WebDAV features

After reading the WebDav Interface documentation (dated 2002) a customer has a few questions based on these quotes:
"Similarly, Portal approval functionality is not supported on the WebDAV side."
Anyone know if and when this will be supported?
"Note that versioning is not supported on the WebDav side. If you activate Audit versioning in Portal, then edit and save a file via Web Folders, the modified file overwrites the original file, and the original version is not retained. If you want to save the original version of a modified file, do so before you make your edits, copying then renaming the copy, making sure the file to be modified retains the original name."
Is this statement true in the latest release ?'
Anybody know if and when this will be supported?
"Neither templates, regions, nor tabs are currently represented. Because tabs are not represented in Web Folders, their content is not represented. This means that if a file item is placed on a tab in Portal, that item will not display in a Web Folder."
Is this statement true in the latest release ?'
Anybody know the current status or when this will be supported?

Please go to Portal Center and review the whitepaper 'New Features in OracleAS Portal 10g (9.0.4)'. In this document you will see that in 904 (and in the 9026 upgrade for that matter) versioning, approvals and publishing files to specific regions are now supported.
Tabs are a publishing construct (a way organizing content on a page) therefore not something that can be modeled very well in file system particularly when you consider that a page may have tabs and subpages. If this is important to you, I recommend following a best practice of separating the management of content from the publishing of the content by creating one or more pages (in a separate page group perhaps) where the content is loaded and managed and expose these as page portlets on 'end user facing' pages where the content is published (perhaps within tabs).

  • Unable to save files via WebDAV into portal

My Windows Explorer client is running on a windows 2000 environment.
We have set up webDAV to be able to save files directly in to portal from Windows Explorer. I cannot get this to work.
I have a connection and can browse all pages in portal via Win Explorer, and also open files and save them back. I can also drag and drop files into portal from other folders on our file server. When I try to save directly though from word or when downloading from other server directly into portal, I get error message: "You cannot save into the folder specified. Please choose another location."
    Thankful for help.

What version are you on? In 9.0.2.6, more detailed error messages are written to the WebDAV user's personal page (if one exists). Look there to see what the problem is.
If you're using 9.0.2, I recommend upgrading to 9.0.2.6 (or 9.0.4 when available). The WebDAV feature in particular is much more stable in that release.

  • WebDAV access from File Manager gone from Belle

The Files (formerly File Manager) app has been stripped of its WebDAV feature.
For me, this is a big inconvenience, as it means that N8, E6, 701 now has no built-in means of exchanging files with our home Synology NAS box. (AFAIK, Belle has no FTP, NFS or AFP client "out of the box" or available in the Store, and I'd have to cough up £3 for MyExplorer to add a Windows file-sharing (SMB) client to N8, E6, 701 etc.)
I don't know if anyone involved with Belle on the Nokia side, reads this forum, but after asking them why they felt they had to remove a genuinely-useful feature, I would plead with them either to restore the WebDAV client functionality to Files, or provide a separate app to enable some kind of file-sharing (WebDAV, SMB, FTP, whatever).
If I have to pay for a third-party client to give me this functionality, no problem, then so be it, but I do have to ask why a 2012 smartphone platform is shipping without a single means of exchanging files over a network (and I don't count USB or Bluetooth file-transfer). For that matter: does anyone know why WebDAV was removed from Files?
Maybe I'm the only user who even noticed that WebDAV was gone, but I just had to "vent" a bit...

    And this answer I received from th devoloper of myExplorer in March;
    Hello!
Unfortunately, myExplorer does not support WebDAV. However you can still connect remotely to your NAS or other file server in two ways:
        A. By forwarding the SMB port in your router. This is easy to setup but it is not very secure. While authentication information (user name and password) is protected, as they are never transmitted unencrypted, the rest of the traffic will go over unsecured connection. Here is what you have to do for this to work:
        1. Forward port 445 (or 139) on the file server (or NAS) in your router to another port (for example 22678 - the number is not important, what is important is to write it down for later).
        2. Create a new network share in myExplorer and type the external IP address of your router in the field "Computer IP address). If your external IP address is dynamic and you are using some kind of dynamic DNS, instead of IP address, please fill the DNS name of the router in the field "Computer DNS name".
        3. Fill in the port number from step 1 in the field "Port number"
        4. Select "Always ask" as access point because you may need to use different access points depending on your current physical location (3G on the road or Wi-Fi in the office, etc.).
        5. Please note that you will have to add exception to your firewall for port 445 or 139 as most firewalls block the ports 445 and 139 when the other IP address is not local. This is true even for the built-in firewall in Windows.
        B. By using VPN network.  This method is better from security point of view but it requires more work to setup. First you need to setup a VPN network from your phone to the LAN where the NAS is located. This can be done in few different ways and the concrete steps depend on what kind of VPN you are using. After you have working VPN, all you need to do is this:
        1. Fill in the NetBIOS name or the (local, not external) IP address of the computer.
        2. Select the created VPN access point as the access point for this network share.
Please note that both methods above require some knowledge about the networks. We are planning to create a tutorial, which explains the needed steps but it is not ready yet.
    Best regards!

I have the same problem as Steve, and no, the link that Craig provided did not solve it. He is the breakdown of the problem
    1) I bought the iPad 2 and all of iWork.
    2) I found out the iWork is terrible incompatible with anything that I use.
    3) I spent $100 to by the Airstash to be able to use its local WebDAV features.
    4) In the mean time, I set up a temporary account with Ajaxfilebrowser, to have at least basic usability out of my overpriced iworks suite.
    5) The Airstash arrived in the mail, and the temporary Ajaxfilebrowser account had terminated itself.
    6) I tried to set up my Airstash WebDAV, only to find out that iWork supports only one WebDAV account at a time.
7 part 1) I tried to remove my WebDAV account, only to find out that you have to log into it, before you can press the "sign out" button.
7 part 2) I cannot log into the Ajaxfilebrowser account, because it does not exist anymore.
7 part 3) I cannot reopen the same Ajaxfilebrowser account, because it is a randomly assigned number.
    8) Now my iWork apps are useless, because I cannot log out of the non existing WebDAV account.
    9) Now I literally wasted $637.49 on the iPad, about $70 on accessories, about $100 on apps and $109.99 on the Airstash, and after all of that, Apple left me in a ditch.
Please help. Any and all advice is welcome.
If apple cannot resolve their convoluted programing, of which this problem is only the tip of the iceberg, then I feel obligated as responsible citizen to sue them into being more considerate of their customers.
Thank you, in advance, for your help, V

  • WebDAV Dramas

    Hi folks...
I'm having issues connecting to my Page Group using WebDAV?
It used to work without issue, and I believe the problem may relate to me changing the Page Group name in question, as WebDAV still has the folder with its previous name...
I have reviewed metalink doco and it seems to confirm my problem is caused by this, but I can't seem to find the solution to get around this problem.
If anyone has experienced this issue and knows how to overcome it, your help would be greatly appreciated!
    Cheers,
    Daniel Sly

This problem is fixed with the 9.0.2.3 patch. However, I recommend that you upgrade to 9.0.2.6 (or the soon to be released 10g (9.0.4)) to take advantage of other enhancements we have made to the WebDAV feature.

  • Some web pages incomplete after copy using webDAV

I copy entire folders of html files (using Windows Explorer copy/paste) into database using WebDAV feature. Some documents don't get copied fully.

Do the affected files contain any special characters?
Which version of Windows do you use (also which language settings)?

  • WebDAV Behavior

I set up a Web Folder connection to our portal and can easily drag Excell and Word docs to the desktop, edit them and drag them back into the folder. However, when I take a different approach by doubleclicking the doc(s) in the folder I get a login prompt and can only view the doc(s) Read Only (there are no desktop remnants nor other portal sessions open that I am aware of). We are running ver. 9.0.2.1., versioning and check-in/out are off.
Is this the Office DAV client wrestling with the Web Folder or is something else going on maybe with LOCK? I expected edit capability either way when I'm the sole user. What am I missing?

The WebDAV feature has been greatly improved in 9.0.2.6. 9.0.2 had issues with multiple logins (this has not gone away entirely due to some limitations in Office). I'm not sure about the read-only problem, but in general I would recommend that you upgrade to 9.0.2.6 (or the soon-to-be-released 10g (9.0.4)) to take advantage of the WebDAV improvements.
We've also partnered with Xythos to enhance the integration between Portal and the desktop via WebDAV. Take a look at the viewlet on http://portalcenter.oracle.com/publishing.

  • Lion server - is it right for me?

We are currently using a Mac Mini in our small office for file serviing. It is running 10.6 (NOT server). I have some software running on it that allows me to set up "mount points" for different user groups. I run the mini headless, and am able to "screen share" via the local network or through my MobileMe account using "back to my mac."
The setup works fairly well, but can be difficult to administrate.
I am considering the jump to Lion server. Looking past the marketing department descriptions I want to make sure it is the right choice for me. Here are some of the things I am doing and would like to do:
    - I would like to continue sharing files. We have about 5 users. I would like to be able to set varying levels of access for each person. I can do this on an individual basis but would also like "workgroup" permissions/access.
    - Right now we only have local access (except for my admin login). Ideally I would like to have the same file access (with restrictions and permissions) extended to sharing files via internet. Even better if I could limit which files or folders are available over the net for all except me.
-Looking beyond file sharing, I am interested in the WebDAV features discussed on the promo page. The short description of these features seems like I can basically run an iDisk on my mini. I can then let workers upload and download pages/keynote/number documents. We can also use this to coordinate calendars locally and across the internet. Plus it will sync with our iPads and iPhones. Am I understanding this correctly?
-Along the same lines, there is also iCal Server 3. The way I understand it, this can basically act as a replacement for the old MobileMe calendar, right? I see how calendars can be shared and understand how that works. But can these calendars also be administered, with permissions, from the server? In other words, can I (as admin) create calendars for Bob, Tom and Doris - let's say a personal and business calendar for each. Then set it up so that Doris can see Tom's business and personal calendars but only Bob's business calendar?
-Web server: I have played with the Apache server on previous non-server OS X versions. Can Lion server be easily set up to run as an INTERNAL web server? (Web pages viewable on the local network). If we wanted to make those web pages viewable outside the local network, is the process very difficult? We have a company to host our regular web and email services. I am only looking for some simple "company news" type information and maybe a small Filemaker database for a handful of employees.
We don't currently have a static IP, which I guess would be necessary for making some of these features accessible from outside the office. Do I need to get a static IP from my ISP, are there features in Lion Server that eliminate the need for that (e.g. back to my mac) or are there other options that provide a workaround for this?
Based on the above, is Lion Server what I need? Is there another product/application better suited for the above tasks?
Thanks in advance for any ideas, help or suggestions.

Do you think the monitor on the new Imac is good?
Yes, I use mine for both digital photography and working with video. The extra screen real estate is extremely handy.
If you need portability, I would keep the iBook also.

  • Broken image links on APEX 3.0 in Oracle 10g XE? Here's the solution

You're on Oracle 10g XE and you've just upgraded your APEX from 2.0 to 3.0. You log into APEX Admin and there's tons of broken image links. You look into the Oracle documentation for APEX and it instructs you to copy the Images folder into your htmldb directory if you're using Oracle 10g standard, etc. But you're using Oracle 10g XE and there is no Images folder anywhere to be seen!
    HERE'S THE SOLUTION:
    http://daust.blogspot.com/2006/03/where-are-images-of-application.html
    Excerpt from the website:
In OracleXE these resources (Images) are stored directly in the database, using the Oracle XMLDB feature. You can access the resources and modify them directly by using the WebDAV feature of the XMLDB.
    (1) With Internet Explorer, just go to File > Open > http://127.0.0.1:8080/i (check "open as webfolder")
Then, copy the contents of your apex/images folder into this webfolder. It will take about 10 minutes. When it's done, refresh your Apex 3.0 website and lo and behold! Images! :)
Be sure to thank Dietmar Aust for his solution to this problem, provided on his website: http://daust.blogspot.com/2006/03/where-are-images-of-application.html

    Hi mv,
I probably mis-spoke. It is not so much the features that are missing in Sun Web Server, as it is the availability of additional user plugins. However, that being said, I chose Sun Web Server over Apache because of security and performance. I realize additional plugins could adversely affect both of those. I have emailed Sun marketing about a specific feature for Web Dav I would like to see. This would make things much easier for people who would like to do mass hosting virtual hosting. Most of the real valuable features that gave Apache an edge, the web server team has added in version 7. I have pasted a portion of the letter I emailed to Sun marketing below about Web Dav, and my logic behind it. This as well as being able to hook the user system into standard open source databases makes for a broader solution appeal. I realize I only have one view of the market, and these are just my two cents. :-) Thanks!

    **** Letter ******
I was introduced to Sun Web Server several years ago when we began looking at moving servers away from Microsoft technology and also bringing them into our facility. As a network and sys admin, I evaluated using different web servers out there as we had a few years to work on this project to ensure uptime and reliability. Initially, I found Sun Web Server quite confusing and looked at Apache. However, after the web interface was retooled, I found Sun Web Server quite simple and refreshing to use. Since we have to be CISP compliant for the credit card industry, security was very important to us. Not only from a code standpoint, but also from an accidental misconfiguration standpoint. In my opinion, Sun Web Server out shines Apache and other alternatives by a long shot.
As far as the WebDav feature, what I have been looking at is how to expand and offer hosting and web services. I currently work for a small company which retails products on the web, and I also contribute to a few open source projects. Currently, I am working with http://www.mynajs.org/. We have been discussing how we could offer hosting for people wanting to try out the project. Hosting companies using Linux typically have deep hooks into the Linux operating system for managing users. For hosting, you have a whole specialized Linux stack with specialized disk quotas, users, ftp server with users based on Linux users, and mail. From my standpoint, while this works, it can become a nightmare as far as updates, system administration, patching, etc. For a business ROI, and technology footprint, this doesn't make sense. There are control panels out there that take care of some of this, but now you have another whole layer of technology to troubleshoot. If I do not want to use the Linux/Apache stack, and if I am using Java, and do not want to add Tomcat as well, what do I use? With Sun Web Server, I get the best of both worlds, one install, one piece of software, operating system separation, blazingly fast speed, out of the box clustering, one interface for management, standard serving as well as Java, and WebDav so that now I can eliminate an ftp server and reduce my footprint for security and maintenance headaches. One neat package. However, now I still have to manage and restrict users. How to do this using Sun Web Server? Right now, I have to either run an ftp server with quotas built in, or go back to the Linux operating system and work with specialized scripts an maintenance. In theory, if Sun Web Server had quotas, I have my user system with the controls I need. At the very least, if there were hooks to the WebDav system to perform custom processing on certain events, it would leave the door open for greater control of the user and system. Now if we want to offer a hosting solution, whether it be online storage, web hosting, or Java hosting, or social site, all we need is one product, Sun Web Server! With all of its features for enhancing performance, security, and much more. I might also add, that for a small companies, Sun Web Server has been a pretty much set it and forget it solution. It has been my experience for our servers to run pretty much without intervention once they are setup. With the watch dog process, if there is a problem, it is rarely noticed except for the admin watching the logs. Technically, I am not sure why anyone would choose something different than Sun Web Server. Apache is the hosting standard, but it is really Apache plus Linux. With a few more user features, I think Sun Web Server could replace the whole Apache/Linux stack, the Apache/Linux/Tomcat stack, outshine those solutions on heavy loads and high end features, and offer better ROI.

  • Where to read: Document Customisation

    Hi,
We have a pre-xdb document management system where we supply vendor documents in a table in one schema identified by a number and allow the customer to customize any of these documents by creating a document in a document table in another schema.
Multiple customers can be hosted on the same database in this way where they all share the same vendor documents but can customise their documents as it suits them.
Can you suggest how XDB and its webdav features could be used in this way and recommend what reading would be most useful for us to learn how to port our document application to XDB.
    Thanks,
    John Russell, San Francisco.

The ACL mechanism with XML DB can do this. A read only acl on the master copy of the document and private ACL on the copy

  • How to create a portlet to upload/delete files into portal pages

I wanted to know if it is possible to create a simple UI wherein a user could choose a file from his HDD and upload it to the page as an item.I know this can be done by editing the page, but when the user clicks on edit he would have to use the default portal interface to do the same, i want to avoid precisely that.
If possible then how do I go about making it.This UI would also require that the user be able to select from a list of previously uploaded files and delete some of them. This i require so that any authenticated portal user could access/downloaded the uploaded files given the url to the same.

You can use the WebDAV feature in Portal Release 2 to provide a simple interface for uploading and managing files. In addition, the content management APIs can be used to build custom interfaces. These APIs are available for Portal 3.0.9 and will soon be available for Release 2. There is no Delete API, but one is planned for an upcoming release.

    Hello,
We have an existing internal web site that I would like to bring into Portal Page Groups. The content is mostly static HTML with relatively linked images and docs. Is there a script or procedure for doing this?
    Thanks for any assistance.

You can just copy the files over using WebDAV or the Zip file feature. For WebDAV, I recommend that you be on version 9.0.2.6 or later.
Most current documentation on the WebDAV feature is in the 9.0.4 User Guide (currently beta, also applies to version 9.0.2.6), section 2.5.2. Zip files are documented in section 7.5.1.3.2.

  • IPad PC Free ????? Not 100 % yet, especially for file connectivity.

    Hi,
Why does Apple make it so hard to get your files off your iPad without a PC?
It is easy to get files onto your iPad, but moving them between apps, and off your iPad is a headache.
    - The "Open In" limit forces you to delete apps until the app you need comes up in the list???? PDF files are supported by a lot of apps now.
    - I can not find a WebDAV feature on the Time Capsule which would allow you to save directly from Pages etc to your home drive.
    - iCloud needs a PC to download your files, and is very very slow when it does a sync. Dropbox is a million times better.
    - iDisk was stopped, and I am not sure if you can save directly from Pages to a Time Capsule with iCloud.
    - You can not connect an external hard drive to the USB port adapter and save files, let alone all your photos and movies. One way only.
Thankfully Airstash A02 might help, along with other new devices like iFlashdrive and the Seagate wireless drive, but all at an extra cost.
I am hoping the new Rasberry Pi $25 Linux computer might provide a solution for all the other downfalls.
Come on Apple, make the iPad 100 % PC Free in 2012.
Give us a WebDAV portable wireless hard drive that works with all our apps for saving files.

This service enables you to publish a Web service from a Java class. A wizard creates the WSDL document and deployment files needed to publish your code as a Web service. After you select the class and methods you want to publish, the wizard generates deployment descriptors, a JAX-RPC mapping file, and a WSDL document that can be deployed to an application server.

one way would be to upload the files to XE using the WebDav feature of the XML DB. You find more information here: http://daust.blogspot.com/2006/03/where-are-images-of-application.html
Another option would be to configure a standalone Apache as a proxy server to XE. This way you can configure the Apache any way you like.
