Weblink behavior Adobe Reader vs. Acrobat Professional

I have a PDF that contains a link to a web site. If the PDF is opened in Adobe Reader (7.0.0) and the machine has IE7 the link works whether or not IE7 is already open. If the document is opened in Acrobat Professional (7.0.9) and the machine has IE7 the link only works if IE7 is already open, if IE7 isn't already open nothing happens. Right clicking and selecting Open Weblink in Browser doesnt do anything either. Is there a way to setup the PDF to ensure it will open IE7 if it isn't already open? If so how do I do that?
Thanks,
Ann.

There are 2 issues here (this question is asked a LOT !!!)
When Acrobat or Reader are opened and the PDF is closed, the program stays running in the background, so the next time a PDF is opened the "current" program is used
There also seems (I think) to be a difference/problem in the way the Windoze Registry handles file associations, so the program you WANT is not always the program that is USED to open a given file
You might use the forum search, looking for something like
acrobat reader file assocation
To see if one of the MANY previous discussions has a solution

  • PDFs look different in Adobe reader and Acrobat professional compared to the built in PDF viewer on windows 8

    Hi there,
I have been trying to narrow down an issue we have been having for some time in printing PDF files and finding that they look different on paper compared to screen.  Up until today our big KIP plotter got the blame, but as I have been collecting notes on a little windows 8 tablet I noted that PDFs opened in the windows PDF viewer have the same visual defects as the printouts.  My example today is that on a CAD drawing there is a small box/frame with a number in their, I tried printing and the frame was completely blacked out.  As a test I tried saving the PDF as a TIFF file from Adobe Acrobat professional and this file had the same fault as the printed copy.  When I open it in the windows 8 pdf viewer I can see that there is a shading within this box that does not show on Adobe Reader (latest version 11.0.10.32), the adobe reader and acrobat pro version both show a white background to the box.  We have been having lots of issues with sections being missing from drawings and overly feint lines.
I am not sure where to start trying to narrow down why we are getting different results in different PDF readers.  Is there anyone who maybe able to point me in the right direction?  It almost feels like the shading or colour density is not being consistent when PDFs are being opened in different packages.
    Thanks in advance
    Andy

Some PDF viewers comply with the PDF ISO Standard (ISO 32000) "just enough" while others (such as Adobe's) fully comply.
As with anything there's a cost to using anything that comes from a "just enough" approach.
    Be well...

  • Same pdf is different in adobe reader en acrobat professional

    Hello,
I have a slight problem with a PDF file.
    I have one pdf.
When I open this pdf within Adobe Reader, everything looks fine, when i open exact the same PDF with acrobat professional, something weird is happening.
    The font't are changed.
Also, some of the text is in italic.
I hope anyone can give me a solution to solve this issue.
Excuse me for my bad English, i'm from Belgium, so English is not my foreign language.
    Thanks in advance.
    Kevin

    Hello,
Yes i did check the preferences and from here they are the same.
But, correct me if I'm wrong, but i thought you cannot change the font type in Adobe itself.
Normaly i would guess, i should show the pdf how it was created.
If not, do yuo know which preference I have to look at?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Adobe Reader and Acrobat Pro updates for 11.0.10 being pushed out through SolarWinds Patch Manager are not being recognized as applicable.

I am trying to update our Adobe Reader and Acrobat Pro to 11.0.10 using the default MSP packages with SolarWinds Patch Manager.  All of the systems keep reporting as 'NOT APPLICABLE'.  All of the workstations have Reader11.0.09, with about 10% still on 11.0.08 (due to the fact that the reader 11.0.09 package only patched about 2/3 of the systems).  All systems that have Acrobat Pro are 11.0.09.
In SolarWinds I am using the "Adobe Systems, Inc. Packages" node.
    Adobe Systems Acrobat 11 Catalog
    Adobe Systems Reader 11 Catalog
and the SW Patch Manager downloads the msp's straight from Adobe.
I have checked the msp's manually and they will update at least back to 11.0.07 in Reader, and 11.0.0 in Acrobat Pro. (I had an old stand alone system that still had Reader 11.0.07, and I did a new install of Pro and went straight to update 11.0.10)
The SolarWinds Tech said, "Okay. That content is produced by Adobe. Any questions concerning applicability logic or diagnosing why a package reports as NotApplicable when that's not expected would need to be directed to Adobe, as they are solely responsible for that content and its behavior".
I am new to SolarWinds Patch Manager, and any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like you are attempting to use the SCUP catalogs outside of the MS solution.  I can almost guarantee you that Adobe didn't test it if it's not referenced in the ETK:  11   SCCM-SCUP — Enterprise Administration Guide
That being said there "should" be logging available in any deployment solution.   Since I am not familiar with Solar-Winds particular solution I can't say if it logs errors and how verbose those logs might be.    If you have logs then post the output and the forum members "might" be able to assist you.

Did you do that: launch the standalone Reader (not the browser plugin) and accept the EULA?

    Welcome to our community, Vinesh
Firstly, I'm thinking you have wandered into the wrong
community. You are asking a question about Acrobat and this
community is focused on Adobe Captivate. If you want to ask further
questions about Acrobat, you should consider asking in the Acrobat
community. You may do so by clicking the link below:
    Click
here to visit the Acrobat community
Now for the gist of what you asked. There is a huge
difference between Acrobat Reader and Acrobat. One uses Acrobat as
the application used to create content that is later viewed by
someone with the basic Acrobat reader. The reader is a free
download for all. You have to purchase Acrobat in order to create
content that you produce for the reader to present.
Hopefully that makes a bit of sense. If not, try posting the
same question over in the Acrobat forums and see what someone
    replies with.
    Cheers... Rick

Please do not type all uppercase, as it is rather hard to read!
Do you use Adobe AIR?  If not, go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall it, then try the Adobe Reader installation again.
If it still fails, please state if you already have Adobe Reader installed, and what version, as well as what version you are trying to install.

  • Auto-Complete bugs in Adobe Reader X / Acrobat X

When I open a PDF that has fillable forms, and auto-complete is enabled, it does a terrible job of managing it's suggestions and how it handles my desire to 'type through' the suggestions that it's offering.
To test this, you'll need a PDF with multiple fillable form fields.  it seems to have the hardest time with numerical data.  Spend a couple minutes entering in a lot of numerical data into the fields.  Delete some of it, put in different numbers, and eventually you'll see what I'm talking about.  I suggest that, because in some cases I'm able to reproduce it immediately, and in others it takes a few tries or a few different PDFs.  If you have typed in an address, say '1234 main', then in a later field, type in a zip code of '12345', then in yet another field start typing 12345 then hit the spacebar, it autofills "12345main".  Note how 12345main does not match anything I previously entered, but the auto-complete database thinks that it does.  The 'ain' part of "12345main" stays highlighted, like that's what it's now suggesting.  If you backspace back so that it shows "12345" again, and then hit space, it will auto-fill to '12345main' again.  I can't simply 'Type through' thie suggestion, because it leaves the 'm' there.
What's odd, is that for the sake of this demonstration, you type in multiple items that begin with 1234, then enter '1234 ' (note the space) on another field, it actually won't suggest to you the items you previously entered that begin with 1234 .  Example:  in 3 fields, type in  1234 Main St,  1234 Downtown Rd., and then in the 3rd field start type 1234 followed by space. You'd think you'd be offered suggestions by Auto-complete that contain both 1234 Main St. and 1234 Downtown Rd, but you don't.  If you type something like '12345' now, you'll be back to the problem i outlined above where it automatically selects an item from the list and grabs an unwanted letter from the first word after the space.  Interestingly enough, if you keep typing '1234 Ma' for example, you still don't see the Auto-complete suggestions unless you start hitting the 'Backspace' key, at which point the proper suggestions are displayed.
For our users that send out a lot of correspondence to clients, this is a huge inconvenience.  The only workaround is to completely disable the Auto-complete option under 'Forms'.  If they do not, then they can end up with incorrect information going out to cilents, and some of them have sent printed forms to cilents containing characters that didn't make sense or numerical data that was not correct because it had picked up unwanted characters from auto-complete.
    Additional information:
I'm able to duplicate this problem on multiple workstations.
    OS: Windows 7 32-bit Enterprise SP1, Windows XP 32-bit Professional SP3
I'm able to duplicate the problem  with Adobe Reader X and Adobe Acrobat X
The problem also occurs whether I select either 'Advanced' or 'Basic' for the Auto-Complete setting

  • Acrobat Reader versus Acrobat Professional or Standard

When I use Safari and I want to open my PDF outside the Browser, how does Safari choose between Acrobat Reader, Professional or Standard?
For example: I have Acrobat Reader 7 and Professional 7 installed on my G5 (10.4.4). I have changed the preferences in Acrobat Reader and Professional to open outside the Browser. How does it make it's decision? I could not find a preference in Safari to choose which one I wanted.
I'm sure it is somewhere, I just can't find it.
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

    Hi Julia
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
You don't need to use Reader if you have Adobe Professional 7 installed. Professional allows you to read, create, or edit PDF files. With Reader you can only "read" the PDF. I suggest "uninstalling" Reader by moving the app. to your trash.

  • Problem with Adobe Reader vs Acrobat on my Macbook Air

A question that is addressed in the forum but the answers (so far) have not worked for me: I just switched to a Macbook Air (from a standard Macbook Pro) and suddenly cannot open PDF files from the internet in Adobe Reader. Instead, I am instructed to sign the user agreement for Adobe Acrobat, which I have never actually purchased and do not have installed on my computer. Per suggestions from earlier threads and from the Adobe help site, I have attempted these steps:
In the Finder, select a PDF, and choose File > Get Info.
Click the arrow next to Open With to expose the product menu.
Choose either Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Reader from the application menu.
It seems simple enough, but when I open a PDF and click on File, there is no "Get info" option. Nor when I double click on the document itself, is there a "get info" option. The closest thing I see is "properties" which does not take me to the desired dialogue box. So my question is, how to I find "get info," which will presumably take me to the solution?

    Hello,
Please try to download the new installer from this location and see if that works -Adobe - Adobe Reader download - All versions

  • I'm trying to download the latest version of firefox. I get a pop up window that asks me what to open it with. I've tried adobe reader 9, acrobate reader 5, and real player. None work

OK, I'll take you through what happens. When I click download firefox 4 I get a pop up window that asks "what should Firefox do with this file?"
    Below I have two choices:
    _Open with (choose)
    _Save File
So I go to choose and pick an application.
So I choose Acrobate Reader 5.0. Acrobate gives me a popup that says "Acrobat could not open firefox 4.0-4.dmg because it is either not a supported file type or because the fire has been corrupted....
So I try download again (I should point out that I am currently running Firefox 3.6.16) The popup that asks me to choose a file to open firefox 4.0.dmg pops up again.
So I choose Adobe Reader 9. Nothing happens. So I cancel.
So what application should I go to to open Firefox 4.0.dmg
