Website Updates DNS issues

My company had someone add a word press section to their website.
Externally I can ping the domain name without WWW, but internally I can only ping it with WWW in front.
The IP address of the site has stayed the same, but I believe the developer has set it up to only be accessible without the www in front of it.
What do I add in terms of DNS records to make the domain name ( domain.com) pingable
( again www.domain.com is pingable, domain.com is not)

Hello,
in your domain DNS zone you could create an A record named "www" without quotes and point it to the ip address of the web server.

  • Dynamic DNS updates and issues with re-imaged / replaced machines with the same computer name

Our AD team gets asked frequently to delete bad DNS entries because a computer was replaced or VDI was re-created, and when it was joined to the domain it had the same computer name but different SID, so the DNS entry for that computer can no longer be updated
to a new IP address because the new computer doesn't have rights to update that object in DNS.
I recently saw a resolution to this was to set the security for DNS to allow updates from "Domain Computers" as described in the KB below.
    http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2005210
Has anyone done this?  Any negative implications from this?
    Thanks

Granting all domain computers write access to all records in the dns zone does solve the problem. On the negative side, DNS security is reduced significantly. For example, any user with admin rights locally on his/her computer will be able to sabotage
services in your domain by deleting or changing host records of domain controllers, servers or other client computers.
A more secure solution in this case will be configuring DHCP servers to update DNS on behalf of the client and granting DHCP servers appropriate access to DNS zone. Take a look at
Configuring Secure Dynamic Update for more info.

  • DNS in DHCP Pool (Internal DNS issue)

I know that we can setup multiple DNS server under DHCP pool. But I like to make sure the order.
    I have multiple branch offices.
Let us say that Branch 1 office has a router with 10.30.1.1 as default gateway.
Our internal DNS is 10.0.0.1 and 10.0.0.2 as Pri and Sec.
My order of DNS server is like below.
    1. gateway
    2. internal DNS
    3. public DNS provided by ISP
I saw couple of issues that when I put internal DNS first. Particular situation is when IPsec is not working, users could not access internet through domain name because they had internal DNS which is not reachable.
But, when gateway is first order, I am not sure whether user are able to access internal website because gateway DNS doesn't have internal DNS records.
So, my question is that. what should be the best order for DNS setup under DHCP among default gateway, internal DNS and public DNS?  Our current setup doesn't have even gateway address, it only has internal DNS addresses only.
    ip dhcp pool ccp-pool1
    network 10.30.1.0 255.255.255.0
    domain-name test.org
    default-router 10.30.1.1
    netbios-name-server 10.30.1.1
    dns-server  10.30.1.1 10.0.0.1 10.0.0.2 24.25.5.60

    Thank you, Richard.
You are right. when I setup router IP for DNS server in DHCP pool. it did not work.
Let me ask regarding external DNS forwarding.
I like to know the process of exteranl DNS.
User --> Internal website --> OK with internal DNS
User --> External website --> Internal DNS forwarding to External DNS
We have our own external DNS (ns), in this case, if external DNS (ns) is down, every branch users are not able to resolve any external IP because internal DNS can't get reply from external DNS?
    2nd question)
IPsec is split-tunneled, but in this case, every DNS request goes internal DNS which is located in HQ and goes back through IPsec? Usually Split tunnel doesn't go internet traffic through IPsec but internet directly.
    3rd Question)
what is for ip name-server x.x.x.x   when I setup ip name-server 8.8.8.8 and I tried to ping 8.8.8.8 from router, it didn't work. Am i missing something?

Thanks for your time and knowledge.

  • DNS Issues with Time Capsule - DNS Proxy periodically dies

hi all .... looking for some suggestions
I have a time capsule 1TB, connected to a linksys adsl modem in bridge mode, with the TC acting as DHCP server for my local clients. In the PPPoE settings I also enter the primary and secondary addresses for DNS that my ISP supplied.
I am able to successfully connect to the internet, and all clients successfully pick up an IP address, and each client picks up the TC as the DNS proxy. Everything works perfectly as it should.
Usually once per day, there seems to be a slight hickup with the internet connection (hard to tell whether I am losing the PPPoE or some other issue). When this happens, the PPPoE connection remains active, as I am able to access anything on the internet from an IP level. However, the DNS proxy service on the TC seems to die and as a result, all internet browsing fails. If I reboot the TC, everything comes back to normal. If I dont reboot, the only way to get browsing working is to manually enter the DNS IP address from ISP into the client PCs. However, this is a manual fix that I should not have to perform.
Looking for advice and guidance. Seems like a bug but I cant tell. If I was able to set the DHCP server to pass out the ISP supplied addresses that would also work, but I cant.

Just got off the phone with support for this very same problem. DNS Proxy is definitely dying in the TC, looks like a firmware issue to me.
This is the 3rd TC I'm on. First was a 500GB, had this problem, replaced it under warranty at Apple's direction, replacement did the same, just upgraded this weekend to 1GB, and same issue still. All on 7.3.2 firmware.
TC 1TB, PPPoE to my ISP, ISP's DNS Servers listed in the PPPoE config in the TC.
When a host gets DHCP from the TC the only DNS returned is the TC itself, since it proxies the ISP DNS servers.
Once every day or two, the DNS proxy dies. local network works, and I can add my ISP's DNS addresses in my host config and I have DNS again, but this is definitely something dying in the DNS proxy in the TC.
Just for kicks trying to switch from my ISP's DNS servers to OpenDNS now since someone said that worked for them, but I am not hopeful... I don't see this as a host DNS issues at all.
The dead proxy is very clear:
    $ nslookup apple.com. 192.168.1.1 # that's the TC
    Server: 192.168.1.1
    Address: 192.168.1.1#53
    ** server can't find apple.com: SERVFAIL
    $ nslookup apple.com. 208.67.222.222 # that's OpenDNS
    Server: 208.67.222.222
    Address: 208.67.222.222#53
    Non-authoritative answer:
    Name: apple.com
    Address: 17.149.160.49
I replaced a linksys router with the TC and am kind of unhappy that a $500 router dies every couple of days. My cheapo Linksys router never needed to be restarted, it only ever got rebooted once every year or so when the house lost power long enough for the UPS to run out of battery.
Help us out here Apple, I replaced a $50 router with a $500 because I like the flavor of your kool aid, and this thing dies every day or two. Even if you can't fix why the proxy is dying every couple of days, can you please at least update the firmware to maybe restart the proxy if it quits working?

  • ITunes not responding due to DNS issues?

iTunes 11.1.0.126 on Windows 7, never had a problem in the past 5 years... iTunes runs 24/7 on this machine. It has been running for days since my last reboot, maybe a week. I was listening to a podcast, then went into the store to search for an artist, clicked on an album, listened to preview, back button, different album, preview, back button, different album, etc then one time when I clicked the back button iTunes became unresponsive until I had to kill it.
I can no longer open iTunes, it always opens as a transparent window with a border and is immediately "Not responding" in task manager. Same thing happens in safe mode. I tried rebooting too.
Around this time I started noticing other problems with my internet connection. Seems like my provider is having DNS issues because certain websites hosted on the east coast won't load, but west coast websites will (I am on the west coast). I tried loading these websites on my phone through cell data and they worked, so I figured my provider is having problems.
Now I'm wondering if iTunes calls home or tries to make some sort of connection when it loads, regardless of safe mode or not, and this causes the application to hang immediately. Does anyone know anything about this, or how I might be able to get the iTunes application to run again?

Well, it wasn't a DNS issue, it was a routing issue that affected ISP customers in half of the country. https://community.shaw.ca/thread/9284?start=0&tstart=0
I can confirm that iTunes will now open and is functional. It seems that if the application can't access some internet resource immediately when it launches it will immediately lock up and never come back! No offline mode??!?!

  • Internet DHCP/DNS issues with WRT1900ac

I've had a WRT1900ac now for about 2 weeks and the problems seem to be escalating.  Need help.  And yes, I've already read dozens of threads about these issues and nothing seems to be working.
Most of the problems seem to be centered around this DHCP/DNS issue that so many have been reporting.
    First, the symptoms:
Galaxy S4 phones when connected via wifi have some apps that don't update (facebook and google play)
Some computers (both Win 7) will connect to the network just fine, both wired and wireless - but won't be able to get to the internet
I've spent the last 2-3 days of my life reading forums and trying all sorts of things to get this to work properly (like my old router) and I'm still stuck.  Some things I've tried:
Firmware is up-to-date (latest version: 1.1.8.164461)
Manually assigned static DNS in router config settings (connectivity -> local network) to various combinations including the router address, 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4, 75.75.75.75, 75.75.76.76 (I have comcast), OpenDNS addresses, etc.  I read that the router address is not needed, so I stopped including it.
I manually assigned IPs and DNS on the Galaxy S4 phones and that seemed to work... but also seems unnecessary.
I've reserved DHCP addresses on the computers in question, that didn't seem to work, I also manually set DNS on one of the comupters (can't on the other... long story/not my computer) and that worked for a while and then stopped working.
The only way to get one of the computers on the internet now is to turn on the guest network (even though the computer is hard wired to the router), connect, and then the wired network works.  No clue why this is, but my guess is that it needs the guest network for DNS, then it fails back over to the wired network.  Once that happens, I can actually turn off the wifi on the computer and everything works great... until I reboot.  Key point: I can't change any settings on that box other than entering in SSID/passphrase info for the wireless connection.  I can connect to the regular (non-Guest) wifi just fine - I just can't ever get to the internet.
I've tried massaging DHCP settings on the router until I'm blue in the face - Static DNS, reserving DHCP addresses, hell I even put one of the computers in the DMZ to see if that would work and it still can't connect to the internet (it's worth noting that with my old router, Linksys WRT310N, the setup was literally plug-and-play - no hassle with any of this).
I've tried countless router reboots, factory resets, turning off my modem and router for 2+ minutes, and nothing is working.
I even read somewhere that if you modify your DHCP settings at all that the WRT1900ac stops doing DNS properly and breaks, so I even tried several "hard" factory resets and used all the default DHCP/DNS settings.  And it worked... for a few hours.
Seriously, I'm at my wit's end.  I'm out a lot of money on this thing and it's been one headache after another.  Please help.

I think for most people its a bad idea to hold out that hope, lol. It seems like a great piece of hardware but if you really need a router and don't want to have to 'play' with it, its probably not a good choice. I have an EA6900 that I am very happy with but it has the same restrictions as far as DNS and I really hate the idea that I am forced to use the smartwifi portal. I would really like for them to give me a choice of the old gui or the new one and let ME decide. Lots of routers to choose from out there now and new ones seem to be coming out all the time so do some reading and see if something suits you better. Good luck!

  • Windows 2012 RDS on hyperV - DNS issue

Strange issue, whilst fiddeling arround with some certificates on the connection broker and eventualy rolling back the snapshot I was unable to contact my RD session host.
When I try to connect through RD Web Access it gives me an untrusted certificate (which is correct) and after accepting this it seems to hang in a loop, just trying to connect for ever.
    Looking at the CB I found some DNS issue;
    Event 8014, DNS Client Events
The system failed to register pointer (PTR) resource records (RRs) for network adapter with settings:..... (correct settings)
The reason the system could not register these RRs during the update request was because of a system problem. You can manually retry DNS registration
So I ran a ipconfig /registerdns but that gives me the same error.
I removed the connection broker from the domain and added it again. Upon moving it to a workgroup the entry on the DNS server was removed, when adding it back into the domain it appeared again. So it kind of works.
What I noticed, after removing it from the domain and adding it again, the RDP connection failed to find the server but didnt try to connect indefinatly. Once I ran ipconfig /registerdns I was back to the beginning, just trying to connect and nothing happens.
So it had some sort of effect.
I'm still unable to setup a connection to my session hosts.
    Anyone??

  • 4g dns issue

I have been having this issue for three wewks now.  Got a new HTC m8.  Worked great
Then it did some updates.  Before my email was working via mail app and my hosting company.
after update it always has a connection timeout and will not get mail but ONLY on data network
    Works fine on WiFi
So its not a settings issue
After a lot of time and energy with my hosting company it is clear it's a dns issue but you can't change dns servers on data??  So I cant get emails while on data which is the whole reason I have this phone
Verizon tech support is useless and pretend (or worse aren't pretending) they don't know what dns is
    Please help!!

Unfortunately I have I have already tried third party apps, safe mode, reboots, etc ….
This is not an issue with the mail server, or email software.
The issue is 100% everytime when using over data, and after doing PING and traceroute
testing it is a specific DNS issue not on the part of my hosting company, but rather on Verizon’s side.
The tech support rep seemed to play dumb, or weren’t playing, when I told them it was a DNS issue they didn’t seem to know even what I was talking about.
    Works FINE on Wifi.
    Data network only.
I would change my DNS server, but doesn’t seem possible on Data Network??

  • Internet connections have trouble "grabbing on": is this a DNS issue?

Setup: late 2009 iMac, Mountain Lion 10.8.3, using Wifi through an Airport Extreme. A Windows laptop, two iPhones, and an iPad all use the Wifi with no problems at all.
On the iMac: I suspect it's a DNS issue, although I don't know how to confirm that for all the issues. Often, in Safari, the blue bar will progress a bit and get nowhere - maybe a few minutes later the site will appear. Repeatedly hitting refresh seems to be a faster way of reaching the site. Chrome often tells me "DNS lookup failed": once again, refreshing several times will usually get me to the site.
The issue comes and goes, and has been doing so for the past few weeks I think. It's not as if I've lost the internet connection - I always get the connection, but sometimes it takes a while. It doesn't seem to be time-based: one minute fine, next minute a problem, next minute fine.
I live in Taiwan: this issue MAY be less serious with Taiwanese websites (just now I opened a .tw site instantly, while bbc.co.uk is hanging), but it seems to happen with everything.
But the problems aren't just in browsers: in iTunes, when refreshing podcasts, the behavior is similar: the little rotating arrows can keep going forever, as if no connection is being made at that particular moment. Ditto when downloading a podcast: it sits at nothing downloaded, often until I hit pause and resume a few times, at which point it downloads with good speed. Similar when refreshing NetNewsWire, and Twitter, and Mail. Do DNS issues also happen with iTunes and RSS? (Sorry if that's a dumb question - I'm way out of my depth here, and hadn't even heard of DNS until a couple of days ago.)
Results from Speedtest.net are consistently good (download in the range of 40 Mbps, upload in the range of 10 Mbps, ping 7ms) - once I can actually get to the website, which as with all other websites, can sometimes involve repeated hangs and hits of refresh/reload. Note that there has never been a hang when actually trying to test with Speedtest (just when getting to the site): that points to DNS issues as well, right?
The Wifi bar indicator at the top of the screen is always at full strength.
I've tried things mentioned in different threads here, and also at this page...
    http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/26616/dns-not-resolving-on-mac-os
... but so far nothing seems to help.
Can anyone advise on what the problem actually is, and how I can go about fixing it? Thanks in advance!

Hmm. Maybe this has been resolved now - thanks!
First step: I checked the Network / Wifi Advanced / DNS, and found two DNS servers listed: I just reversed the order of the two, and after clicking "Apply", nothing changed. Still the same issue.
Second step: looked on the iPad, Settings / Wi-Fi, and found the DNS listed there: and then I added that same number (10.0.1.1 - the iPhone has the same DNS) to the DNS server list on my iMac, at the top of the list. For the moment, everything is working very well, including far faster iTunes Podcast Refresh than I've seen in ages.
I'll check back in later to confirm the problem has indeed gone away, and I'm not just having a good ten minutes.
Where would those DNS Servers have come from? Does my ISP somehow automatically install them, or did I type them in back in the mists of time?

  • DNS issues Infinity 2

So, over the last few days I have seen a steady increase in "page not found" errors.  The websites involved seem to be fairly random.
in simple terms, some URLs are resolved to a page and others are not.
ive rebooted the Homehub and modem, and this provides some temporary respite before the problem recurs.
i read elsewhere on the forums that some people are affected by similar probleparticularly rely on the EA online games, but wanted to flag that the issue is more prevalent.
anyone else getting issues or just me?
    cheers

Been having DNS issues as well the last few days. Very frustrating when I need to submit coursework online for a deadline, yet can't access my Uni's servers. Strange thing is, it's intermittent and only seems to affect one device on my WiFi at a time. First it was my laptop, while my phone, 2nd laptop, Xbox and flatmate's laptop were working perfectly. Once I got my laptop working, my flatmate's DNS failed as he tried to submit the same coursework assignment. Today everything is working apart from my phone. There doesn't seem to be any obvious link as to what's causing it...

  • DNS Issues with Hyper-V 2012 R2 VDI Pooled Desktop Deployment

    Good afternoon all!
We are running a POC VDI deployment on a Nutanix system, and I am having a DNS issue. I would appreciate some help trying to figure this out. Two situations that are causing issues that I can see:
    1. VMs go into a saved state if not being used: This in itself is not an issue, and I see it as a way to save resources not being used; however, if a VM is saved for a few days, the DHCP address often gets reassigned. Now if users are connecting, and that
saved VM with the stale address is called to wake up, the VM is not found.
    2. Recreating the pool after updating the golden image: This is the bigger issue. After a couple days of running smoothly, I was asked by my pilot users to add Firefox. I installed it and recreated all the VMs in the pool. When this happened, they all got
new IPs, but the old DNS records were not updated. This made the broker unable to find a single VM in the pool. I could not ping a single one.
Has anybody else run into these DNS issues with a VDI deployment? If so, what did you do to resolve it? If not, have any ideas on what is going on here?
    Thank you in advance!
    Eric

    Hi Eric,
As per my research, I can say that the default behavior. When we will recreate the VM it will change the IP address dynamically. But from your description it seems the DNS record is not getting update and due to that you can’t find your VM with hostname or
IP. But for this you can set one option under DNS server with which DNS record can update the new IP address. The option you need to set is “Dynamic updates>Nonsecure and Secure” under general properties in sites. You can check below snap.
    Hope it helps!
    Thanks.

  • Is it a DNS issue?

    Hi guys!
Im experiencing some problems with opening some pages (facebook or youtube) with any broser on my iMac and the pages that i had the chance to open make me wait too long. I was living in Turkey and never had this issue. Today i moved to Bulgaria and the problen came up here. Is a DNS issue or smthng else? What i have to do?

Can you view other websites besides those two?
Do other devices you own have the same issues (that are connected on the same network)?
You may have to contact your Internet Service Provider to resolve this.

  • RV180W intermitent DNS issues

    Hello,
I have a simple setup with a RV180W router (5 users, no domain, no AD, 1 VPN site-to-site).
Everything was working fine during about 1 year. Suddently, last week, internet browsing is slow or giving 404 error on computers.
You can try to load google (or any page) it give 404 error, you try it again it takes 3 minutes to load, you try it 5 sec after, it works.
I'm connected with Remote Desktop externally when doing my tests, the connexion is NOT dropping (while I experience 404 error) which makes me think of a DNS issue.
The router setup hasn't changed before the problem happens (no new computers, no firmware upgrade).
I was on 1.0.1.9 firmware so I tried to update it to the latest 1.0.3.10. That didn't resolve the issue and now i'm having the "100% CPU bug" that is stated in numerous other post. (which I don't care for now)
If I reboot the router, everything works fine for a couple of hours before failing again.
The syslog is showing 0 error, 0 warning, 0 all.
Should I replace the unit ?
    Thanks,
    Benoit

    Hi Marty,
Right now, everything is working fine so I can't make some test you're asking.
As soon as the problem comes back i'll answer both of these question :
When the issue occurs, can you ping google.com?
Can you ping the WAN IP of the router from the outside when this happens?
Who is the ISP?  : Cogego (Canada). I've called them and they told me that there's no problem on their side (classic)
What type of connection is it? DHCP
Did the ISP provide a modem/router or just a modem?  It's just a modem and it has been replaced on monday.
Has anyone tested with a PC connected directly to the modem?  No, but I could make the test.
I've done a tracert on google.com last time the issue occurs and it was resolving the name but the response was very slow.
I've also been able to connect to speedtest.net to make a speed test, the page was loading correctly but the speed test couldn't complete giving a timeout error each time.
As soon as the issues comes back, I'll provide more answers.
    Thanks,

  • DNS is working but unresolved DNS issue remains

Perhaps someone can help me with a DNS issue.
I have DNS working fine on a my Mac server.
I take responsibility for the domain (example.com) and establish the primary zone with the nameserver as server.example.com.
I also setup a A record for the phrase www.example.com to point to the externally hosted website.
That all works fine inside the network.
sudo changeip -checkhostname resolves just fine.
The problem is that I need to establish a reference for a test website : www.example.com/wp-admin so that it works inside the network.
That URL has a different IP address than the www record.
    A) I'm not sure how to add the part of the URL past example.com
    B) I cannot add a / as part of the machine name - the server software forbids it.
Can anyone clue me into how to do this?

DNS is not the tool you need here.
DNS translates host names and (for some protocols) IP ports, but doesn't translate file paths.
In the classic URL scheme (and simplifying things), the DNS translation deals with getting an IP host address for the string that's between the first double // and the subsequent / in the URL, and nothing else.
To differentiate further, you can either use a virtual host (what Apple calls a "Site" in Server Admin) on the target server, or can configure the web server (usually via a rewrite rule) to redirect the incoming HTTP request to the path you want.
Depending on exactly what you're up to here, sometimes a reverse web proxy can be used. A reverse web proxy is where you're forwarding an incoming HTTP request from one server along to another web server, either on the same or another IP host.
[Here|http://labs.hoffmanlabs.com/node/1329] is a write-up on virtual hosts on Mac OS X Server.

  • Possible DNS issue with AirPort Express basestation?

    Hi all -
Up until recently my Airport Express has been working great. This past weekend I started noticing that website browsing became slow, and some websites would not come up at all (e.g. popular sites like wordpress.org).
Otherwise my internet connection works fine (email works, browsing for the most part is normal for all computers on the network, pc and mac).
I read that this could be a possible DNS issue. I unplugged the AE basestation and plugged my Powerbook directly into my cable modem and was able to get to all websites that I couldn't get to while using the AE. That, and browsing was a heck of a lot faster (it seemed).
Can anyone help me out and point me to a specific setting on the AE that I can toggle, correct, whatever, to solve this (possible) DNS issue?
    Thanks!
    Jeff

Dear Henry, Thanks for your reply, and we are sorry for having intruded upon the wrong thread with our troubles. Perhaps you could point us to the most pertinent thread. Further pushing credulity Might you assist us further?... We have checked every floor in the building and no new equip has been added, though I can't speculate on the 'hood at large. We added a Time Capsule to the mix hoping that might bring back some stability and speed, but results aren't very promising so far. perhaps you might point us to a resource for professional help, or web sites that may help us define and implement something beyond the ad hoc system we have currently. We have read through the Apple docs regarding Designing Networks, and though informative they don't necessarily explain the nuances / consequences of different configurations, for instance, that WDS will adversely affect net speed. Thanks in advance for your input (should you wish to assist). If you are so inclined I can provide the snap shot of our list of hardware. And again apologies if we are in the wrong place.
