Webcam for ichat or Skype?

Hi, could anyone give me any advice on a good webcam to use with iChat or Skype?
Thanks, John

Hi
http://www.mac-compatible-web-cam.com/ can be a starting point.
With a Mac Pro that has USB 2.0 ports you can get any UVC (USB Video Class) camera as the Mac OS has included a Generic driver for these since OS 10.4.9 (Although it does not always give you all the options Vista might.
UVC tends also to be known as Vista Certified.
They include the X-Box 360 camera which gives quite a Good picture.
The Link I posted links to other site that sell the cameras.
Not all of those sell brand new cameras. (I spotted a Firewire Web Cam on sale from Amazon in the list)
A Firewire camcorder can function as a Web cam without the need for further drivers as well.

  • Best USB Webcam for iChat AV?

Okay, I know the macam and ichatusbcam site's have lists of cameras they recommend or claim work with iChat AV. The trouble is, I have one of those cameras, and it does NOT work with iChat.
I purchased the Labtec Webcam Pro, and while the video works fine, the audio is non-existent. The camera shows up as 'unknown usb device' in the audio section of the iChat prefs only occasionally, but even when selected does not work.
Rather than playing Russian Roulette with macam's and ecamm's lists, I'd love to hear from people that have had specifically good luck with a certain make/model camera, preferably on the more affordable side. The less tweaking and troubleshooting the better, as I've already driven my girlfriend nuts silenty yelling at her over our one-way chat (her iSight works flawlessly, of course).
    Thanks in advance!

I get the option to choose the mic that the camera is equipped with, however, the meter level indicator shows no activity to make me believe the camera mic is funtioning within iChat, iMovie, QuickTime etc... Sorry but the only thing I can say works for sure with this webcam is the camera function itself and using the built in iMac microphone.

  • Webcam for iChat AV 3

    Hi all,
My 5 year old standalone iSight die. I was very happy with it but since I have checked the prices and are way to expensive (from $175 up to $500+) i would like to get another webcam similar to the iSight.
Apple store has the *Logitech QuickCam Vision Pro* ($129.95) but other stores have the *Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000* for less (on sale $65.95).
Are they as good as the iSight? any suggestions?
    I have PowerPC G4 OS 10.4.11
Thank you for your help and time!

    Hi,
At this point you are somewhat stuck between two pillars.
Your Mac may not have USB 2.0
This limits you to USB 1.1 cameras.
These in turn need Mac Drivers and not all manufactures do Mac Drivers (Or they do not contain the same feature set as the Windows version.
There are two main suppliers of third Party Drivers.
You Will also Need the iUSBCam Utility
If you visit the Above link you will see they have a Camera guide top right.
This has a couple of tables of many cameras and which Drivers they need to use including Links to the Macam site and IOXperts (the third Party Drivers)
If you have a tower and have installed a USB 2.0 card then the OS since 10.4.9 has included what is called a USB Video Class (UVC) Compliant Driver.
This allows you to use any UVC compliant (Vista Certified) Camera (Although again not always with the same feature set)
Firewire cameras are technically still a possibility but tracking down a WebCam one is now virtually impossible. One previous Supplier (of iReZ Kritters) now do Medical cameras only.
Many USB 2.0 cameras are as good as the Firewire in some respects although the detail/Quality the Firewire cameras can produce is technically superior (It takes a very good eye to spot the difference though and possibly iMovie rather than iChat).

  • Recommendation for mid-price webcam for iChat

I believe I've got a USB2.0 Mac Mini running 10.4.11 and am looking for a reasonable webcam. I'm tempted by the Logitech Vision Pro, but at £64 or thereabouts, it's a little more than I'm hoping to pay. However, all the cheaper ones look to have very poor optics. Am I going to have to bite the bullet, or can anyone else recommend a cheaper UVC compliant alternative with autofocus and similarish quality?!
    Cheers

I have one of these as back-up a Xbox 360 Live Vision http://www.play.com/Games/Xbox360/4-/1720594/Official-Xbox-360-Live-Vision-Camer a/Product.html works well, manual focus and manual tilt.

  • Camcorder as WebCam for Rev B Imac g5?

    Hey everyone,
Does anyone know if I can use a Sony MiniDv camcorder (or something like it) to double as a webcam for Ichat video conferences? I don't wanna shell out 150 bucks for an Isight, and would much rather pay another 50 bucks to have a video camera/web cam.
Also if not, is there a cheaper webcam than the isight thats mac compatible.
    Thanks

Check Sony's website to find out if their MiniDv camcorder can double as a webcam. Better yet, they should have a toll free # for you to call.
If you don't want to shell out $150 for a mac compatible webcam then you will not have much choice in webcams. Suggest you do a Spotlight, Google and/or MacGoogle search for mac capatible webcams.
    This should get you started-->Webcams
    Good luck!

  • Webcam questions for iChat

As a PC guy who finally cracked and got a Mac Pro (sitting in a box next to me), I'm disappointed to read about all the issues regarding webcams and iChat. My display has no iSight, and I thought I'd simply order one (until Apple discontinued the external model). I spent the last few days poring over the discussion boards and shopping at every computer store in the county to find the best solution. Ralph's posts have been really helpful, but I was hoping for a simple solution (one of the reasons I got a Mac to begin with).
I don't like eBay, so I'm left to other options. All the Logitech literature/forum posts seem to indicate it can be recognized by iChat with the use of patches, but the boxes of the webcams indicate that functionality is compromised (no zoom, no enhanced video/audio, etc.) and no guarantee that it will work at all.
Has anyone tried the iMage cam (http://www.ecamm.com/mac/imagewebcam/) that claims to be a complete Mac product? At this point I'm just hoping that I can buy something out-of-the-box to put on my monitor and know that it works.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read through this, and for any help you might be able to give!

Another follow up to my problem. To see if any other hardware was causing interference, I disconnected all USB peripherals including the hub leaving only the XBox camera attached to the card. No change to picture quality. I disconnected my speakers (attached to audio line-out port). No change. The only other hardware left connected is my Netcomm 1300 Modem Router (ethernet connection), mouse and keyboard (on the USB 1.1 connections).
This seems to indicate a software problem. I only use Skype and iChat and I don't use them both at once! Interstingly, Skype actually is able to put up a recognisable picture (even though it gets banded with intermittant purple and yellow!) but iChat has only a black box with a very intermittant quick flash of the correct (or normal) picture but a constant smaller middle box of diagonal line hatching (poor description I know but words fail me here).
As for software I have tried shutting down everything else when either Skype or iChat are open to no noticable effect.
    Any help appreciated! Thanks

  • Webcam for skype, Cheap

    Hi,
I recently wanted to speak on skype using the webcam.
i went and bought logitech express plus, and it didn't recognize on skype but it did on ichat.
I returned it and brought a logitech 5000 and still doesn't work.
Which one can i have to work with skype (cheap), no built-in microphone needed.
    Thanks in advance

    You're welcome.
I see 5 webcams in addition to iSight in the linked pages:
two here, two others here, and one more here.
Logitec QuickCam® Chat is the cheapest at $29.95 USD.
    As explained on this page,
Most PC-compatible webcams should work with Skype, however some older models may not work. You should ensure that you always have the latest drivers for your hardware to ensure that the camera will work.
Try your webcam with some other apps. If your cam works with compatible from this list of Applications You Can Use With iSight, your problem may be your setup or system configuration rather than the webcam itself. In either case, you should be able to get help from one of the variety of sources at Skype Help.

  • IChat webcam for G3?

    Happy New Year all,
Just wondering if anyone uses their G3 iMac for iChat with a webcam? I was thinking of trying an iSight camera, but since Apple only build these into new Macs and Amazon advertise the old cameras at £600 a pop (!!! gold dust!!!) I haven't a clue what to do. Any other firewire cameras used or success with USB cameras on USB1.1???
As usual, many thanks in advance for any experiences shared…
    Simon

    Hello Simon
For Firewire alternatives to external iSight, take a look at Unibrain, iSweet, Fire-i, or others that claim compatibility with your version of Mac OS X and the apps you want to use with your webcam. Remember to check for microphone capability if you need that.

  • Skype plugin for iChat

Is there a Skype plugin available for iChat in Snow Leopard. I want to chat with my Skype buddies using iChat.

    Hi,
You would be better of asking MS/Skype.
Realistically iChat could do with a Jingle Library so that it could Video/Audio to Jabber apps - preferably one that would also allow contact with the PC standalone app called GoogleTalk and the Web Mail page page Browser Chat Plug-in that both use a form of Jingle that is not compatible with other Jabber apps.
It is said that Lion (OS 10.7) will bring iChat 6 and that will add Yahoo.
Whether that integration will include Video and Audio remains to be seen (People that may be testing it are also not allowed to Talk about it having signed a Non Disclosure Agreement).
Mostly likely it will be the same sort of integration Jabber has.
There seems to be very little "Out There" that offers integration on any front.

  • Skype webcam for tv

Would like to buy a webcam for my toshiba 55tl515uc ,it is skype enabled with 3d .skype recommends a freetalk conferance hd cam but they dont have any stock .would like to buy a cam that is sold at a chain store(easy to locate)can anyone recommend a brand that will work.

LG (cleverly) tells you that the TV is enabled for Skype but when you run the app, you will be given an error message directing you to buy a webcam (that LG manufactures, I guess!!) which will cost you another $100. I think LG should advertise that the APP is Skype ready IF AND ONE IF you purchase a particular webcam. Since they don't, they are not telling you the truth (in it's entirety).

  • Ichat or skype for voice lesson

My wife is a singing teacher in NYC and has a student in LA. She would like to be able to do a singing lesson with her student in LA. She has a new 2.4 GHz macbook and her student also has a Mac.
    1. Which would be better ichat or skype especially the audio and video quality?
    2. We also have a external iSight camera that we use on our G5 imac. Can we use this on the Macbook and override the internal isight? I am assuming the external one is better. Should she invest in a higher end web camera and if so any recommendations?
    3. As she needs to be able to clearly listen to her student, should she use a headset or external speakers?
This is all new to us and we are hoping others have investigated this and can offer some advice.
    Jerry

    Hi
    1. Mac to Mac use iChat, you will find with Skype you might get feedback.
    2. You can but i would use the internal cam as the pic is a bit better(depending on bandwith)
    3. Try and see what she prefers.
If you would like to test you can connect to me defcom1 .mac account.

  • Best webcam for a Mac Pro?

I'm not sure how much luck I will have, but here goes.
I have an old mid-2008 Mac Pro, I've been wanting to get a webcam for it for some time now, can anyone suggest one? — I doubt one of the cheap $20 webcams I can buy at the supermarket will even work with my Mac.
I've known Logitech to make Mac compatible webcams in the past, but I can't find any any locally.
Can anyone suggest something that's been tested to work with Mac? Thanks.

Thanks for the detailed response EZ Jim,
Yes, turns out after I posted this, I was reading through the Logitech Support pages, and found a similar answer in that no drivers should be required since Mac OS X has UVC drivers included as of 10.4.8 onward (great idea on Apple's part!) — with that information I decided to take a chance, and purchased a Logitech c270 for about $50AU.
So far I've tested it with a number of applications, I figured I'd try Photo Booth first, it works well.
I then tried to set up iChat with my iCloud account, couldn't seem to get that to work, so I called Apple Support, who helped me find the FaceTime app for Snow Leopard, got my iCloud account connected and was able to make a successful call to a family member. (I found the picture quality very nice for a small 720p camera.)
I also figured that since the webcam has a microphone built in, I'd also try using it for audio recording, it worked, which is handy meaning I won't have to connect an external microphone through the line-in.
I've still got a few uses I want to test it with such as Yahoo Messenger and Skype, but I'm confident that given my success so far it will work just fine. :)

  • Webcams for a Mac Pro?

I'm looking at getting a decent webcam for use with iChat and Skype so I can see my girlfriend in the States! The one that caught my eye was Logitech's UltraVision (http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/details/US/EN,CRID=2204,CONTENTID=118 04) but was wondering if anyone knew if this would work with an intel Mac Pro? It says it only works with Vista, but some resellers are saying it is Mac-intel compatible...
    Many thanks,
    Ben

    +heck no!+
OK… it was just a question as many of us also have Boot Camp/Parallels. I wasn't offering your rabies on a stick or anything… then again, maybe I was.
So, the best option is to get your hands on a pre-loved iSight. I'm surprised there are more of them. As people upgrade their Macs sure there are iSights that are up from grabs. I got 2 more of them from my parents when they went with Intel iMacs from their G4 versions.

  • Yoga 2 Pro: Webcam not working with Skype?

Hi all, weird problem. For some reason skype cannot load the webcam built into the Yoga 2 Pro.
It works in the Windows 8 camera app just fine.
I formatted and everything and it will just not work.
IT WAS WORKING two days ago, that's why I'm so confused.  I've installed the drivers on the support page and have had 0 luck.
I'm not sure if this is a permission thing or what..
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately I've reinstalled the driver after uninstalling it from the device manager 10 times. I also formatted and reinstalled, but that didn't fix anything.
The camera works for the camera app + the webcam test online. I've tried rollback on the drivers, and installing earlier versions of skype with no luck.
Very strange, all it does is show the loading sign, and never loads.
This is the desktop version of skype btw. I'm going to try it with the non-dekstop version tonight and see if it works.
EDIT: Is there any other camera source besides 'Lenovo EasyCamera'? Their are two drivers on the drivers page, which one is recommended?

  • Need a webcam for PowerBook G4 running Mac OS 10.4.11 -- help!!!

Hi - i am looking for a webcam for my PowerBook G4 running Mac OS 10.4.11. No Apple service center or other computer store in India has any idea of what camera could work. Logitech sells the QuickCam Vision Pro for Mac, but that is too expensive for me. The ones I liked (from Logitech) are the Webcam C200/C250M/C500/C600 and the QuickCam for Notebooks - though I don't know if any of these is compatible with my G4.
Any suggestions? I'm open to suppliers other than Logitech, as long as it does not cost more than $60.
Please help me ASAP - thanks in advance
