WebServiceContext is null in Unit Tests
I'm trying to write Unit Tests for a service which defines a webservice context thus :
@Resource protected WebServiceContext wsContext = null;
public void foo() {
messageContext = wsContext.getMessageContext();
List<Header> headerList = (List<Header>) messageContext.get(Header.HEADER_LIST);
}This works fine on the Server (Websphere). However, calling the same in a Unit Test fails as wsContext is null.I'm using Spring as the backbone for the entire service framework. I checked the spring configuration for this bean and nowhere does it declare a wsContext as a property setter. It seems to just work when deployed on the AppServer!
However, the same injection fails to happen while running Unit Tests. I'm trying to figure out if there is a way I can stub it out, to no avail. Any help would be appreciated!

I found that I was not receiving a null on the WebServiceContext. My problem was that I was trying to use it in the class constructor, but it is not available there.
The following:
MessageContext ctxt = wsc.getMessageContext();
ServletContext req = (ServletContext) ctxt.get(ctxt.SERVLET_CONTEXT);
works fine when used in a web service method.
My second issue was with getInitParameter() method. To use getInitParameter(), the elements must by defined in the context-param section of the web.xml, not in the init-param.

Unit Testing, Null, and Warnings
I have a Unit Test that includes the following lines:
Dim nullarray As Integer()()
Assert.AreEqual(nullarray.ToString(False), "Nothing")
The variable "nullarray" will obviously be null when ToString is called (ToString is an extension method, which is the one I am testing). This is by design, because the purpose of this specific unit test is to make sure that my ToString extension
method handles null values the way I expect. The test runs fine, but Visual Studio 2013 gives includes the following warning:
Variable 'nullarray' is used before it has been assigned a value. A null reference exception could result at runtime.
This warning is to be expected, and I don't want to stop Visual Studio 2013 from showing this warning or any other warnings, just this specific case (and several others that involve similar scenarios). Is there any way to mark a line or segment
of code so that it is not checked for warnings? Otherwise, I will end up with lots of warnings for things that I am perfectly aware of and don't plan on changing.
Nathan Sokalski [email protected] http://www.nathansokalski.com/Hi Nathan Sokalski,
Variable 'nullarray' is used before it has been assigned a value. A null reference exception could result at runtime.
Whether the warning above was thrown when you built the test project but the test run successfully? I assume Yes.
Is there any way to mark a line or segment of code so that it is not checked for warnings?
There is no built-in way to make some code snippet or a code line not be checked during compiling, but we can configure some specific warnings not to be warned during compiling in Visual Basic through project Properties->Compile
tab->warning configurations box.
For detailed information, please see: Configuring Warnings in Visual Basic
Another way is to correct your code logic and make sure the code will not generate warning at runtime.
If I misunderstood you, please tell us what code you want it not to be checked for warnings with a sample so that we can further look at your issue.

Unit testing - problems using £ sign
Sorry if this has come up before...
We're using the SQL Developer unit testing functionality in what we thought was a fairly straightforward manner.
We use a startup to set up some data, run a procedure with specific values for the inputs, compare the outputs with expected values, and then use a teardown to remove the data.
All works well except for one output field. For reasons I won't bother to go into, it's a varchar2 field that returns an amount, in the format £9.99 - i.e. with a UK pound (£) sign at the start of the string.
Whenever I try and input an expected value including the pound sign, the whole value gets converted to null - so, £9.50 gets saved as an expected value of null, which then, of course, causes the test to fail (unless we set it to ignore the value which somewhat defeats the point of testing !)
Playing around a little, it seems that characters such as $ and # are ok, but any string that uses £ anywhere within it (e.g. 876f£ffe) gets saved as null.
Has anyone else encountered this or have a workaround/fix ?
(SQL Developer version 3.2.20.09, running on Windows XP 32-bit)Have you tried opening a new browser window as the new user? That is:
1. Hold Shift and right click IE shortcut
2. Select Run as different user
3. Enter the new user's credentials
4. Browse to the SharePoint site

Unit Testing: Supplying SYSDATE on a DATE parameter
hi all,
I have a procedure that I'm unit testing and one of the parameter is date, I want to supply a dynamic value to it relative to sysdate but SQL Developer only accepts hard coded date values. Does anyone know how I can supply SYSDATE or SYSDATE-50 to a date parameter directly. I can already solve this by using a wrapper procedure, just wondering if there's a solution to directly supply the value.
Thanks,
AlfredoHi Kranthi.
1. Assuming you are with Plus you can make the parameters optional in the parameters screen (tools -> parameters)
so that if they get NULL as value they will return all data.
2. the second way is if you like to keep it mandatory is to define a default value for the parameter and then take care of the situation in the condition.
for example you'll define the 1-Jan-1900 as your default date for the from_date.
Then in the condition change if you'll define it just as from_date > :P_from_date then you got what you wanted.
BTW In similar situations when you are dealing with varchar you can do a manipulation such as:
from_date > :P_from_date
Or
:P_from_date = '1-Jan-1900'

Unit testing in J2EE environment
Hi All:
We have been trying to use Junit for creating unit test scripts, and have been bit successful in unit testing DAOs and Value objects - but problem is testing of components like EJBs and Servlets or even classes like Actions or Commands. Since these components run under application server environment, I am not sure how to unit test them without either deploying them on the actual server or simulating app server and rest of the system.
I was wondering if people could share their experience in writing unit test scripts especially for J2EE components - like Servlets, JSPs and EJBs. On the similar note, is there any similar tool or API for creating integration test scripts?
Thanks,Well - we already have couple of other servers but that's for beta, QA and Integration testing. Problem is with the unit testing. In unit testing, some piece of code is tested by itself. And I am not sure how I can unit test some of the classes like Servlets, EJBs, JSPs or even dependent classes like Commands or Actions. For example, consider following Action class from Java Pet Store:
public final class CartHTMLAction extends HTMLActionSupport {
public Event perform(HttpServletRequest request)
throws HTMLActionException {
// Extract attributes we will need
String actionType= (String)request.getParameter("action");
HttpSession session = request.getSession();
// get the shopping cart helper
CartEvent event = null;
if (actionType == null) return null;
if (actionType.equals("purchase")) {
String itemId = request.getParameter("itemId");
event = new CartEvent(CartEvent.ADD_ITEM, itemId);
else if (actionType.equals("remove")) {
String itemId = request.getParameter("itemId");
event = new CartEvent(CartEvent.DELETE_ITEM, itemId);
else if (actionType.equals("update")) {
Map quantities = new HashMap();
Map parameters = request.getParameterMap();
for (Iterator it = parameters.keySet().iterator();
it.hasNext(); ) {
String name = (String) it.next();
String value = ((String[]) parameters.get(name))[0];
final String ITEM_QTY = "itemQuantity_";
if (name.startsWith(ITEM_QTY)) {
String itemID = name.substring(ITEM_QTY.length());
Integer quantity = null;
try {
quantity = new Integer(value);
catch (NumberFormatException nfe) {
quantity = new Integer(0);
quantities.put(itemID, quantity);
event = CartEvent.createUpdateItemEvent(quantities);
return event;
In order to unit test above class from say, JUnit test script class, I will have to pass HttpServletRequest object to its method - I will also have to store corresponding command params and store them in the request object - how will you write unit test script for the above class? -
Suggestions requested for Unit Testing process and build processes.
Hi All,
We are using WebLogic WorkShop 8.1 SP2 to build our WebApp. One thing I am trying
to get together is a "Best Practises" list for aspects of WorkShop developement,
particularly Unit Testing, Continous Build methodology, source control management
etc.I have been through the "Best Practises Guide" that comes in WorkShop help,
but it doesnt address these issues.This could help us all for future projects.
1)Could anyone give pointers on how to perform Unit Testing using either JUnit/JUnitEE
in the WorkShop realm, given that Controls cannot be accessed directly from PO
Test classes.
2)For a project of size say 5 developers ,does it make sense to have a nightly
build using tools like CruiseControl?We use CVS for our source control and its
working out pretty well, but given that we currently have no Unit Tests that can
be run after the build and that can provide some reports on what broke/what didnt?
I am sure we all would appreciate any suggestions and more questions on this topic.
Thanks,
Vik.Hi, Chris,
can you perhaps explain your solution in greater detail. I am really curious to
find a way to test controls.
"Chris Pyrke" <[email protected]> wrote:

I have written (well it's a bit of a dirty hack really) something that
lends itself
to the name ControlTest (it unit tests controls). Its a blend of Junit
and Cactus
with some of the source of each brutalised a bit to get things to work
(not much
- it was a couple of hours work, when I was supposed to be doing something
else).
To write a control test you code something like...
package com.liffe;
import com.liffe.controlunit.ControlTestCase;
import controls.Example;
public class TestExample extends ControlTestCase
private Example example = null;
public void setUp() {
example = (Example)getControl("example");
public void testExample() {
this.assertNotNull(example);
String result = example.getData();
assertEquals(result, "Happy as Larry");
Other tasks required to set up a test are creating a web project with
a jpf which
needs some cut and paste code (14 lines) in its begin method and a jsp
which is
also cut and paste (5 lines). (ie create a standard web project and paste
in 2
pieces of code)
In the web project you need to create a control (A) with an instance
name of controlContainer.
(if it's called something else the pasted in code will need changing
to reflect)
In this control you need to put an instance of TestContainerImpl and
any controls
that need testing.
You then need to add a method to the control (A) that looks like…
* @common:operation
public String controlTestRun(String theSuiteClassName, boolean xsl)
container.setControl("example", example);
return container.controlTestRun(theSuiteClassName, xsl);
You need to call container.setControl for each control being tested and
the object
'container' is the instance name of the TestContainerImpl that was put
in.
There are 4 jars (junit, cactus etc) that go in the library. You will
also need
the ControlUnitBase project (or maybe just it's jar).
To use you call a URL like:
http://localhost:7001/TestWeb/Controller.jpf?test=com.liffe.TestExample
TestWeb is the name I gave to my web project - this will be different
for each
test project
com.liffe.Example is the class above and will therefore be different
for each
test case.
You can also call
http://localhost:7001/TestWeb/Controller.jpf?test=com.liffe.TestExample&xsl=true
(Note the extra &xsl=true) and the browser will (if it can) render it
more prettily.
This seems to do the job quite nicely, but there are several caveats
I would hope
someone from bea would be able to address before I start using it widely.
1) To access the control you need to create it (eg as a subcontrol in
the control
(A) above.
To get it into the test case you need to pass it round as an Object (can't
return
Control from a control operation). As it's being passed around among
Java (POJO)
classes I'm assuming that control remains in the control container context
so
this is OK. It seems to work and the Object is some form of proxy as
any control
seems to be reproxied before the control is invoked from the test case.
2) If I'm testing controls called from a JPD then they either need to
be in a
control project (and my test cases called from a Web Project) which makes
for
a large increase in project numbers (we already have this and are trying
to resist
it) To avoid this - as a process project is a brain damaged web project
I simply
perform some brain surgery and augment the process project with some
standard
files found in any old web project. this means I can call the test JPF
from a
browser. This seems nasty, is there a better way?
3) I would like to be able to deliver without the test code. At the worst
the
code can be in place but must be inacessible in a production environment.
I don't
know how best to do this - any suggestions (without creating lots of
projects,
or lots of manual effort)
If anyone has read this far I would ask the question does this seem like
the kind
of thing that would be useful?
Hopefully a future version of workshop will have something to enable
unit testing
and this hacking will be unnecessary.
Could someone from BEA tell me if this is a dangerous way to do things?

SQL Developer 2.1: Problem exporting and importing unit tests
Hi,
I have created several unit tests on functions that are within packages. I wanted to export these from one unit test repository into another repository on a different database. The export and import work fine, but when running the tests on the imported version, there are lots of ORA-06550 errors. When debugging this, the function name is missing in the call, i.e. it is attempting <SCHEMA>.<PACKAGE> (parameters) instead of <SCHEMA>.<PACKAGE>.<FUNCTION> (parameters).
Looking in the unit test repository itself, it appears that the OBJECT_CALL column in the UT_TEST table is null - if I populate this with the name of the function, then everything works fine. Therefore, this seems to be a bug with export and import, and it is not including this in the XML. The same problem happens whether I export a single unit test or a suite of tests. Can you please confirm whether this is a bug or whether I am doing something wrong?
Thanks,
Pierre.Hi Pierre,
Thanks for pointing this out. Unfortunately, it is a bug on our side and you have found the (ugly) "work-around".

Bad news is that any INTEGER parameter for which you specify a non-null value will fail.
Possibly helpful news is that if you create a 'clone' of you function using NUMBER as the data type, you can continue to experiment with how unit testing may be of use to you.
Sorry no instant answer. :(

Unit testing PL/SQL used in APEX application
question from my customer :
I am developing an application in Oracle Application Express and am working on unit tests for the PL/SQL stored procedures and packages that are stored in the underlying database and that are used by the APEX application. These unit tests should run within the SQL Developer Unit Test framework.
The problem is that some of the PL/SQL code stored in the database uses functions like NV('APPLICATION_ITEM') to access items in the apex application. These do not return any values when I try to execute the PL/SQL within the unit test framework, ie through the backend. While it is good that the NV function does not error, NULL do not really work well in my scenario either (for example when the result of this functions is inserted into a NOT NULL column of a table). I can think of a few workarounds, such as creating my own NV function inside the test schema to return desirable values, but nothing seems a really satisfactory solution. I just wonder if there is any best practice recommendation from Oracle for this scenario - how can I run code that uses APEX-specific functions through the back end. I could not find anything in the APEX documentation for this but I'd be interesting to know if there is any recommendation how to best deal with this case.
I am using SQL Developer version 4.0.0.13.80User[[:digit:]*
Your PL/SQL Package APIs are poorly designed.
You need to take Tom Kyte's quote to heart:
"Application come and application go, but data remains forever"
In short, you need to separate your database processing code (the stuff you need to unit test) from front-end/middle tier code.
(repetitiveness is for effect.. not rudeness.)
As such, The PL/SQL code that you need to 'UNIT TEST' must work without needing to run in APEX.
The PL/SQL code that you need to 'UNIT TEST' must work without needing to run in .NET.
The PL/SQL code that you need to 'UNIT TEST' must work without needing to run in JSP.
The PL/SQL code that you need to 'UNIT TEST' must work without needing to run in Jive.
The PL/SQL code that you need to 'UNIT TEST' must work without needing to run in Ruby.
The PL/SQL code that you need to 'UNIT TEST' must work without needing to run in Perl::CGI.
The PL/SQL code that you need to 'UNIT TEST' must work without needing to run in P9.
The PL/SQL code that you need to 'UNIT TEST' must work without needing to run in <place latest and greatest thing here>.
Again, I don't mean to sound rude. I'm just trying to reinforce the idea that you need to separate database code from middle-tier/front-end stuff.
Basically, you will need to separate all of your packages into multiple parts.
a _CORE package (that will be unit tested) that does all the hard work
an _APEX package for APEX infrastructure (this works with NV()/V(), etc.)
a _NET package for .NET infrastructure when you need it
a _JSP package for the JSP infrastructure when you need it
a _JIVE package for the JIVE infrastructure when you need it
a _<place latest and greatest thing here> for the <place latest and greatest thing here> when you need it.

thanks for getting back to me.
I just went to the controls panel (under Systemsteuerung\Programme\Standardprogramme\Dateizuordnungen festlegen, sorry, German) I can see:

Description: Shockwave Flash Object
Application: Unknown application
Also, double clicking a swf file prompts me with a dialog saying Windows can't openit since it doesn't know how. -
Hi folks,
I need to unit test my code to see if my solution is viable.
I have the following code ( written for WLS 8.1 using jdk 1.4).
I my junit test I make a call to connect() then I get the follwing error:
at com.sun.enterprise.naming.SerialContext.lookup(SerialContext.java:120)
at javax.naming.InitialContext.lookup(InitialContext.java:347)
at se.netwise.mcx.alarmhandler.AlarmNotificationManager.connect(AlarmNotificationManager.java:54)
at se.netwise.mcx.alarmhandler.test.AlarmHandlingTest.testSendAlarmPRS001(AlarmHandlingTest.java:48)
The line that is a problem seems to be:
home = (MBeanHome) ctx.lookup("weblogic.management.home");
Do need to mock it?
cheers,

}Daniel's right, that it needs to run in weblogic, if you're not doing that. I've written some unit tests that get called from a startup class when the server boots for the same reason. I couldn't (or didn't want to spend the time) to mock the MBeanHome. But I've tried to ween off using MBeanHome since it's not standard jmx, and use MBeanServer wherever possible. MBeanHome has been deprecated, and this will help when you have to port to a later version of weblogic.

Accessing Resource file in a bundle from unit test case
Hello All,
Here is my problem . I have a plugin app that is loaded in of the host application. I have a resource plist file in the plugin. I access the resource using the api [[[NSBundle mainBundle[ bundleWithIdentifier:@"MyPluginIdentifier"] pathForResource@"Resource_Name" ofType:@"Resource_Type"]. This I get path of the resource file perfectily, but it fails when I do unit testing. I am using SenTest framework kit for unit testing. When I access the resource by using above api, I get null value. Since the running executable will be otest which is located at /Developer/Tools folder, So how to access my resource file in unit test. Should I need to hard code for the Path? Any inputs are highly appreciated.
Thanks,
NaveenSo there is some important stuff realized by the UIKit UIApplicationMain function that has to be reproduced in the setup of the test.

Unit Tester: Bug in Export/Import of Suites
I was moving my Unit Test repository from one schema to another, so I first exported all of my suites and then imported them into a new repository.
But, when I imported them into their new repository, all of the tests forgot what specific function/procedure name within a package they were actually calling. For example, the test that used to be for "pccdb.rotat_maintenance.parseRotatKey", now says it's going to call "pccdb.rotat" (i.e. the specific function name it's supposed to be calling within that package disappeared).
I went looking and found that in the UT_TEST table, the "object_call" column was null for all of my tests, but because all of my tests call methods within packages, I'm thinking that column shouldn't be NULL. So, I filled in the appropriate function name for one of them, and the test started working....
So, something in the import or export of unit suites (or their tests) isn't working quite right in populating the ut_tests.object_call column, I'm guessing - please take a look at it.This was originally reported in SQL Developer 2.1: Problem exporting and importing unit tests thread. It was logged as
Bug 9236694 - 2.1: OTN: UT_TEST.OBJECT_CALL COLUMN NOT EXPORTED/IMPORTED
It has been fixed and will be available in the next patch release.
