Website shortcuts on desktop blank icons

Updated from version 36.x to 37, drag URL to desktop and get a blank page "icon" instead of usual shortcut with faveicon for the site. Fresh install of Version 37 does not, and never does, create
shortcutCache folder in user profile.
Problem verified on 4 separate PCs. 2 PCs using Kaspersky, 1 using Avast, 1 using Avira, so not AV related. 2 have Chrome, 2 have no Chrome, so not conflict related.
Pref file is set to default in browser.shell.shortcutFaveicons, true.
Very, very frustrating.

Is there a bug report number or link in Bugzilla? Totally clean install of today's release on a VM that's totally OOB state produces blank page shortcuts on desktop. That's really bad, should be high priority

Since updating to Firefox 4.0.1 I have a problem with the website shortcuts I have on on desktop. I have a few of these shortcut to website I use a lot. When I click on the short I get the message "windows cannot find [then the web address] make sure you typed the name correctly, then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search." I tried deleting the shortcut and setting it up again but still get the message.

Try to redo the default browser and make another browser like IE the default browser and then let Firefox do it again.

Why do I get a files icon and a Firefox icon when I save a website to my desktop?

When ever I save a website to my desktop I usually get two icons that show up on my desktop. One of the icons is the link to the website the other is a file folder filled with a bunch of files that I don't recognize. If I delete the file folder icon the website icon deletes as well. I have not had this issue before until recently.
Is there a way to save the website to my desktop without the files icon showing up as well?
It really clutters things up.
I am using Windows 7.

My bookmarks have lost all attached data, and just appear as blank icons. I have tried to delete the blank icons, but it will not let me. I have also tried to type in the website address and re-save it again, but i will nto let me.

How to save a website shortcut to the desktop

In Microsoft IE you simply go to File and Send "shortcut to desktop." How can I do this in Firefox?

You can drag the favicon on the left end of the location bar onto the desktop to create a shortcut.
You can also use an extension.

If you drag a link or favicon on the left end of the location bar onto the desktop to create an internet shortcut then that shortcut gets the icon of the default browser. 
If you want a different icon (favicon) then you have to assign that icon yourself to the desktop shortcut (right-click: Properties). 
You can usually get the favicon if you append "favicon.ico" to the main domain of a website (e.g. http://www.mozilla.com/favicon.ico ) to display the favicon in a tab and save that image to a folder or see if you can find it in "Tools > Page Info > Media".

I was just wondering if anyone knew how to save a website to the desktop so i can just click on it from there to open it.

Safari-File-Save As... choose 'format- webarchive' saves the whole page in a special format, or just drag the icon from the address bar to desktop/dock/anywhere if you only want a shortcut to open the original page

File server blank icons need help!

Whe have a File server, but when we search for our file on our desktop or server the icons only show blank and we cant open them. If we don't search and go to the path we can open them without a problem. Does someone know how to fix the blank icon?

Playlists are not stored in the iPhone backup file (there's only one backup file kept, in any case, unless you manually copy and archive the file).
Playlists, like other iTunes content (music/videos/apps) are synced to the iPhone from iTunes. If the playlist is not on your iPhone, and not in iTunes, it is most likely gone.

I had Leopard. I jumped to Mountain Lion. Sorry sorry sorry I did.   Many things are stupidly difficult to do, minor tasks, that once were EASY.
I USED to be able to go onto a website, then DRAG AND DROP the ICON from it ONTO my desktop. NO MORE.   Frankly, there is NOW no easy way that I've found ..........May I also say, Mountain Lion is one horrendous piece of ........##@@!!!.   I gave my old iMac to a friend after upgrading it for her...with Mountain Lion.   I wish to God I'd not tormented her with that OSX. I wish to God I'd not tormented myself with it on my own iMac.

I realize my post made me appear UNcalm. Sorry. I am rather irritated by this and have been.
When I now go to any website, I can only go on it by clicking FULL page. In other words, I can get to it by 2 ways, by putting it into the "google" bar, or by FULL screening to type in http....www....etc.
I am then in Full screen to access any website. THEN,   I can no longer drag/drop the website's Icon to my desktop.......If I diminish, I lose the website. It may bring up the same site, but will not let me drag the site's icon ONTO my desktop to use in the future.
That seems to have disappeared with Mountain Lion. I was able to do it with ease on Leopard.
Repeat:
In Leopard, I would go to a website and could drag that website's icon ONTO my desktop. Period.
I am no longer able to do this with Mountain Lion.
If I try to drag anything, NOTHING happens OTHER than it replicates the page...it does not place an icon on my desktop to use in the future.
I am CALM. I AM frustrated.

Photos are there but the videos are appearing as blank icons with an error message after the upgrade to Yosemite

I bought myself a new MacBook Pro and migrated everything from a Time Capsule/Time Machine migration. My previous computer was slowly dying so I had backed it up although it was running Mavericks. I migrated everything to the new computer from a Time Machine backup - all my photos and files are there - but in iPhoto, the videos (taken with a camera as .MOV files which usually appear in iPhoto) are appearing as blank icons. When I click on them, I get the error message, "The operation couldn’t be completed. (OSStatus error -54.)" and the video doesn't play or appear. The video does, however, appear when I click on "Reveal in Finder - Original File" - so the files are there - they just aren't being compatible with my iPhoto in Yosemite.
Any idea why?

Do you still have access to the old system? If so drag the iPHtoo library on the new system to the desktop and Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc) or use an external hard drive formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.

Some Blank Icon's on server after logic board replaced.

I have two identical mirror Drive G4s running 9.2.2 . They access files on a Windows 2003 server. In each folder is a PhotoShop Tiff file, a Quark File and an Illustrator ESP file.
The G4's don't have Illustrator or Quark on them locally. When the folder is opened on the server the file Icons showed up correctly. The main G4 had a bad Logic board that was replaced, ever since that the PhotoShop files on the server appear as type of or kind "document" and have BLANK ICONs. The files appear normally on the backup machine. I did the desktop re-build and that didn't make any diff. Trashed the system and finder prefs.
This all worked before I replaced the logic board. Any Ideas or suggestions on how to fix this. Thanks in advance.

Hi, Rick -
Try copying the files to the hard drive on the machine not displaying the correct icons. Then restart it. If that brings the icons back, you should then be able to throw the copied files away if you don't want to retain them there.

On Finder Freeze/Relaunch All my desktop files & icons disappear

The title sums it up.
When ever my mac decides to go into spinning wheel mode and I have to force quit/relaunch finder, when I relaunch finder every desktop file & icon disappear.
At that point I'm forced to push the shutdown button on the tower and reboot, then all is well until the next time.
And the next time could be a day or a few days or a week. No rhyme or reason why.
Please help me solve this frustrating problem.

Cloud backup plans can slow your Mac down, and if used simultaneously with your Mac's networking, or you have an unreliable internet connection, could be the cause of your freezes. You may be better off seeing if turning off iCloud temporarily helps. This can especially be a problem with non-Apple routers whose firmware may not be up to date. Multitasking with backups can lead to corruption of your backups. Time Machine should only backup to hard drives twice the capacity of the original, otherwise it spends a lot of time trying to discover which archives to eraes to maintain room. Energy Saver can also create problems for backups, as it takes a moment for the Mac to recognize the connection. Use screen saver instead of Energy Saver when backing up. System Preferences lets you control both. Putting hard drives to sleep when backing up is ill advised.
