Website Media Player Question

I just got an iPod Touch and have it hooked to my Wi-Fi network at home. I was playing around with Safari going to different websites and such. I was checking a radio station website and went to the listen live link but the media player never opens. I get the advertisements and such but no player. I tried the site on my home computer and it works fine. Do I need to download a driver or something to listen to websites like that?

Thanks for the info, but the website uses Windows Media Player for the audio on the site. I don't think it uses Adobe Flash since when I right click on the player it gives me Window Media Player options instead of Adobe Flash options.

Quicktime and windows media player question??

i have sent a quicktime file of a spot i did for a client, they like it and have uploaded it to their website, but they are getting some that say they can not view it because they only use windows media player, i know this maybe a stupid question but how can i send them a copy they can use in media player so they have both?? thanks for you help!!!

you can buy and use the WMV Studio windows media export components from Flip4Mac which wil allow you to export to a windows media format directly from FCP and other suitable QT compliant apps ...
or you can copy the file over onto your own quicktime enabled PC and use the free, and much faster, windows media encoder there.

Certain websites media player wont work after installing Firefox V4

After installing Firefox Version 4 the media player of certain website fails to start and stream normally. I have updated all the needed plugins and add ons and still have the same issue. I have created a Mozilla account and downloaded Spark and my Spark says invalid username or password when trying to login to Spark to start a chat session

Flip4Mac / Windows Media Player question..

My husband subscribes to a service that allows him to hear audio commentary for his favorite Scottish football team. It requires the latest version of Windows Media Player though. I was thinking that Flip4Mac might be the answer, but when I tested it out, it gave me this message "Flip4Mac WMV is unable to play DRM protected content".
Does this mean he is out of luck and can only listen to his games on a PC? (He's really angry with me for switching us to the world of Mac).

Content providers can protect Windows Media files from unauthorized playback by using a technology called digital rights management (DRM). A Windows Media file that has been assigned digital rights is called a "protected," or "licensed," or "secured" file.
To play a protected file, you must obtain a license (a kind of electronic key) from the content provider. In many cases, the Player can acquire a license for you automatically when you attempt to play the file. In other cases, the content provider may not issue you a license until you pay a fee or provide additional information, such as your e-mail address.
Content providers can issue several different versions of DRM licenses; however, Windows Media Player 9 for Mac OS X only supports version 1 licenses. This means that you might be able to play some protected files, but not others.
We have informed our content partners about this issue so that they can decide whether to offer version 1 licenses to their customers who use Macintosh computers.

Blu-ray ripping, authoring, media player questions

OK, what are the best apps out there?
Playing blu-ray DVD audio:
I want to send multichannel surround sound to my audio interface. It needs to stay full resolution (eg. 24/96) - no downsampling! (Yes, I'm aware of how to do this with a DAW which is how I currently listen to DVDA content)
Ripping blu-ray DVD audio:
Simple. Rip the full res multichannel audio files to either individual wav files or a multichannel wav file.
Authoring blu-ray DVD audio:
Author stereo and surround audio files to the blu-ray format from individule high res files (L,R for stereo; Lf,C,Rf,Ls,Rs,Lfe for 5.1 surround). Only interested in PCM digital. Not dts or dloby.
I'm only interested in the high res stereo and multichannel surround audio. I don't watch movies much and could care less about those features.
Serious replies only please. Responses to anyone suggesting converting the audio to CD or mp3 quality will be vicious!

Any BR-DVD to be ripped would be purchased and owned by me. I am not interested in any way in purchasing a restricted hardware disc player. Here in the 21st century we serve music and video (at the highest quality) to our sound/video systems from the computer. Thank you.
PSS. Yeah, I know I should ignore blu-ray and treat it as a nitch fly-by-night thing. Unfortunately audio content is starting to be released by some in this format only. And they're being encouraged by folks buying the restricted hardware DVD players. So here we go...

I've gotten some recommendations for tsMuxeR and Pavtube for rippers.
I've also been warned about Toast10 for authoring. It has a bug will not let you do PCM surround.
I'd still like to hear a recommendation for a good authoring app.

Question about media player files on websites

Hi, I'm a mac newbie (3days now) and loving it. Starting to think why did I wait so long. Anyway exuse me if my question sounds dumb. Sometimes when I'm on websites windows media files won't show up. Do I need some type of download or plugin?

Well those are both odd. Office programs would not open anymore even though Flip4Mac did NOT install?
I have Mac OS X 10.3.9, QuickTime 7.0.4 and Office 2004 - and I haven't seen those problems.
Try logging in as a different user (if you don't have another user account, you can create one Apple menu > System Preferences > Accounts > + ) and see if Office apps work in that account and also if the Flip4Mac installer works there. If it works there, then you have some preference file weirdness in your own user's Library folder.
If Flip4Mac still won't install, you could also try manually removing the Windows Media Player browser plug-ins from (your hard drive)/Library/Internet Plug-ins and / or try installing the older version 1.0.2 of WMV Player. The link is at the bottom of this page:

Then try reinstalling the newer 2.0.2 version if that worked.

I use to be able to click on a link in a website to watch a video and it would launch windows media player. I have installed the plugin but it still will not launch

Windows Media player will not launch from a video link within a website. it worked until I installed FF4. I did install the plug in but still nothing it just goes to a black then blank page when you try to launch the video.

After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...

Then let it do all 6 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 6 things it does are...
Correct any Disk problems.
Repair Permissions.
Clear out Cache Files.
Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
Trash old Log files.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files! :-)
Disconnect the USB cable from any Uninterruptible Power Supply so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.
Then... Try putting these numbers in Network>TCP/IP>DNS Servers, for the Interface you connect with...

Then Apply. For 10.5/10.6 Network, highlight Interface>Advanced button>DNS tab>little + icon.
DNS Servers are a bit like Phone books where you look up a name and it gives you the phone number, in our case, you put in apple.com and it comes back with 17.149.160.49 behind the scenes.
These Servers have been patched to guard against DNS poisoning, and are faster/more reliable than most ISP's DNS Servers.
The Interface that connects to the Internet, needs to be drug to the top of System Preferences>Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations and checked ON.
10.5.x/10.6.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.

What product do you have that can help me download a sermon from a church website. I want to be able to play the video on a cd with the media player. I don't have Internet at home.

That is a Flash object with a JWplayer that plays an rtmp steam.

Windows Media Player, since installing Firefox 4 I cannot click on a link in my website to play a video. I have gone through the procedure for downloading the new plug in and it still won't play this is the link I downloaded from

Sorry to hear about your problems. For a long time I and a colleage were having an issue with our MBP's. When we closed the lid, we thought it was going to sleep, then and hour later when you opened it, it would be all hot and the battery was drained etc. Turns out it wouldn't go to sleep. For a while we remedied the problem by going to the apple menu and hitting sleep then shutting the lid, but after some process of elimination, it turned out that a little freeware app called Desktopple that we used in presentations and etc. . . was the culprit. as soon as I took that app off, Both of our machines started sleeping like babies!!!
Morale of the Story! Sometimes it's a 3rd party app causing the problem.
Desktopple worked fine until one of the OSX updates happened, then it started causing this problem. My suggestion is that you disable these small freeware type apps one by one until you find the source of the problem.
I have a hard time believing that you were given 3 lemons in a row. It's gotta be something that your running.

In need of a flash/html5/quicktime audio/video media player for a website

Hello everybody,
I'm looking to get some kind of audio/video media player for a website. I would like it to be customizable, and also most likely read a play list from some kind of text file or xml file.
Normally, I would look for some kind of flash media player, but recently the site might be read from Apple mobile devices also, which of course not flash which might be a problem, so I'm also looking into other options such as some kind of QuickTime media player web application or even html5 player.
I do not personally know how to code in flash or HTML 5, so I would be willing to hire someone to help out.
Is HTML 5 for long enough that it would play on most current browsers? I would imagine that HTML 5 might not work on older browsers–is this correct?
I don't know of any QuickTime media players - any links to get me started?
Does anyone know some solutions to this flash / apple issue?

Looks like you are getting a very good lesson in why Flash is the best choice for a Web media player.... plentilful, easily customizable, and is a "right now" solution. Good luck on getting your viewers to download and install the codex need to play an Ogg video!
To add the extra accessabilty for the iPhone etc, use swfobject to provide an alternative video file type... the .mov
Here is an example of a Flash video that plays on the iPhone (well sort of..):

Using swfobject for Flash detection, if the Web browser has the Flash plugin, the Flash .flv video is displayed, if not, the QT, .mov version is displayed.

If the Web browser does not have the Flash plugin, alternate content is displayed, which in this case happens to be a QT player, which displays a .mov video. In this case it's just a single video. Now maybe you have a QT player with playlist... but let me tell you.. they are a lot rarer than Flash media players with playlists, xml playlist, etc.... Strong case for Flash here..
But your alt content could just as easily hold a QT media player (with playlist) if such an animal exists.

Windows Media Player for audio on one website does not load?

I have Firefox v8.01, Windows 7 OS. On one of my websites, the Windows Media Player does not load. The audio works on IE9 but not on Firefox. I have used the same code on other sites that work just fine in Firefox, IE and Chrome. I can't fix the problem because I don't know where the problem lies? I have disabled all my Firefox add-ons which provided no solution. The site is http://www.music.articleposts.com This is a blog site and the sound code is in a widget.

You're welcome If I may say, you have tried everything is too broad a statement when trying to get help we need to know what you have tried.
Have you tried a freshly created test account? See this doc, on how, if you haven't see this on 10.4 & Adding a new user account to your computer, this helps to show if this is a problem isolated to your username account or system wide.
Do you have the plugin components mentioned?
Are you running 3rd party Safari extending applications?
Has Flip4mac ever worked for you?
Post a Url of the video you are trying to watch, or an example of similar would help, so we may try it.
Can you view Youtube & google vids?
• If those are your correct specs you show your os is extremely behind, missing all the fixes
the subsequent os updates & security updates offer. If they are incorrect please take a sec, to correct, adding the size of drive & ram would help as well

Look at A. Brodys post on how to update properlya. Brody now that 10.4.6 is out lets review..albeit it os 10.4.6 it still applies up to 10.4.10, his is the first post, ( this was the start of the double boot after os update.)

• Note that your problem sounds different then the original posters problem, he doesn't speak of freezing, you are running a ppc ibook he a Macbook on 10.4.10.

On certain websites, when opening a wmv file it will open as an ascii file, instead of the microsoft media player.

this website used to work at one time. What could cause this. This may have happened after upgrading to Firefox 4.0, but I am not sure. I am using Windows XP. I have checked that I have the latest media player plugin installed.

Clear the cache and the cookies from sites that cause problems.
"Clear the Cache":
* Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Offline Storage (Cache): "Clear Now"
"Remove the Cookies" from sites causing problems:
* Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"
If the file is opened in Firefox as a text (ASCII) file then that means that the HTTP response header specify a content type text/plain instead of a content type that identifies the file as a media file. That can be a problem with that website, but another possibility is that security software like a firewall has changed the response headers as a security precaution because that content isn't trusted.
A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.<br />
Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process.

Websites such as cnn.com and foxnews.com as well as many others offer video clips for viewing, but they require use of a flash media player. Is it possible to play such clips on an IPhone and, if so, how?

I've bought my new Macbook and am now noticing that I can't do many things I used to do. For example, I can't watch the videos on CNN.COM because the site (and many others I frequent) use windows media. Is there an option for us Intel Mac people to use for viewing these websites? Thanks.

Right now, no, there is no solution. Microsoft recently stopped distributing their own Windows Media Player program for Mac OS X and bought a company that created software that allows Apple's own QuickTime Player to play Windows Media files. This software has worked very well for PowerPC users. They're working on an Intel-specific version, but it's not quite ready yet. You can find out some more here:
