Web WMV files crash safari

I installed Flip4Mac on my computer.
Later, I upgraded to QT Pro.
Now, when I try to view web embedded WMV files in Safari, the program crashes.
Does anyone know why this might be happening?
I didn't like QT Pro so I don't need/want it. I tried throwing away QT and then downloading the basic version again. But it still crashes.
macbook pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

"there've been lots of restarts including after i re-installed QT last night."
But did you repair permissions? It's highly recommended that you do so after installations, upgradings and/or downloadings.
As for Safari crashing, it may be due to QT/Flip4Mac, then again it may not. I do not use Safari. Until a Safari knowledgeable user comes along, suggest that you cross-post that part of your issue in the Safari Forums where the Safari users hang out.
"how can i uninstall QT and Flip4Mac completely thus allowing me to reinstall everything fresh and hopefully get rid of this problem."
To uninstall Flip4Mac, go into your Applications Folder>Flip4Mac Folder.
Open up the Flip4Mac folder & double click the PDF User Guide file. Inside you will find detailed instructions on how to uninstall Flip4Mac.
I am not sure how to uninstall QT to be honest. You may wish to check out the following link *as a guide.*: Undo Quicktime 7
"I'm a relatively new Windows to Mac convert, so my understanding of "uninstalling" doesn't seem to jive with the way OS X works."
Usually, it is just a simple matter of just dragging the application to the trash & empty. However, you will run into a few applications that scatter things around your system & just dragging the app to the trash will not do.
You may need to use SpotLight to make sure you got everything or a 3rd party app to help you search like AppZapper.

  • On my Mac: embedded wmv files crash my web browser

Every now and then I'll click a video link to an embedded wmv file and watch either Firefox or Safari abruptly exit. There is no warning, or even an error report prompt. Any ideas as to what's going on?

    Do you have Flip4Mac installed?
I've had an issue in Safari, but not Firefox, whereby the browser freezes, and I have to force quit it.
I am not sure if this will help, but, if you do have F4M installed, it's worth considering. F4M has a utility application on the page HERE, and a Read Me about it HERE.
If you find that works, post back with your results. If you don't have F4M, get it and see if that solves your problem.

  • Svg file crashes Safari

I tried to view a svg file from wiki by clicking on it the normal way using Safari 4.0.2. Safari didn't just crash, it literally disappeared - no crash notice, no crashreporter entry - just an immediate poof.
I downloaded the file and tried to view it using Safari with same result.
    Fifrefox will view it ok.
Anyone experience this? Is there a fix?
I submitted a bug report to Apple

  • LiveCycle ES4 pdf file crashing Safari bowser in Ipad when opened in Apple IPAD 1 with IOS 5.1.1

When I am trying to open PDF file which is Encrypted with LiveCycle ES4, Safari Browser in Apple IPAD 1 with IOS 5.1.1.
Please Suggest me the way to open directly in Ipad.
    Adobe reader is Installed.

No, I have never jailbroken it, I did read something mentioning that being related to the issue, however, because I have never jailbroken it, it probably isn't related to me.

  • ALL PDF files crash Safari!

I can open PDFs sent thru email, and I can sync PDFs to the phone from iTunes and open them in iBooks... but, regardless of size or content, I cannot open a PDF in Safari.
When I click on a PDF link in Safari, the browser display refreshes and, for a split second, I see the PDF's first page displayed... and then immediately Safari crashes.
I've been seeing this around the internet, too, and I'm wondering when Apple will recognize this as a bug and issue a patch... anyone?

And we haven't even mentioned the worst part of this. It crashes the browser and then every attempt to reopen the browser results in that same PDF trying to load and immediately crashing the browser. There are only two options that I have found to get around this ridiculous problem:
    1) Immediately after launching Safari I touch the page count and attempt to close the loading page. This does not always work.
    2) Go into the Safari settings (very glad these are outside of the app) and Clear Cache. This immediately solves the problem because it clears all open pages in Safari. The problem is that it clears ALL OPEN PAGES in Safari which means that the pages you weren't having a problem with close as well.

  • Trying to play movies on Netflix and opening PDF files crash safari every time, what's causing this? I have enough memory.

for the last two weeks every time I try to play something on Netflix and/or open a PDF file it crashes my computer. I have enough memory. I know my MAC is older, Version 10.5.8 but I do all the regular updates. Why would this be happening?

  • Web inpector crashes Safari

Since I upgraded to 3.1.1, the web inspector keeps crashing Safari every time I try to look at the document DOM tree.
    Specifically:
    1) go to google.com (or wherever)
    2) cmd-option-I to open the web inspector
    3) under "DOCUMENTS" click "www.google.com".
    4) Safari is gone.
Possibly related: right-click on a page element and "Inspect Element" doesn't do anything.
Anybody know the problem and fix? Or barring that a way to go back to version 3.1.0?
    Thanks,
    Peter

    oops!
Sorry, looks like it was my fault. In some testing had I turned off javascript. Turning it back on everything works as expected.
Nevertheless, seems like a bug that trying to use web inspector with javascript off crashes the browser...

  • Streamclip launches with WMV files

So I have a new intel MBP and I'm waiting for an universal binary of Flip4mac WMV player. I have MPEG Streamclip downloaded for home DVD conversion to DV.
Anyway, whenever I click on a wmv file in Safari it downloads the file and Streamclip launches and gives an error message.
Now, it's annoying enough to have to trash these WMV downloads, but to have to quit streamclip everytime is driving me nuts.
Why is Streamclip even launching and is there some setting I can change to fix this? Will eventually downloading flip4mac solve the problem?
    Thanks

Don't click on a WMP file.
Use the browser status menu (bottom of the browser window) and hover your mouse over a suspected link. If your see a WMP file extension (.wma, .wmv, .asf and a few others) you don't click
Open one of these downloaded files and use the Get Info window to change the default open with app. Set it to none.

  • Downloaded wmv file appears as _html and cannot play in quicktime

I downloaded a wmv file via safari. After download it appeared as _html. I renamed it with .wmv file and tried to play the file. Quicktime launches and then message shows up "this is not a movie file". I also browsed through various discussion forums, downloaded FLIP4MAC but no luck. It is frustrating as this is the first time i encountered this issue. Is there any way i can play that movie file.

Find the URL for the WMV, paste it into Safari's address bar, and press the Option and Enter keys.

  • Can't Open WMV - linked files in Safari

I have a problem opening wmv content on webpages. I have windows media player installed on my Mac, however, when I go to a page with WMV content, it either a: does not open at all or b: crashes Safari. I haven't installed flip4mac or any other 3rd party software. Can someone help?

    Hello Oliver:
You might try downloading the latest flavor of Windows Media Player for the Mac:
    http://www.microsoft.com/mac/otherproducts/otherproducts.aspx?pid=windowsmedia
If you have it installed, I would delete it and the preference file (com.microsoft.mediaplayer.plist). In fact, I would trash the plist first, restart, and see if that corrects the problem.

  • Viewing Web Page With Embedded WMV Files

If a web page has embedded Windows Media Video files on it, will Safari on the Mac, whether version 4 or older .... display them ... including player controls.
    Thank you,
    Sarah

Thank you. Should have mentioned I was aware of this product.
Follow up question .... I assume therefore that neither Safari 3 nor Safari 4 will display embedded WMV files from a web page. Correct?

  • Every time I press the delete tab in Safari it either returns to my previous web page or crashes? Drivinh me nuts!

Every time I press the delete tab in Safari it either returns to my previous web page or crashes?

Launch the Console application by entering the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. If that doesn’t work, then in the Finder, press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
Look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash logs related to Safari, WebProcess, or PluginProcess. Select the most recent one of each and post the contents -- the text, please, not a screenshot. For privacy’s sake, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.)
