WebHelp and browsers
I have RoboHelp 7.
My default browser is Chrome.
I'm using WebHelp on a Java-based app with context-sensitive Help.
First issue:
When I click our Help icon on our app, the Help always opens in Explorer. Just in case Chrome isn't supported, I set FireFox as my default browser. Explorer still opens. How can I ensure that the Help opens in the user's default browser?
Second issue:
Because this is context-sensitive Help, each dialog box of the app includes a Help icon that spawns it's own related Help topic. However, each time I click a Help icon in the app, it opens an entirely new browser. Is there any way I can get it to either:
a. Open a new tab within the same browser?
or
b. Overwrite the open Help in the browser with the new Help topic?

If you double click the start page when the help is on your PC, I'm betting it opens in your default browser and it is only when opened via the app that it opens in IE. If correct, that is because the developers call must be written that way and it is for them not to specify IE.
The second issue is also for the developers to resolve.

Airplane help with Webhelp and HTML Help
Hi. We are generating 2 outputs using Robohelp v.6.0: HTML
Help and WebHelp. Standalone they both work fine. The context
sensitive .chm works too. Problems are:
1.) the primary help (Webhelp) does not appear - there isn't
any error msg either.
2.) when an invalid url is used the secondary help file does
appear (HTML help). But this doesn't happen with the correct url of
the primary help - Webhelp
Isn't there supposed to be a reference to the mapping in the
<head> of each htm file?
Can anyone help on this topic? many thanks!First, move the styles from the form generator to the <head> of your document. Otherwise there is a possibility browsers could ignore the invalid code.
Then move your form div inside the banner div and set the attribute float:right; in your CSS for the form div. Then you should be good to go. -
WebHelp and Number of Files Generated
Hi,
Using RH 7.0 to build our WebHelp system. Is it really
necessary to take all the files that are outputted to the WebHelp
folder? I am checking these into a location for engineering to pick
up in their builds so that the context sensitive help works. I am
not even sure what 1/2 of these files are or what they are used
for.
I have been reading about RoboHelp Packager for Adobe AIR,
would this be something to look into to reduce file count?

Okay, now it is me that is confused. For starters, and just
to clarify, I suspect MEP45 was/is creating a single WebHelp target
with no Student/Admin stuff. Just basic WebHelp was what I was
assuming was being discussed.
Now on to your issue. How are you generating? Batch generate?
Are you using a merged setup? Conditional tagging? We need more
information to go on here.
The bottom line here is that many folks see the swarm of
WebHelp files and think that surely there has to be some way to put
it on a diet and slim it down a bit. But all those files are there
for a reason. Accommodating different browsers, different settings
within the same browsers, different versions of the same browser,
etc. While it would be possible to ferret out all the files that
aren't needed for your own situation and delete them, it would have
to be done each and every time you updated the help. From an
efficiency standpoint, it's simply better to consider all of them
necessary and adapt to the flow.

i'm looking into putting 3d content on the web.
i was thinking of using the 3d api to create an applet which showed a 3d product object which the user could then rotate and which i could load .wml objects (or some3d format) into the applet.
i know this is possible.
but i've read somewhere that in order for the user to use it they must have jre 1.2 and the java 3d extension installed. because java 3d needs java 1.2 VM to run (which i'mled to believe most browsers dont support).
my understanding is that most browsers at most support 1.1 vm which means that if i went ahead i would disenfranchise a large part of my audience (which i am not prepared to do)
the whole reason i decided to go through the java route was because i wanted 3d content on the web without having to have the user download a player in order to view it.
so my question is, assuming what i believe to be true is correct. is it possible to write the sort of 3d applet i want without using the 3d api, and thereby keeping my applet to 1.1 spec and therefore keep my audience?
i'm basically looking for a workaround. i want 3d content, i dont want the user to have to use a player.
any means of doing this i will do

if you wish you can email me direct at [email protected]The JRE 1.1 is very common because M$ uses this ancient version. But browserls like Opera and Netscape come together with newer versions of the JRE, at least 1.2 is used here.
I think there is no way to use J3D together with the JRE 1.1 - and it is not recommended to use this much too old java version generally. -
How to get PSD layout in Dreamweaver fixed to all resolutions and browsers
I designed a web layout in Photoshop. I sliced it and than used save for web option. I opened photoshop template in Dreamweaver but I can't figure out how to have it automatically adjust to different resolutions or monitors. When my resolution is set anywhere below 1152x864 the PSD template is too big when viewed in browser. I'm getting so frustrated. I've googled for hours and hours with no solution that worked.
To be blunt, what you want to do can't be done. There is no option, selection or setting that will turn a PS generated table based/sliced layout into a responsive design that changes with the browser.
Photoshop is great for making images, however the html it creates is horrible for anything other than a web page mock-up, basically something to show a client "this is how it will work, roughly". You should not use PS to create the html for your actual live website.
To create a responsive design requires an understanding of CSS in general and Media Queries specifically. Dreamweaver CS6 has some tools that can help, however they still require some knowledge of cascading stylesheets to make them work correctly across all browsers.

Sharepoint publishing - different options for Webhelp and HTML5
Hi all,
publishing HTML5 output to Sharepoint 2010 workes fine for me, I can select the path and enter a log-in. However, the publishing options for Webhelp apparently do not allow for user authentification. I can only enter a path and Robohelp always says that is is invalid.
Can someone provide a hint how I would proceed? Is it possible that Webhelp only supports Sharepoint 2007?
RobertI don't have access to either version of Sharepoint so this is a shot in the dark. Can you use the FTP option to publish to Sharepoint? That does have user authentication.

It still runs in IE 7.0, although I had to install FP 10.
Are there lines of code I need to get it to run in Firefox and Safari? Both tell me to install Version 10 of FP, but it is installed. Won't run in Vista or Mac in Firefox.

IWeb 08 and browsers other than Safari
My site works fine on Safari but I've had a check on Opera and Mozilla and some things are missing, for example the reflections on the images and the borders round the images? The mind boggles on what will be happening with internet explorer!! Any clues out there?

I can't, in good conscience, recommend any browser other than Safari. I have tried most of them and found them to be sad, pathetic imitations. I used to keep Firefox around for the occasional web site that wouldn't function properly with Safari but those sites have dwindled to almost nothing in the past year. I speculate that a combination of better, standards compliant coding by developers and the steady improvement of WebKit is the reason.
For whatever reason the majority of complaints about Safari compatibility seem to be coming from european users these days.
I assume you were using Firefox because of problems with Safari. Now you're having trouble with Firefox. That should be a red flag for you. Something is going on your individual system that needs fixing or attention. -
Three days ago I edited the text of one of the charities web site pages in Iweb.
Saved published site changes.
However changes didn't show after I visited the site using Chrome.
I then saved again and published entire site and visited the site again.
In Safari changes there but not in Chrome
Today three days later same thing, changes visible in Safari but NOT Chrome

Will the features of WebHelp and WebHelp Pro layouts ever be combined?
Why are they separate? I like the enhanced features of WebHelp Pro, but I lose other new and GREAT features of WebHelp.
I use the WebHelp Pro layout for the customization features like:
Conditional Build Expressions
Content selection (TOC, Index, Glossary, etc.)
Exclude unreferenced Topics and baggage files
I would like to also use WebHelp (not Pro) features like:
Turning off certain toolbar buttons when there is no content for them (i.e. Index, Glossary). I have customzed the skin, but am not able to delete these buttons from the navigation area. Turning them off in WHPro would be ideal.
Using Content Categories. I need to use this feature to keep the TOC pane from showing (great for mobile devices) and for offering specific navigational paths, but I would have to sacrifice the features of Pro to do. Namely, Excluding unreferenced topics and baggage files. Our client primarily uses the search feature instead of the TOC navigation. We can't have them "finding" unused or developmental content, so I have to use Pro -- unless there is a better solution.
Am I missing something here?

Sounds like you could really use a bit of RoboHelp training. I say that because you are unaware of why you would need RoboHelp Server, unaware that the "Pro" outputs are intended for use only with that output and the grand daddy of them all: unaware that most (if not all) of the features you cited are simple to achieve with the standard WebHelp output if you only know what and where to tweak things.
John and I are both Adobe certified instructors. Additionally, there are books on RoboHelp you may purchase that will help you learn how to effectively learn these features.

JRE versions and Browsers and Applets
Is there a way to assign a particular JRE version to a browser session through JavaScript or VBScript programatically so that I can run applets from different sources which need different JREs?
Basically I will have 2 links/buttons which will call two separate javascript methods to open two different browser windows to run two different applets running under different JREs
However when I start IE each 'session' of IE is assigned to one JRE, any way to overcome this?

I am sourcing html pages from multiple sites and the html/applet tag is generated by those websites.
They do have the applet tag pointing to proper class-id of the java plugin.
However, the problem is with IE one family(session) of browsers are attached to one version of JRE plugin.
Here 'session' means: you open a browser and from within that browser you do go from a link or javascript etc. to another browser they are in same 'session'
I am working on dynamically setting JRE plugin version to different browsers.

Topics show up as missing in project - but display in webhelp and TOC
Hi,
I have opened up a RH 8 project for the first time in RH 10. A few topics show up with a red 'X' on them, meaning, as far as I understand, that they're missing. I can't open these up to edit them, however, they show up OK in the generatet webhelp. So I'm wondering why RoboHelp is failing to find these files and how I can resolve this.
I found a similar thread: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/771421, but unlike that situation, my topics *are* showing up in the TOC.
When I look in the folder that holds the source topics, I see this topic there, and I can open the HTM file.
I've attached a screenshot of what I'm seeing in RH.
Any help is appreciated.The message is simply telling you what Rh has done with associated files. As long as it imported the file OK, that's the objective.
The CPD is a cache where Rh stores project information. It can be deleted via Windows Explorer or by telling Rh to always delete it on opening a project. That is done in Tools > Options.
Sometimes the cache gets mixed up and you have to delete it when Rh rebuilds it from other files.

Design Mode works with Flash, LiveView and Browsers Don't?
I am running on Dreamweaver CS5 in Code View...I have imported a flash video, which displays in design view, but will just keep loading in the actual browser and never start the video. It is running through an Apache localhost and is a PHP file...could that mess it up? I am also using jQuery with a bunch of hidden popup views, that work fine. What's wrong with my flash? Here is my source code to my flash video file:
