  • What's the deal with dual processors???

The whole dual processor thing has been bugging me for some time now. If I have a dual 500mhz processor, is it the same as a 1.0ghz processor, worse than one, better than one?! Are there other factors at play? In my limited scope, if you had a dual 500, 533, whatever, it would be the same as a single 1.0ghz - and yet these dual processors are priced much cheaper. I really am at a loss as to how computers do their processing, and how to compare single processor G4's and dual processor G4's when making a purchase.
    Insight would be greatly appreciated!

And you shouldn't forget, the future is multiprocessors. There is a limit to miniturization, and the solution seems to be multiplication. So operating systems and applications are increasingly going to be multiprocessor-aware. Maybe a perfect example is the upcoming MacOS release, Snowleopard. Apparently, there will be almost no cosmetic changes. The changes will essentially be 'under-the-hood'. And you can bet, that some of those changes will be increased efficiency with respect to multiple processors.
So what's the deal with airplane peanu...err, dual processors?
The advantage, theoretically is, having more workers to do the work. Your 1ghz processor is like a worker who can lift 100kg, and your 500mhz are like workers who can lift 50kg each.
So where's the advantage? If you have a farm with 40 kg hay bales in the field that you need to pick up, your better off with two workers than one right? Or 8 workers in the case of a 8-core MacPro. So an multiprocessor-aware operating system, doles out the work much more efficiently, spreading the tasks around, or spreading a single task around in pieces (if the app is so written).
You've heard of render farms? The multiple computers used to render the frames of animated movies? Its the same principle. Having computer 1 render the first 1000 frames and computer 2 the next, the project gets done within a lifetime. If they had had only one computer, ToyStory would still not be finished.
Its the future. Just wait till the end of this year for example. Nehalem chips will be sporting even more processors.

  • Weblogic 6.0 SP2 with JDK1.3 as a Win2kPro Service Fails

I have installed the weblogic server 6.0 with sp2 with the intergrated jdk1.3.0. Everything seems to be fine when I manually run it. Bun whenever I am trying to run as a win2k service it fails. To be more specific whenever I am trying to start the service I can can see in the services list that the service is running. After about 10 secs when I refresh the services list the weblogic service is stopped. My first thought was that I had to do something with the password option, I checked it and I corrected it but the problem still exists.

  • Replace powermac mdd single 1ghz processor with dual processor

I want to know if i can if put a dual 1.25 or 1.42 ghz processor in my single processor machine. will it work because what i understand is that i have the slower bus speed of 133 and the dual processor machines have 167. will that matter?

Aftermarket processor upgrades would have to be specific to the Mirrored Drive Doors model. The CPUs for earlier models will not work. So you would have to follow the recommendations of each manufacturer. Maybe someone who has added one can chime in with a recommendation. Otherwise, try:

    Hi,
Generally this type of exception raised by a class or the serialization runtime when a class may not be serialized. The argument should be the name of the class.
You might be forgot to implement the serializable interface for the class in struts frame work.
    check it properly.

  • Are there large performance gains in labview with a dual processor?

I have an application that is very cpu intensive using 4 ni6052e's with lots of data aquisition going on. Does anyone have experience with dual processors and labview? What processors? What OS? What are the complications to switching?

You might be interested in the following documents:
Using LabVIEW to Create Multithreaded Applications for Maximum Performance and Reliability
    Optimizing Test with Multiprocessor Machines
    LabVIEW and Hyperthreading
You'll want to look at multithreading along with multiprocessing. On multiple processor systems, multithreading is almost always beneficial, because it allows for each multiple i
ntensive threads to run simultaneously. However, it is the operating system's responsibility to schedule threads on the processors, and may not always schedule the threads of your application on separate processors.
On either single or multiple processor systems, there is often a benefit if you are sharing time between CPU-intensive threads and I/O-intensive threads. While one thread is reading or writing to the network (or GPIB, or hard drive, or DAQ device) other CPU-intensive threads can keep running. In a single-threaded system, the CPU would sit idle at times, waiting for the I/O to complete.
    Hope this helps.

I was wondering if Photoshop Elements 7 will run on a laptop Acer Timeline with dual processor with 1.4Ghz.
    Thanks for informing me.
    Kind regards

  • Dual processors is it worth the money?

I’m about to build a new PC to run PS5 Extended and wanted to know does PS run significantly faster with dual processors, or if anyone has tried it?

There are some things that will spread out to use as many processor cores as are available, so the short answer is yes.  I have an 8 core system, and converting a lot of raw files with the 64 bit Camera Raw spreads its work out pretty well across all the cores.  Also, some plug-ins, for example Perfect Resize 7 and the ones I sell will multithread and make use of more cores if you've got 'em.  Look for processors with big on-chip cache to help offload the memory buss.
Not sure what you're looking to build, but the following thread, which describes how I put my system together for a pretty reasonable price, might give you some ideas...

  • DI server - Licencing in Dual processor

    Hi all,
    We have the next configuration:
-. 1 server with dual processor ( tecnology Intel Core Duo ). For this configuration, the DI server need 1 or 2 licences ?
-. If the answer is 2 licences, how many professional users are necessary to access B1 database? 1 or 2.
    thanks

    Hi Humberto,
I am not sure whether this forum is the place for these questions, but here are the answers:
    - the first question is answered in SAP Note no. 890591 - and it is "2"
    - the second question is phrased a bit imprecisely from what I understand:
      - to my knowledge (but this may have changed; again this may not be the right forum for these questions) the minimum number of Prof. users that need to be ordered is 2 for any "Installation". However I think you will need at least 1 user to do all the administrative tasks. Please check the list in the lincesing guide and note that any user is assumed to have "Add-On ..." license. That's why any user can add a BP even though not having been assigned any B1 license!
Please note that authorizations are not directly related to licenses!
    HTH,
    Frank

  • Dual  processors are they worth it?

I’m about to build a new PC for PS5 extended and wanted to know if Photoshop will run significantly faster with dual  processors? Anyone tried this?

This isn't the Photoshop forum, in spite of the name, but yes dual processors is better. More than 2 is even more better. Photoshop runs significantly better with more. So does Lightroom.

  • Single or Dual Processors for Tuxedo and/or weblogic 8.1?

We run Tools 8.44 and 8.20 and double checking to see if either Weblogic (8.1) or Tuxedo (8.1) would utilize a dual processor environment? We run these on Windows 2003 Server.
    Appreciate inisght.

Yep its all in the cache, and the L3 makes all the difference.
I remember when I was shopping for my upgrade, Gigadesign had two different models of CPU's, the (brand new at the time) single and dual 7447's which went up to a dual 1.8 and the older pre-Freescale models (cant remember the model number maybe it was indeed the 7455B??) that maxed out with a dual 1.4..
I remember reading benchmarks (and quite a bit at XLR8yourmac.com) about the older dual 1.4's being on about the same level as the dual 1.6 and 1.7 7447 cpus.. This was all down to the 1.4 having L3 cache on each cpu. The 7447 had double the L2 like the 7448 but no L3.. I didnt really care much since they were relatively the same benchmark, but I went with the dual 1.7 7447 anyways just because the numbers were higher..
And funny enough, the CPU never ran stable at 1.7, my Mac would crash and kernel panic left and right. I couldnt get any response back from their tech support (I think it was one guy that ran the whole thing) about adjusting the voltage on it, so it spent its entire lifetime in my G4 as a dual 1.67. Not too big of a difference but I couldve saved some money just flat out buying a 1.6 instead of the 1.7, and wouldve saved even more had I just listened and bought the dual 1.4 with L3...
John with a G4 - no problem at all hehe! Dont get me wrong I loved my G4 and it served me well for just about 10 years before it 'died' on me.. But after getting the late-2005 dual core G5 man oh man I wish I wouldve done it waaaaaaaaaay sooner!

  • How to use Real time execution trace toolkit with Dual-core processor??

    hi there
    the situation as follows:
i have a computer (PC and Laptop) types with Dual-core processors, and am trying to do simulation using Multi-core technology and based on different simulation scenarios...starting from sequantial processing,.......Piple lining processing strategy. so that i can differentiate the time delay between those types of processing based on (Using 1 processor then dual-core processor Computers)
my question is: As i read through Ni's white papers i saw many notes refer to Real-time execution trace toolkit to investigate the (processing-time , etc) of multi-core processors in processing diffenent algorithms. My algorithms are to be run on 1 computer with dual-core processor BUT, not in real time environments, that is ( No hardware to be connected to my pc) only algorithms running on my pc....
So, is it possible to use Real time execution trace toolkit  or anyother tools in LabVIEW to show processing-delays and/or anyother timing critical issues without using my application for  real- time hardware.???
in other words: how to use Real time execution trace toolkit  in non-hardware and/or real-time scenarios???
    please help me in this.
Any suggestion, comments, feedback.....is absolutely highly appreciated
    thanks a lot in advance
    Labview Lover

    Hey,
The Realtime Execution Trace Toolkit only works for NI RT Targets.
But you can use the Desktop Execution Trace Toolkit, just search for it under ni.com.
