Website creation

Hello,
I'm hoping that someone can advise if Dreamweaver is the
correct (and best) program to publish and maintain a website with
files and folders which have been created for us by a graphic
designer using a Mac with Flash and Photoshop. I understand that
the finished work has been able to be previewed as a "web" by the
graphic designer.
Now I need to be able to open this "web" and preview the
content before publishing to the web.
I will also need to be able to edit some of the text before
it's published and also to carry out maintenace in the future.
I am familiar with MS FrontPage however the files and folders
are very different to any I have worked with.
As the files appear to have been created using both Flash and
Photoshop, can Dreamweaver pull it all together? Or alternatively
should I use something else? Would I need all of these programs
i.e. Flash, Photoshop and Dreamweaver?
Thanks for any help with this.
Ken

It will not make any difference that the website was created
with a MAC. You
can do edits with either a MAC or a PC.
Flash... any content except stand alone flash buttons which
can be created
in dreamweaver, requires the flash program (Adobe Flash
version equal to or
higher than that used to create the movie) and the original
flash working
file (the .fla, not the .swf that is viewed on the web) to
perform edits. Be
aware, flash movies can vary greatly in complexity, and may
be very
difficult for a novice to edit.
If your website is primarily html with only limited use of
flash, and the
only edits you need to do are to static text, I recommend you
look at
contribute. You can download a 30 day trial from the Adobe
website.

Is there a good website creation app on the iPad, or should I save up and get a MacBook to use RapidWeaver/iWeb?

Wasn't being condescending, this is a new thead that continues one he already started asking if he could get iWeb on the iPad. Two people explained to him that iWeb was being discontinued (along with MobileMe) and suggested Rapidweaver and two other apps as replacements. It was also explained to him that there were no web creation apps on the iPad because you need to run a local web server, such as Apache, on your computer in order to use them. This is why they work on the Mac because it does have such a server. The iPad does not have one and cannot run one. And I suggested using HTML code if he wanted to develop on his iPad.
You were aware that is how web creation software works?

Do you know a good book on HTML web creation you could recomment to him?

    Dear all,
We are having trouble finding a work-around that allows external suppliers to access our Oracle site without being on the internal client network. The problem is as follows:
After issuing an RFQ, suppliers receive an email with a link to the client RFQ on the Oracle Production site. Clicking the link, suppliers receive an error message saying the link is broken, because they are not on the internal network of the client, and thus cannot access Oracle Production for answering the RFQ.
Oracle sits on the client intranet, and we are looking for something that would allow us to put certain elements (i.e. RFQ) onto the internet for all clients with a username and password to access. If you know of a work-around for this, please contact me asap.

HI, i m new as a muze user for website creation. can anyone plz help me how to start this.

How exactly did you shut down your laptop? Not a hard restart (holding down the power button), I hope... if that's the case, then it is extremely unlikely the file is still intact on your computer. If it is, it would be an image on your RAM, and it is time-and-resource-intensive to recover it if it is even there. RAM memory is disposable and always being written over. Sorry dude...
If it wasn't a hard restart, Keynote should have made a backup, unless you 'Force Close'd it.
It really all depends on how your mac was shut down.

  • Create Template After Website Creation?

I have backed my self into a hole my fellow dreamweavers. You see, I created a website with about 10 pages (its a podcast page - not dynamic, though it should be...). Then I learned about how cool dreamweaver templates are. I know how to make a template, I know about editable regions, and I know how much time templates can save you if you just need to change one thing in the navbar. Right now, if I want to change one thing, I have to copy and paste it to all 10+ pages. But I want to create a template by duplicating the homepage, making the header and navbar and footer non-editable and deleting the body. Then new pages I make I will use the template. However, my problem lies with the pages that have already been created. How do I convert them into being updated by the template? Seems to me there should be an easy way to do this, but maybe most people aren't noobs like me. Is there any way out of this? Thanks in advance.

There is a *pretty* easy way around this:
    1.  Open a non-template controlled page
    2.  Spawn a new child page from your template (you now have two pages open
    3.  Copy content from the old page to the new page
    4.  When done, close the old page, and save the new page over the old page (i.e., with the same name)
This is guaranteed to work with no problems.

  • NEED HELP !!! Client website creation.

I am creating a website for a client (ICE HOCKEY LEAGUE) and trying to figure out how to go about designing the site so that the client can easily manage on their own frequent updates such as STATS, STANDINGS, PICS, etc - ANY SUGGESTIONS or ADVICE ??

Depending on the plan it can go from probably a monthly charge to a flat fee license cost for the platform. Really need to do the research as there are lots of solutions.
It might be able to work with a Muse site, but Muse is very specific in the type of HTML that can be injected into it, without breaking the site. Remember Muse mostly works one way. Design and then export. You would probably create it in Muse, but then add the platform in after the fact depending on the solution.
Do you have a realistic budget that might allow for this to be added to the project from the client?

  • Sharing the iweb website creation between two macs in the same house?

I have an imac. Just purchased a macbook for the wife that arrives tomorrow. She wants to be able to update our website using her imac (a website I've started and maintained on the imac).
My question is...is it possible to "sync" the iweb application or to otherwise let her have access to the same info I see on the imac so she may update the site as well from her own mac?
We are connected in the house via a wireless network.
    Thanks.

  • New to website creation-  question on best application to use

I'm sorry about the off-topic nature of this question. I have some documents that I would like to publish, they have been scanned and are currently in .pdf format, as well as some .jpg pictures, and I also want to write a story around these objects as well, plus add some audio. I have iWeb, but am unsure if this is the best application to use, or given the content of what I would like to place on the website, if there is a better application to use? Any help most appreciated.
    Thanks, Bruce.

    bruceknight wrote:
...if there is a better application to use?
Bruce ~ It's hard to know whether an alternative app is "better" than iWeb for your particular purpose until you've tried it out. Two alternatives worth considering are the free, web-based Weebly — read more in this post:
_Domain file - iWeb becoming a headache_
...and the free Posterous blogging platform which automatically presents PDFs in a convenient viewer (as does Weebly) — see these examples:
    http://dont-panic.posterous.com/pdf-document-example

One general advantage both Weebly & Posterous have over iWeb is that they are constantly being improved with new features — unlike iWeb which hasn't had an update in two years.

  • Workflow of Flash website creation

I am getting back into web design after taking a few years
off, and now that Adobe CS3 has all the tools I use in one place, I
am trying to come up with a workflow of the best way to take my
design from my sketch on a piece of paper to the web. This is kind
of my flow chart right now, but am interested in how others do it.
I like to learn from the best.
Design in Photoshop and save as a .psd file, then import to
stage in Flash. I leave the text "buttons" out of the import, then
re-create in Flash. When I am done, I publish the .swf and the
.html, then upload those files to my web server. Does that sound
about right? Or, would it be better to slice up the image in PS,
then import to Dreamweaver, and insert the Flash?
I did a lot of work with After Effects when I was editing
videos for people, and I was also wondering if I should create
animation using AE, then import that into Flash and save as a
movie? I am much better creating animation in AE then Flash, and I
find it not as frustrating, and I can do a lot more with AE.
I am tasked with creating a web site for a close family
friend for a 50th anniversary. My wife "volunteered" me for this,
which means lots of work, minimal money. Love those! It doesn't
have to be done until January, so I have lots of time to prepare. I
am "storyboarding" this now, but just thought I would ask you guys
the best way to get this published.
    Thanks.

Both ways are good, it only depends on the topic of the site
that you are going to build.

  • Website Creation / Templating Application

Sorry to repost, but I never got any replies to this. Anyone have an ideas on the following?
I recently put together a workflow to grab a folder, copy the folder, ask a user to rename the folder, put the folder in a specfic location on a web server, ask the user if they are finished or if they want to add custom files to the template.
If I run the workflow in automator, it gets to this point, and if I hit "Choose files" it will take me to the next step, I choose files, it adds them to the folder, and the action stops.
When I save this as an application, however, the application will not proceed. In Automator, there is a red "Anything" between these two steps. What am I missing?
Also, is there anyway to pass the name of the new folder I create in a previous step to a step later in the workflow? I am wanting to put the new files in that folder, instead of requesting the user to choose it.
    Thanks

  • Creation of Microsoft Azure Website failed. The application already exists

Trying to create a new website, I get this error:
    Creating Microsoft Azure Website
Creation of Microsoft Azure Website failed. The application already exists. The remote server returned an unexpected response: (409) Conflict.
I succeeded to create this website earlier on and then I deleted it as I didn't need it anymore.
Now I want to create it again but I get this error even though I've deleted all websites, hosting plans, cloud service, etc from my Azure account.
Any idea on how to fix this?

At this point, I don't know how it happened, but we'll need to dig deeper. I believe there is a sequence that can cause problems if you create a site via Current portal and delete it via Preview, but I'm not sure.
BTW, it seems you have 2 other sites that may be in the same situation (deleted in a way that you couldn't recreated them). They're 'shortl...dev' and 't..d' (not giving full name to avoid squatters!). Do you think you'll want to recreate them later? If
so, we can do the same maneuver to get back to a good state.

  • Creating website and changing computers

    Alright,
I am new to website creation and look forward to using iWeb.
    Here is my question:
Currently I have iWeb on a Powerbook G4.
Eventually I intend to buy a MacBook Pro.
If I create a website on my Powerbook, will I encounter problems with access and updating my website when I switch over to a MacBook Pro? I hope to use the same software. If I understand, iWeb is universal. Currently I have 1.1.2
    Thanks
    Powerbook 12" DVI   Mac OS X (10.4.8)
    Powerbook 12" DVI   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

When you eventually get your new computer, just make sure to copy over the iWeb Domain file from the old computer. This single file is all you need to transfer over to preserve your iWeb work from the old computer.
In fact, this file is responsile for keeping all of your iWeb work, so if you haven't already you should start keeping backups of this file whenever you make changes to your site.
The file is located on your hard drive. Look inside the Users/username/Library/Application Support/iWeb/ folder. It should be the only file there. Make a copy of it and put it somewhere safe on a regular basis.

  • New Website Search Engine Results

I have an overly-simplified, single-page website, ourhealthcarecrisis.com and my client wants the text formatted in a way I'm not currently able to provide, mainly because I'm still new to website creation. In order to provide the appearance of his text, I've used a screen capture of the MS Word document he wants me to duplicate. It's not pretty, at least to me, but the appearance pleases the client.
Here's the problem: when he types the name of his website, ourhealthcarecrisis (minus the .com), into Google he doesn't see the results he wants. The only text that comes up, "create the FHIA," is from a previously-uploaded version of the site. I don't know how to "update" the information with Google and it frustrates him that I can't accomplish what he wants.
I know the search engines look for internal text in addition to keywords and meta tags, but for the moment I'm at a loss for options. I understand that formatting the text itself is what should really be done, but at the moment I can't provide it.
Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

I 100% agree that the best choice would be to do the site in HTML...
but I've also had a client that insisted on an image being used instead of recreating the graphics, etc in HTML...sometimes complex images and text font can be difficult to reproduce in plain HTML.
So to the other excellant posters, SnakEyez02, RikRamsay14, and John Waller, I'd like to offer an option that could perhaps provide a happy medium.... use FLASH to represent the image you now have.
WHOA... now before everyone comes crashing down on me... a long time Flash developer... let me explain.
In the same way that there are "Best Practices" for developing an HTML Web site... there are also "Best Practices" for adding Flash to a Web site...(and remember, there is really no such thing as a Flash Web site... only HTML, ASP, PHP Web sites with some Flash content).
Those "Best Practices" (at least in my mind) include using swfobject to add alternate content and navigation for non-Flash browsers.
So as a regular part of adding Flash to a Web site, you would also need to include non-Flash navigation and content... that's just part of using Flash on a Web site... NOT something extra.
The alt content can be any content you can imagine.. for example:
    Links, images, lists, etc...
Full text narration for a Flash video..
Detailed text description matching the text in the image PLUS a detailed description of the graphic elements on the page (NOT picked up in regular HTML)..
    Alternate video format...
    the list goes on.
    For review:
If you think that Flash is somehow bad for SEO, it's time to dispell that MYTH!
If fact, in some circumstances I'll use Flash INSTEAD of just HTML because then I'll have better SEO than with just HTML alone.
    http://www.worldbarefootcenter.com/
The link to World Barefoot Center in the above post is just one example. View the source code and you see a couple paragraphs of text along with regular HTML links.... but what displays is the Flash version of the image and Flash links.
The client provided the artwork for the page... and that's what they wanted to use a .jpg image. Well yes, that could be done in HTML but it would be virtually invisible to Google. So Instead I converted the image into a Flash .swf and used swfobject to display the Flash. swfobject allows you to create alternate content inside the <div> which also holds the Flash .swf, then when the page is loaded it detects if the browser has the Flash pluggin. If it does, it displays just the Flash content, if not, it displays the alternate content. Since almost everyone has the Flash pluggin, for most people the Flash version of the <div> will display.
The alternate content for that <div> can be any regular HTML text, images, media player, links, etc., anything that you would use if you were not using the Flash. Now the best part is that the alternate content can be "over the top" as far as optimizing for SEO, since it will not be seen by most viewers.
Here's another example of SEO with Flash.. again, the page is just a single image provided by the client:
    http://www.ksowetsuits.com/
View the source code. The alt content is paragraph after paragraph of information about the site, including lists and links. If it was just the HTML, it might be kind of a boring Home page. But for SEO I can go "over the top" in promoting the site, since most viewers will never see that part... but it's all indexed by search engines. The end result is BETTER SEO using Flash than just HTML.
On another Web site, a Flash video is displayed, the alt content is the complete text narration of the video. Now how many people would take the time to read that if they could just watch the video instead?? again, better SEO with Flash than without. In fact in one case we had first page search result from that video narration within 4 hours of posting the page.
On still another site with a Flash video, the alt content is another video, but a .mov version, which will, in effect play Flash video on the iPhone (not possible you say??). Well since the iPhone does not have Flash pluggin, it simply displays the .mov version of the video, while everyione else sees the Flash version.
So anyway, if Flash is a part of your Web development, you should look into using swfobject and alternate content.
