Webstart File - Preferences hangs on XP Pro.
My Web Start console, Help->About returns "Version 1.4.2_02 (build b03)". When I click File->Preferences from the Web Start console, the console hangs and I have to kill it from the M$Windows task manager. I'm running on XP Pro SP1.
Is there a way to get a java conole for the Web Start application to see what is going on? Running from a command window shows no output. Is there a bugid associated with my problem?
I have not even downloaded any webstart applications yet. The only listed apps are "ProgressBarDemo" and "ProgressBarDemo2".
Thanks much.
My "Checking for latest version" problem also exists with 1.5 beta 1. It was a network/DNS timeout issue of some sort. The Properties dialog works, if you can find it. (The promised start menu and desktop icons were not installed, I had to dig into the JRE directory to get to the 1.5 Webstart console.)
I had my IE browser set to "Use Automatic Configuration Script" AND a manual proxy server with several excluded host names, including the one causing the problem. Webstart was set to "Use Browser Settings". This must have somehow confused webstart.
Changing either webstart or browser to use either the "Automatic Configuration Script" OR "Manual proxy server" (not both) made my "Checking for latest version" problem go away. The properties dialog for 1.4.2_04 webstart console is still broken, though 1.5 seems to take precedence when handling the jnlp parsing.

Window 7 64-bit Quick Time Pro - no file preference in set up
Just downloaded QickTime for Win 7. The program does not specifiy if it is 64 or 32 bit. When I went to the control panel to look at the preference for the files I want QT to manager, the tab for file preference was not there.
If I run a video, Windows media player takes over and there is no way to turn it off.
Help!Look for the "File Types" button on the Browser tab in the QuickTime preferences.

System Preferences hangs at "Loading Print & Fax..."
Hi,
I tried to load a Canon printer driver for the ir1023. After the install it required a restart. The Mac Pro never fully turned off, so I was stuck having to do a manual shut down with the power button. I am sure this messed everything up.
When I logged back on System Preferences hangs at "Loading Print & Fax..." when I click the icon. So I deleted the printing preferences, from my preferences folder and still nothing.
I ran the canon installer and that ran successfully, but did not remedy the problem. No Mac programs will print, Photoshop will not launch and Text Edit won't quit.
I ran Disk permissions from the Leopard disk, still no improvement.
Any ideas on how to fix my printing woes without a reinstall?
And I was having some hardware issues with my Time Machine drive - so I had no backup to fall back on.
Thanks!I would run the UFR2 driver installer again, but when it shows Easy Install at the Installation Type pane, change the menu to Uninstall. This should remove all the UFR2 files, most of which are copied to ./Library/Printers/Canon/UFR2.
With the Canon files removed, try to open the Print & Fax pane again. If it still fails to load, you could try opening the CUPS web page (http://127.0.0.1:631). From here you can select the printer list and job list and possibly remove any existing printers or jobs that are in the system. Ideally we would like to reset the printing system, but I don't think we can do this from the web page or from Terminal - we need the GUI of Print & Fax.
Will do some more reading and get back to you....

Increase in file size worse in XI Pro when signing.
Hello there,
We started using AcrobatPro X for making, securing and signing PDF files of our test reports. The validity of these reports is not limited in time.
So we include this revocation information at time of signing. We use our Belgian eID-cards and place 2 signatures.
Recently I've noticed that when I use XI Pro (Win7, 64-bit) to sign the PDF (it does not matter is the file is made in X Pro or XI Pro) the size increased to 10MB.
When I sign the same file with X Pro (Vista, 32-bit) the file size only increases to 2MB ! (Here the revocation info was also included.)
(I am still looking into whether we need the LTV (or if OCSP can be used), so I did a test on XI Pro where I did not include revocation information, with the result: 4MB.)
The 10Mb file size is a problem for us as our test reports must be able to be send by e-mail.
How can the increase in file size (when signing with including the revocation information) between X and XI be explained?
How can this issue be resolved?I have several questions:
1. What is the size of the original (before the first signature) file?
2. Do you sign with Acrobat X and Acrobat XI at the same time (you may get different CRLs with different lengths at different times)?
3. What is the PDF size after the first signature using Acrobat X?
4. What is the PDF size after the first signature using Acrobat XI?
5 and 6: the same as 3 and 4 but after the second signature?
It does not make sense to me that with Acrobat X you get 2 signatures with LTV and the total PDF size is just 2MB and with Acrobat XI you get 2 signatures without LTV and the total PDF size is 4MB. This doesn't make sense. Are you sure you're signing the same PDFs with the same credentials at about the same time in both cases? Or did you mean that PDF size increases by 2MB in the Acrobat X case and by 4MB/10MB in Acrobat XI case? I'd prefer to have the total PDF sizes not the increases.
Another test you can do is this. Turn off "include revocation information at time of signing" on Acrobat preferences, sign your sample PDF with the same 2 signatures, then right-click on each signature and select "Add Verification Information" command for each signature (this is a new way to add LTV available in Acrobat/Reader 9.1 and later). Then save this PDF and check (and report back to this forum) the PDF size. You cannot use this LTV method if you expect that some users will open this PDF with Acrobat/Reader versions prior to 9.1. Those versions will not use this LTV type. -
HT1338 My system preference hang after i click desktop and screen saver app.
When ever i try to change my wall paper or click on my desktop and screen saver app the system preference hang..
Any one know how to fix that beside format the whole system?
Thanks in Adv.Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Try to delete the Desktop settings file. First, open Finder, select Go menu > Go to Folder, and type ~/Library/Preferences. Then, delete "com.apple.desktop.plist" and "com.apple.systempreferences.plist", and restart. Finally, you should be able to go to Desktop and Screen Saver on System Preferences -
I upgraded my First Gen Macbook to Snow Leopard when it came out. Just recently however, I have started having a problem with system preferences. The first time I open system preferences, it hangs, stalls, and crashes. Once I force quit it, I can launch it normally. So recap:
Launch System Preferences: Hang, Force Quit
Re-Launch System Preferences: Open immediately
A minor annoyance but still an annoyanceYou are not alone friend, I have a 1st gen Macbook Pro, fresh install of Snow Leopard, new user account, NO migration, all updated, and all voodoo done as well (repair permissions, chkdsk, blah blah blah). I have to launch System Preference, watch it hang, force quit, and relaunch successfully. Works that way EVERY time. If I wait too long, I can't open it. Now I open it and just leave it open all day. If I didn't change so many settings so often, I wouldn't care. This entire experience of upgrading to Snow Leopard has sucked. Shame on you Apple.

System Preferences hangs with Mountain Lion
Various parts of system preferences hang under Mountain Lion. Prior to upgrade there was no problem. Any ideas?
I am still having this problem as well. Multiple panes will fail to launch. A reinstallation of ML failed to fix this. I even did a fresh reinstall, manually copying over my Documents, Music, Pictures, and other essential files to a backup drive beforehand. Almost all System Preferences fail to launch. A list of those that fail:
Desktop & Screensaver
Security & Privacy
Notifications
iCloud
Mail, Contacts, & Calendars
Date & Time
Software Update (The only one that seems to extend beyond the preference pane. Software update will not launch, even though I know there are iPhoto and iTunes updates to be downlaoded.)
Dictation & Speech
Time Machine (I really, really, really, really, really want this one to work!)
Startup Disk
Third-party:
Glimmer Blocker (I have let the developer know. There is an update, it does not seem to be working at this time.) -

installed ML, but system preferences hangs so can't change any preferences. It opens the icon, but the window never appears.
I have re-installed - but same happens
moreover, I can't get it to restart without forcing a quit by turning on/off button (it hangs on the blank 'light grey' screen)
I have checked repair permissions, no problem there.
any ideas?
imac 2.4GHz intel core 2 duo, 3 GB sdramOn my MacPro:
My problem began with a nearly non-functioning Mail program after upgrade to OS M Lion, which is detailed in my post a few days ago. After trying everything I could to resolve it unsuccessfully, (rebuild directory structure, fix permissions, trash preferences for iCloud apps, zap PRAM, and several other efforts, including a reinstall of M Lion from recovery drive) I contacted Apple Support and ended up on the phone with a rep. We set-up remote access so he could see the Mail hang-up everytime I attempted to fill in the outgoing email address field in a new message window (spinning ball) - it took up to 30 sec for each letter I typed to appear and overall about 2-3 minutes to completely populate the field with the address. All other Mail functions were working better, but seriously sluggish. We tried disabling each email account, one by one to see if another account was causing the problem (my primary account is a .me address). No problem with other accounts. Then the unexpected happened. He asked me to open Safari and log into iCloud so we could see if Mail was working via the web. Upon login, the icons for all the iCloud applications appeared with completely corrupted text labels under each icon... each was a mix of letters and symbols stacked on top of each other. It appeared that my entire iCloud account might be corrupted. However, testing the same login via Firefox worked just fine, so the issue was narrowing to iCloud and interaction between the default apps between this computer and iCloud via Safari. We then attempted to open Contacts from Launch Pad on HD - It opened, but none of my contacts were there. Further indication of iCloud account corruption. Since I am able to access and use all iCloud features and apps on my MacBook Pro, an early assumption is that the OS upgrade to Mountain Lion on my MacPro may have been severely corrupted. Before going so far as to do a clean install of M Lion, we installed a Data Capture program and I ran through the attempts to set-up and send a new email while it captured all system activitiy in that process. This data and the screen captures obtained during this session have now been sent up to Apple OS engineers to dig into and figure out why, and how a corruption of the ML install could have occured. I have agreed not to do a 'clean install' of the OS until the engineers get back to me as they may need to run more remote diagnostics on this computer to narrow it down to the actual cause.... this, so that a fix can be implemented before countless other computers are effected. I am scheduled to hear back form them today or on Monday and I will post the results here. They seem quite busy with bug fixing right now. The toys and features of Lion and M Lion are very cool, but I am seriously beginning to miss the speed and reliability of Leapord/Snow Leopard.... even Tiger - I fired up my old G5 tower with Leopard ... it is amazing just how fast and solid it is compared to these new OS builds that feel and look more like virtual machines than a real Mac OS. I hope all these diagnostics and interaction with senior engineers provide some solid solutions soon.

I started my iTunes account on my Dell Desktop years ago and want to know how to import my files onto my new MacBook Pro?
It should be in Favorites.
If not, click on the desktop then go to Finder menu > Preferences > Sidebar and tick Music.
Your Music folder is in Macintosh HD > Users > Your username. -

How can I delete files from My Mac Book Pro safely to create more space?
Hi,
I need to delete files from my Mac Book Pro and I am not sure how to do it safely without affecting my computers drivers or operations.
In my Finder - All Files Section there are certain files in the Preview, marked as "PNG Image", Window Image, GIF image, XLM. when I look at them they seem scripted or sections of an image. How do I know which files are safe to remove
I seem to find a lot of duplicated files - is there a way of stopping this from happening?
Thanks from a little frustrated Mac Book user.Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Transfer them to an external disk formatted in "MS-DOS (FAT)" with Disk Utility > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html
If you have the pictures in iPhoto, choose them with the Command key, go to File menu (on the menu bar) > Export, and copy them to the external disk. Then, connect your external disk to the PC and move them.
If you have the pictures in Finder, steps are the same, but in this case, you will have to drag the pictures you chose to the external disk that you can find in the Finder sidebar, under "Devices" -
How do I get the Airplay Icon to show on the System Preferences of my MacBook Pro?
How do I get the Airplay Icon to show on the System Preferences of my MacBook Pro? I want to be able to connect to my AppleTV.
I looked at that already. I've done everything it says: check to make sure wireless is working, make sure airplay is enabled, make sure device and apple tv are on the same network blah blah. The icon just isn't there. Unless I skipped a step. AirPlay works when I use it in the music app and in the video app, I jus can't get mirroring to work. I was looking at some other threads and mirroring doesn't seem to be working for a lot of people. Maybe I jus have to wait for an update =\

Why can I no longer import Mp4r files from my desktop (Macbook Pro) into Itunes? Seemed to work perfectly well before the latest upgrade. Feeling quite annoyed, especially when all the forums seem to give the same advice, which no longer seems to work!! Please can someone help! Uploading a file should not be this difficult!!!
Make sure you have the Quicktime Player 7 installed. It was an option when installing Lion. Or you can get it here: QuickTime Player 7 for Mac OS X v10.6.3 or later. Install it, reboot and try again.

I had a windows laptop, and I save files like photos, documents, videos and other things on an external hard drive, and now I want tomove those files to the Mac book Pro, and then move those files again toanother external hard drive 1T. My question is: Is it possible? Doing this willnot affect the files that I had in windows? No information is lost? or how cani do it?
Connect the external drive to your Mac and drag the files from it to your Mac's internal drive. Then dismount and disconnect the external drive, connect the 1TB external drive, and drag the files from the internal drive onto the external. Nothing will have been deleted from any of the drives up to this point; the files will only have been copied. Verify that the files are readable. There's no reason they shouldn't be; this is just a precaution.
Now if you wish to delete the files from any of the drives, drag them to the Trash, and Empty the Trash while the drive from which they came is still connected. If you disconnect the drive before emptying the Trash, the files you were trying to remove from it won't be deleted. They'll remain in the Trash and continue to take up space on the drive.
Note that if your external drives are in NTFS format, you won't be able to write anything to them or delete anything from them, though you will be able to read and copy the files they contain. The NTFS disk format is read-only to the Mac OS, unless you have a third-party NTFS driver installed. To make your drives cross-platform readable and writable, you must reformat them in the FAT32 or ExFAT format.
