PortalAdmin comes up, but nothing shown in the left pain, no portal root element to create a new portal from.???
I need the migration tool or insights into what table / rows I'm missing in my qa env.

This will allow you to export desktops, pages and books as .portal and .pinc (page and book) files, then reuse these in workshop or reimport them into a database without loosing customizations.

Weblogic portal propagation performance issue.

Hi,
I created a weblogic portal for client and deployed it on server. After some time we made changes in our portal assests.
I want to reflect these changes on production environment using portal propagation.
I am able to propagate portal assests successfully on production environment using ant script but it takes so much time to propagate.
I have used onlinedownload, offlinecombine, onlineUpload, onlineCommit operation.
src.zip size is 40MB takes 3 hours to dowload, dest.zip size is also of 40MB takes 8hours to dowload.
I have used scoping as well.
I want to reduce propagation time.
For this i read concept of proliferation, but i am not clear that what is the role of proliferation in propagation.
Whether or not proliferation will reduce the Propagation time.
Or is there any way to do this.
Your help will be appreciable.

Proliferation refers to the process by which changes made to the Library instance of a portal asset are pushed into user-customized instances of that asset which means that when any changes are made to the portlet in source and if you want to propagate that change to the destination, that time if that portlet is used in a desktop where many users are provided an option to customize that desktop only that particular time at destination if you change the Portal Resources Proliferation of Updates Configuration setting to either Asynchronous or off propagation will be faster because that time propagation utility will not change for each user. If the value is synchronous it changes for each user and hence some delay that too it will happen during commit operation only but not during download operation.
So I feel, Proliferation may not be useful for your case.
We need to find why downloading source is taking 3 hrs and destination is taking 8 hrs.
Please let me know whether you are running downloadsource and downloaddestination.
I suggest run downloadSource in source machine itself and downloadDestination on the destination Machine itself so that you can reduce the network latency.

Weblogic portal content published for future date.

I am using Weblogic portal 10.3, need to publish a content item for futhre date , i tried adding the date and time to startDate property and published it, and the changes got reflected immediately.
has any one got his done.

Case 1 -
Assuming that there is a version which is currently displayed on the portal, if the business has published 3 future versions already (not yet published on portal), then he can make any changes in any of the future versions and have them automatically published.
Case 2 -
If there is a version which is currently displayed and there are 2 future versions published in the repository already, if the business user wants to make any changes in the current version, he just changes and re-publishes for the updated stuff to appear on the portal.
Case 3 - overlaps
Incase of 2 published versions with the same start dates but varying end dates, as the content selector will pick up both the nodes into the arraylist. In that case we can write a comparator, which incase of same start dates, do a comparison on the version id, and then pick the latest version. but in that case, we may lose one version. I guess in that case, we will have to advise the user handling this versionong to provide sequential dates for all the versions.
I hope I have got the issue right and covered all the cases.

Do I need Bea Weblogic Portal for simple web site ?

I have a decision making situation here to use or not to use Bea Weblogic portal 8.1 for my web application along with struts.
Situation : Application has service( batch process with client applications, hand held devices ) and web ( browser based interaction ) oriented architecture. Data flows into centralized system and this data being diagnosed for analysis and displayed on web ( text and as graphical charts ).
I do not see much content management required like Yahoo, but have lots of configurable dynamic presentation . ( dynamic page views DHTML, graphical charts etc,�.).
Question : Is Bea Weblogic Portal 8.1 of any use in this situation ?

I am in elementary at BEA WLP, trying to understand and use it for the first time.
I am analysing at very high level view of architecture.Thinking before doing is an excellent idea. I commend you for exploring it before plunging in.
Struts brings the frame work for web application that controls flow and model.
Seems to be WLP brings the personalization to the web site.I think that's correct. Struts is a JSP/servlet-based Web presentation framework that helps you maintain MVC separation using a Model-2 scheme. (Google for unfamiliar terms.)
Bringing WLP in to the picture makes any sense.I agree if you meant "does not make any sense". You don't need a portal, based on your earlier description. Roles might be in play here. You'll have one for each of the three scenarios that you described in your earlier response.
You'll NEVER have a situation where someone will have the client and admin views visible at the same time. It sounds like your three roles are mutually exclusive. In that case a portal isn't necessary.
Do they;( Bea WLP, Struts ) go hand in hand in the same architecture. Can I achieve the same by just
using struts with out WLP.You can certainly use Struts with BEA's WebLogic. That's a J2EE app server, which has a servlet/JSP engine built in. Maybe that's the confusion here. Is your client insisting that you use WebLogic or the Portal product? They work together. I don't believe you can use the Portal product without WebLogic, but you can use WebLogic without the Portal. Clarify that point with your customer. Maybe they're just asking that you deploy on WebLogic. THAT is quite sensible.
You need to ask your customer another question: do they already have a license for WebLogic and Portal, and is the software installed and running, or are they planning to buy one for the sake of this project? If they want to spend the money and give you a chance to learn WebLogic by all means let them, but know that there are other, free alternatives. (e.g., Tomcat, JBoss, etc.)
Here's one for you: how familiar are you with J2EE? Have you done any projects with EJBs? Will this project require them? How well do you know Struts/servlets/JSPs/JSTL, or will this be your first time with them, too?
I would like to learn WLP feature, but trying to save money for my client by not using too many
technologies.I agree. It's something you can add on later if you need it. Best to get the base application up and running first.

I want a JDBC connection using OCI Driver in Weblogic Portal 8.1 sp4 on Linux. When I had tested using JDBC connection using Plain Java Code it is working. Also when I create the OCI Connection Weblogic Connection Pool it is working.
But My Requirement is to create the connection using Java Code in Portal Application
But When I create OCI connection in the code it is throwing NO SUITABLE DRIVER Found.

Looks like a classloader issue. BEA class loader is very tricky. Any jar added manually in classpath, will end up loading only those classes. Any imports that we have in any of those classes do not get loaded. Anyhow, coming to your point, add classes12.jar inside your portal web project Web-Inf/lib folder and see if that helps. Usually thats where we put all the JARs for 8.1 SPxx applications. If this still breaks, then remove the jar from web-inf/lib folder and add under your portal app App-Inf/lib folder. First try with app-inf/lib folder having this jar. If not then with web-inf/lib. Basically web-inf is specific to that web app only. If you have a different app having this jdbc code, then put under app-inf/lib folder. Make sure that you remove the classes12.jar that you added in classpath either in env variable or in setdomainenv.cmd file.
When weblogic uses native OCI Drivers, it refers to jars at this location: ....\beawlp814\weblogic81\server\ext\jdbc\oracle\10g or 9g. Try using one of these jars and see if that works. Most of the times I used these jars only for oracle specific native drivers.
Word of caution. Try to use Connection Pool and a DataSource created in weblogic console for your jdbc code. This Datasource can still use the Oracle drivers that you want (instead of BEA Weblogic wrapper oci drivers) located in above location. Use JNDI Lookup and get Datasource and then connection. This is more recommended approach with many advantages then using DriverManager approach..

This is Kalyan. I had installed weblogic portal 10.3 in my system.After installing i had tried for the sample portal web application. I had selected the portal web project-->given the project name and selected the necessary things .I had create sample portal when iam trying to run this portal on the server it showing me the error.
Error(s) found in module 'ProData'. Publish was cancelled. See "Problems" view for details.

1. First you need to create the portal ear project by selecting the portal project facets. Then create the portal web project with portal facets and make sure it is added to first create portal ear project. By default it will show in the list. Then portal data sync project is optional. Since this is your first time you can skip for now. Later on you can add data sync project also to the same portal ear. Once you have this, then you can deploy the portal ear project on the portal domain. Remember that you need to create the portal domain with portal facets.
Delete the project you already created and start from fresh. If you already created any portlets or pageflows or jsps etc, copy those files as backup. Once you create portal ear and web projects, copy them into your new application.

To buy or not to buy WebLogic Portal

Hi Folks,
We are facing a tough decision, we have resources for WebLogic Portal but are not sure whether to buy this product for our company to do our intanet, broker portal and supplier portal.
Oracle says Webcenter is their strategic product but we dont have any resources in this country for Webcenter so that is not an option.
Oracle also have not made it clear what the future of WebLogic portal is, besides for the "Continue & Converge" statement and the "9 years support" statement.
Could anyone please help us with information around the future of WebLogic Portal?

I am working in WL and WLP since version 3.1.0 since year 2000. Its going nowhere. It is the market leader and now after WL 9.0, integrated ecliplse environment, it is better than ever. I have worked and working for fortune 10 clients and they have long term roadmap. After Oracle taking over Weblogic, its better for Weblogic. It will find a much bigger customer base, a much bigger financial stability, much larger integration capabilities, better support and marketing. OAS is not comparable to WL so I dont think Oracle is going to market OAS over WL and they will project WL as the production server. And now with 2.0 and WL already fully geared to support it, it will emerge as best Application Server. I have worked in other competitive AS also but none compared to WL. If you are going to Open Source AS like JBoss, then its different story alltogether. Although in near term, due to intergation of BEA and Oracle there might be small hiccups but we all know Oracle is a master of integration and now buying and merging companies is in their veins.
Talk to WLP sales guy about road map.

Adding a Weblogic Portal from source control

I am using Weblogic Portal 10.3.2 and Eclipse 3.5.0. I can successfully create the EAR and portal projects, deploy them, etc. No problem. If I try to copy the projects to another computer or check them into a source control system and check them out on another computer I get the
"Portal Application Services web application should be associated with a Portal Application Services EAR for proper deployment"
and
"A WebLogic Portal web application project should be added as a J2EE module to a WebLogic Portal EAR project for proper deployment" error messages.
I did a directory comparison between a portal project that does work and one that doesn't; they are identical. The only thing I can think of is the ".metadata" directory is different, but this is huge, 1000s of files, over 100 MB.
Has anyone seen this? Any idea of what the problem may be?

The reason for this error is most probably the portalEAR project is not associated wtih the portalWeb project. For any portal application, we must have a portalEAR and a portalWeb project and portalWeb project should be associated with that portalEAR project.
For your existing and original working portal application, check the .project file in textpad located at: ...\user_projects\workspaces\Your_Workspace\yourPortalEAR\.project. The top contents will be like this:

</projects>Once you checked out and added them to the new machine and new workspace, check the same file. If not, after importing from CVS or source control, open both portalEAR and portalWAR in Workshop IDE. Select your portalEAR, right click mouse -> Select Properties -> From properties window on left side, select J2EE Module Dependencies and on right side check the check box corresponding to the portalWeb module. NOW you may need to do this everytime.
Usually this is what I do, if I want other team members to get my portalApplication (EAR, WAR and DataSync project) or to check into source control. I DO NOT check-in or Export individual modules. Instead I Export them as single Archive File.
From Workshop IDE, on left side right click -> Export -> From Export Window, Expand General -> Archive File -> Click on Next. In this window, select all the 3 projects on top left window ie. EAR, WAR and DataSync (if you have one). Then give a valid filename for this ZIP file something like myPortalEARZip.zip etc. Then click on Finish. This will create a big single ZIP file. NOW you can checkin this ZIP file or give to other team members.
Now other team members will open Workshop IDE. Left side rigjht click mouse, select Import -> From Import Window, Expand General -> Existing Projects Into Workspace -> Click Next -> Select the radio button named Select Archive File and hit Browse and choose the above .zip file. It should list out the exising projects from this zip file. NOW mostly you may have to delete the exising same projects from this Workspace before you Import. Then follow the steps and you should get all the projects into your workspace. Do clean build etc.
There may be some other simpler approach, but usually I follow the above proceedure. If you want to continue your existing procedure, then manually link portalEAR with portalWeb project.

Developing JSF Portlets with WebLogic Portal (Oracle White paper May 2009)

I have created a simple JSF Portlet following the steps delineated in paragraph 3.1.1 Creating a JSF Enabled WLP Web Project of the white paper mentioned above. I used Workshop for Weblogic 10gR3. When I tried to deploy that very simple portlet and portal I got this error message :
"!MESSAGE Unable to register J2EE shared library C:\bea\wlportal_10.3\samples\lib\j2ee-modules\wlp-sample-lookandfeel-web-lib.war".
Clearly the folder and file "samples\lib\j2ee-modules\wlp-sample-lookandfeel-web-lib.war" are not under my "C:\bea\wlportal_10.3". My question is where do I download it? Where does it come from?

Maybe you did not include the samples when you installed Oracle WebLogic Portal? Now that this is an Oracle product, samples are not installed or configured by default. This is a change in policy from when WebLogic Portal was a BEA thing, so it takes some getting used to and there are probably plenty of places where documentation and papers could be enhanced to emphasize this.
In addition, it looks like there might be an error in the white paper with respect to configuring your web app to include samples. I don't see any mention of taking an extra step to include the sample facets in your portal app. This oversight may have been caused by the author working with a pre-release of Oracle WebLogic Portal that had not yet been "Oracle-ized" enough to get the default samples out of there. In the old days, I think the samples were automatically included in your portal web app.
To get the samples in a new portal web app while you are creating it with the IDE you can click the "Modify..." button on the first dialog. It is next to the "Configuration" text area. This pops up a dialog that lets you select the "Weblogic Portal Samples" facet for your web app.
To get the samples in an existing portal web app after it has been created, right click the app in the IDE, click "Properties...", click "Project Facets", and select the "Weblogic Portal Samples".
Sorry, I'm not sure what the remedy is for getting samples into an installed product that was not installed with the samples. Unfortunately, I think that is the problem that you need solved. Sorry about that. Hopefully you are working in a test or dev environment that makes it easy to blow away old installations and start over? If not, then maybe install it with samples someplace else and copy the samples/... dir over to your other install?

Problem in creating a build.xml for weblogic portal application

I am facing problem in creating the build.xml using weblogic.BuildXMLGEN tool .
a) Below is the structure of my portal application

i.e we are using weblogic portal 10.3.2 version.
b) Searched some sites/forums regarding the above error, and it says something related to "jwsc" ant task [ i.e while compiling a webservice(JWS) ], but we see this error while compiling a normal controller(jpf) class :(
c) we are using "ant compile" target which internally calls wlcompile task , while executing wlcompile this error is thrown .

Need to add as a WSRP Connection in JDev for Weblogic Portal JSF Portlets.

I am trying to register WLP 10.3.4 JSF Portlets as a WSRP connection in JDev Webcenter 11.1.1.6 Portal Framework application . The below are steps:
-Created Simple WLP Application with JSF Portlets and deployed them on WLS 10.3.4 domain.
-The WSDL url available is http://localhost:7003/TEST_WEB_PORTAL/producer?wsdl
-Now Open JDev and created WCP Framwork app
-Under Application Resource, right click on Connections -> New Connection -> WSRP Producer.
-Click Next on step1 -> Enter WSDL URL on Step 2 and then click next on next 3 screens.
-It tries to register but ended up with below exception:

I have followed the steps given in the http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E26806_01/wlp.1034/e14235/chap_webcenter_interop.htm#BABGIIIJ for preventing User Authentication error by creating user of PortalSystemAdministrator group but did not help.
Please let me know if anyone have faced this exception or any pointers.

Hi,
I tried creating a simple JSF portlet and I can able to register and it is working Fine, but my teammet got the same issue like you :) . While Analyzing what I found is , the location where we created the portlet in weblogic portal. If you created your portlet directly under WebContent folder then this issue is coming up, so try to create the portlet in a folder inside the WebContent folder, say create a folder with name portlets under webcontent and create the JSF portlet inside that portlets folder.
Now start the server and register the same in WebCenter, you will not get that exception. I am going to raise a ticket with Oracle about this issue and get the root cause.

Weblogic Portal 10.3.2 for Windows 64 bit with OEPE

Our environment is Windows 64 bit and we are upgrading from Weblogic Portal 9.2 to 10.3.2.
I have installed Weblogic Portal for 64 bit using generic installer and have also installed OEPE Helios for 64 bit.
I am not getting Portal perspective in Eclipse?

These issues are why we dropped every Oracle products for our new projects. We only kept Oracle SGBD.
Working with Oracle products costs a lot, impose specific tools, impose specific environment (can't work with Windows 7/x64), doesn't integrate in standard toolchains (eclipse, maven, continuous integration, ...). More, you don't have any control on product evolutions and maintenance.
With this decision we saved a lot of money, a lot of time, quality, and community support is far more powerful than buyers think. Nothing is better than standards!
Sorry Oracle but I think you need to seriously rethink your commercial behavior and your relationship with J2EE developers.

Errors in Weblogic server log for Weblogic Portal

Hi,
I apologize if the question has been posted and answered.. I had searched but couldn't find anything in this forum.
My post is a bit lengthy as I will be providing as much details as possible.. sorry about that.. :)
I am new to Weblogic server and Weblogic Portal.. in fact I have never worked on portals. I have installed the Weblogic Portal 10.3.2 along with the Weblogic. I have used quickstart to create a domain. There I have configured the following data sources:
appsGroupSpaceDataSource
cgDataSource
cgDataSource-nonXA
p13nDataSource
portalDataSource
portalDataSourceAlwaysXA
portalDataSourceNeverXA
My database is oracle 11g. I have created a user and granted the user all the admin roles and priviledges
The database connection test had worked for all the sources except appsGroupSpaceDataSource where the test query SELECT COUNT(*) FROM SYSTABLES failed as there was no such table in the database.
I had run the following scripts:
Drop/Create Groupspace Database Objects (appsGroupSpaceDataSource )
Drop/Create P13N Database Objects (p13nDataSource)
Drop/Create Content Database Objects (p13nDataSource)
Drop/Create Portal Database Objects (p13nDataSource)
There were no scripts to run for the other data sources.
After installation whenever I am starting the admin server I am seeing this error in the console:

And the errors are happening in an infinite loop....
I checked and there is no table created in that name in the database.. and being totally new to weblogic I am not sure where else to check.
It would be great if some one could help me track the cause and resolve this..

I digged in the weblogic installation directory and it seems like the domain configuration wizard messed up the jdbc configs for the data sources.
The config xml files for the data sources in the /domain root/config/jdbc directory had oracle driver but the test query was for pointbase. I double checked from the database.xml file in the init-info directory and corrected the entry in the datasource config xmls and voila!.. the errors were gone.
I am not sure if this was the right approach and whether i have solved the issue or simply patched it.. so I am keeping the question open. If any one has any inputs I will be grateful.
If the mods/admins feel that the thread should be marked as solved I will surely do so.
