Websockets TCP RST through ASA+IPS and ACE
Hello,
We recently deployed a new websockets project within our existing web infrastructure. The websockets traffic (as all the rest of normal web traffic) is crossing an ASA + IPS module where I do NAT and and then is forwarded to an ACE load balancer where two real server are configured in the server farm in active/standby mode (not load balancing) due the websockets nature. Everything seems to work fine but sometimes (once every 4 days or so) and based upon the server logs a TCP Reset gets the application server and bring down the whole application.
It's clear that this application as a bug but I would like to avoid that TCP reset as a workaround while application team fix the ibug as the go-live is soon. Anybody faced this issue and can help me to find where that supposed TCP reset comes from? I didn't get IPS alerts.
Server log:
"Unable to read data from the transport connection: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host. at System.Net.Sockets.NetworkStream.EndRead(IAsyncResult asyncResult)"
Thanks,
Miquel
Hi Miquel,
A packet capture on the server shall show the origin of TCP RST. If you are natting the source traffic then take front end pcaps at front end of firewall as well as at backend and similarly for ACE, to see what is the origin of TCP RST. Normally, it should be from client if it is received on the server. LB's just forward the traffic to the server but it depends and it could be loadbalancer resetting the connection. But we don't have any details to be sure. So packet captures would be our best friend here.

Kanwal

Need help with LAN Architecture - ASA/IPS, and ISR placement
Dear friends, I am new to Cisco community, had no previous experience with managed networks and desperately need an advice setting up a LAN for my small business. Here is what I did so far:
ASA w IPS is facing internet, has a webserver connected to DMZ and then ISR on the inside interface. ISR is used for running CCME/CUE VOIP and VLAN NAT. Switch is connected to the ISR with a trunk interface. I setup multiple VLANs with ACL to separate engineering/management/sales/fileserver. Inter VLAN routing is enabled on the switch to allow Gigabit routing from the Fileserver VLAN to the Engineering VLAN.
I know this is probably overkill for a 4 people company, but my objective is to be ready for possible attacks form both outside and inside and to ensure business continuity and minimal service interruptions.
My question, would it be more practical to connect ASA directly to the switch and do VLAN NAT on the ASA instead of the router? This way if router fails, I loose VOIP but not Internet and if ASA fails, I only loose internet, while phones will stay operational. This approach should also let me use ASA IPS to monitor inter VLAN traffic, so if 1 of the user PCs gets infected, hopefully IPS will contain the damage to a single VLAN.
What would experienced network architect do in my case? Any suggestions?
Please, forgive me if I misunderstood something or did something silly, as this is my first network setup (not including household grade routers)
Thank you very much in advance!Thank you for your response!
I still keep debating if it has any advantages to use a Router in between ASA and the switch, or should I connect switch directly to
ASA, so the only function of the router is to run VOIP?
I saw multiple network diagrams which all had a border router, then ASA then switches. In my case router runs VOIP and I would want it to be behind ASA. Any benefits of running internet traffic through both ASA and a router?
For redundancy, we can’t really afford 2nd ASA at this time, for now I would want to make sure there is as little chance as possible that both phones and internet go out simultaneously. -
IPS Appliances/ASA IPS and AAA
Aloha -
Does anyone know if they support AAA for administrative authentication? If not, maybe in the future? Thanks!!!The IPS sensor software does not support any AAA features. Usernames and passwords must be defined on each box. This has been a security weakness of the platform for years and as far as we've heard is not on Cisco's roadmap.
My IPS boxes fail every security audit and the firewall guys make fun of me. -
DC and ADC Synchronization through ASA 5580
Hi , I have a Windows 2008 server acing as DC connected to one of the interface of ASA 5580, and have couple of ADC in the branches which are connected to different interfaces of ASA. The routing is happening through the ASA. When trying to do DCPROMO on the ADC it’s giving an error. Natting is not there in the ASA and I have access-list configured for “Permit IP Any any ” for all interface. Any clue wht could be the problem ?
1) Please check the syslog to see if it's being blocked by the firewall.
2) Run packet capture on both interfaces with ACL just between the DC and ADC:
access-list cap-test permit ip host host
access-list cap-test permit ip host host
capture cap-DC access-list cap-test interface
capture cap-ADC access-list cap-test interface
Try the "DCPROMO", and check the packet capture to see where it is breaking. -
My macbook pro with OS 10.6.7 'mail' program does not send my mail through the IPS wireless, I am connected to. The message is my 'e-mail is rejected by the server'. It has been working until 5 days ago. The connection doctor says I am connected and no log in required.
After trying lots I found now in 'Airport Utility is 'unable to detect any airport wireless devises.....'
There is no provider to be seen in airport utility and only 'rescan' is an option with no results...
even so I am connected and can browse the net receive mail etc. and the outgoing 'mail server' is set to the internet provider I am connected to.
Can you enlighten me what can I do I need to use my e-mail program urgently !!!
Thanks for your helpI'm not sure what "IPS wireless" is, but unless you have an Apple Wi-Fi base station (such as a Time Capsule, AirPort Extreme, or AirPort Express), AirPort Utility won't see anything.
You might try defining a new SMTP server to see if that will work any better.
By the way, the subject field for these messages isn't intended to hold a lot of text. Put a short description of your problem in the subject field and save the rest of your message for the body field. -
IPS and IDS- ARP Inbalance-of-Requests and TCP High Port Sweep
Does anybody knows about ARP Inbalance-of-Requests and TCP High Port Sweep IPS signature? We've been receiving numerous numbers of alerts with this kind of signature in the IPS.
Actually, I'm planning to tune these events in IPS and I really need your inputs if it is safe to tune. Based on my investigation, most of the source and destination IP's are internal to our network (e.g servers, workstation and other device).
I think this is false positive incidents...
Best regards,
CarlouThis will be a normal signature to see triggered if you are watching outbound traffic from your internal network. As long as the source of the traffic is your internal hosts, and the destination is external hosts, this is likely just normal behavior.
This signature triggers when a single host sends TCP SYN packets to a number of different hosts, perhaps because of multiple web sessions going, or pop-up windows while web surfing.

ACE-TCP RST, ACE initiated RST
Hello members,
What is the command to identify if ACE is initiating TCP RST?
Is there a way to overcome or change timers/window/ect, if ACE do initiate TCP RST?
Thanks in advance members.Thanks Giles.
Very useful command

I'll look at the capture file that was done couple of days ago.
I'm attaching the show output, just collected. Any clues will be appriciated.

How to Support IDS in ASA 5505 and 5520?
Dear All;
we have the following HW configuration for the ASA 5505 and ASA 5520, We need to add the Intrusion Detection System (IDS) functionality to both ASA. My question is: what is/are the module(s) required to support this function, and what is the deference between IPS and IDS, does the the same Module do the both functionality?

Rashed Ward.Ok, I was not quite correct in my first post.
Those modules - only modules available for corresponding ASA models.
They all may act as IPS (inline mode) or IDS (promiscuous mode), depending on how you configure your policies.
When it acts like IPS, ASA directs all traffic through the module, so all the traffic is inspected and can be dropped inline if some signature fires.
When it acts as an IDS, ASA just copies traffic to the module for inspection, but actual traffic flow is not affected by the module, as it's not inline in this case.
Plus, those modules may be comdination of both modes. I.e. some traffic might be inspected inline, when some other (more sensitive) traffic can be inspected in promiscuous mode.
To understand this better, get familiar with this link:

Site to Site VPN between ASA 5505 and Cisco 800 router
Evening all,
Hoping that someboy can see the error of my ways. It seems very like the problem that i read here: https://supportforums.cisco.com/thread/2016300
We have a cisco 800 in a remote site which we wanted to use for a site to site vpn. Went through the steps on the ASA 5505 and the 800 and have got to the stage were the tunnel is up and connected. Getting traffic through it is another matter. Remote network is 172.20.224.0/20 and the server network behind the ASA is 192.168.168.0/24. The tunnel does intiate when you send traffic from 172 ......to 192....... Both the ASA and 800 report the tunnel is up. If i look at the stats using ccp on the 800 i can see the encapsulation packets graph shooting up but nothing cominbg back. I did packet captures on the 5505 and could not see anything coming from the tunnel so i dont belive its making it to the ASA. Here is the config from the 800:

Slow TCP performance for traffic routed by ACE module
Hi,
the customer uses two ACE20 modules in active-standby mode. The ACE load-balances servers correctly. But there is a problem with communication between servers in the different ACE contexts. When the customer uses FTP from one server in one context to the other server in other context the throughput through ACE is about 23 Mbps. It is routed traffic in ACE:-( See:

There is parameter map configured with rebalance persistant for cookie insertion in the context.
Do you know how can I increase performance for TCP traffic which is not load-balanced, but routed by ACE? Thank you very much.
RomanDefault inactivity timeouts used by ACE are
icmp 2sec
tcp 3600sec
udp 120sec
With your config you will change inactivity for every protocol to 7500sec.If you want to change TCP timeout to 7500sec and keep the
other inactivity timeouts as they are now use following
parameter-map type connection GLOBAL-TCP
set timeout inactivity 600
parameter-map type connection GLOBAL-UDP
set timeout inactivity 120
parameter-map type connection GLOBAL-ICMP
set timeout inactivity 2
class-map match-all ALL-TCP
match port tcp any
class-map match-all ALL-UDP
match port tcp any
class-map match-all ALL-ICMP
match port tcp any
policy-map multi-match TIMEOUTS
class ALL-TCP
connection advanced GLOBAL-TCP
class ALL-UDP
connection advanced GLOBAL-UDP
class ALL-TCP
connection advanced GLOBAL-ICMP
and apply service-policy TIMEOUTS globally

GRE tunnel through asa no pptp, l2tp, ipsec
Hello!
can't understand how to configure GRE tunnel through ASA
i have one router with public ip, connected to internet
ASA 8.4 with public ip connected to internet
router with private ip behind ASA.
have only one public ip on ASA with /30 mask
have no crypto
have network behind ASA and PAT for internet users.
can't nat GRE? cause only TCP/UDP nated(?)
with packet-tracer i see flow already created but tunnel doesn't workA "clean" way would be to use a protocol that can be PATted. That could be GRE over IPSec. With that you have the additional benefit that your communication is protected through the internet.
Don't stop after you've improved your network! Improve the world by lending money to the working poor:

OWA not accessible after setting up vpn through ASA 5505
I have a client that is running Win2003 Server R2 with Exchange Server 2003. OWA was setup and clients could connect to their exchange mailbox from the internet with no problems.
We recently configured vpn on the ASA 5505 and now no-one can connect to OWA since that time.
Here is what I have for a configuration.
Any thoughts?I thought OWA uses tcp port 80 by default, or 443 if you use https. Ignore the rest if this fact is wrong. Otherwise ...
In your config there is nothing to allow the www traffic in the access-list outside_access_in
access-list outside_access_in extended permit tcp any interface outside eq 80
and no static nat for this
static (inside,outside) tcp interface 80 192.168.0.254 80 netmask 255.255.255.255
I think these must have got deleted when you made the other changes ? Hope this helps. -
Im in the middle of configuring Ip Phone SSL VPN through ASA, got stuck on authentication.. When I enter username and password on the phone screen, i get "Username and password failed" message on the screen. However, in ASA logs I see the following line
Feb 16 2011 15:12:57 725002 85.132.43.67 52684 Device completed SSL handshake with client vpn:85.132.*.*/52684
Feb 16 2011 15:17:26 725007 85.132.43.67 52745 SSL session with client vpn:85.132.*.*/52745 terminated.
What does it mean? How can I turn on debugging to see what is going on?
Thank you in advance!Hi,
If you're not using certificates in client authentication then the SSL handshake will complete before the user is requested to authenticate with username/password. If this authentication request fails you will see the SSL session terminated immediately following this failure (as in the logs you provided). Notice the 5 seconds between the SSL session establishment and termination, this is most likely when the user is being authenticated against the aaa server. If the phone is failing authentication against an external aaa-server you'll want to investigate the logs on that server to determine the root cause of the failure. The ASA can also provide confirmation of the authentication request/reject with the command 'show aaa-server'. If you want to see what's going on at an authentication protocol level you can enable several debugs including "debug aaa authentication|common|internal' and protocol specific debugs such as 'debug radius user|session|all' or 'debug ldap'.

Upload through inline IPS increases inspection load
The IPS-4240-K9 [IPS Version 7.0(4) E4] is deployed in inline mode before the ASA and perimeter router .The design is LAN->IPS->ASA->Internet Router. The problem is that when i am uploading on the internet the IPS inspection load increased to 100% and the devices beyond the IPS become non-responsive(ping drops from ASA and router).Surprisingly the ping response on IPS does not break, when I put the IPS in never inspect mode (by pass on) the problem does not happen.Hence its confirm that the issue is with the IPS and its inspection load due to upload.
Please guide on how to resolve it . thanksHi Sawan,
No there is no particular signature firing a lot..normal signatures which do fire in normal operation..
By traffic load u mean the size of file being uploaded ,even if we upload a file between 20-40 MB the ping drops on the devices beyond IPS starts and continues until the file is uploaded..once the file is uploaded completely which in the case of 20-40 MB is in within seconds the situation returns to normal...
We will upgrade soon ...but is there any bug in this release related to this problem ??
Thanks for the reply ..
Rgds

Slow SFTP throughput when passed through ASA 55xx
I have an interesting scenario. I have setup two test boxes for SFTP. One in a DMZ behind an ASA inteface, and the other on our external switch. If I send a file to the one on the external switch, I get 40 Mbps on a transfer from a remote location. When I try the same transfer but using a machine in the same DMZ, I get 100 Mbps while connected to a FastEthernet switchport. When I try the same transfer from the remote location previously mentioned, to the same server even, but using SFTP, my throughput goes down to 670 KB/s. I get that same low speed even on the machine on the external switch to the DMZ. It should be much faster since there is no latency involved. It just goes to the switch to the ASA interface to the SFTP server. I even tried this across two different ASA, same result. One was a 5505, the other a 5520.
So, it seems the only limiting factor here is the ASA. Does anyone have any observations or suggestions that might help?
Thanks!Sorry, I should have been more clear. The throughput is only reduced when the ASA is in the picture and SFTP is used. I can FTP to the same server, same application, just different protocol, and get full throughput. As soon as I select SFTP instead of FTP, the throughput drops dramatically.
I know it is not the over head on the server, because I tested an SFTP transfer from a client machine on the same LAN, and got full throughput. It is only when going through the ASA that the SFTP throughput drops by a factor of 7
