Weblogic Error on settings update & deployments: FileNotFound config_bak

Hiyas,
I am having a problem with WebLogic 10.3 where I keep getting the following error message when trying to deploy applications or update configurations in the console:
An error occurred during activation of changes, please see the log for details.
[Management:141191]The prepare phase of the configuration update failed with an exception:
java.io.IOException: java.io.FileNotFoundException: /opt/bea/user_projects/domains/base_domain/servers/domain_bak/config_bak/config.xml (No such file or directory)
The deployment has been successfully installed.
I seem to have the following directory instead which is empty:
\[weblogic@tabitha domain_bak\]$ pwd
/opt/bea/user_projects/domains/base_domain/servers/domain_bak
\[weblogic@tabitha domain_bak\]$ ls -l
total 4
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 2009-07-09 14:18 config_prev
Why are two different directories being searched for? Also, should this directory really be owned by root instead of the weblogic user? I am not sure how this is happening either. (the only thing I can figure is that the nodemanager is running as root as it is set to start at system boot with a script in /etc/init.d)
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

First, the script that is used to start nodemanager ( in /etc/init ) should be running nodemanager as the same weblogic user instead of root. It looks like you're running nm as root while running the weblogic admin server as "weblogic". Fixing that would mean stopping the mgd server and nodemanager, changing the ownership of the entire domain directory tree, and then making sure that node manager always starts as your weblogic user, then restarting nm + mgd server.
