WebI or Crystal

Hi,
we are in situation where we client has agreed to go for either one reports WebI or Crystal. My question to you guys is which is the better one in terms of performance, customization, ease of development and compatibility with other systems.
Regards,
BOB

Hi,
customization -> Crystal Reports
easy to use -> Web Intelligence
performance -> Depends on the data source. What kind of sources do you have?
compatibility -> ? What do you mean? Youn can embed both WebI and Crystal Reports in other systems using openDocument or the available SDKs. There is no runtime SDK for WebI though (ie. you must always have a BOE installation if you want to view WebI reports).
Regards,
Stratos
PS:
WebI is normally used for ad-hoc reporting by normal business users.
CR is normally used for creating highly-formated standard reports with complex requirements regarding display and business logic.  A certain level of experience/training is required.

    Hi,
    WEBI and Crystal report build from BEX query returned empty report when we used external hierarchy 0PROFIT_CTR.  In BEX we don't have any problems with it.
    No authority check is perfomed on the hierarchy when we start the report in WEBI/Crystal. Only check on the hierarchy is performed when the root authorization is assigned to the user

  • Federated Portal - Issue running WebI and Crystal in Enterprise portal.

    Hi All,
    We have connected our BI portal to Enterprise Portal . The federation works fine for Bex 7.0 queries. But when we run WebI and Crystal Reports ...We get the following error
    Portal Runtime Error
    An exception occurred while processing your request
    Exception id: 05:20_30/03/10_0027_1281950
    See the details for the exception ID in the log file.
    We looked in the log file and this is what we see.

    Others have posted the same question in forum but there is no answer. Could any of you resolve this issue??

  • Merits and Demerits of WEBI and Crystal reports!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Dear Experts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    I came up with many documents, but i cannot able to find the exact merits and demerits over WebI and Crystal Reports.
    Experts can u people help me out in this regards,
    Atleast the comparison between them.
    Regards,

    What angle are you coming at this from?
    Are you talking about in terms of replacing Deski?
    Or as a first reporting tool to learn?
    If you're moving away from Deski, I'd personally go for Webi. Very small amount of learning required to move from one to the other. It's also much easier to pick up and start working with.

  • BusinessObject 4.0 API to get SQL statement from webi or crystal report

    Hello,
    Need your help.... could you confirm whether BusinessObjects 4.0 provides any SDK, API or Web Service to get physical SQL statement from the webi or crystal reports file?
    If so, could you provide name of package, class and method?
    If I am not wrong, there is an SDK in v3.0 that allows to extract the SQL. But I am reading a lot on these forums that lot of SDK classes and functions are deprecated / removed in v4.0.
    Thanks for your help.
    Omer

    For Crystal Reports in BI 4.0 to retrieve the SQL query you can use Report Application Server SDK. Here is a code snippet that retrieves the SQL statement.
    //oInfoObjectReport is of type IInfoObject corresponding to the crystal report.
    ReportClientDocument reportClientDoc = reportAppFactory.openDocument(oInfoObjectReport, 0, Locale.ENGLISH);
            //for all crystal reports
            GroupPath grpPath = new GroupPath();
            //get CR SQL query string
            String reportSQL=reportClientDoc.getRowsetController().getSQLStatement(grpPath,null);
            System.out.println("report SQL String: "+reportSQL);
            //for report whose datasource is command object:
            Tables tables = reportClientDoc.getDatabaseController().getDatabase().getTables();
            for (int i = 0; i < tables.size(); i++)
             ITable table = tables.getTable(i);
             ICommandTable ic= (ICommandTable) table;
             //Command can be obtained from the report using getCommandObject() method
             //get CR SQL query string
             String SQLText=ic.getCommandText();
             System.out.println("SQLText_"+i+": "+SQLText);

  • Embedding WebI and Crystal reports on a web page

    Hi,
    I'm new to BO, so please bear with me. I've also posted this to the .NET-side, so sorry if you've seen this post before.
    We have a project where we will need to embed WebI and Crystal reports on a web page, i.e. we want the people who access the web page to get the reports (mainly graphs) as embedded content on the web page without any controls and other clutter.
    Is this possible and what's the correct way of doing this?
    Thanks,
    Carl

    Hi,
    Thanks for the help!
    We still face the original problem, though. I.e. with openDocoument we get the report, controls, tab selections, scroll bars etc. What we actually would like is to get just the contents of a report.
    Is there any way of doing it? We're not afraid of coding, we have good developers. Or do we need to schedule report creation to some format (e.g. PDF) and then load the PDF to the web page?
    Basicaly it's more important to get this working for WebI reports as we can redo almost all reports from Crystal to WebI. Of course we are happy to find a resolution for both cases.

  • Open Doc URL with parameter in BI 4.0 to open Webi and Crystal report

    Hi Experts ,
    Has any one experienced the open doc URL to open the report and to pass the parameter to the new report .
    I am well aware of the syntax of passing the parameter and use to work perfectly fine with XI 3.1 but its giving me griefs in BI 4.0 environment .
    In the new report i am just trying to pass the Fiscal year as a parameter with the url i can open the report but it does not accept the value being passed with the url so i have to renter the values again .
    I am using BO 4.0 SP2 Patch 6 and trying to intact with crystal and webi report   built on top of BEx query with the fiscal year parameter defined in BEx query level .
    Any comment on this will be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Vibhav

    Hi Nakul,
    I am not using the user response to get the value i tested it in Crystal Enterprise environment i tired passing the following syntax
    http://.../OpenDocument/opendoc/openDocument.jsp?sIDType=CUID&iDocID=...&lsSFiscal%Year%(Single%Value%Entry,%Required)={?0P_FYEAR}
    {?0P_FYEAR}  this is a variable comming form BEx query into Crystal i tired to use it and pass it to other report but i cannot pass it i have tried to pass the hardcoded value still i see the paramater screen and have to enter the value again.
    I am not sure if anyone has tested this functionality in BI 4.0 environment .
    Thanks,
    Vibhav

  • Web printing crystal report hangs on report.PrintOptions.PrinterName

    Hello,
    I have a report web page that displays a crystal report.  I have added a modal popup to allow them to select their printers.  When I go to print the report is hangs on the line of rpt.PrintOptions.PrinterName = li.Text.  The printer names are added to the list box using a Java applet.
    Here is the Sub it is running.
        Public Sub PrintReports()
            rpt = CType(Session("rpt"), ReportDocument)
            For Each li As ListItem In Me.lbPrinters.Items
                If li.Selected AndAlso li.Text <> "" Then
                    rpt.PrintOptions.PrinterName = li.Text
                    rpt.PrintOptions.PrinterDuplex = CType(Me.cboDuplex.SelectedItem.Value, CrystalDecisions.Shared.PrinterDuplex)
                    rpt.PrintToPrinter(CInt(Me.txtNumOfCopies.Text), True, CInt(Me.txtPageStartRange.Text), CInt(Me.txtPageRangeEnd.Text))
                End If
            Next
            Me.mpePrint.Hide()
        End Sub
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Patrick

    Sounds like you're trying to implement server side printing in your app. Which is fine, except the CR ActiveX print is client side printing. Just in case you're interested, the way to enable activeX print is to go to the property of the CR viewer and find "PrintMode". It will more than likely be defaulted to PDF. Change that to ActiveX.
    Now, back to the issue. This may still be a matter of permissions - essentially what Adam was after. Probably the easiest way to determine that is to use the [Process Monitor|http://technet.microsoft.com/en-ca/sysinternals/bb896645.aspx] utility. Once you have the log, search it for "Access Denied" messages.

  • Not able to schedule Webi and Crystal reports in Infoview

    Hi All,
    We are using Business Objects XI 3.1.
    I am not able to schedule reports in Infoview irrespective of the report type.
    The Webi report throws the error "Bad Request(Invalid URL)" when I hit on the Format Destination section.
    The Crystal report without prompt hangs when I hit schedule button and the report with prompt throws the error "An error has occurred:Invalid postback or callback argument."
    Recently we installed the Fixpack 1.2 for XI 3.1.
    Thanks in Advance
    Umesh

    Hi Kilic,
    You mean to say re-install the Java version.
    Also there is issue in IIS Server. It always encounters a problem and stops. I have to restart the IIS Server. How to deal with these issues? Very confused

  • Best practice for infoview and which folder to save webi or crystal reports

    All,
    I was wondering what are your thought about the following question.Imagine you have a customer using at the same time webi reports and also crystal reports against BW.
    The thing is that he is transporting the crystal report thru SAP using the rsadmin transaction to manage his crystal reports, but also use the SAP transport to move them to PROD .As far as webi, he is using the import wizard to move them to PROD. \
    As you know the crystal reports will end up into an SAP folder .. something that is such as SAP/(description of the menu role).
    Well webi reports happen to be inside the public folder.
    The question was .. what would be the best practice
    1 u2013 store all your crystal reports against BW in the SAP menu roles as it is ending up thru the SAP transport and have the webi reports inside the public folder ?
    2 u2013 Copy your webi reports from the public folder to the SAP /Menu role folder where my crystal reports are ?
    3 u2013 copy your crystal reports from the SAP/(menu role folder) to the Public folder ?
    Let me know what is your feeling as best practice
    Thank you
    Philippe

    Just a hint:
    The path SAP/2.0 is not mandatory. You can configure the SAP BW publisher on the BW side (transaction /CRYSTAL/RPTADMIN) so that your reports will be stored in another folder on the BOE side. Please note that the addition of the role name in the path cannot be overrided.

  • Calender button doesn't work in web published crystal report

    Post Author: hbadr_14
    CA Forum: General
    Dear all  I designed a report that prompt the user for dates. when i run the report from crystal report the prompt window contain a calender button where i can select the date.   The problem appears after i publish the report on the crystal Enterprise, when i open the report the calender button dosen't pop up the calender so that i cannot supply the required date by my report.

    I'm having similar trouble: here is the web link I am attempting to use. The Column Campaign."Campaign Name" has a filter for IS PROMPTED. One trouble I'm having is that I need to use the Combined Analyses feature to achieve the report I need; but I added a filter to all three reports used in the combined analysis.

  • Web based Crystal Report not appearing

    Hi
    Hope this hasn't been asked before, had a look in the forum but couldn't find it specifically.
    I am developing a web application with one CR in it.
    VS 2010 + CR for VS installed on development machine.
    The development environment is all fine, works a treat. The problems started when I tried shipping to our staging environment, and also a test area on our live server.
    Our live web server is running Windows Server 2008 Web edition R2 with dotnet V4 x86 runtime installed.
    After overcoming 'Type Initializer' error, 'log4net.dll' error and 'LoadReport' error on the live server, the live server now just displays a blank page.
    When I had this problem on the staging server I found that this was caused by the 'aspnet_client\system_web\4_0_30319\crystalreportviewers13' folder not existing or in the right place. It works on the staging server when I'm browsing using http://localhost etc.
    Things I have done to get the report working on the live server:
    1. Install CR Runtime 32bit V13
    2. Set security settings on C:\Windows\Temp to allow web user (actually set to 'Everyone' until it's all working properly) read/write access
    3. Moved  folder 'aspnet_client\system_web\4_0_30319\crystalreportviewers13' to the application folder and the www root folder (have tried in various places also)
    I have to say that the report is displayed when I'm on the live web server and browse using http://localhost etc., and I can repeat the problem by moving the crystalreportviewers13 folder out of where it should be.
    After getting all this done over the past 2 DAYS I believe that the problem lies with the location of the 'crystalreportviewers13' folder. Although it could be something else.
    Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers
    Julian

    OK, apologies. posted in haste!
    It seems that the report is working, it's just the browser I was viewing it from simply doesn't display it. No idea why yet, but not too worried as all other machines I try it on, it works.
    A little annoyed however at the amount of time I've wasted trying to get this working. Is it documented anywhere for instance that C:\Windows\Temp needs special privileges set up to make a web crystal report work?
    Anyway, please ignore this, and the last post!
    Cheers
    Julian

  • Bex Query Variable error in Webi and Crystal for Enterprise

    Hi,
    We just upgrade to BOBJ 4.1 SP2 and BW7.4 SP5
    I am creating a webi report based on a BEx query. There is Variable on Period/Fiscal Year from BEX side(Mandatory prompt) when I try to create a Webi or Cyrstal for Enterprise report the below error pops up. Other Bex queries work correctly. Can it be the values in the variable the following values exist when execute from Bex i.e. 001.2012; Period 2013
    Is the SAP Note : 1611185 relevant for 4.1 SP2
    Error:
    com.businessobjects.sdk.core.server.CommunicationException$UnexpectedServerException: Termination message sent
    ABEND DBMAN (257): SQL Error: INTERNAL_ERROR
      MSGV1: INTERNAL_ERROR
    Is this True for BOBj4.1 SP2?
    http://scn.sap.com/thread/3362312
    Selection range variables are not fully supported in Crystal Reports for Enterprise.

    Thanks Henry! I was looking for this confirmation that it is a limitation of Webi and I'm not missing something.

    It is not possible to set Authorization variables as mandatory. They are set to "optional" and cannot be changed (BEx limitation).

  • Help requested on WEBI and Crystal Reports

    Hi All,
    1. Our Sys Admin has installed Business Objects XI Enterprise Server on the Corporate Development Server. The objective is to develop few WEBI objects and Crystal Reports and deploy on the Development Server for further testing. What developer tools I need on my local system to develop WEBI Objects and Crystal Reports?
    2. For crystal reports is there a need to develop universe, or is it possible to fetch from the database directly if the DB meets all the data needs?
    Thanks in advance
    Sunny

    Hi gudurusk,
    For CR creation the you need Crystal Reports. Thats a Report developing Tool which needs to be installed local on your Desktop PC
    WebI is a Java based Reporting Tool. So you create your Reports in a Web Browser. You LogIn to InfoView and click New -> Web Intelligence Document and start.
    Crystal can do both. It can report of a Universe and can by directly connected to your DB.

    -Seb.
