
    -Adobe Flash v10.2.152.33
    -ClickToFlash v2.2.5

Check Safari / Preferences - Extensions. If you have any installed, turn that off, try a video.

  • What format/codec to post web videos?

At work they want to post videos we produce on our web site. They will range from a minute to an hour or more. We have heard pitches from companies that do all the work for us, all we have to do is upload the files and provide an interface on our web site. Viewers will not have to install player software, it will just "work" like YouTube.
But of course, the suits decided that was a bad idea, and we will be compressing the files ourselves and hosting it on some server space that comes in at the lowest bid. Our potential viewers will probably not be web savvy, and may be reluctant to download new player software or plugins. Few of our employees even know what the word codec means, and have begun happily compressing files using random settings, and not concerned about quality. (They are also not concerned that they are shooting stuff on HD cameras in 16:9 and using it in 4:3 projects, and people look really skinny).
My question is, what file format/codec to use? We are mostly editing on Final Cut Express or Final Cut Studio (with Compressor). Perhaps we should do it "Wild West" style, and let everybody compress their programs their own way, maybe different every time they do something? That way, the home computer user is bound to find at least one video that will play on their computer.
    Sigh!

FCE and FCpro are both editors, no converter tools.. allthough they allow to use the QT-engine to create a few codecs..
I would consider flv as a 'standard', by sheer market power of youtube.
but that is no codec in FCE's options .
my workflow, in 10.6. would be:
in FCE: Export QT movie (not QT compression!)
    open that file with QT_X
    choose upload to YT
use 'embbed'-code offered by YT on my site..
.. perhaps, that is too simple..
with FCE you have NO option, to generate a 'web video'; any export needs Quicktime on end-user's side.. FCE doesn't offer flash-video as option.. you need 3rd party apps for that, plus some skills to integrate into a webside, resp. set-up some 'video server' ..
Compressor allows flv as export. still, integration into 'web' unanswered ..
1h webvideo? phpheewww ... that asks for 'streaming video' ..

  • Screen colour temperature changes (bluer) when running web video, iDVD

An odd intermittent issue I noticed since upgrade from Lion to Mountain Lion.
Noticed on MacBook Pro 15" (high resolution), Early 2011 (MacBookPro8,2).
When I launch iDVD the screen turns brighter and a more blue-ish hue. It reverts when I close iDVD.
Issue is not isolatied to iDVD, for example it also occurs when running BBC Olympics web video content:

Anyone know the cause or have a workaround? Driving me crazy!

    gfxCardStatus by Cody Krieger: http://codykrieger.com/gfxCardStatus
Preventing the MacBook from dynamically switching from integrated (not blue) to discrete (blue) is not really suitable for me. What is posted in above links are only workarounds that limit the functionailty of my device. I want to use the features of my Mac as intended by Apple to preserve battery life. I want both display drivers to show the same colour.
PRAM reset never worked for me.
Booting Mac, logging in then off and on again is also a workaround -- I think mentioned here somewhere previously. This is a major pain though, as you can imagine.
Thanks for drawing my attention to display mode switching as being the potential cause however.

  • Importing web videos via HTML

    Would someone PLEASE help me!!!!
I can't seem to properly import my web videos to the right size inside iweb.
I copy the code for the player which size is 960x540, however it seems that iweb doesn't allow a video player that big.
after i publish the page, only part of the player is visible.
    what could be causing this?
i tried to resize the player from within iweb but it wouldn't let me.
    please advise....

I'm importing the code from EzS3 for my video player.
you can see it at: http://web.me.com/wkinzel/tester/Blank.html
notice that the second right end of the player is cut off. you can't see the maximize screen button.
i've tried this with multiple player codes, but the iweb HTML Snippet seems to not like the big player size. the smaller i can get 640x480 to work, but not 960x540.

  • Is it legal to showcase any app in my web video?

can I showcase any app icon in a web video that I'm making for my own app? what the app does is make it easier to find more great apps. just show the icon to reference the app, but in any way identifying myself with them, shining any bad light.
please help me not get sued!
    thanks!!!

thanks for the reply. it's just that one of the frames involves a screen full of apps. so it'd be long and intense to ask permission to so many. have to premiere the video soon.
might have to be the only way.

  • Canon GL2 or Sony HD camcorder for web video project

I'm about to start a web video project and need to make my year end purchases for tax purposes. The videos will be edited in Final Cut for use on the web - YouTube. They will be shot outside and range from 3-5 minutes edited. I'll want to shoot 16x9. What camera is best for this purpose and yield the best results. Workflow is also important as I want the process to be easy enough to facilitate the daily upload of new videos.
    Thanks

Shooting HDV isn't my favorite workflow... read the article about editing HDV in the current issue of the Creative COW magazine: http://magazine.creativecow.net/index.html
Shooting 16X9 DV would be faster to do IMHO...
That said, all compression is sort of a garbage in/garbage out situation. The better the picture, the better the end product, so it's a tough call in that price range... if you could jump up a bit to a P2 camera, things would be good all around workflow wise... but it's a bit of a jump... the HVX200 is selling for about $5200 or so... plus recording media... but it would more than compete with HDV (in fact it's much better looking to my old eyes) and it renders almost as fast as DV does...

  • Best transitions to use for web video

My client would like more transitions to 'smooth' some edits for a web video. The transitions should be pretty traditional (no checkerboard) but the main choices that look ok seem to be wipe and slide. Dissolves don't really look right.
Any ideas on this? Best ones to use? plug-ins? Thanks.

For anyone that has a similar issue to the one listed here, when editing an interview down to a 5-minute piece with no b-roll or stills, I found that using transitions like luminance map, and QT gradient wipe are some good options - for web viewing.

  • Best Practices Exporting for Web Video, Conversion Utilities

I'm new to non-linear editing and digital video in general, but extensive general video experience. I could use some guidance on the best formats/settings for exporting from Premier Pro for ultimate use in HTML 5 Web videos, and the most effective converers/setting for converting to WebM/MP4.
I've experimented with Miro, AVS4You, SmartFFMPEG, FFCoder, and Hewbo converters. All have there good and bad points; I still have issues with cross browser operation.
Who has some experience and viable options? I would prefer to us MP4 and WebM exclusively. . . .
    Thanks in advance. . .
    Mike

I've recently had to educate myself on this very subject for my own web site.  I ended up with XMedia Recode.  It's a free application that can create both MP4s and WebM versions.  It's taken in every kind of file I've thrown at it so far.  It offers a LOT of control parameters to tweak your image just right.  And it uses the superior x264 library.
