Websites loaded only with question marks.

Some websites are loaded only with question marks after I updated to Firefox 4.0.1. I have attached a screenshot in the link below.
[http://img64.imageshack.us/img64/2462/wmarks.png http://img64.imageshack.us/img64/2462/wmarks.png]

Update Skype to the latest version. The one you have installed at the moment is incompatible with Firefox. See https://www.mozilla.com/en-US/blocklist/
In addition, go to Add-ons | Extensions and disable "BitDefender Antiphishing Toolbar". Test your sites where you get the question marks to see if it rectifies the problem. If it doesn't, you can re-enable it again.
Do the same with the Conduit Engine.
Install Java 1.6.0_25 via http://www.java.com/en/ and then remove all previous versions. Older versions are a security risk. Uninstall via Add/Remove Programs.
Install VLC 1.1.9 via http://www.videolan.org
The version you have on your system exposes your machine to attack. Actually, version 1.1.9 is also insecure, but not as bad as the one you have installed. See [http://www.h-online.com/open/news/item/VLC-Media-Player-1-1-9-closes-security-holes-1226673.html VLC Media Player 1.1.9 closes security holes] ''and'' [http://www.h-online.com/open/news/item/A-new-security-flaw-hits-VLC-1225820.html A new security flaw hits VLC]
You'll just have to keep an eye on the videolan.org site for when they release a new patch.
If the problem persists, try running Firefox in [[Safe Mode]]. If it functions properly in that configuration, then one of your add-ons is the culprit.

  • Imac froze and on re load folder with question mark appeared.  Now will not start up to home screen.

The other night my Imac froze during updates.  I found it in the morning with the screen and mouse frozen and only the loading icon spinning.  I re stared the computer from the power button.
Upon re loading the apple logo did not appear and was replaced by a folder with a question mark in the middle.  I looked this up online and found the best option was to use disk utility to check and repair the hard drive.  This showed an error with HFS.  Used disk utility to fix the hard drive so thast no error appear.  I re stared the computer but all it loaded was the folder with the question mark again, so I decided to erase the hard drive of any information (I back up quite regulary, but left it as last resort due to inconvenience), when installing again it seems to go so far before telling me it cannot install and I need to re start.  I have erased the dsk again and completed disk clean too before trying again and getting the same results.
I am currenlty stuck at this point and need help, which would be appreciated.
My Imac is an early 2008 Aluminimum model and installtion disk is 10.3

The folder with ? mark mean one of 2 things.
    1) The OS is so corrupted that the hardware can't find it as a valid way to boot the system.
    2) Your hard drive has failed.
You can try booting from the Recovery HD partition, Commadn + r keys at startup if you are running Lion Mt Lion or Mavericks.
Or boot the system from the original System reinstall DVD that came with your Mac or an upgrade OS X install DVd you may have purchased.
With either use Disk Utility to see if the hard drive is seen and if it can be erased or repartitioned and then restore from a Time Macine baclup or reinstall OS X.

  • Facebook images, profile photos, cover photos are not loading. Only small blue square with question mark. Same thing in Safari, FireFox, Chrome.

Since July on MacBook Pro facebook images, profile photos, cover photos are not loading. Only small blue square with question mark. Same thing in Safari, FireFox, Chrome. Everything is up to date including last version of Adobe Flash. And watching YouTube also a problem. Video is skipping, freezing for few seconds and jumps forward. At the same time on Toshiba with Windows Vista under the same account, same wi-fi connection everything works fine.
Please help with sugesstions to fix the issue.

Seems like problem is solved but it might be temporarily. Anyway. Click on the image, it will open facebook photo browser. Image is not loading so right click on the blue box with question mark, save image as. It will start downloading but without any success since browser do not see the image. After this attempt refresh the page and close all tabs with facebook. Try to open facebook once again. For some reason after this weird actions all images displayed properly. Do not know for how long but now it works.

  • Why am I getting a blue box with question mark instead of logo image?  It happens in my signature (in gmail) and in mailchimp (again, only with the logo).

Why am I getting a blue box with question mark instead of logo image?  It happens in my signature (in gmail) and in mailchimp (again, only with the logo).

The question mark in the box, if it looks like this:   means that safari cannot find the linked image.  On windows machines, this would be the equivilant of  the small "page-with-a-red-X" logo that appears in the same scenario.  Check the reference to the image and make sure that the image is in the correct location, and is accessable by the reference.

  • Flashing folder with question mark only on sartup.

Flashing folder with question mark only on sartup. Won't recognise ANY startup key commands (tried different keyboards) and won't recognise OSX startup disk. Any ideas??

The first thing I'd do is look at the silver side of the SL installation disc and check for finger prints or scratches and gently clean the disc with a lint free cloth. Also, instead of formatting the hard drive it would be worth deleting the partition(s) and repartitioning.

  • Safari Image turns to Tiny Blue Box with Question Mark

    Hi all,
I get tiny blue question mark a lot in Safari.
Many Website where i visit almost everyday, the images appear as "tiny blue box with question marks". My Firefox also fails to load the images and had the same problem with "tiny blue box with question marks". Before every site work fine. I have been searching through Google and many others search for almost 12 hrs for a solution to solve this problem but none of it really works out. Basically, I have tried everything, I just can't find and still not able to fix this issue in Safari and Firefox.
Is this a Safari 3.0.4/Firefox 2.0.0.9 problem, or is there some setting on my Mac wrong or is it a new virus recently?
If anyone has any solution to solve this problem, an very much appreciated...
    CK Lee (From Thailand)

Hi guys, I am also in Bangkok and working (I use the term loosely) with True. Like you, the images have not been loading over the weekend and I have been trying to track this down. I went through all the motions of restarting, clearing caches, etc., but that was no good.
On Saturday morning, I went into my office where I have access to another network (I don't usually use it as it is a bit flaky), but when I tried that, the images did load.
Back at home, I tried again and the blue squares reappeared. I checked some of my own web pages which also had the squares, but only selectively (images in the same directory were OK; those that were accessed via internal links were not). Using FTP I checked the website: images were all OK as were the links on the pages themselves.
As an experiment, I uploaded one image. When I tried the page again, the image appeared. I then uploaded both of the affected directories and the pages were back to normal after a couple of reloads. What this indicates to me is that the cache, either at True or upstream, has a problem.
I do think however that it is True as the other server I used would also access the CAT caches and they seemed OK.
A series of notes to the True helpdesk might jolt them into some action on Monday morning after they have had their starter coffee. I have had some success in the past with [email protected]
    All the best.

  • MacBook Pro flashes file folder with question mark and startup manager will not run

My son's MacBook Pro won't boot (gets the flashing file folder with question mark).  When I try to open startup manager (holding "option" key during boot does not do it).  Other posts suggest inserting the install disk, but I am pretty sure that for Lion, there was no disk, it was just off the website through the App Store.  Any further suggestions?

Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Have started seeing diamonds with question marks on FireFox (and Chrome); changed encoding, made no difference.

Both FireFox and Google Chrome (but not Internet Explorer) have been showing black diamonds with question marks in them for some time. It's not an encoding issue, as changing character encoding doesn't work. I don't know what caused it, as it all of a sudden started out of the blue. My network.http. in about:config are all default. I've tried scanning for malware, including in safe mode with the internet disconnected. Nothing has made a difference. Please help me, as this problem is incredibly hard to Google and I have no idea what to do.

My notebook will not start up----I see only a question mark in a small folder.  What to do?

Booting From An OS X Installer Disc
    1. Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
      2. Restart the computer.
      3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
      4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple
          logo appears.
      5. Wait for installer to finish loading.
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Help:  Got the dreaded grey folder with question mark

    Hey folks,
I was working in Chrome on my 13" mid-2010 MacBook Pro running OSX10.6.8, plugged in the mains charger and instantly had an unusual (not the beachball- the daisy from start-up and shut-down) freeze-up of the computer.  I couldn't force quit and so shut the computer down using the power button (something I have done perhaps four times in its life-time).
On start up I got the dreaded flashing grey folder with question mark and know that this is serious.  Last week I had a half hour with the U, I and O keys not working and that despite being very, very nice to my machines and repairing permissions and not unduly installing rubbish.
So I have inserted the start up disk for the MacBook Pro to see if I could use Disk Utility.  And got it started (unusually load "whirring" too but I attribute this to heat) and Disk Utility cannot find the disk to repair permissions.
Now-  from what I understand it means the hard drive is gone, right?  Anything that can be done to save it (I cannot afford a new one)?
If not-  how do I get the bits of data on there which I had yet to back up?  CAN I?
    Please and thank you.

So I fitted a new 500GB solid state drive from Samsung (easy enough- only a few screws on the lid, four screws holding it down and four more for the "pins" to hold it in place) but now, when I start up (bearing in mind that the install disk is stuck inside)- I get the Apple logo, then the daisy clock and then, woe is me, the "no entry" sign and eventually the install disk kicks in only to reveal that there is no hard drive to install to.  Disk Utility and Start Up Disk both do not recognise it.
Any ideas what I can do, given that it is not rocket science to install one of these, given there is just one cable to connect and the rest is just to keep it in place?

  • Every once in a while when I open my mail or a page I get nothing but strange lines of symbols.  Many of the symbols are black triangles with question marks in the center.  I completely reset it like new, but problem still exists

Every once in a while when I open my mail or open a page I get lines of strange symbols like black triangles with question marks in the center.  I have reset the ipad2 to new condition but the problem still exists.

A reset does not make tthe iPad "like new."
First, let's ensure that we agree on just what is a Reset...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.

  • Hard drive crash? Folder with question mark

Hi everyone! I had problems with my macbook pro (early 2013). Last week, it slowed down suddenly and the laptop heats up during sleep. Then the hard drive recently crashed, at least I thought it crashed after it showed the folder with question mark during startup and did not show my old hard disk drive. Now I bought a 1TB WD mainstream hard drive disk, unfortunately it does not detect it in the internet recovery (disk utility). Now my question is, Do I have to do something with the hard drive first for my laptop to detect it? Like formatting it? The box said that it is compatible with mac OSx Lion, but my internet recovery lets me install Mountain Lion only. Is that the problem? or is the problem internal like the cable that connects the hard drive to the logic board?

That depends on the type of drive you have. If it is a standard external drive (in an enclosure) you can connect the drive with a USB cable.
If it is a bare drive like this:
You will have to put it an enclosure and get a usb cable. External drive enclosure are < $10. They come in two sizes, 2.5" and 3.5". Buy one that's correct for your drive. http://www.amazon.ca/MOGOI-Enclosure-External--Silver-Accessory/dp/B00HC107R6/re f=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1404755872&sr=8-5&keywords=disk+enclosure

  • HELP! Getting Blue Q with question marks when visiting web sites

I see from the replies to similar posts that is is recommended to use the default settings under Advanced/ mime settings, in Quick time
I always had all boxes checked in all the categories as my preference would be to have Quick time play every thing. And encountered no problems .
I recently purchased flip4mac studio and now every thing is all messed up, web pages that used to work fine as far as saving content to my desk top or downloads folder, or copying and pasting urls, for sharing now work no more, I get the blue Q with the question mark as shown in these web sites I am completely hobbled as far as sharing my videos.
[Post Edited by Hosts due to adult content]
What are the correct settings for quicktime preferences ?
and please explain kiosk mode , I do have Macromedia flash player installed, and I guess Adobe, when I visit different sites with video, and I control click on the player I am able to tell which player is playing the media, only quicktime offers the save to my computer option, this is how I wound up with flip 4 mac, it was recommended to play content , I also just upgraded my safari to the beta version
iMac G5/G4 12 inch Power book   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

"What are the correct settings for quicktime preferences ?"
Make sure you have the latest versions of Adobe Flash Player Software
QuickTime Preferences > Advanced > MIME Stettings > Miscellaneous.
    Deactivate the "Flash Media" option.
This tells the browser not to to display Flash Media and lets the newly installed Adobe software work its magic.

If the above thread doesn't help, try this...
    Thanks to QuickTimeKirk........
    Quit QuickTime.
Open User (Home)/Library/Preferences and delete any .plist file with QuickTime in its name. Don't worry as a new one will be created.
Open System Preferences/QuickTime and see if the window and tabs work as they should.

Since you are using Safari then I suggest that you check out Safari 2.0 Help Webpages aren't working (indicated by boxes with question marks)

  • Iphone 3g S viewing email pics are showing as blue boxes with question mark

I am trying to view an e-mail on my iphone 3g S and the pics are not displaying. Instead little blue boxes with question marks are showing. Any ideas on why this is happening?

The pictures couldn't be loaded due to one or more reasons. Some common reasons are: your email server timed out, the photo was taking too long to load, you had poor signal strength, the file was corrupted, the download failed, or the photo couldn't be displayed because the file type wasn't supported.

Suddenly I see the usual blue box with question mark inside mail messages instead of pix.
    That did not happen before.
It happened only on certain pages with Safari, like the google news feed which did not display pix.
However, this new mail problem is really disturbing.
I checked Little Snitch and port 80 is open.
    I checked java pref.
    I am at a loss.
    PLEASE HELP!

Suddenly I see the usual blue box with question mark inside mail messages instead of pix.
That indicates that your Mail preferences are setup to not display remote images in email messages. You should check Mail->Preferences->Viewing and make surre the box to 'Display remote images in HTML messages' is checked.
    I checked java pref.
Java has nothing to do with Mail, or displaying images in it or any browser.
