WebDAV file system authorization box

This box appears on my screen requesting login information: username and password. But it doesn't recognize either one that I input. I cancel the box (twice). Five minutes later, it's back, like a fly buzzing around. Two more cancels buys five more minutes. I don't even know what WebDAV is: so much for having a friend touch my Apple. Help!

WebDAV has nothing to do with synchronization - it's a technology for posting or 'publishing' content publicly on the internet. With Mac OS X, it is most often associated with selectively publishing iCal calendars as an alternative to doing so with .Mac. You are likely sharing selected files and directories on your computer with potentially everyone on the internet, and—if you do not know that you are doing so or why you are doing so—that's a big problem.
I suggest that you have a conversation with your friend about why your platform has anything at all to do with WebDAV. Keep in mind that it is intended to allow users to collaboratively edit and manage files on remote web servers. You might ask yourself, or your friend, if you are being managed remotely.
Incidentally, it is not a good idea to offer someone you do not absolutely trust sufficient access to enable such technologies on your computer. Maybe, there is an innocent explanation for this behavior - likely, there is not. The mere fact that you are not aware of what is going on should be sufficient cause for concern on your part.
Here is some background on the technology:

  • Default File system Authorization

    Dear all
I have a question regarding the file systems Authorization
By default File system are created with authorization as follow :
                     - Everyone RX (this folder only)
                     - Users (3 sets of permissions)
                     - CREATOR OWNER F - subfolder and files only
                     - SYSTEM F (all files and folders)
                     - Adminsitrators F (all files and folders)
In fact what I do not like about this is that in the "user group" of the machine is populated "Authenticated Users"
So my collegues non IT, create share on these machines leaving the inheritance and then the whole company have access to thoses files.
Iwas wondering what would be the impact of removing the entries for users, creator owner, everyone and system
would that lead for issues for application to run?
Why keeping such wide permission on sever by default instead of closing the permission and granting access to people that need it ?
    Thanks for your help
    Bruno

    Hi Bruno,
I understand your concern. However, the default permission set is the result after balancing security and usability. If user groups like authenticated users are removed by default, it would break things for sure.
Regarding critical servers like Domain Controllers and file servers, we should keep them in a secure environment and only grant physical access to qualified administrators.

  • Difference between Web DAV, File system, simple web repositories

    Hello all,
can somebody please tell when we use webdav, file system, simple web repositories and for what application swe use? And what are the differences between these three?
What is a crawler? and Index in KM?
Thanks in advance. I appreciate your help.
    //Raj.

    Hi Raj,
As Kyle said in the last message, you can find the information you wanted in the SAP Help Portal.
I have some experience on using the WebDAV and want to share with you. There is some bugs in WebDAV on renaming the document / folder for non-English language. So, don't use WebDAV for renaming file / folder under such environment. If you want to do so, you should better do so in the EP.

  • Restrict or disable file system export to force usage of CTS+

Is there any way to restrict or disable direct file system export in a portal environment (for example by authorizations or customizing) to force usage of CTS+?
Thanks in advance for any kind of input!
    Cheers,
    Andy

    Hi Lokendra,
I know that already. Basically I need to know if it's somehow possible to limit the selection on CTS+ only when trying to export any kind of objects out of a Portal environment - meaning the option file export is not availbale at all. If not - is it somehow possible to distinguish between File Export and CTS+ by authorization (not file system authorizations)? As far as I've seen it, the authorizations for both functions are based on the same objects and need the same parameters at least for export. Doesn't seem like a way to solve this issue.
    Cheers,
    Andy

  • Writing to the Siebel File System (on a UNIX box) using eScript

    Hello All,
I am trying to extract data from the Siebel database using a Business Services written in eScript, write the data to a flat file, and place that file in the Siebel File System. The Siebel File System is on an AIX box. Does anyone know the syntax for doing this? I have not been able to get the fputs function to work.
Also, I do not want to create this file as an attachment. I simply need to create a flat, TXT file. Thanks.

    Hi,
What is the sequence of operations that you are performing in e-script?
You should try to do it as:
    1. var iFile = Clib.fopen(FileName, "w");
    2. Clib.fputs(DataToWrite, iFile);
    3. Clib.fclose(iFile);
If you are trying to write to a file, ensure that you are passing "w" in step 1 which opens the file for writing.
If this doesn't help then you will have to use Integration Objects to extract data and write that to a xml file on the server using vanilla services.
    Thanks and Regards,

  • How do I use a NAS file system attached to my router to store iTunes purchases?

We have four Windows devices networked in our house.  They all run iTunes with the same Apple ID so when any one of them has iTunes running, we can see that computer on our Apple TV.  Two run Windows XP, one runs Vista Business, and the newest runs Windows 7.  Upgrading all to the same Windows software is out of the question.  Our NAS is hung on an "off warranty" Linksys E3000 router which communicates via USB with a 1TB NTFS formatted Western Digital hard drive.  Our plan when we set up this little network, not cheaply, in our 1939 baloon construction tank of a house, was to build our library of digital images, music, and video primarily on that device.  It supports a variant of Windows streaming support, but poorly.  The best streaming support for our environment seems to be our ethernet connected Apple TV which is hung off the big TV in our family room, and has access to the surround sound "Home Theater" in that room.  We've incrementally built up collections of photos, digitized music, and most recently educational materialsd, podcasts, etc. which threaten storage limits on a couple of default C: drives on these windows systems.  iTunes, before the latest upgrades, gave us some feedback on the file system connections it established without going to the properties of the individual files, but the latest one has yet to be figured out.  MP3's and photos behave fairly well, including the recently available connection between Adobe software and iTunes which magically appeared, allowing JPEG files indexed by Adobe Photoshop Elements running on the two fastest computers to show up under control on the Apple TV attached 56' Samsung screen!
Problems arose when we started trying to set things up so that purchases downloaded from the iTunes store ended up directly on the NAS, and when things downloaded to a specific iTunes library on one of the Windows boxes caused storage "issues" on that box.  A bigger problem looming in the immediate future is the "housecleaning" effort which is part of my set of "new years resolutions."  How do I get control of all of my collections and merge them on the NAS without duplicate files, or when, for example, we have .ACC and .MP3 versions, only the required "best" option for the specific piece of music becomes a candidate for streaming?
I envission this consolidation effort as a "once in a lifetime" effort.  I'm 70, my wife is 68 and not as "technical" as I am, so documented procedures will be required.
I plan to keep this thread updated with progress and questions as this project proceeds.  Links to "how to" experiences which are well documented, etc. may be appreciated by those who follow it.  I plan to post progress reports and detailed issues going forward.   Please help?

Step 1 - by trial and error...
So far, I have been able to create physical files containing MP3 and JPG on the NAS using the Windows XP systems to copy from shared locations on the Vista and Win7 boxes.  This process has been aided by the use of a 600 GB SATA 2 capable hard drive enclosure.  I first attach to Win 7 or Win Vista and reboot to see the local drive spaces formatted on the portable device.  Then I copy files from the user's private directories to the public drive space.  When the portable drive is wired to an XP box, I can use Windows to move the files from the portable device to the NAS without any of the more advanced file attributes being copied to the NAS.  Once the files are on the NAS, I can add the new folder(s) to iTunes on any of the computers and voila, the data becomes sharable via iTunes.  So far, this works for anything that I have completely purchased, or for MP3's I made from the AIC files created when I purchased alblums via iTunes.
I have three huge boxes full of vynl records I've accumulated.  The ones that I've successfully digitized via a turntable attached to the sound card on one of my computers and third party software, have found their way to the NAS after being imported into iTunes and using it to bring down available album art work.  In general I've been reasonably well pleased with the sound quality of digital MP3 files created this way, but the software I've been using sometimes has serious problems automatically separating individual songs from the album tracks and re-converting "one at a time" isn't very efficient.

  • Open library from AFP share - Unsupported File System - Aperture 3

Testing Aperture 3 - Exported a project as a library to an AFP (10.5) share.
I then tried to reopen the library and got an error Unsupported File System ?
Is there possibly a network file system that will support Aperture 3 libraries ?

Temp solution in this thread - tested it and it works
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2330306&tstart=30
I have found an workaround for this issue. Do the following:
    First, upgrade the library to version 3 using Aperture on the computer where you have the disk containing the library; if this is not possible, copy the library on the computer running Aperture and do the update there, then copy the updated library back;
Then navigate to the network disk where you have the updated library and double-click it: a dialog box will come out saying something like <There was an error opening the database for the library "/Volumes/Media/Pictures/Aperture Library.aplibrary". The library could not be opened because the file system of the library's volume is unsupported> Click OK.
A new dialog box will appear asking "Which library do you want Aperture to use?" and a list with all libraries; among them, the library situated on the network disk. Select it and click "Choose".
Voila, after a delay depending on the speed of your network and remote disk, the library will open.
Note that this "show" will repeat each time you will start-up Aperture. Anyway, it's better than nothing. I hope that Apple will correct this soon.
And yes, I am using the Trial Version, I will buy a license only after Apple solves this issue! "

  • File open dialog box broken in all apps! ( 10.5.6/7

Hi, I've got a very odd problem that Apple phone support seem to be unable to solve.
Basically, every file open dialog box system wide is broken, from file->open in textedit to the browse button on websites for uploading files.
When trying to display this finder panel, it beachballs for ten seconds then gives me a grey area where the usual finder browser usually resides and the open / cancel buttons at the bottom of the panel.
I've repaired permissions which had no effect.
The finder works perfectly other than it's little file open dialog which other applications use...
Updating to 10.5.7 did nothing to fix the issue.
Does anybody have any idea how to resolve this?
    Thanks!
    chris.

V.K. had you create another user to eliminate the possibility that it is a preference file causing the problem. It was reported the problem remained with another user, so the problem is system wide, not with a single user's preferences.
The Archive & Install is relatively painless. It only replaces the system and leaves everything else untouched. What is replaced is saved in a new folder it creates named Previous System, in case there is something there you might want to bring back (most often 3rd party files, but I have never needed anything from the Previous System folder).
The only hassle with the A & I is resetting preferences. If you check the option during the A & I to retain user settings, there is usually not very much that needs resetting.

  • Save As / File Open dialog boxes too large to use on laptop

I have a Macbook Air and am using one of the new Apple LED Cinema Displays, although this problem was also present when I was using my older Apple Studio Display.
The problem is that some of the system dialog boxes, notably File Open and Save As are huge when I am just using my Macbook with no external screen. They are so big i cant see the lower right drag handle and make them smaller and cant access buttons at the bottom like "New Folder".
I think this is because I resized the dialog box when I last had my large external monitor connected and now that it is not connected (I'm at home on holiday not at work) I cant find a way to make them reset to their normal size.
Does anyone know anything that would help? I've had a good search online and also in these forums and havent found anything - but apologies if I've missed an existing open thread.
    Thanks,
    Glenn.

This did not work for me - and in my case it was the "Export" Save As sheet in Keynote. There is a real solution for this problem. Firstly all user 'preferences' and these are things that include not only preferences set in the application's preferences window but also window position, size, recent items etc. are stored in the preferences .plist file for an application (stored in the users account Library folder) . If an application starts to behave strangely, crashes on start etc. deleting this file while the application is NOT running can often fix a problem. So if a window is in an unusual location or partially off-screen then trashing the file often will fix the problem (BTW - if you are unsure how to find the file activate the Finder and select the "GO" menu -> "Go to Folder" and type ~/Library/Preferences - make sure you are not in the System's preferences folder - deleting these items is typically bad...). Preference files for an application are typically named com.companyname.programname.plist. So for Keynote the plist is com.apple.keynote.plist. Preferences are recreated when the application is launched. Often though this is a bit extreme. If you double click a plist file the "Property List Editor" application will start (at least if you have the developers tools installed - all free and on the Leopard DVD - with a free Apple Developer ID you can also run the most up to date version pre-snow leopard). In the plist editor all of the various options available in the program are listed - ones from the preference panel and other application information. In the case of Keynote (possibly other apps - I haven't checked) the NSNavPanelExpandedSizeForSaveMode key stores the size of the Save/Save As sheet. I downsized from a 17" MBP to a 15" MBP and the string size for this was 682 wide by 843 tall in pixels - my screen is only 900 px and once you consider the space needed for the application menu bar and tool bar the dialog buttons were 'just' barely visible - tauntingly so. I dropped the height to 743, saved the plist and reopened Keynote (remember to edit these while the application is not running - and always save a copy first before editing the file). This worked for me perfectly and unlike other suggestions here provides precision control. Now having said that 1) these files are XML and can be edited using a text editor but the plist editor is much prettier; 2) typically the keys are named using their appropriate Coca names for the property - but each developer can and does write their own code often deviating from Coca - hmm MS, Adobe come to mind - so remember that its good to read through the plist and Google to make sure that you are editing the correct information; 3) plists are automatically recreated if you really screw-up and need to delete - unfortunately in doing so Word will forget that no-one actually likes "when editing automatically select the whole word" so you will need to redo all of those kinds of preference tweaks.

  • Is there a way to configure NTFS file system on an NSS 324 SmartStorage unit. So far I can setup ext 3 or ext 4 but no option for NTFS

Is there a way to configure NTFS file system on an NSS 324 SmartStorage unit. So far I can setup ext 3 or ext 4 but no option for NTFS. This unit should be joining a Windows Server 2008 R2 network and needs to be shared with all users. This unit will replace a File server running Win 2003 SP2.
Message was edited by: Hermann Koster
Thank you very much for your reply. The idea is to decommission the Windows file server which is running Windows Server 2003 SP2 operating system but is not running as a DC but just a member server. All this server is doing is providing file server services so my idea is to replace it with the NSS 324 box. My only concern is that when my NSS joins the domain all my users would be able to see and access network shares transparently, the same way they saw the former W2003 file server. After I transferred the data from File server I will use the same for NSS that was used for file server as well as same IP address and folders path as before.
    Any suggestions or advice?
Once again thank you very much for your reply.
    Cheers,

The internal HDDs must be formatted in either EXT3 or EXT4 file system because NSS uses Linux OS.  This is mainly because the RAM designed to fit with the customized Linux OS's size.
You can connect to an external HDD via a  USB or eSATA port. The external HDD's file system can be NTFS, FAT32, AFT or EXT3/4 to be recognized for read/write. You can connect a 2TB USB/eSATA drive connec to the NSS via USB port to format your HDD for NTFS, AFT, FAT32, or EXT3/4 partition.
You can join the NSS to a Windows domainr so all domain users to access NSS. You cannot replace the NSS for the Windows 2003 SP2 server. They are two different products and do different jobs. Windows server is features sets server while the NSS is the files/data server.
    Hope that helps!!
