Webcam Quality

Hi Everyone! I am on a ThinkPad T430 which I purchased in August of last year. I have recently upgraded it to Win 8 and have had no troubles except recently. For some reason the webcam seems to have degraded in quality quite significantly. In fact everything was almost completely black until I upped the brightness and now everything is washed out. I tried re-installing the drivers for the webcam (I removed it first from Device Manager) but that stopped the webcam working all together. I just uninstalled the drivers in add and remove programs and now I am back to the washed out image. Any ideas?
Thanks!

Hi abagshaw,
Has the entire system been updated or just the camera drivers?
Have you tried it in compatibility mode?

Inbuilt webcam quality is poor (a350)
Is this normal for this computer?
Is even worse and switches to black screen only bright light shown at night on Skype.

    Hi
The image quality could not be the best because of the dark room where you are using the webcam.
You should increase the brightness in the room and should set the webcam settings to night mode!

  • Webcam quality problems

    Hi.
I bought MSI GE70 2PC-067 today and everything is good... except webcam. It has really bad quality. How can I fix it? Where could be problem? Even my old notebook has better.
    Here is photo.
    Thank you for any help!

Well, camera what's with win8, if you mean that. But also with skype it's bad like that... and I don't have any special program for webcam. But I think it is weird, because the photos are so small and bad, as you can see. And it's not environment. It's everywhere. I don't really need external webcam, i'm just kinda disappointed... it's supposed to be 2mpx but, you know.
I also tried update driver, but they seems to be okay.

  • Just got a new MBP w/ Retina Display and the webcam quality is horrid, help?

As the title says, I just bought my new macbook pro 15inch with retina display. Started to skype with a friend and noticed the quality of the webcam is HORRIBLE, even on photobooth. My 2010 MBP has way better quality than this, is this just a problem with the retina display ones or do all MBP now come with crappy quality webcams?

If it is not to your liking you have 14 days from date of purchase to return it for a full refund.

  • Pavilion dv7-6c54ea Webcam quality

Having used the webcam for the first time for  a video call I cant help but feel that HP could have done something better. Ok its suppose to be HD but it when its on an online video call you notice its running only as 15 FPS and so is very jiggery.  Can something be done about this to get at least 30FPS on a call?  Whats the best drivers to install.. Is there anything that can be done to enhance the picture that I am sending?  Although this is a new lappy the webcam isstraight out of the 1990's.. Any help would be appreciated.
    This question was solved.

    Update AND a FIX..
Ok.. after many days of trial and tribulations I have found the fix AND I have to apologise to HP as I do not think it is a driver  issue lol (yeh I know.. )
Ok so I got Youcam opened and started messing about with the settings.  Lo and behold I got it working perfect by unticking "Exposure" in the advanaced properties for the camera.
But there is something else I found out.  What I have told you above is in "ATI Graphics card" mode.
Get this.  If you put it in "Intel CPu/GPU" mode (therefore not using the ATI card inside) you can run youcam with all the setting all the way up WITH exposure on and it works perfect.  You even get told about the quicksync on the cpu in the process.
So I can only imagine that this driver has been streamline MAINLY for the CPUGPU mode and not the GPU inside.
So there we have it. For people who have had a problem give it a go.  You will be pleasantly surprised.

  • Webcam quality issue

I have a HP G56 108SA, its got a 1.2MP webcam built in but its showing horidly, i have Youcam 4 installed but its highest resolution setting is 640x480 and not giving me the 1.2/1.3mp option.
Anyone able to help with this?

This is 0.3 mega pixel webcam that is configured on all value line systems.this is why paid lower money.
you should not expect higher than this configuration cause this is a value line in a business way and this is not made for day to day chatting.

  • HT1338 macbook pro retina webcam poor quality

I am very happy with my MacBook Pro Retina Display.
However, the webcan produces very poor image quality, feels like out of focus. (using facetime, imessage, skype, all software the same)
I went back to my Macbook pro 2011 version, the same 720p webcam, produces very clear picture.
I read quite a few people having this issues but looks no firm answer. I hope its a software issue.
I wonder if Apple is looking into this problem.
    Thanks

Yes, I have recently noticed the exact same issue.  RMBP has very poor webcam quality and is certainly not 720p (HD) display.
I have compared it to my desktop webcam, a logitech (HD720p camera) and images were by far much more superior for my logitech webcam.
I hope they do a software fix on the cameras.

  • Satellite C50t-A052 - webcam low quality

i bought Toshiba Satellite C50t-A052 and can't adjust the webcam quality ?
I wonder how toshiba didn't support Win 8 64bit driver until now.
However Toshiba install that OS on my laptob

    Hi
The notebook was equipped with an 0.9MP HD Web Camera (1,280 x 720) with built-in microphone. You should not expect too much from an 0.9 mega pixel webcam.
Regarding the Win 8 drivers: On Toshiba EU driver page you can find all Win 8 as well as Win 8.1 driver for the Satellite C50T-A series

  • IChat Video Conference Quality?

    Hello,
I am thinking about purchasing a Macbook and using it for one-on-one video conferencing, but would like to know if the webcam video quality is really as good as it is in the store demo. That is, when you video conference with others (Mac and PC), is the video you receive sharp, or is it blocky (more like big pixels) and response slow even with a cable modem? I am asking because we also have a new Sony Vaio and the webcam quality is pretty poor with video conferencing using AIM, Sightspeed, and Windows Live Messenger. While at the Apple store the salesperson was not able to connect to anyone outside of the store, so I was not able to gauge the quality. Also, are you able to make the video window larger? (it seems so small)
    Thanks for any feedback…
      Windows XP Pro

The primary determinant of iChat video conferencing quality is the upstream Internet connection speed on both ends of the call.
But for a given connection speed such as yours (whatever it is), I'd say that Mac to Mac iChat video conferencing would be clearly better than PC video conferencing on AIM, SightSpeed, or Windows Live Messenger. It's not going to be as good as what you saw in the Apple Store unless you have an upstream connection speed of 1500 Kbps or greater.
I have both Macs and PCs, but I always choose to use iChat Mac to Mac video conferencing whenever possible. As a Mac alternative to iChat, I prefer Skype for Mac with video and recommend it for Mac users who need to video-connect with PC users.
Both iChat and Skype offer up to full-screen video.

  • X220 webcam camera is poor!

I wasn't expecting stellar image quality from the integrated webcam camera on the ThinkPad X220, but I was expecting at least decent image quality, on par with other notebook computers, and I find the image quality to be very disappointing, best described as poor. Reviewers have also seen and commented on poor image quality (e.g., Lenovo ThinkPad X220 reviewed – adored for a bunch of reasons), so I assume this is due to poor hardware and/or software, not just a defect in my particular machine. Has anyone found any way to improve the image quality? Thanks.
    Hope that helps,
    John

I just noticed that there was some serious residue on my webcam camera lens (probably came that way from the factory), and after thoroughly cleaning it off with pre-moistened lens wipes, my image quality is now much improved, to the point that I now consider it decent, so try cleaning your webcam camera lens.
    Hope that helps,

  • Yoga 2 Pro Camera Pixelated? - Windows 8.1

    Hey Everyone,
I just received my Yoga 2 last week, and I opened up the camera app and the image was very pixilated.  Has anyone else experienced this?  I am not picky about my webcam quality, but I would expect it to look similar to my camera phone in quality...
Any thoughts would be much appreciated.  Thanks!

Hate to break it to ya, but the Yoga 2 Pro just has a crappy camera. Manufacturers always look for ways to cut corners and the webcam is a common victim.
It has a crappy generic 720p camera (less than 1 megapixel). You've been spoiled by Apple. By contrast, the iPhone 5s has an 8 megapixel camera with a good sensor, a fast aperture, and a good lens. It's usually considered the best mobile camera out there (most Android phones have pretty bad cameras too). The Yoga's camera is nowhere in the same league... not even remotely close.

  • My Qosmio X775 3D doesn't record video or just fails at it

    Hello,
I have a Qosmio x775 with stereo webcams, but when I try to record 3D video it just stutters goes full screen and shows highly distorted 2 screens of video, and records side by side video... which when I use the Toshiba 3D player it just shows it side by side, no matter what configuration i give it.
When recording it's highly distorted using 2 squares (like 10% of the screen space) on the upper right corner and full screen. Also when trying to upconvert video to 3D it just shows a mess.

    Hi
Im wondering if you have calibrated the 3D vision before trying to use the 3D future on this notebook?
The Toshiba 3D webcam supports Support 2D mode, Shutter Glasses 3D mode and Red-Cyan Glasses 3D mode.
So ensure you have configured this properly.
Furthermore dont forget to remove the foil placed at the front of the webcam. This affect the webcam quality.

  • ThinkPad T450s Review

    Introduction
The ThinkPad T450s is one of the best new ultrabooks. While it's not as thin as some, it's still quite compact, and much easier to service than thinner machines, and the Full HD IPS screen is a standout feature.
This review is based on a production ThinkPad T450s, Machine Type 20BX, Product ID 20BXCTO1WW.
    Intel Core i7-5600U Processor
    Windows 8.1 Pro 64
    14.0" FHD (1920 x 1080)
    720p HD Camera
    Intel HD Graphics 5500
    4 GB DDR3L - SDRAM 1600MHz Base
    Fingerprint Reader
    500GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpm, 2.5"
    ThinkPad Battery 3 cell Li-Polymer (23.2Whr) Front
    ThinkPad Battery 3 cell Li-Polymer (23.2Whr) Rear
Country Pack 45W AC adapter United States (2pin)
Intel 7265 AC/B/G/N Dual Band Wireless + Bluetooth Version 4.0
    After receipt:
4 GB Samsung SO-DIMM was installed
Hard disk was replaced with 1 TB Samsung 850 EVO SSD.
    Construction
Quality of T450s construction is not up to old ThinkPad standards, with some obvious cheapening, but is still pretty good. Annoyances include the difficulty of prying off the bottom cover (after removing 8 screws) to get to the inside, and fingerprint-revealing textured plastic instead of the old rubberized finish. But it's quite solid, no flexing, and quite compact.
    Connectivity
Port layout is reasonably good on both sides with nothing on the back. All USB ports are 3.0 with excellent performance. But Mini DisplayPort means you may have to buy and carry an easy-to-lose dongle. Wi-Fi performance (Intel 802.11ac 2x2) seems better than earlier generation 802.11n Intel cards, even those with 3x3. Bluetooth connections are fast. Speakers are decent but nothing to write home about. Webcam quality is improved over earlier generations, but still struggles in low light. Fingerprint reader is a big improvement. (Thank you, Apple.)
    Performance
The good news is that the i7 T450s finally proves to be a bit faster than the Sandy Bridge i7 (T420s) on processor intensive tasks like video encoding, despite an ultra low voltage processor running a little slower. The machine is cool and silent most of the time, with only a soft blowing of air under heavy load.
    Memory
4 GB of memory is soldered to the main board and there's only one SO-DIMM slot. While you can add an 8 GB SO-DIMM for 12 GB total, that would mean half the memory would work in single channel mode, which can have a pretty big impact on performance (as much as 20-30%) especially since the integrated graphics adapter uses part of main memory (reducing available memory). So if you care about performance you'll have to stick with 8 GB, which can be marginal for things like Ultra HD video editing. (The performance impact, of course, also applies to machines with only the base 4 GB memory. The promised NVIDIA 940M graphics option is not yet available.)
    Screen
The 1920x1080 IPS screen may take some getting used to, but really is a good deal better than TN screens, and is pretty close to proper calibration out of the box. (Be sure to burn in the screen for at least 24 hours before making any judgements.)
    Keyboard
The island keyboard is pretty good for what it is, but the layout still suffers as compared to the classic ThinkPad keyboard. Layout of Home End Insert Delete and PrtSc are poor, and other keys like Pause/Break are missing entirely, now only available as Fn key combinations (like Fn+B for Break) that are not marked on the keys. Also annoying is the lack of hardware status lights (hard disk, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, charging). You can rely on the Windows Task Bar for wireless and charging, but you'll need to install something like DiskLED (which works well) for disk activity. Keyboard backlight is usable (despite some annoying light bleed from the top row), but not as good as the classic ThinkLight.
    Power
With just the standard 2nd battery, not the extended battery with big bulge on the bottom, the T450s can still be used on and off through an entire day without running out of battery power. The supplied power adapter is pretty small, but only 45W, so can't fast charge when the system is under load. If you care about fast charging you should get the optional Slim 65W Adapter.
    Summary
A mostly welcome return to ThinkPad form, with a very good IPS screen, and finally enough ultra low voltage processor power to measure up to Sandy Bridge.
    Hope that helps,
    John

    yes on the price.
[1] On the performance I'd love to see a test. Many people will put 8GB modules into the system and have the same issue with single channel mode. [2] But on the other hand "not having enough memory" can slow down a system a lot more, because it would swap a lot of the RAM to the drive. Having 20GB of RAM (4GB soldered plus 16GB as module) might result in a lot better performance than having just 4+4=8GB total.
    1. See RAM Performance Benchmark: Single-Channel vs. Dual-Channel - Does It Matter?
    2. You can avoid paging (not swapping) overhead by limiting Virtual Memory, either by turning it off entirely, or by setting a small range of 512-1024. (I use the latter approach.)
    Hope that helps,
    John
