Website as a donation to nonprofit

Im wondering if anyone has encountered this.
I built a website for a non-profit and they gave me a receipt for my taxes for the donation.
However - it seems you cannot take any deductions for anything that is "value of your time".
so i am frustrated with this. how is this any different from any other "good" that would be bought or sold. GOODS donation would be items that are deducted based on thier value.
has anyone run into this beefore?
did  you  have a tax pro help you resolve?
if so - what did you do? deduct the value or not?
thanks
sam

In the US, the IRS closed off that loophole in the 1960s or early 1970s. And, perhaps, it's a good closure.
Here is how you can deduct work you do for a non-profit.
You can deduct mileage. You can deduct expenses incurred by you as a result of your donated time, so if you purchase a Dreamweaver plug-in for that donation, you may deduct it (I would not inform the IRS that the plug-in also works for your paying clients as well). You can deduct expenditures. You can deduct equipment purchases that you give to the non-profit as a part of your work.
But the work itself is volunteerism. One of the problems that IRS may have had in the past is that people marked up the price of their work when they normally gave discounts, so a hairdresser who did haircuts for a non-profit and who normally offers regular clients a 20% discount would charge "full price" to the non-profit or would increase the number of hours claimed to reach a certain donation amount.
Nowadays, I will happily build a website for a non-profit in the interest in selling my services to others who volunteer for or help run the non-profit. They won't be able to command as much of my time as paying companies do but there will be good service, the website will work just fine and it will allow them to collect with people interested in what they have to offer.
So if you decide to do this again, tell the officers of the non-profit that you want referrals, at least a certain number of them so that you can do well by doing good.

I am writing an interactive book and want to use media files and stuff. My question is: If I want to sell this book in the iBookstore,
may I use photos I find on google images and media i find on youtube? Or must all be my own stuff?

No !  well not just any photo image or "media". The person who created the photo images has a copyright protection IF  he/she wishes to impose it - ditto video and other  media.
However if its out of copyright by  virtue of age and certain other factors - its considered in "The Public Domain" which is why you see paintings by the Impressionists all over chocolate boxes and posters to name but two!
There are websites offering images donated by the creators and all for free.
Taking and using a picture you do not own copyright and placing online where it can be downloaded is  first "publishing" and you  need permission and placing in a situation where it can be copied and re-distributed is a breach of copyright.
Look at the  tail end credits on any DVD...  the above is always  included.
Others rmay  correct me but Copyright in some countries is vaild from creation until 50 years after the death of the creator. However, that is not always the case.  Example, assume I am bequeathed a photo archive and on the  last day year 50,  I  publish a completely new version of the archive, wizzed through Photoshop, cleaned, cropped and modified in other ways.. then I can assert my claim for copyright of the renewed archive, but its a bit more complicated!!!
You can search for "Free Photo Images (  media) , or royalty free images and if you land on a particular website you can ask permission. If you send me a request, my reply will be NO... and you get a warning of dire consequences if your infringe my copyright!  Other may be more lenient and in fact feel pretty good to be  asked.
A way to get some guidance is to check out Wikipedia and the many  images included in its subject matter, check out the copyright status.
Beware of using  photo images of paintings in  Galleries and Museums, they may have copyright conditions.. but one can always contact them to seek  permission.
Search  for  Copyright and ownership and it should bring up some good information. Depending on your country.. it may have its own  Copyright website. USA are more detailed than most, The UK has the 1988 Copyright Act.
Also remember that all photo images carry exif embedded data which  among other things carries the copyright information and shows up in a google search for the right  keyword!  Scanned images processed through Photoshop and other editors  can have the metatdata added also.

  • How can I change the password in the iBook donated to our nonprofit.  No password was given with the iBook?  We need to put in printer and other software.  Help, we can use the laptop without changing the password.

How can we change the password in the iBook donated to our nonprofit?  No password was given with the iBook and every time we try to install items, the password window pops up.  We need to put in printer and other software.  Help! We can use the laptop without changing the password.

If you did not get an OS X install-restore DVD with the computer you may need
to buy one from somewhere, and you may be lucky to get a retail OS X 10.5.x
version. The original grey-label install set of software and OS X it shipped with
likely would be an older system than Leopard 10.5. Last versions of G4 Mac, &
G5, shipped with a Tiger 10.4 system; so did early Intel-based Mac. Grey discs
which accompanied other computer build models generally do not interchange.
The last OS X version a PowerPC architecture can use, if supported, is 10.5.8.
A PPC processor at 867MHz & faster should be able to run OS X 10.5 Leopard.
{With the correct disc installer, you can use it to change a password and other
    things including re-install, and perform disk utility functions, etc.}
There is a chance you may be able to get a white-label Replacement 10.4 DVD
or Replacement 10.5 DVD from AppleCare or the online Apple Store (800myapple)
from a Mac OS X system specialist; these have been available yet hard to get
as not all persons involved with them seem to know if they still exist until someone
is asking. These aren't retail stock, are special discs for computers who could use
a system later than original old discs; these are complete install discs not for one
specific series of Mac. Generally they'd work in supported PowerPC G4/G5; but
do not replace specialized original install DVD, such as an early Intel mac requires.
You'd need to have a serial number of the computer, and a method of payment
when seeking some replacement system media from Applecare or Apple sales
and these discs are not available in a retail store. The original Retail discs are
labeled differently and shipped in a retail box with a big X on the front. Other
sources for retail 10.4 Tiger or 10.5 Leopard may be online via amazon sellers
or computer resellers who handle repaired Macs. Avoid mystery grey label ones
that were intended to be sold and kept with their original computer kits.
    Good luck!

  • I recently went to the Mercy Corps website to donate. On the donation page, the address bar read "Mercy Corp" instead of their web address with the https. ???

That's about it. Was I scammed? When I left-clicked on the page, the address came up with the https prefix.

That's what APDivs do.  This is the single most common problem new people have with web page layouts.  DO NOT use positioning.  You don't need it.  Start over.  Learn to use CSS floats, margins and padding to align elements.
Below is a basic HTML5 Layout.  View source in browser to see the code.

  • Pop Up Ads on Border of Websites?

    Hello,
I have pop up ads that repeatedly appear around the border of many websites. I have ad blocked installed, and that removes the images, but the large black "hide ad" bar still appears, and clicking that brings on more pop-ups.  I hae run a virus and malware scan, and that turned up nothing harmful, so really it's just a nuisance.  If anyone has a solution, I'd be forever greatful. A picture of the problem is below.

You have installed the Downlite, aka VSearch, adware/malware. For more information and removal instructions, see:
    http://www.thesafemac.com/arg-downlite/
Adware like Downlite is often found in groups - I've seen as many as 4 installed by one installer - so you'd be wise to search for any other adware using my Adware Removal Guide, and remove anything else you find.
(Fair disclosure: The Safe Mac is my site, and contains a Donate button, so I may receive compensation for providing links to The Safe Mac. Donations are not required.)

  • How do I stop people from being redirected from my organization's website to another with a similar address and copied content (not a problem on IE or Chrome)?

    My organization's website is: www.wallingfordseniors.org
Many people when using Firefox are being redirected to another website (www.wallingfordsseniors.org) which has lifted our content verbatim. Even when typing in our address, people get sent to the other one. This other website is being operated by an unknown entity and the hosting company has no contact information we can find to send a DMCA violation letter to. Anyway to keep people from going to the other site? For now all the links are the same but we are concerned that they will mess with our link to submit donations and route money to themselves with our donors thinking they are giving to us. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    -Javier

It depends on how it's happening. For example:
    * DNS Server glitch (OS or router level): however, you would expect the same result in all browsers
    * Custom DNS/proxy setting in Firefox - users can check their connection settings as described in this article: [[Advanced settings for accessibility, browsing, system defaults, network, updates, and encryption]] (network mini-tab under Advanced settings)
    * Non-default search engine plugin -- if the user puts a space in the domain -- that doesn't display search results normally: user can make sure Google is selected
    * Hijacked by a browser extension: user can try Firefox's Safe Mode
    * Redirect hacked into your website (in .htaccess or a PHP/JSP/ASPX file under certain circumstances)
Once the wrong address is in Firefox's history, for example from making a typo once, users may find it hard to notice the difference when given autocomplete suggestions.
Hopefully you can track it down.

    1) Padding is only placed on the top and/or bottom of the div. The elements within this div have padding on their sides. This saves you from any "box model math". Keep in mind, if you add any side padding or border to the div itself, it will be added to the width you define to create the *total* width. You may also choose to remove the padding on the element in the div and place a second div within it with no width and the padding necessary for your design.

Look at all the apdiv's you have.  Those are absolutely positioned layers.  I'm assuming by your post that you are very new to Dreamweaver and HTML and CSS.  I would highly recommend not using absolutely positioned layers until you have a better grasp on HTML and CSS.
Looking at your code I would suggest that you consider using one of Dreamweaver's built in, or downloadable templates as a starting point and work from there.

  • Help, how do i find out the host server for a website i have inherited

hi i inherited responcibilty for a website, simply because
there was noone else avalable. i have dreamweaver cs3, but only
about 2 weeks worth of knowledge and experience. I was given info
ie. ftp address and username etc, so have been able to download the
website to my home computer, and have been making updates, now
however i need to find out more about setting up a test server so i
can use dynamic pages, specifically for collecting form
information, collecting donations and selling art work. i will need
some information from the host server to start with, but am unsure
as how to identify and contact them, can anyone help me please. I
am sure it is rudimentary, but the information is essential.
also as a side note, could anyone tell me how to find out
where the websites domain name is regestered ( other than
contacting the original designer, as that seem quite impossible)
because i get the feeling that if all else fails i may be able to
move the website to another host ( not that i now how yet, or even
how to select or find a host) please let me know if any of my
    assumptions are wrong.
    Thanking you in advance

    Hi,
To find out about the host, go to register.com and look up
    the domain name.
When it gives you results, it'll say that the name is already
    taken, but it
will let you do a 'whois' on it.
Those results can give you some info such as the server DNS.
    That may let
    you figure out the host.
Sometimes the technical contact in the whois, is the host as
    well.

  • Seeking an easy way for office staff to update iWeb website

I have created a website in iWeb, hosted by GoDaddy.com, for a nonprofit organization. They would like to be able to keep the text-based information on the site updated regularly (i.e. new member list, calendar of events, etc.). Possibly two or three times per day. I am not able to train their office staff to use iWeb for this purpose. They use PCs. Is there a third party product or widget that will allow a Windows-using office clerk to visit a website or send an email and thereby update text-based information on the website?  I certainly don't want them calling me every time a minor content change is needed.

Some sort of limited access to certain variable text components would be a workable solution, however.
Peter ~ If you’re a Weebly Pro user, you can restrict people’s editing access on Macs and PCs to specific pages:
    Introducing Collaborative Website Editing
    What's included with Weebly Pro?
...There's more about Weebly in THIS post. And here are a couple of non-profit organization sites made with Weebly:
    http://voluntarymedicare.weebly.com
    http://sligoanimalrescue.weebly.com
And this is just a tip: You can edit your post within 15 minutes...
To edit your initial post of a thread, click on the Edit post link in the Actions section at upper right.
To edit your subsequent posts of a thread, click on the Edit link at the bottom of the particular post you want to edit.
...Either way, when done editing, click the blue Update button. Each edit restarts the 15 minute editing window.

  • Most websites, including Mozilla, now have a locked banner at the top of the screen that blocks off some, or much more of my laptop screen, how can I stop this

Apparently we have forgotten how to scroll up to find the search field, donate button, etc. and website "designers" now include a locked banner at the top of your screen that you cannot close but remains in place as you scroll through what remains of the visible field to view half pictures, partial paragraphs, etc. Some of these are enormous, most of a middle size and some are thinner. None are necessary but fit neatly under the heading, "Just because you can does not mean you should." which programmers seem to disregard at will. Is there some way for me to maintain (re-establish) my possession of my desktop when visiting sites? These stupid and obstructive are unneeded and Mozilla ought to be ashamed that I am looking at "Mozilla support" at the upper left of my desktop, yes, I know I am in Mozilla support and haven't forgotten it since I got here, and "ÏNBOX" "Search Mozilla Support" at the upper right of my desktop. I haven't forgotten how to scroll up if I needed to search support, either...

We are simultaneously getting bigger and bigger monitors and smaller and smaller handhelds, so it's a challenge to serve the right page for your display. But I digress...
Those fixed bars are created using the style rule <code>position:fixed</code>. In some cases, the rule is added dynamically when you scroll the page, while in other cases, it is fixed full-time. Because you may actually want some elements to be fixed, it is difficult to create a fix-all solution that will work well for all sites.
For ad hoc page hacking, you could try this extension that allows removal of items using the right-click context menu:
    https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/nuke-anything-enhanced/
Sometimes it might take two clicks to find the outermost element (otherwise, you might leave a blank area instead of getting rid of the whole thing.
Some users use the Adblock Plus extension to hide page elements they don't want to see; I don't have any experience with that.
If there are particular sites you need help with, we might be able to create a custom style rule for you to override the way the page behaves. The best approach depends on exactly how it works.

Thank you for posting on Mozilla Support. We value and appreciate you as a user.
I am able to load and see the pictures fine. You claim that you are using version 3.5 but from the system information that was automatically gathered I can see you are using version 18.

  • Donating an unopened Personal Laserwriter toner cartridge, M0089LLA

I have a new, unopened, toner cartridge for an Apple Personal Laserwriter printer that just died on me and I would like to give it to someone (school or charity) that can use it, instead of throwing it out. Any suggestions?
The toner cartridge is an Apple # M0089 LL/A or an HP # 92275A (they are the same cartridge).
I am willing to mail it, drop it off, or deliver it to anyone / any school that can use this cartridge. I just don't want to trash it if it can be put to good use.
Please help me find a home for this cartridge.
    Thank you.

    bertbarry,
In Spokane, WA, home of the Gonzaga Bulldogs basketball team and the worlds largest Hoopshoot contest, and...and...and... there is a website called 'freecycle' that lets you post offerings. My wife teaches school, wanted a time clock for her classroom and found a dentist that was getting rid of one. All free, the only cost is reading all the requests that get posted. Google freecycle and see if there is one in your area.
I am setting up a sister who teaches near Seattle with a personal laser printer, 300, 310, 360 style. She could use different toner cartridge for printing class handouts for second graders.
I am sure someone closer could use yours. Otherwise, I collect older computers and printers and let kids take them apart and fix them up. They cannot hurt them, they were headed to the dump. If you want to slow boat your cartidge to the other Washington, we would gladly put it to good use.
Post back for more details or notice of success finding a freecycle program near you. : )

More Spokane promotional material: Time magazine printed an article about the organizers of Hoopfest wanting a way to relay scores of games to the central tabulating location. Someone from H/P set up a hot zone for an internet link all through downtown. After the event, no one turned off the connection and people continued to use the free web access. Starbucks and other businesses decided to donate to keep 'free access' and thus was born the first downtown hot zone. ( no I am not on the chamber of commerce, lol)
