Webpages freeze on Portege M400 tablet PC

My company have three M400's and we all have the same problem. We are running XP professional. At least 50% of the time the screen freezes when viewing web pages. To unfreeze, I have to minimize and maxim\ise the page and the I can enter data. A typical scenario would be that I didn't realise the page has frozen until I click on a hyperlink and, although I hear the hyperlink click, nothing happens on the screen until I minimise and maximise. Once the screen has unfrozen, I can see that the PC has already jumpedto the new page but couldn't display it.
This seems to suggest a problem with the graphics dislpay hardware/softare.
Any thoughts as to what is going on? Anyone else had this problem? This is very annoying as our customer software is mostly web-based.

I have had this problem of the M400 freezing repeatedly, when using the internet and otherwise. I do not think that it is a software issue. I was advised by Toshiba to remove the Intel Proset Utility and also try to remove the Adobe Faststart which I could not find. After removing the Intel Proset Utility, I have lost wireless connectivity at home. All other computers are fine except my Tablet. Grateful for suggestions and advice.

  • Portege M400 Tablet Product Recovery DVD-ROM

Where can I get a set of Product Recovery DVD-ROM discs for my Portege M400 Tablet please?

    Hi
Usually you can order the recovery disk using this page:
    https://backupmedia.toshiba.eu/landing.aspx
But this page provides recovery disk only for the newer notebook series.
Im not quite sure if you will be able to order the recovery disk because of the age of M400
Anyway, the other possibility would be the ASP. You can get in contact with your authorized service partner and could ask for such disk
In worst case you will need to use an own Windows disk and the Toshiba drivers are downloadable from driver page.

  • Portege M400 & Tablet Multi Dock

    Hi,
Toshiba does not include Tablet Multi Dock into compatible devices for Portege M400 notebook. Did anybody try to pair these two devices? What are the results?

    Hi
I have found info that you can use follow Docker with your Portege:
    PA3508U-1PRP
    PA3508E-1PRP
    PA3508A-1PRP
    PA3508C-1PRP
    PA3508Z-1PRP (Express Port Replicator)
Obviously Tablet Multi Dock is not listed as supported. As far as I know this Tablet Multi Dock is pretty old thing (about three years and it was designed for Portege M200.

  • Portege M400 freezes, screen goes black and fan speed increase when moved

    Can someone please help me?
I recently received the Portege M400 from a friend 4 days ago and reformatted to Windows XP Tablet edition.
All was going well until I wanted to move the laptop to my coffee table, but as soon as I move the laptop it freezes, the screen goes black and the fan speed increases dramatically!,
So far I have had no success in fixing this problem and I much appreciated is some one could help me!

    Hi there,
I have the same laptop. Bought it from a friend also! That was a year ago. It was working perfectly till 6 months ago when I had it going 100% like yours. Screen freezes, fan speeds up and hangs up once it is moved. Recently, even if it doesnt move it hangs up also. I have tried many things like reinstalling drivers and Windows.....etc.
I dont think it is Windows problem or drivers problem, because if you run BIOS and try to move the laptop, it also hangs up!!
Tried updating the BIOS, also no benefit. I ended up opening the laptop and having a look to the motherboard (thinking that I could see something that I could fix!! But again, did not get any results.
I tried also disconnecting peripherals one by one to see whether I could spot the problem, I disconnected the battery, the hard disk, the optical drive, the wirelss modem (from inside), memory, and even the bluetooth, but could not spot the culprit.
I believe now that the problem is basically the motherboard (sort of wear and tear insulation problem) and it is beyond my humble expertise.
I am sure if I would contact TOSHIBA, they would not be of much benefit as I am a second hand user. And if I try to buy from them a main board, they will charge me hell of money.
I hope that this is helpful for you to avoid you wasting your time like me.
Please if you would come into any progress, let me know. Likewise, I would be happy to update you.

  • Portege M400 keeps freezing

I recenlty purchased a Portege M400 and this completely freezes and requires a hard reboot at least once a day - any ideas on how to fix this?

    Hi Michael,
    I had the same problem.
You should first make sure that your system is accepted by the machine as working properly:
    - check the device manager for faulty drivers.
    - fully update Windows.
    - run a scandisk at startup.
    - run a full virus and spyware/malware check.
    - run a full defragmentation.
Once you've done all that, check your BIOS version. The current BIOS is version 1.5. The one installed on your machine (if preinstalled) should be 1.4.
If you have version 1.4, go to the update page for your model, download the Windows based BIOS upgrade and unzip it to a convenient location.
VERY IMPORTANT: make sure your computer is in boot mode (and not in resume mode) and that all security software has been disabled before proceeding with the upgrade. You should also temporarily disable the screen saver and disconnect from the internet (to make sure that no other automatic update is running in the background).
When you are satisfied that your computer is completely idle, double click on the exe file and do not touch anything until the machine has performed a full reboot.
There are other updates available on the site, but proceed with caution and only update a driver (ie display driver) if you are unsatisfied with it. If the machine is working fine after the BIOS upgrade, I suggest leaving it as it is.
    Good luck.

  • Portege M400 freezes due to overheating

I have exactly the same problem with a Portege M400.
After an hour or 2 the the fan becomes extremely noisy and the PC freezes. The base of the PC becomes too hot to touch and in fact the Tochiba/Microsoft and barcode stickers on the base have turned brown due to the heat.
The only way to fix the problem seems to be to turn the PC off for 15 minutes of so and reboot.
When this happens I am usually only running outlook, Norton and a browser!!!
This hs been happening for about 6 months. I've cleaned out the fan but this has made no difference - anyone know a fix?

    Hi
If you have cleaned the cooling modules and if this didnt help, then you should get in contact with an local ASP technicians.
Possibly the notebook must be disassembled completely and should be cleaned inside.
This is very tricky procedure! Furthermore the thermal grease which I placed between the CPU and the cooling modules should be renewed.
After a long time of usage, thermal grease becomes dry and cannot channel the warmness created by CPU.
Last but not lease you should use your notebook always on a table. Do use it in bed or lying on the knees. In such case the cooling ventilator would not get enough air and this leads to a higher temperature.

  • Portege M400 - How to install Toshiba Utilities for Windows 7?

I've upgraded my Portege M400 to Winows 7 (32bit) which went fine. However, cant find how to get and install the utilities I had included with the XP Tablet version.
Can anyone suggest how to get them (I understand they were available for Vista)?
    TIA.
    Kris

    Hi
The Toshiba Utilities that you mean are only designed for Windows XP. On Windows Vista and Windows 7 you need only the Toshiba Value Added Package. This package contains all what you need.
Portege M400 doesnt support Windows 7 but you can try to install the Vista drivers. The most of them are also work on Windows 7.
As far as I know you also need Toshiba Button Support on this model.

  • Portege M400 - Windows XP cannot find the hard disk drive

    Hi,
Ive got a Portege M400 to which im wanting to start a fresh, I never had the tablet XP CD so im trying to install using a XP Pro disc but everytime I get no hard drive can be detected and I tried a another Home edition disc also.
Ive searched for SCSI/ SATA drivers but can only find RAID drivers to which are no good for me,
Hopefully someone can help me out
    Thanks

    Hi wacksonjackson,
Why these RAID drivers are not good for you? Windows XP requires RAID drivers if your notebook has RAID controller and there is no other option to install XP from a normal Windows XP disk. So download the RAID drivers on official Toshiba website. Either you create a new installation disk with RAID drivers using freeware tool nLite or you copy the drivers on an external USB FDD and load them during XP setup.
Also check similar threads here in forum. You will find hundreds of similar threads about SATA and RAID drivers.
    Check this!!!

  • Picking and moving Portege M400 causes crash and lockup

I have a new problem with Portege M400 that started a few days ago.
If I pick it up or move it then it will crash or lock up. I'm wondering if anyone has any clue as to what may be causing this and what can be done?
My only guess is to replace the hard drive?
    Thanks,
    Greg

It is a short that happens when the lappie is moved due to the hinge no longer being tightly held to the case.
Took the lappie apart this weekend. Had to do both base and screen as the hinge (obviously) goes into both bits.
1 of 2 things solved the problem for me (maybe both):
1 - Taking it apart and putting it back together again - screws all retightened etc so the hinge moves a lot less now.
2- putting some tape around the wires that are rubbed up against when the hinge moves.
There are 5 wires (3 small, round, 2 large and flat) that go through the hinge.
This guide gets you most of the way in:
    http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/Toshiba-Portege-M400/take-apart-tablet-pc-1.htm
    and
    http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/Toshiba-Portege-M400/remove-lcd-screen-digitizer-1.htm
After following the guides there is a little more to do to get into the hinge, but not too much.
All in all took about 4 hours.
Make sure you record which screws came from where - there are quite a few that look very similar but only fit certain holes.
    Enjoy and good luck.

  • Startup problems on Portege M400

Sometimes my Portege M400 won't start up and hangs but sometimes it does.
Could this be a software problem or hardware?
The hard drive doesn't boot and the battery icon at the fron of the tablet stays amber.
    Thanks Mick

As xaver already wrote it is not easy to say what is wrong there. It will be interesting to know what happen exactly when notebook hangs. You can test it with clean preinstalled OS using delivered recovery media.
If the problem persists it is really possible that there is some hardware related problem.

  • Portege M400 - unable to use full 4Gb RAM

I've installed two KTT667D2/2G modules on my laptop (Portege M400-103, part. no. PPM40E-012018G3) - making total 4Gb. However, both original Windows XP Tablet and Ubuntu 9.04 are unable to see all the 4Gb - they see 3.2Gb only.
The BIOS shows the amount correctly - 4096 Mb.
I've also tried to fix the issue by updating BIOS to the last version (3.80, 30/05/08), but both OS's (Windows and Ubuntu) still see 3.2Gb only.
    Any ideas? Thanks.

But that's ridiculous! Why the specs tell me [maximum expandability : 4,096 MB |http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/jsp/SUPPORTSECTION/discontinuedProductPage.do?service=EU&BV_UseBVCook ie=yes&PRODUCT_ID=114027] if the installed CPU doesn't support 64 bit? I see "4096 Mb", I go and buy these 4Gb and I can't use it all. So I wasted my money just because they didn't bother to state 3.2Gb instead of 4Gb (being aware of the 32 bit CPU limitation) !

  • Portege M400 boot problem

    Hi everybody!
I have had this Portege M400 for almost 2.5 years and never encountered such problem.
When I press Power button *HDD led light turns on, then WiFi and then suddenly HDD goes off* and stays that way :(. Optionally, Toshiba logo displays in the mean time. I thought that was HDD problem just to find out that after tilting my laptop 90 degrees HDD led started flashing again. Eventually, when Windows loading animation started it would be "safe" to return to normal position and Windows would start.
Sooo, I assume that the problem is somehow connected to accelerometer, is it? I don't get such freeze-ups after Windows boots. Currently I have BIOS 3.8 version and Windows 7 Pro installed ...
This thing really starts to annoy me - people watch me strangely as I tilt my laptop 90 degrees :-)
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks in advance!
    Best regards,
    Jovan

    Hi
Maybe this has something to do with the notebooks HDD?
Maybe the HDD head cannot move properly and the vertical position helps to get the HDD head moving again
Unfortunately, I have never seen such strange notebook behavior and therefore I can provide just some personal suggestions.
In my opinion the HDD should be checked at first maybe the issue could be solved by HDD replacement

  • Portege M400: Why am I not asked for a password at boot?

    Hi,
I have a Portege M400 and I used the Toshiba Security Assist software to set up a BIOS boot password as well as an HDD protection password. This software, as well as the actual BIOS (Esc+F1 at boot) both show that the password I set is registered/recognized.
However, I am not actually asked for either of those passwords when I boot the computer!!!
I have a dual-boot system with the original WinXP for Tablet PC on one of the partitions, and an Ubuntu Feisty on another. My boot loader is GRUB but I don't understand why that should affect the behaviour of the BIOS that should happen before it calls the boot loader...
Can someone help me with this? It would be really important for me to protect my BIOS and the hard drive.
    Thanks in advance,
    dsokus

    1. Check your security settings with the Toshiba password utilty. Are these configured correctly?
    2. Did you set the user or the supervisor password? If you only set the supervisor password you are not asked for the password.
    3. Try to set the HDD and User pw in the initial bios setup (press ESC when prowering on).

  • Portege M400 Problems

My Portege M400-EZ5301 has one consistent problem and I would like to know if it is something I can resolve myself, before sending it of for expensive repairs. Ever since the 1-year warranty ran out on this table-pc, the fan accelorates randomly and freezes the computer. This happens at the slightest movement, so I have been immobile with this laptop for some months now. The problem has gotten worse and now the fan goes off at any time, and cannot restart. When I restart the computer, the fan goes off immediately and sometimes it actually takes me an hour to get it restarted. I give it some minutes before restarting but I keep getting the high speed fan and a frozen start screen. I am desperately seeking any information if someone else has experienced the same problem or has some idea what's going on with this laptop. I have come to my last bit of patience from loosing so many vital information during these episode.

Understand your concern. The fan operates randomly on the condition affected from the processes,HDD and apps in use, longevity running of the components so to speak. Occasionally, it may not operate right upon bootup, but as harddrive works it does. Consistently running an indicator overheating-is the fan and exhaust area free of debris, good air flow around unit. 'Freeze' the computer is application oriented in most cases. Has there been a power loss to the unit with power adapter plugged in? Can you pinpoint which program you are in when a high speed fan.  Possible a trip to the Authorized Service Provider is in order. Will rsearch more.
