  • How do I select a USB hub?

The USB ports on my studio display went out yesterday during a series of power outages. Is the fix as simple as expanding one of the ports on the tower with a hub from Staples or ebay? Will the hub need external power? Are there any hubs out there that are known to work well with the G4?

Sometimes a PRAM zap or a restart will "fix" a USB problem. Also look at the following link.

USB hubs should be universal, i.e., any brand will work. But get a powered one.

seems we could either buy a router or another printer....
    any other suggestions?
Do the same thing your doing to get each computer on the Internet, one takes turns connecting the cable.
If you want both computers on the Internet and printing at the same time, that's what a router is for.
Just sub one of the PC's above for a printer and you see the idea how it all works.
A Airport Express is Mac friendly method, but if you have computers that have no wireless capability then you will need a Airport Extreme for the Ethernet outports.
You can also buy a third party router from the PC store, that works too, but it's a bit more complicated and you have to install your own firmware updates manually, no Airport Utility to do it for you. But you save money.
The important thing is setting up the router securely, WPA and WEP are both cracked. New Mac's don't even support WEP encrypted because it's worthless and false security.
    What you want is:
WPA(AES) Personal with two passwords, each 20+ random letter, number, symbol characters in length. One password is used for Internet access only the other for Admin router access only, this way a user can't crack the router.
Turn off remote access, don't use hidden network or MAC Address filtering, no defense.
The long passwords are needed to defeat brute force attacks using video card based software, this type of password will take thousands of years to crack.
You can learn more about wireless networking online, have a local PC/Mac guy set you up.
Your computers are much more secure behind a router than directly connected to Internet as the router is a dumb switch, like a large security guard, only allowing certain things to pass and beating down others who try.
Also you don't wear out your Ethernet port like what your doing now connecting the cable all the time.
    Good Luck

  • USB hub kills laptop

I have a Belkin 4-port USB hub that I plug my external harddrive, ipod, and printer into, which I then connect to my powerbook, all via USB. But, whenever I leave the hub plugged into my laptop and then shut my computer's monitor, putting it to sleep, later, when I open it, it won't wake up. The screen stays black and, though the computer IS on, the monitor won't light up and the only way I can fix this is by rebooting the computer.
I've ascertained that the USB hub has to be the issue because this problem never occurs when I eject all the devices and unplug the hub. Though I know the powerbook has problems with hubs that mix USB 2.0 and 1.1 - that's buried deep in the manual - I have made sure to have only 2.0 devices plugged into the hub, so I know that isn't the issue.
The hub was bought new, as was everything connected to it, so I really doubt that the issue is defective hardware on that end. I would assume that Apple makes their computers so they actually work when USB devices are plugged into them and left there - I use my laptop as my home computer, so it's often in this state - so what's the deal? Apple won't help because it's a third party device that is triggering the problem. The USB hub is the one that Apple sells on their website, so I know it's supported! Any ideas?

Ian, I am not sure if this will help explain about USB connections or not.
USB connections are temperamental and can sometimes cause several different disruptions.
I will give you a few of the anomalies that I am sure USB connections to peripherals can cause. This includes just about any including Camera's Scanners, Printers, and External Zip Drives.
More often than not You need to have the devices plugged in before you start your computer before it can be recognized. This is not always true but it happens, so this is a contradiction, It can work either way but this is the reason they recommend not to disconnect a USB devise while your devise is plugged in. There seems to be a disruption in the connection and if you do unplug it and then plug it back in it will not remount unless you, re- boot, or restart your computer before it will work again and recognize the devise.
It appears that USB devices are normally good in there operation when plugged in directly to your computer, rather then a HUB.
After reading the different posts in these forums on the inconsistency, and from personal experience in there use.
It is know wonder that there is such poor performance in the use of USB Modems, and everyone recommends Ethernet or Firewire connections over USB.
USB is and can be functional, if you remember the simple rules to follow on connection and disconnection of the devises, and special care is taken.
Yes I know we as users feel that we should be able to just plug and play but this is not always the case.

  • IPad 2 iOS 5 Windows 7 USB hub issue solution

I thought I would post this message to help those running Windows 7 (or other versions of Windows) that might be having "USB Device Unrecognized" issues with their iPad when going to iOS 5.  In my case it is an iPad 2.
Long story short... When upgrading to iOS 5 using iTunes 10.5, if you are getting "USB Device Unrecognized" error messages or Windows has trouble installing the USB driver with your iPad (or maybe another iDevice) and that device is connected to a USB hub of some sort that may have worked previously under iOS 4.x or earlier, the solution for me was to connect the iPad to one of my PC's main USB ports (as in the ones directly connected to the motherboard). For whatever reason, Windows is not able to recognize my iPad 2 running the first release version of iOS 5 when it is connected to the USB ports on my Dell 2408 LCD panel's hub. Even though this was never an issue with iOS 4.x
    More detail...
I am running Windows 7 (64 bit) with all the latest updates and I had an iPad 2 running iOS 4.3.5 and I always docked it and my iPhone 4 to my PC using the USB hub on my Dell 2408 LCD panel.  I NEVER had any USB issues with either device until going to iTunes 10.5 & iOS 5.
The issue came up when I was doing a restore of the iOS 5 GM (which is the same as the final release of iOS 5) to my iPad 2.  When I started the restore, the iPad 2 gets reset to DFU mode (or whatever mode it gets in to start the restore) and at that point Windows complained about the USB Device being unrecognized.  After I gave up I told iTunes to do a regular restore back to the previous version (4.3.5) and Windows had no issues seeing my iPad and doing the restore connected to the same USB port.
So there appeared to be something about iTunes 10.5 or iOS 5 causes Windows to not be able to install the correct driver and have "USB Device Unrecognized" errors when my iPad 2 was connected to my Dell monitors USB hub.  I should mention that my iPhone 4 running iOS 5 has no problems being connected to my Dell monitors USB hub.  I tried all the suggestions that Apple has on their support section.  Restarting the Apple Mobile Device service, Uninstalling the bad USB device under the Device Manager in Windows and rescanning for devices, un-installing and then reinstalling iTunes 10.5 and the other Apple software etc... etc... Windows still could not find the correct USB driver and couldn't recognize the device.  Nothing worked or when it did it only lasted for a very short time.  One of the 4 ports on my Dell finally installed the correct drivers but then it stopped working.
The solution was for me to use the built in USB ports that are on my PC itself.  After I did that, Windows has no issues installing the proper driver for my iPad 2 and seeing it once I used the PC's USB ports.

Yes, Apple has caused people to go through massive panic, anxiety and wasted time by not coming out and telling us about this problem. They must know about it. How can we tell them? Now I understand why it took me 50 tries to upgrade to OS5. We all got the same crazy errors that caused us to reinstall iTunes, turn off our firewalls, buy new USB cables and basically waste tons of time and energy, when the solution was very simple. Plug your device into a USB port on your computer.
After years of using a peripheral USB hub successfully it's no wonder we all started freaking out and thinking it was a major problem. Yes, I'm blowing off some steam, but I've been an Apple fanatic for a long time and I'm not happy about their lack of response to this issue.

  • Cannot get the 5.1 Multimedia Centre Audio/USB Hub working

    Hi there,
I wonder if anyone could help save my sanity...
I have been using a Toshiba Tecra A8 laptop now for sometime with no problems. This is running with Windows XP. I love it, its great, all except for one thing.
I REALLY miss my Creative 5.1 speakers for listening to music to in my box room when working from home.
They just sort of sit there on the windowsill, pining to be used....
So, I thought to myself, there MUST be a 5.1 USB external soundcard that I could purchase to allow these speakers to be operational once again. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that Toshiba themselves made such a thing!!!
In my simple way, I believed that it must be the best solution, to purchase an accessory of the same manufacturer as the machine itself.
This would be a doddle and I would once again be listening to quality top end and punching bass......WRONG!!!
I have now installed and uninstaled the software 3 times.
The thing works lovely as an additional USB hub, perfect, no probs at all, but try to get a single note of music from the thing? Forget it!!!!
I can get sound from the laptops speakers when the usb lead is not connected in.
Everytime I do connect the multimedia (?) centre to the laptop I get the "Found new hardware" wizard come up & I am too simple to be able to simply tell the damn thing where the files that are now necessary might be.
So, I ask for all of your powers to solve this before I load the laptop, the speakers, the multimedia (?) into the car and head off to Toshiba HQ in Addlestone to demand satisfaction.
Many thanks for anything you can do to help me hear sound through these speakers once again.
    Soulster

About Multimedia Centre Audio, I have no idea.
    1. May be damaged USB 4 port mini hub itself lead to
    2.USB Interface Damage
    3. Chassis front interface, leading to voltage instability
    4. Used to extend the line leading to insufficient power supply to USB 4 port hub Interface Device Not Recognized
*Recommendations directly to the device plugged into the USB port on the back-end chassis (without extension)
    5. There is also a very important factor! Now USB, anyone can produce, it is clear there will be a problem, is not compatible with the system, more terrible thing is that these parallel imports please some of the manufacturers rookie programmers to write some of the junk drive and cause problems by virtue by virtue (such as something very popular in China)! So, bought brand on all right!
    6. It is possible that the wrong front USB access, and perhaps pick the wrong chip burned
    7. Motherboard BIOS settings

  • Airport Extreme and USB hub

Okay I connected a hub to my USB on the airport extreme. Now I can see both hard drives however I get an IP address conflict and the network basically shuts down. Is there something I am missing here?

Try reading the entire conversation, Duane, and you'll realize that I'm fully aware of the fact that he's talking about a USB hub. And let me point out the fact that your misunderstanding makes no sense because even if I had thought he was talking about an ethernet hub, an ethernet hub has no IP address of its own.
His problem is that he gets an error message indicating that an IP that has already been allocated is being used by another device. A USB hub gets no IP nor does a simple USB external drive. Still, when he plugs in the hub that error message pops up. Why? The only explanation I could come up with is that one of the drives he is attaching to the USB hub isn't a standard external USB drive.
Have I connected all the dots for you okay?

  • Mega PC issue with usb hub

I have an MSI Mega PC with the following config:
    2.66GHz P4 533Mhz FSB CPU
    2x512MB PC2700 DDR
    160GB Maxtor 7200RPM IDE Drive
    ATI Radeon 7500 All-In-Wonder
    TDK 440N DVD±R/RW drive
    Windows XP Pro SP1a
I have a ton of USB peripherals
    Linksys USB Wirless Ethernet
    ATI Wireless Receiver
    Western Digital 80GB External Drive
    Epson Scanner
    Epson Printer
    Veo Webcam
    Canon S400 Digital Camera hookup
To support the additional peripherals, I added a powered USB 2.0 hub to the rear of the system.  This worked for a week but then the card readers in the front no longer were recognized by the system. Also the boot up into Windows would take 3-4 minutes where it used to take less than 30 seconds. Under the Device manager, one of the USB controllers has a yellow exclamation mark that I could not get rid of.
I can alleviate these problems if I hook up the hub to one of the front usb ports instead of the back.  This is ok though I would rather have the usb hub connected to the back for aesthetic reasons.  Anybody know why there would be a problem hooking a usb hub to the back?

The most likely problem is the cable or USB connector. First, try another USB port, preferably in the back of your PC, and not on an external hub. Next get another cable.

  • Wireless iPod syncing - Belkin Network USB Hub F5L009

I stumbled across a nifty gadget today, but I'm having some issues and would like some help. The Belkin Network USB Hub is a thin black box about the same dimensions as my Airport Extreme base station and pulls a nifty trick: when attached to the router via Ethernet, the hub tricks your computer into thinking the attached USB devices are actually plugged into your computer.
My purpose for this purchase was wireless syncing of my iPods and iPhone. Since Apple seems to have some kind of vendetta against people doing this, I wasn't expecting it to work. But it did - for my old iPod mini. The iPod Touch and iPhone 3G showed up fine in the Belkin utility, but iTunes will not recognize them.
I'm still waiting on Belkin tech support. My hub is showing driver ver 1.3.0, although Belkin's support page seems to think ver 1.5.0 was included in the driver package they have posted out there. Only thing is the Silex kext in the package doesn't seem to match up. Frustrating!
Anywho, I figured someone out here might have an answer. Anyone run into this issue/know how to get the iTouch/iPhone to show up in iTunes + sync?
    Thanks!

We are already addressing some issues about the performance and stability of storage drives via Mac OS 10.5.6. • USB Hub Connection

    Hello All,
This is my first Mac and I have to say that I really like the UI and how media friendly this seems to be. On to my question. I have a home network that has 3 Windows PCs and the new Mac attached. All machines connect to a Linksys router (811g) without a problem.
I also have a USB hub that has two shared drives and a printer hanging off of it. The PCs see the USB hub, can print, and see the shared drives. The Mac cannot.
Now my knowledge is limited and I expect that the answer is quite simple. Any suggestions out there?
    Thanks.

I was having the same problem with my USB hub after connecting an audio interface that used up one of my USB ports on my MacBook Pro.  I connected the hub to the other computer port.  That's when all the trouble started with trying to come out of sleep mode.
My solution was to connect my keyboard directly to the computer port and then daisy chain the hub out of the USB port on the keyboard. It seems that you need to have your input devices on the first part of the chain.
    I hope that's helpful
    Cheers.

  • Am i able to connect 40 iPads with USB hub(Powered) to iTunes (Windows) and Sync?

    Dear Apple Support,
I would like to ask about can i connect 40 iPads with (USB Hub(Powered) able to support up to 127 Devices) to iTunes(Windows) and Sync all with same Apps?
    Regards,

Okay... I've just found the solution. It's really simple, just plug the phone to the MacBook, fire up iTunes, check the "Sync Photos from iPhoto" option, make sure all the other options are not checked, and just sync. Voila! my iPhoto library is now in the palm of my hand.

  • IPhone and USB hub ....

    Hi,
Is there a reason why my iPhone does not show up when connected to my USB 2.0 hub ??? If connected to my iMac it shows up ...
    Thanks in advance.

    Robert Lesperance wrote:
Apple usually prevents problems that simple. My computer's 3 USP ports are already crowded ... Plugging my iPhone to my iMac is a plug/unplug situation.
So plug your other devices into the hub and reserve one dedicated USB port for the iPhone.
I would have also thought Apple would have implemented a feature that exists already in most of cell phones, a wireless connection to sync with the computer. No wireless and no USB hub connection.
The iPhone is not most cell phones. It is a unique piece with unique features. If it did everything that other cells did the same way there would be no need for it.
If I add to that the absence of a search feature in iCal and Address Book, the fact that they are no notes already implemeted, I would say they are letting go features bit by bit. Design is good and can get iPhone sold, but we usually think of Apple more like a genial feature driven architect.
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.htm.
Narrowing us to use only one cellular company to get a share of our ATT's (or other cell phone companies) monthly cell fees is the biggest insult to the Apple community. In business we call this a «kick back» and it is normally badly perceived. You sell your product a decent price and with honest and upfront conditions and customers will respect and be loyal. I really don't appreciate this move from Apple and me and my family are loyal users since 1984. Considering asiatic markets are potential buyers and can give Apple big profits, Apple can afford to offer a unlocked iPhone to the world.
Its not uncommon for a cell to be locked to a carrier upon initial release. In addition to this, there are a few features on the iPhone (Visual Voicemail) that required the carriers to upgrade their current systems. This could not have been offered with an unlocked release.

  • K8N SLI Platinum - lockup at boot, caused by USB hub?

    Hi.
Updated my bios today as well as enabled 'Cool 'n Quiet'. This caused lockups in Win XP, forcing me to hit the reset button.
After the second reboot the computer refused to boot. According to the D-bracket it stopped at 'BIOS Sign On'.
I followed the troubleshooting guide and ended up here: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=75712.msg533104#msg533104
Although the steps taken in the thread above didn't help, one poster mentioned that removing all USB devices could help.
My keyboard is connected to a USB hub in my monitor, when I removed this the comp started up fine, as well as when connecting the keyboard directly to the computer.
Just wanted to pass on my experiences, maybe can help somebody down the line.

  • USB Hub does not work

I recently purchased this USB hub.
    http://www.jascoproducts.com/products/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=8&idcategory=13
My laptop cooler is able to be power through the USB hub.
However, my mouse, keyboard, and external harddrives are not working. For instance, the laser on the optical mouse is not even lighting up.
My mouse, Keyboard, and external hard drive works fine when it is connected directly to the USB pots on my macbook Pro.
Is this a compatibility issue? I mean, GE says that the hub works with mac os. And for a generic hub like this, there shouldn't be any issues right?
    Message was edited by: wlfpck

    Hi wifpck;
The first problem I see with this hub is that it is USB 1.1 which is a very slow out of date protocol.
Secondly it doesn't appear to be a powered hub. Hence all of the power for the hub must come from the USB on your Mac. Powering laptop cooler maybe over loading the USB port. I would suggest that you try it without the laptop cooler connected and see if works better that way.
