Wedding photographer - NEF+JPG?

Still evaluating LR2... questions:
I shoot RAW (Nikon, NEF, actually often NEF+JPG) for formals, but only JPG for dancing/action shots (since I shoot tons of these images and rarely need anything larger than a partial album page, and the image quality is fine). I've had no trouble importing the mix, but I'm a bit puzzled about exporting the soted and adjusted batch of images... It seems that the RAW image of a NEF+JPG is the only one visible, correct. (Yes, I know I can set the option to import both as two separate images, but that's not really what I want.)
What I need to end up with is a JPG of each selected image. So what happens if I export the selected set as JPEGs? The NEF files I guess are converted to JPEGs (or does it simply export the associated JPG file?) and what about the JPEG-only files? Are they siomply copied, or are new JPG files created (thus possibly increasing noise)? I can't seem to find this answer anywhere.... any insights would be greatly appreciated!

Dorin,
Thank you for your reply. What are the characteristics of said "high quality embedded JPEG" in the RAW files? Can you elaborate? Are you referring to the previews that LR generates and stores in the Lightroom\Preview folder (but thus can only be read by LR)? Or do RAW files from the camera come with a JPEG embedded?
One reason I would like to have the JPEG out of the camera is that I feel the JPEGs are often pretty good, especially out of my Olympus E-1 and E-3 and Fuji S5 Pro bodies. In fact, unless there are some exposure problems that I need the RAW files for so I can "rescue" them, a lot of times the JPEG engine in my E-3 and S5 Pro can do just as good a job as I can, if not better (unless I spend a bunch of time flogging the pics in LR). And the bonus is I don't have to spend any time editing them!
As well, I often like to use the JPEGs as reference. They're usually fairly good out of the camera, so before I edit the RAW pics, I like to check out the JPEG to give me an idea of how it should look according to the camera. That reference point allows me to make my adjustments to the RAW file more quickly, as usually it's at least half way to what the image should look like -- much closer than the RAW file is out of the camera, anyways, and almost always better than what the Auto Tone feature gives me.
So as you can tell, I do value the OoC JPEGs quite highly for a couple reasons. Does my rationale make sense, or is it fundamentally flawed? But more imporantly, is there any way to have them peacefully coexist in one's workflow? If it's not feasible, then that's the way it is, I guess*.
* - ( but surely, I can't be alone in this, as I recall reading on other forums debates about using RAW vs JPEG. Several of these debates eventually ended with the conclusion of "why not shoot both? Use JPEGs to save time and RAW when quality is critical or when you have exposure problems". Made perfect sense to me at the time...)

SOS!!! I just re-named NEF & jpg files in CS4 Bridge & they turned into "exec" files (& the WEDDING GIG images disappeared!) HELP PLEASE, anyone who knows the solution. I'm desperate.

God bless you!…I tried it with the 1st 2 files, which were NEFs & it worked. BUT I started with Raw & then shot mostly jpg…cannot "see" anything & am clueless as to which are which / any other ideas?

  • How can I save my images like a "wedding photographer" does?

    I have a Pixma PRO-100. . . with a Windows 8.1 PC. . . and printing through Adobe Photoshop Elements 11.
I just printed some wedding pictures of my daughter - which I got from the "wedding photographer"... when I printed them - they were an exact match to what I saw on my screen (which I've calibrated)... and dead on crisp, great quality.
I'm wondering what a wedding photographer does to their images to make them so "solid" in printing.  How do they save them?
when I print something from a my files, (Raw, NEF, or JPEG's) - there always seems to be a color or quality problem? Never a match.  It takes several adjustments and print samples before I get what I want.
Is the ICC Profile a problem - or How can I save my images like a wedding photog does?  So they print exact?

I suspect there are some minor differences you are not seeing and/or noticing on screen.  But right off, no real wedding photographer will shoot in anything except RAW.  You should be using RAW, only, too.  The RAW file to start with has way more info in it than any jpeg does.
Next I would bet your wedding photographer does some tweaking to highlights and shadows, plus s ome other stuff that you are not.  In other words he is getting the photos ready for printing. Remember printing on paper and "printing for on screen" is two different things.

  • Lightroom confused with NEF + JPG pairs

I moved a directory of NEF+JPG files from directory "A" to "B". And then deleted "A". When I did this, directory "A" disappeared from the library, as expected. But something went wrong. Directory "A" on the hard drive (when viewed with Windows Explorer) still exists, with all the NEF files still there. This is good. But Lightroom is now confused about NEF and JPG files.
All my JPGs now say "xxxx.jpg+jpg" for their names, and the NEFs are no longer in any folders in the library (still in the drive when viewed with Windows Explorer). All my changes are now "attached" to the JPGs. I said, fine, I'll just reimport the NEFs from another directory, but the import command tells me that those NEFs are still in the library, and so won't import them. Try as I may, I cannot find the NEFs anywhere in the library (they're not in the missing files folder). I panicked, and did an optimize database, and then a integration check, and backup. (Thinking back, this was probably a very stupid thing to do.)
My question is this. How do I either import the NEFs into LR (I'm willing to re-do the manipulatinos) or attach the NEFs to the JPGs again?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,
    Howard.

I have called Adobe about this. I had to re import the folders. The up side was that the files also still had all the edits done to them still. Big pain. Do you have the XMP files? they will also stay with teh files and they all show up again as NEF and JPEG.

  • Comparing and sorting raw (NEF) & JPG in LR

I am interested in importing raw & jpg and then comparing them.
I want to apply different effects on the raw files to see if I can match or better the jpg files as rendered by the camera
    (I use Nikon).
    Background:
In the past I have used L:R to view my Nikon NEF files side by side with JPG files from the camera and discovered the amazing versatility of the NEF files at fixing problems in image files and I have therefore always preferred working with RAW files.
But recently I read a discussion of NikonView (or maybe it was different editing software by Nikon -NX2?) compared to LR wherein several people agreed that Nikon is better at rendering its own NEF files than ADOBE  and they suggested that this was because Nikon engineers know the exact processes (algorithms?) they used to extract & compute the chip data and therefore can better engineer the right editing environment, while Adobe uses a "best guess".  I have no idea whether this is true but it seemed plausible.
Now I don't own the latest Nikon Software but I wanted to see if I could compare "good" JPGs out of the camera with the image Raw data in LR.
(Without having to buy the softwareor even open a free trial version)
The first thing I did was import NEF files and JPG files as separate imports into the same catalog, by changing my import settings.
It was easy to notice the difference on my screen. (How that translates to print, I dunno.)
What surprized me was that the JPGs out of the camera immediately looked better than the "Unproessed" NEF files.
(When properly captured.)  I don't expect them to be as easy to enhance as the raw files though.
But could I get the Raw file to resemble the JPGS?
I attempted to set the NEF files to my preferred camera profiles, ( was using portrait setting in camera)
Even upon eidting my first RAW file I noticed that if I wanted to match the JPGs, I would have to use other adjustments such as contrast, recovery etc.
I intended to do quick mass-adjustments to the RAW files to see if I could match or beat the JPGs for overall image quality
I wanted to use Synch to copy those setting to each NEF file.so I set out to sort out the NEF files and JPG files into different groupings and soon discovered I don't know how to do this:
IS THERE A QUICK WAY TO SORT / GROUP FILE TYPES IN LR?
Can I select just the RAW file or just the JPG files?
I know I can sort files by metadata,  but can't figure out how to sort by extension.
I realize I can do a workaround by removing the entire folder from the catoalgue and sorting them using windows explorer(XP) and then reimporting them separately.
But I think there should be an easy way to sort them right in LR.  But I fear there  is not.  Am I right?
Once I sort them I would be able to mass-apply settings (like contrast adjustments) to one set or another and do some side - by - side comparisons between the RAW files and the JPGs and get the most out of my photos.

To select by file type, go to the metadata panel in the Library filter (if this isn't showing check
Show filter bar in the view menu). Then click on any of the meta data panels and select file type. Select the file type you want to see.

  • Camera RAW: NEF - JPG color dessaster

    Hallo...
I use PS CS4 on my Mac. Normally I use Camera RAW to convert my D90 NEF-files to JPG-files without using Photoshop.
In Camera RAW look all colors great. When I convert the 12Bit-Raw-files to 8Bit-JPG's all colors look sad and gray.
    Where is my mistake??
In the export-dialog it's not important if i set 16-bit export or 8-bit export - the colors look like crap!
The only workarround i found is to rise the saturation and dynamic for 15-25 points. Is there no better way?

If you are saving to JPG directly out of Camera RAW and not enhancing further in Photoshop then you should probably save as sRGB, especially if you are putting the JPGs out for people to see on the internet.
What could be happening is that you’re saving as ProPhotoRGB or AdobeRGB but the viewer you’re using to verify the colors is not doing color-management properly so it is interpreting the colors as if the JPG was sRGB even though it’s not.
If you are going to be editing in Photoshop then keep the colorspace in ACR as 16-bit ProPhotoRGB and do the conversion to 8-bits and sRGB in PS just before saving as JPG.

  • Photostream: RAW (Nikon NEF)   JPG?

    Hi,
I am using the ipad camera connection kit to download photos made with my Nikon D90. I try using the photostream / icloud to transfer these photos to my PC.
It does work but not 100% as I expected:
    - When I only shoot in jpg mode, jpgs are transferred to the icloud and later to my PC
    - When I only shoot in RAW (NEF files) mode, RAW files are transfeerred to the icloud and later to my PC
    - When I shoot in Raw + Jpg mode only the jpg files are transferred to the cloud and later to my PC
I use Raw + jpg quite often so that I can work on the raw files when jpgs are not to my satisfaction.
However, if the photostream does only catch one of the two formats, then the whole idea of using the photostream when travellin becomes obsolete.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

  • D300 NEF & JPG in LR

Just got a D300 and was playing around, taking shots with NEF and JPG fine set. When I import in LR, all I see is the NEF file, not the JPG version. When I look in the folder that contains the images, both NEF and JPG versions are there. How do I get to look at the JPG version in LR? Thanks.

In the main Preference Dialog under Import check the third item, 'Treat Jpeg files next to raw files as Separate photos.
That should do it, though you will need do do an import or Synchronize on the Folders.

  • Removing JPGs from "NEF+JPG"?

Several months ago, I was shooting RAW+JPG and imported a fair number of photos into LR (now 1.4.1). I had the setting enabled that treated tham as "one" (and was impressed by the results). I have since decided I don't want the JPGs and wish to just keep the NEF's. What's the best way to remove the JPGs from LR's database? Since they're treated as one, I can't figure out a way to delete just the JOG and separating them has, so far, proved not to be an intuitive process.

Go back to My Pictures/ My Documents etc.., and delete all the jpg associated files. They have not been 'imported' in to LR because they are treated as 'same' as raw files; but they are in base folders nevertheless.
As an aside; it is quite interesting to change a digit in the name of a jpg file, and then import into LR. This will give you an opportunity to compare (in the Library module)the difference between how LR (ARC) translates your NEF/CRF file and the original jpg as it is produced from the camera. Assuming always you are shooting with either an Canon or Nikon.

  • Opening existing photographs or .jpg files

When I try and open some of my .jpg files, photoshop wants to create a new file. Its New file window opens. I can open and view these files in a different photo editor. I am not sure whats going on. Can someone please help me??

    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
It's just named MG7234.jpg .  As to the wrong extension, no as I mentioned. I can open it with another photo viewer / editor and it shows up fine.
Some viewers are tolerant of files that have the wrong extension.  Photoshop isn't, though usually it will just generate an error message that the input file parser couldn't deal with the file.
Is this a file right out of your camera?  Or has it been edited and resaved?
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
As to posting a file for others to try I don't know how to do that.
There are file upload services that you can use for free.  One such service is:  http://www.YouSendIt.com  Send the file to yourself, then when they provide the link you could post it here.
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
Is Photoshop 7 limited to a certain size file? I'm wondering if because some files are 7mbs and larger.
No.  Not at that level anyway.  You'd have to be talking about a file in excess of 32767 pixels on a side to get into worrisome territory with PS7.
What version of Windows are you running Photoshop 7.0 on anyway?

  • Feature requests for LR4 beta from a wedding photographer

I would love to see some more auto white balance algorithms.  There are many other algorithms that do an outstanding job that could be implemented to speed up workflow for busy photographers for when the lightroom autobalance doesn't work.  Some of these include:  i2e (colour science), perfectly clear, and xe847.
These 3 algorithms also apply an auto-toning feature which, when the Lightroom version doesn't work, these might give excellent results quickly.  Photoperfect is a program that implements these 3 technologies into its interface and is excellent for quickly tweaking jpegs and tiffs.  I would love to see this same capability married to Lightroom's excellent raw conversion engine and outstanding new highlight and shadow sliders.
A skin-tone white balance would be most welcome. Silkypix has this feature.  When there is no neutral coloured object, you can click on a skin-tone and this will often white balance the image correctly.
More profiles would be welcome.  To use Silkypix 5 Pro as an example again, it has 6 portrait profiles--these are most useful for achieving the perfect look for your photograph.  Some are good for single light sources, while others excel at providing pleasing colour under mixed light sources.
Sliders to fine tune noise reduction based on tone (ie. shadow, midtone, and highlight) would truly make Lightroom's noise reduction the gold standard.

As these requests may not make the final release, and we wouldn't want the request to get lost in beta land, might I suggest adding it as a suggestion on the Feature Request forum http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family where it can easily be tracked?  If you post the link to your request here, others can also vote on your request.  You may even find a few of them already requested over there, so you could add your vote.

  • Imac for Pro wedding photographer?

I am thinking of going to a Mac for my desktop, Have a macbook now for other things.
Any pros using the 24" Imac to edit photos?
Is the screen good enough for good color correction and can it be calibrated using monitor calibrators?
The other thing I need lots of storage, so using eternal hardrives will be necessary.
Also being locked into the one monitor. In the past I have upgraded my monitors every few years.
Would the power mac be the better more costly option for pros?

My experience with LCDs is that it's possible to calibrate them to reasonable accuracy, but they're not yet to the point where they compete with a high-quality CRT for color accuracy. There are some high-quality LCDs that are approching CRT quality, such as the LaCie units, but they're pricey. So it rather depends on how accurate you need to be (photo is a bit less demanding than prepress where you're risking a huge press run).
You might consider going with one of the 2.0Ghz iMacs with a 17" screen, then choosing an external, either CRT or LCD, for your primary "canvas" monitor. You'd then be able to choose the monitor that would best suit your needs.
    Regards.

  • Weird and serious LR bug: jpg + nef becomes jpg + jpeg!

ok, this sounds very strange, but I'm experiencing some serrious issues with LR 1.1. I've done some shootings with raw (nef) + jpg with my Nikon D200 camera.
I import to LR using the default setting where LR keeps track of both files, but only displays the raw-file (but showing the text: "nef + jpeg" when hovering a thumbnail).
    So far so good.
But lately I've experienced some bad beaviour.
When browsing some of these folders with nef + jpegs in LR, suddenly LR starts to work threw the thumbnails, regenerating them a lot brighter (I'm NOT talking about the initial small "adjustment" LR does to raw files).
And when hovering the affected images, it displays "jpg + jpeg" (!) instead of the usual "nef + jpg" message!
I'm I the first experiencing this??
I tried to manually synchronize the affected folder to get it back to the right condition. It didn't work succesfully (reimporting the files, but not grouping jpeg and raw together, and affecting the jpeg files with wrong adjustments). Only fix seemes to be: remove all the images from the folder in LR, reimport the images, and do all keywording, adjustments and final preparations for the images ALL over again.
None of the files seemes to be damaged or corrupt. I've not changed any folder or file outside of lightroom.
Because I have to reimport all images when this happens (experienced it with two or three folders now), I loose all my adjustments and work with the raw-files. Thats totally unacceptable, and I hope there is a sollution to this.
    thanks for any help!
    regards
    Carl

I too have come across this serious bug, which also occurs in LR 1.2 (see http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.3c051b42 ). I reported it on Adobe's bug reporting web page. It occurs when a folder is moved within LR and is difficult to recover from (the raw filenames in the lrcat are changed to .jpg). I have not had a problem moving selected photographs from one folder to another - just moveing an entire folder in the folder panel. My advice is not to move any folder within LR, move folders outside first, then go back to LR where the moved folder will be shown as missing (in red). Right click on it and use locate missing folder to restore the moved folder.

  • Nikon D90 RAW/NEF color vs. in-camera JPG color

I'm new to Aperture and also (now) taking more NEF+JPG images.
I've been satisfied with most of my JPGs in the past but I'm taking more RAW images now and finding that they don't match the JPG color when viewed in Aperture 3. When I use ViewNX to tweak RAW images the "starting point" for color and adjustments is much closer to the matching JPG but when I use Aperture, there are obvious differences between the JPG and Aperture's 'conversion' of the RAW image. The listed White Balance is different when Auto WB is used and the histogram is much different. The RAW image isn't a good starting point from which to begin tweaking to improve upon the JPG.
I realize that there are efforts by others to "profile" the Nikon cameras but I'm surprised that Aperture is so far off the mark. Both iPhoto and Photoshop Elements seem to do a better job.
    (The latest ACR is installed.)

I suppose it depends on what in-camera processing you're doing (Normal, Vivid, active D-lighting, etc). What you're seeing on the screen, and in ViewNX is edits applied to the jpeg embedded in the RAW file.
The RAW will always look different from the jpeg, because the RAW has absolutely no processing done to it. iPhoto should look identical to Aperture as I believe it uses the same RAW processing. PSE/Lightroom/PS all use ACR, and they should all look the same, but will likely look somewhat different from iPhoto and Aperture.
I generally just keep my D80 on Normal (and it doesn't have active D-lighting, but I can selectively add D-lighting in the edit menu if I choose (I don't)), and I find that a small .05 bump to Contrast, .1 to Definition, .05-.1 to Saturation, and .1 to Vibrance is about exactly what I see on the camera screen. It's a good starting point, and I just created a preset I apply to every image I import (had a very similar preset in Lightroom).
One thing you could do is set up a tripod, set your camera to RAW+Jpeg, and go through each of the color modes, and active D-light modes. Once you get those into Aperture, you can tweak the RAW to match it's Jpeg, and save that as a preset. Then the next time you're out shooting, when you bring in your RAW images, you can just apply whatever preset (Normal, Softer, Vivid, etc) to them, and you'll have a starting point matching the out of camera Jpegs.
I'm actually planning on doing just that for my D80, and eventually when I upgrade to a D300 doing the same for it.

  • How to keyword both NEF and JPG files?

I use a Nikon D300 and shoot NEF+JPG. I ingest the files to my hard drive using Downloader Pro and then import them into Lightroom. Lightroom apparently "stacks" the NEF and JPG files together, and the thumbnail is shown as filename.NEF+JPG. When I keyword the files, the keywords are applied only to the XMP sidecar to the NEF file, and not to the JPG files.
While I guess this "NEF+JPG" is called a stack, this appears to be some kind of special stack, as I cannot unstack the images and keyword them separately. Selecting "Stacking->Expand all stacks" does nothing. "Stacking->Unstack" is disabled.
How can I get the keywords applied to the JPG files as well as to the NEF/XMP files?
    Thanks.
    Guy

OK, I found that option and will try it.
What's the best way of recovering the directories I have already imported with NEF+JPG files? I presume I could delete those directories from the LR database and import them again. (I have enabled the option always to write to XMP.)
That would, I hope, give me both NEF and JPG files showing up in LR. Is there an easy way to copy the keywording from each NEF to the corresponding JPG file?
    Thanks.
