Weblogic: load balancing and RAC contention
I cannot locate any useful documentation on this: I am trying to find the optimal configuration to allow an Weblogic Application server to load balance to RAC.
I see high numbers of v$sqlstats.clwait_delta for sessions connected from weblogic servers; typically from 25-95% over the overall statement execution time.
Configuration is a three node RAC 10.2.0.4 on Linux; with and eight node weblogic cluster connected using about 150 sessions (equally divided between the rac nodes), hosting a number of applications. They use "Least Connections" load balancing which means any thread(/connection) could be used next. The weblogic sessions connect to a RAC service that is configured with LOAD_BALANCE=YES.
I suspect that contention is caused by behaviour such as
- insert on one node, then immediately query back on another node
- inserts to indexed tables being distributed across all three nodes.
There is too much going on here, and I want to simplify the configuration to eliminate contention for the same data blocks across nodes - this will likely mean new database services configured with LOAD_BALANCE=NO and some form of application partitioning on the weblogic servers. There are other load balancing schemes available for weblogic; but none seem designed to work well with rac.
Is there any best practice documentation available to configure weblogic on RAC (as opposed to single-instance, which doesnt have any such contention issues).
Any pointers appreciated!

The only way to configure load balancing and transparent failover in RAC 11 g R2 is using the clauses LOAD_BALANCING and FAILOVER on the tnsnames.ora of application server. Is that correct?If the database is admin-managed, I shall suggest that rather than playing with the remote_listener parameter , set one service as preferred for one instance.For the other service, let it be preferred on both the nodes. The service with just one instance as Preferred won't be able to use loab-balancing as there is just one instance available for its disposal.

Advantages of using a webserver inbetween a load balancer and application servers
I am building out a new weblogic domain.
I am wondering which one of these configuration to go with:
1. Load balancer > weblogic servers
2. Load balancer > web server > weblogic servers
Could someone tell me what are the specific advantages of having web servers inbetween a load balancer and application servers (besides caching static data content and acting as a proxy)?

SriniOther than hosting the static content, nothing much really. We have our load balancer go straight to WL for applications without static content and route to web server if there is static content. Easy enough to do it both ways, best of both worlds.

Load distribution is handled by the message server (there is one message server in an SAP System). When a user logs on, the message server assigns him or her to the application server that currently has the <b>smallest load</b>.
Well now you can understand that we use load balancing for better performance by distributing the work to different processes to balance or maintain the work load in SAP system.

Load balancing and RFC problem

I have a problem regarding load balancing and RFC's. We use the follow function in librfc32.dll (from VB6) for RFC calls: RfcOpenExt It's working fine no problem, but from now on we will have to use the this funcion due to load balancing: RfcOpenExtV3
The only difference between the two functions is the parameters. RfcOpenExtV3 has 5 additional parameters:
intLoadBalance1, strLbHost1, strLbSysName1, strLbGroup1, intSapGui1
I asked our tech guys for the details so that I can set up the parameters (double check everything) and the RfcOpenExtV3 doesn't working. Return value is zero.
Have somebody faced with this issue before?

Load Balancing and WLS primary server offset
I've got a load balancer in front of my WLS cluster, and I'm trying to
set up load balancing based on WLS clustering. What I need to know to
do this is the offset within the cookie that's responsible for
determining which machine within the cluster to direct to.
Any idea how I can get this information?

In Memory session replication doesn't work without our plugins. I will have to
do little bit of investigation to figure out if other persistence mechanism's
would work without our plugins if you are interested in them. I have to remind
you though that other types of persistence mechanism's we support are slower
compared to in memory session replication.

Currently none. We are taking steps to make the plugin's and cluster more
robust, we currently don't have any plans to work with other 3rd party vendors.

This information is saved in the cookie. But I wouldn't count that, as we
have plans to change this. I cannot give your more details.

Load Balancing and NIC Teaming
Hi! i have been looking through lots of links and none of them actually can fully answer my queries.
I am to do a writeup on load balancing and NIC Teaming, is there any1 that knows what are the commonly used load balancing and NIC Teaming methods, when to use each method, and the advantages and disadvantages of each method and the configuration for each

NIC Teaming - On a single server, you will have mutiple NIC. You can Team the NIC so that both NIC will act togather to provide better bandwidth and High avaliblity.
Example : NIC 1 - 1 GB and NIC -2 1 GB so in Team it can act a 2 GB single NIC, If one fails speed will be reduced but it will have HA
Loadbalancing : Two servers hosting same content:
Example : Microsoft.com can be hosted in two or even more servers and a loadbalancer will be used to split load to each server based of the current load and traffic.

and two appliction servers app1 app2.Actually in tns file of app1 there is entry of virtual ip of rac1 (10.22.1.54)and in app2 virtual ip of rac2 (10.22.1.55). so we want to test whether load balancing is happening or not .like if app2 is down so whether the connection of app1 moving to rac2 also or not
so we down app2 and check.Guys tell me how could i check in that duration that whether connnection going to rac2.
i am unable to find the parameter of sessions connected in awr .Please tell how could i identifyi have stopped the IM's of one of my application server and checked the connections to my database with below query and according to it its connecting to both instances.Does it means that load balancing is happening fine.

Session Stickness problem on weblogic load balancer

I having trouble related to session stickiness for weblogic load balancing, am using httpclusterservlet on a proxy server that forward requests to 3 managed server that are members of the same cluster.
I tried to search for a solution to this problem and I found two links that are talking about the same problem but there are still not answered!!.

Based on oracle link Using Sessions and Session Persistence, the documentation says under the "HTTP Session Properties" section that there is a change in how the sessions are formatted and this might cause a problem
for some load balancers (the documentation did not say if weblogic httpclusterservlet is one of them), I tried to do the suggested workaround and I got "java.lang.IllegalStateException: Response already committed" error same as what happens with the user in link https://forums.oracle.com/message/11158966#11158966.
Does anyone knows how to fix this??, I search for a very long time on this problem and with no luck, please help!Hi,
Can you please give me some more information about your setup ...

F5/LB --> Apache or OHS --> WebLogic Cluster..
If you are using F5/OHS directly to WebLogic cluster you can try enabling the session persistence and this problem should go away..
If you are using plain Apache or OHS try putting "DynamicServerList" off.

I have a couple of questions about this and hope you might be able to assist me.
1.- Are VPN load balancing and failover (Active/Active) mutually exclusive ..? I mean they can't be used at the same time correct ..?
2.- How does the ASA handle the return traffic from the Internal LAN towards the remote client .. Because the cluster only requires ONE public virtual IP address, which will work for incoming packets .. but what about the return traffic which has knowledge of the DHCP scope's default gateway IP address only .. ? How gets the returned packet redirected from the default gateway IP address to the respective ASA internal IP address .?

2.- I know that .. my question is in regards the return packets .. for example if I have the below IP schema:
ASA1: Public 20.20.20.20
Private 192.168.1.1
ASA2: Public 20.20.20.21
Private 192.168.1.2
Cluster virutal IP: 20.20.20.10
Default gateway for segment 192.168.1.0 is 192.168.1.1
Let's say that a vpn client tries to connect and the cluster instructs the client to connect to ASA2 20.20.20.21. The packets reach the internal server at 192.168.1.100. The internal server then sends the return packets back to the client by forwarding them to its default gateway which is 192.168.1.1 (ASA1). Here is my question .. how does the cluster handles this because the return packet are supposed to be directed to ASA2 192.168.1.2
