Webstart without network connection...

Can anybody tell me if it's possible to use webstart to launch an application without a network connection (and not running a localhost server)? I want an application which can be run once from a server (networked location), then the laptop can be disconnected, and still be able to start the application.
TIA
Steve

Thanks for your help - one further question: whats the best way to include a data file (basic database) with a webstart application? I would prefer this to be random access, rather than have to read in an entire stream as this could become a large file. Also is there any way for the local copy to become writeable (updatable - synchronising back with the server copy is not a problem here).
TIA
Steve

  • How to recover from forcing a reboot in safemode without network connections

    hi,
I have a hp datavault x510, running windows home server. i wanted to remove a antivirus program which could only be completed when you rebooted in safe mode and deleted it. i forced the datavault to reboot into safemode however i didn't choose the option that says boot into safe mode with network connections, instead i choose without network connection.
since the datavault works through my router i of course need a network connection to access it. i tried to see if the it had a vga/dvi/hdmi connection so i could hook up a monitor to it but is doens't.
is there a way to reset the box to get it out of the forced safemode boot without network connection?

  • Install Windows without network connection

Trying to install Windows 7 Pro on a 2013 MacBook Pro (which I lovingly refer to as a very expensive paper weight).
The tools I have at my disposal:
    - Empty usb flash drive
    - The latest boot camp software downloaded as a .zip from App Store
    - External cd/dvd drive
    - Windows 7 Pro installation cd
    - .iso image made of installation cd (after I realized its too brain dead to use physical media)
    - NO NETWORK CONNECTION. (and this is the show stopper)
Cannot under any circumstances use wireless at the office and wouldn't you know it the machine doesn't come with a wired network adapter. Or a cd/dvd drive. Or a way to connect to a standard workstation monitor. All of those are extra. But I digress.
I've taken the machine home and used my home wireless to download the latest boot camp files (which now reside in the downloads folder as a .zip file). But I'll be damned if I am going to do this work at home in the evenings in my spare time.
So...back in the office with no internet. If I try to create a bootable usb it insists on re-downloading the drivers even though I already have them downloaded. If I manually copy the files over to the usb it balks because the usb drive is already bootable. If I skip the usb drive the windows install balks because it doesn't like the partition created by boot camp. Seriously???
There must be a way to do this. I have all the parts JUST NOT THE INTERNET CONNECTION. As you may have guessed I am a *tiny* bit frustrated at this point.

It has always been possible to activate Windows via telephone (you may have heard of such a device). Do you have anything useful to contribute to the discussion?
Back on topic: It would seem you need an internet connected Mac to create the USB boot drive. Once this is done however it should be possible to use this already created USB boot disk to do an offline install. Haven't tested it yet. Still this requires at least one machine connected to the internet in order to make this work.

  • Using iphoto 11 without network connection

I can't send pics to my email outbox from iphoto 11. In previous iphoto versions it was possible to work offline and photos would send once a network connection was made. IPhoto 11 won't let me do this. I tried looking in Help but this required a network connection too. Surely Apple can't expect the whole world to be online all the time? I use iphoto when travelling and am mostly not connected. Please help it is so disappointing. So I can't learn how to use iphoto on a long journey. Is the whole community this is designed for office-bound? Thanks

Thanks LH but I did that already, quit iPhoto, restarted my Mac and still all the options in the Share menu are greyed out. I can't believe Apple expects everyone to live with a connection 24/7!

No. it does not. No Arch installation would give you a desktop by default. It seems that you need to read more about Arch and its philosophy. You can however master your own ISO, if you are willing to go that route.
You might want to give some other distros a try. Maybe Debian or Ubuntu, or even Slackware which provides everything on a single CD or DVD.
I know Arch, but usually I install Arch with a NetInstall and I execute this command
    pacman -S xfwm4 xfce4-panel xfdesktop thunar xfce4-session xfce4-settings xfce4-appfinder xfce-utils xfconf
but this proccess is very slow and I thought that with core image that would be different.
Then I need a network connection....

  • Spotify not able to resume playing offline playlist without network connection

I got a playlist downloaded for offline play. When I stop playing the offline playlist, close Spotify from the app switcher, switch my iphone to airplane mode and re-open Spotify then I'm not able to continue to play the playlist that I paused earlier. At the bottom of the app I just see "Spotify is offline." If I disable airplane mode then my previously played song pops up from the bottom of Spotify app and I'm able to resume the playlist. Why does Spotify need network connection to resume a playlist that's downloaded for offline play?

vademecum wrote:I have that error myself and I figured that the host of the lyrics database changed the way external applications are allowed to access the content, thus breaking ncmpcpp's method of access and so it just defaults to the URL instead of fetching the lyrics.
Guess this will be fixed with the next version, if the author adapts the code of the lyrics module or adds new databases to replace the old ones.
Yeah I guess waiting for the update is the most practical solution right now.
Wintervenom wrote:Try the GIT version.  It will search from several lyrics databases at once.
Thanks a lot. I feel kinda stupid for not thinking of this sooner. This'll have to be my temporary solution until the one in the repos gets fixed.

  • Using Developer Workplace Without Network Connection

    Hi,
I have just installed the NW04s SR2 Developer Workplace.
Without connecting to any network, I tried to start up the J2EE Engine in the SAPMMC but it cannot start up saying
<b>Error occurred: Secure Store lib Dir does not exist
    MLEE20-1\sapmnt\J2E\SYS\global\security\lib\tools</b>
When I tried to access the shared drive
MLEE20-1\sapmnt, it says shared drive cannot be accessed.
But if I connect to a network, I am able to access my shared drive
    MLEE20-1\sapmnt
    My question :
    1.  Is there any way that I can startup the J2EE without connecting to the network?
Do hope to hear from you soon.
    Thanks.

    Hi Rajat,
I uninstalled the whole Developer Workplace NW04s SR2 from my laptop.
Next, I took out the network cable and login as a local user of the laptop.
This local user is in the Administrator Group.
I start the Developer Workplace SR2 installation and it keeps giving me this error message :

  • Using Time Capsule Without Network Connection

In my room I have a USB printer connected to my Time Capsule.  Without configuring the time capsule to connect to my home's wireless network I'd like to:
    - Back up to my time capsule wirelessly using Time Machine
    - Be able to print wirelessly
Is this possible? If so, how?
    Thank you.

    No it isn't possible.
Edit.. LOL!! my answer is opposite to BOB.. I assume you want internet at the same time. He is assuming you will swap from using internet to only using the TC in local network and hence removing all internet connections. So my answer is based on how to get them working at the same time.
What you want is two separate wireless networks.. with no links. And to use both networks simultaneously on only one wireless client card. No can do!!
    What is possible.
You have to connect the TC to the main wireless router. I strongly recommend this be done by ethenet or an ethernet replacement technology like Ethernet over Power EOP .. the adapters are now cheap and fast enough for wireless link. You will turn off wireless in the TC although you can also set it up with identical ssid and security on a different channel.. then you have one flat network and all devices can roam.
    Alternatively..
You need two wireless clients in the laptop/computer you use.
You can buy a usb stick compatible with the OS used.. os x although you nowhere state the type of system. USB stick wireless are cheap and plenty are available that will work fine with Mac OS drivers.
On the USB stick, setup manual network with different IP subnet to the main router, and no gateway or dns. This will allow you to communicate to two different subnets at the same time. (On OS X it does not strictly need such care with gateway and dns as you can control the order of devices better than on a pc.. just the same I would do it manually)
Of course you could also just plug in ethernet and do the same thing.
As per Bob definitely do the backup numero uno by ethenet.. it will take ages by wireless and the chance of a corrupted backup is so so much greater in which case it will just start again.

After iTunes gives up all the podcasts updates, right click on one title and select "Update podcast". Instead of the normal three at a time processing, let iTunes process this one podcast. If it works, and after it finishes the download of the/any new podcast episode, try the same trick on another podcast.

  • Upgrading IOS without network connectivity

    Hi
After upgrading one of our Cisco 2620 Router with a wrong version of IOS, the Router has lost all its interfaces. i.e. It does not show any interface at all in the show config.
What are the methods to retrieve the router back to its normal stage and upgrade with the correct IOS.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
    Regards // Anoop

If the network interfaces are down, your only other options would be:
    - Re-load the proper IOS via the console port.
---The usual procedure is to crank up the baud to 15.4KBaud to reduce the load time. I've found that there's a time advantage to loading a minimum IOS (IP Only IOS), then once the interfaces are back up, load the larger version using TFTP (depends on what ultimate version you need to load).
You can configure the router in ROMMON to do a IOS system load via TFTP or to boot from a BOOTP/TFTP server.
Here's the link for a console port load:

    No it wouldn't be possible.
I mean the network makes you communicate with others connect to one internal network. Though you can connect over cellular network.
Cellular network is still a network.

  • How to download a license without network?

My employer has decided to get rid of all the fixed phones and gave us all a mobile.
I got a Nokia 6303i Classic and I always wanted to try the Nokia navigation software so I bought myself a bluetooth GPS device.
When trying to install it I found out that, yes the maps are for free, but somehow you do need to get a license to use the navigation function.
Here is my problem: if I would like to get a license I need to have internet on the phone. But my employer has a voice only subscription so I am unable to use internet on this phone. Also via Nokia OVI suite I am unable to connect to the internet (my Samsung can use the internet connection of my PC).
How can I license the Navigation software without a network connection???
I would really like to use it in Thailand (no TomTom maps are available for Thailand) eventhough I expect the map to be of poor detail, any Navigation device will help out in that place!
    rgds, Sytse

    @wuyt
    Welcome to the forum!
Unfortunately there is no way around this issue without network connection, it is a considerable time ago that "Shop" function was available within Nokia Maploader application upon PC.
Unless you can borrow another SIM although you would need to ensure that license tied to IMEI of device not SIM itself, I can see no way forward.

  • HT201250 can a time capsule be used as just a backup for data without being connected to a home network?

This is the explanation for my my question about whether a time capsule can be used as a backup without being connected to a network.  I had to disconnect my time capsule when I upgraded my landline to a wireless home phone in order to go to a wireless security system that would work with my 2WIRE router. The time capsule blocked the usage of my camera on my security system, not allowing the camera to connect to the 2WIRE router. Once I disconnected the time capsule,  the camera was able to connect wirelessly to the 2WIRE.

As you can read, you can do what you want. You just have to set up the Time Capsule network in AirPort Utility without connecting it to the router and ignoring the messages, and connect to the Time Capsule network. You will have to switch between the Time Capsule and the other router's networks
