Webcam indicator LED defect on MSI GT70 ONC-027NL ?

Hi there!
I recently bought the laptop mentioned in the subject.
The webcam itself is working just fine. However the indicator LED seems to be broken.
According to the manual there's an indicator LED when the webcam is in use.
I can't get it to work. Like I said the webcam is working fine.
I tried booting Linux, but same deal. Webcam works, no indicator LED.
Seems like a broken LED or the manual is wrong and there's no webcam indicator LED.
The integrated webcam is detected as a Bisoncam NB Pro.
There's no updated driver for it other than the built-in driver for Windows 7 64 bits.
Furthermore I found no evidence online that the LED can be controlled by software.
In my experience integrated webcams on notebooks come with an indicator LED.
I tried the camsoft that came with it and other video capture applications. Tried Cheese for Linux too, still no go.
I hope any of you GT70 owners can tell me if their LED is working or if there simply is no indicator LED.
I prefer a webcam with indicator LED to know it's in use or not.
Thank you

The LED is probably just broken then, if the webcam works otherwise.
If its really a big issue for you, return the notebook for replacement.
This model doesn't have a webcam indicator other than briefly indicating on/off on the screen when using the FN-F6 key combination. I contacted my supplier and after close inspection in the manual I also saw a small hole were the LED is supposed to be. This model doesn't have one, so all is fine thanks!

  • MSI GT70 ONC support please

My GT70 ONC with Windows 7 has several issues that I am asking for help with.
    1. The MSI Live Update 6.1 downloads updates but the installer fails to install them.
    2. The Turbo button stopped working months ago. I tried several solutions to no avail. I miss it.
    3. KLM stopped working long ago. I followed the steps and links in the FAQ to no avail: ( sorry I'm not allowed to post external links I guess).
    4. S-Bar stopped working. I followed the steps in an old FAQ here but the downloads for the ONC are not available. I searched for drivers on external websites but I'm hesitant to register and give them my email as I'm not sure if they're trustworthy.
    5. Would any of the other GT70 drivers on the download support page work for the ONC (i.e. GT70 2OC)?
Has the rapid increase in gaming requirements left me in the dust?  Am I correct that my GTX 670M does not have enough memory to play many newer games (not enough ram)?
I use the Intel Driver Update Utility and the GE Force Experience to attempt to keep my drivers up to date - can't seem to update the RealTek HD Audio with the MSI tool as well.
Many thanks in advance as I'm obviously not an IT person just and old guy that struggles quite a bit and Googles a lot.

Firstly, MSI Live update doesn't support MSI notebook, so don't use it to install drivers or you'll have many unexpected problems.
Try to re-install the OS and install the drivers from MSI website and then check the problem again.
Here is the driver download page for your model:
    Win7 64bits: http://www.msi.com/support/nb/GT70_0NC.html#down-driver&Win7 64
*Don't use any third-party programs to update your drivers, you may have some unknown issues by using them.
(I've met many users on the forum suffering issues because of using the wrong way of updating drivers.)
About the graphics driver, the latest generic driver from NVIDIA isn't always better, sometimes the latest driver has some issues which the older one runs more stable. In my opinion, as long as the system is running stable, I won't be  encouraging an update of the latest generic driver.
Lastly, sometimes people meet some issues caused by GFE and due to the reason that it's harder to diagnose, so they prefer not having it installed and choose to manually update driver from the MSI website or NVIDIA website.

  • MSI GT70 ONC-008US - Won't boot properly

For whatever reason, my laptop refuses to boot properly now. For awhile it just had a problem booting from sleep (no image on screen, seemingly working otherwise), so I avoided doing that. It also did this when trying to power on the laptop, but this problem was fixed ignored by simply holding the button and trying again.
It now it wont boot, despite the number of times I might try to make it. Nothing appears on the screen at all, sometimes my keyboard back-lights come on but now not even that happens. I don't know what to do. The hard drive (I think it's the hard drive?) makes a sort of clanking sounds a couple times and then goes quiet, occasionally making small beaps. USB devices power up per usual.
If you know what might be happening I'd be eternally grateful. My only guess is that the hard drive is failing, but wouldn't the screen still show something if it was simply the hard drive failing?
##UPDATE:## After trying a million times it finally booted. I still want to figure out what is going on. Please help

I've contacted at least three computer repair shops in my local area and all seem to think it's the motherboard. FML
It sucks. But it should still be under warranty from MSI. I would contact them to be perfectly honest.

  • MSi GT70 - 0NE-276us Sudden Power Off/Will not Stay On

First and foremost, thank you for taking the time to read about my problem. No sob story, however this is my only computer and it was/is my work machine in the IT Administrative/Deskside Workplace. Any ideas are welcome.
I have an MSi GT70-0NE 276us Laptop. I bought it last year (Christmas). I was playing a game on Steam when suddenly the machine turned off. Using my troubleshooting experience, here is what I tried:
-Removing the battery and power supply from the machine and holding power button for 1 minute
-After testing with ONLY the battery inside the machine, pressing the power button makes a white flash and a shimmer of light sent to the keyboard, but doesnt actually turn on. It does this upon each keypress and does not skip a beat.
    - I tried to connect the power supply directly into the laptop WITHOUT the battery connected, and it does the same thing. As for the battery indicator light, it does not stay on as it normally would when the power is connected to it.
NOTE: I have NEVER used my laptop WITHOUT the power cord connected; it is always attached since I know its a power hog.
    - I have checked for any smells of burning/melting and there are none. The laptop was also not that hot when it cut off suddenly.
    - Ive blown the mainboard/underside with compressed air and removed all of the dust
    - Ive made sure the fan was clear and connected
    - Ive reseated the RAM
    - I have NOT tried another power brick; the one I received was refurbished.
    - The LED on the power brick lights up but nothing is coming into the machine
    - I have not had the laptop 10 months and its always connected to the wall/power outlet
So if it is the motherboard, I wouldnt be too surprised but Ive know MSi to make excellent motherboards, hence the reason I spent 2500.00 on it. A fellow IT friend said I may want to try a new power supply that has the exact specs your laptop needs. As if its possible the load on the end of the power brick that goes into my laptop may be done for.
I removed the Battery and noticed this:
The inside of the laptop after removing the battery say
    MS 1762
    DC Rating 19V=9.5A
    My Battery says (MSi battery)
    11.1 Vdc = 7800mAh, 87 Wh
    ..But the power brick reads
    Input 100-240 V ~2A 50-60Hz
    Output 19.5 Volts =7.7 A
He suggested trying a new power suppy but Im concerned its the motherboard (because us IT Guys know the motherboard will get you everytime)
So is it possible? Im not sure why they may have given me the wrong power brick, if it is wrong. He says the specs dont add up, and since each time I press the button and the white light flickers and part of the keyboard, he said it may be the power bricks' node that connects to my machine. Im used to motherboards that are done for the machine shows no sighns, no hints, no flickers. This is atleast flickering, just not coming on .
I know its alot to read and I appreciate all of the techs/other users time.

Thanks guys. Your input is not falling on deaf ears and it seems im getting reputable support via the forums with the MSi tech team.
It really is so weird. Today I tried the process of elimination from a video I saw on you tube. Now, keep in mind, each time the power button is pressed with either their power brick/battery alone in the machine, the power light and the 'battery' indicator light at the front of the machine flicker (each keypress; even if you do it rapidly).
I took the bottom tray off and checked the fan and blew it out with compressed air. Checked the thermal paste under the processor heatsink, checked the processor condition and all looks well there.
Tested by removing one connection at a time then testing for power (all along while testing, keep in mind I only have the 19.5v 7.7 amp power brick.)
    - removed D:/ drive secondary  then checked for continuity; no luck
    - removed all 4 ram sticks and tested one at a time with the power supply connected; no continuity
    - removed the keyboard ribbon cable and tested; still no luck
    - removed (what I believe to be) the usb ribbon cable (hub with 3.0 ports) and tested for any indicator lights; still no luck
    - unplugged the cmos for 5 mins and reconnected; still no luck
*NOTE: when I look underneath of the laptop when pressing the power button, the fan that has the gpu and the cpu heatsinks up against, it actually spins for a brief second; about as long as the power button flashes.
I stopped at some stores looking for a 180+ watt adapter and i couldnt find one that carried it. I wanted to test it before purchasing, so Ive avoided online purchase up to this point. However, I do realize I need one anyway at this point regardless.
My buddy has his own PC Repair shop. He doesnt have a power brick of that magnitude, but cant we get a voltmeter and check for continuity from not only the power supply, but also the jack soldered on the motherboard?
He is saying kinda what Dark is saying... Me, I think its a short somewhere... he thinks the computer asked for too much power from the power supply and probably burnt out the tip because at the time it cut off, I was playing a graphic intensive game, and in my USB 3.0 ports on a single hub, I had the following connected:
    - A Logitech USB headset (wired)
    - an XBOX 360 wired controller
    - A Logitech G700 gaming mouse charging
Ive never had that many power hungry devices connected to one hub at one time before.

  • New MSI GT70 - 890

Hey guys, I just bought a MSI GT Series GT70 DominatorPro-890. I had Asus G750 JavaScript and then JZ model before this, but bad thermal throttling led me to msi.
So, is the the forum for this notebook? The asus had an actual asus forum, for specific laptops, in which you could make threads and ask questions and all that. But is this the forum for the msi, or is there another website for that?
Also, my asus came with backtracker, which put windows and recovery all onto a usb for me, in which I could do fresh installs of windows with all drivers onto any harddrive in my laptop through the usb. Does the msi have a program like this?
Also, I've seen a few posts on here about downloading a fan control software thing, is that something that should be done?
I'm new to msi, old to laptops and pc's. I knew my asus like back of hand, and built several gaming and workstation pc's in the last year so I am fully knowledgable on both components and processes.
I'm going to be using this laptop for some gaming, but maily sony vegas 12, cyberlink powerdirector 12, maya, solidworks, autocad, and adobe cs suite.
Are there any first things to be done when getting my laptop? Other than the normal clean up bloatware type stuff?
I plan to change out hhd for 2x 1tb Samsung evo ssd's, and add in my 4x 8gb ddr3l 1866 ram. I have those from previous asus. Should I also change out the wireless card? Does it have miracast/widi?
Anything to help out much appreciated!

Quote from: dblkk on 30-June-14, 07:03:36
Thanks for the help, and quick.
Quick question, does anyone know if the stock fan profile is a good combination of heat/fan speed? And/or where I would go to get fan control software?
As for "msi burn recover", is this something I can run to a usb, then swap out the stock drive with my 1tb ssd and install fresh windows off of? Or do I need to clone the drive and use the msi software just for a recovery. Does it also include msi drivers? or would I also need to go to msi.com and download those and save those to usb as well?
Would anyone know what size the wireless card is? Is it a full size, half, micro?
Does anyone know if the ram capabilities go to 1866mhz? or is it just 1600? And if it is 1600, could I use my 1866 and just have it defaulted to 1600 and loose the extra performance? I have 4xcorsair vengeance 8gb 1866 ram from my asus.
Last question, which thermal paste do you prefer/would work the best. I plan on doing as soon as I open it up to replace stock ram, hhd, and wireless card.
I don't have the link for the fan control software. Personally, I just live with how loud the fan is at max speed. I'd rather have good cooling for better performance and live with the noise, than have it throttle due to heat.
The MSI Burn Recovery program should provide an option to make a recovery disk using USB I believe. I haven't done it in a while and I'm not sure it was supported on my old GT70, but I know on the newer ones it is now supported as other users have done it.
I would personally use the MSI Burn Recovery disks to install Windows onto the new drive. I would remove ALL drives except for the drive you wish to install onto. This way it doesn't confuse it and install onto the incorrect drive. Once you have windows installed and everything setup, add in the other drives you want.
I don't know what size the wireless card is offhand, but I believe it is half size.
I don't believe the laptop supports 1866 inherently, but it SHOULD support running it at 1600 without issue.
Personally, I would use any silver based thermal compound. While some premium brands will give you 1 or 2 degrees C better performance, they might cost twice as much. Or more. I used the cheap Dynex brand from Best Buy because it was quick and easy and I didn't need to wait (actually, I had some on hand...but anyway....). It works wonderfully for me.
