Week 24 MBP Works Great! Thanks Everyone...

Hi Everyone,
First of all I just wanted to thank everyone who participates in this forum. I spent a lot of time on here for research purposes before purchasing my MBP in June and learned a lot, so I thought I'd do my part and drop a quick review of my MBP.
For people who are thinking of buying a MBP but are concerned about the whine, or the heat, just know, THEY'RE NOT ALL BAD. This is only the second notebook I've owned so I don't have much to compare it to, but I love my MBP.
It does get warm, but there have been no kernal panics, no burns, none of the things that I saw people complaining about when I was doing research. I'm resting my wrists/hands on my MBP as I type right now and its definetely warm, it'll probably feel really nice in the winter time, but its not "hot," and this is the absolute warmest it gets. The only part that gets to a point I'd consider "hot" is the thin strip of aluminum above the F keys, but its hot enough to burn anyone, I could rest my finger there as long as I wanted and not flinch, and u never really need to touch up there anyways. I haven't tried using it on my lap so I can't speak to how hot it gets there, but ur not supposed to use it on ur lap. On a desk, my MBP is fine heat-wise.
As far as the whine goes, it's not silent all the time, sometimes there is a very very quiet noise that simply sounds like the CPU working, but it's only noticeable in a quiet room and it seems to be very normal and expected. What notebook is COMPLETELY silent??? Now although the noise is very very quiet, it does contain a very high pitched frequency that might bug some young people with sensative hearing in a very quiet room, but I'm 20, I can hear it, and it does not bother me. It's not loud at all, it's just really high pitched...
The only thing that I don't love is the superdrive. Again, I'm no expert, but it doesnt seem very sturdy to me. U have to practically shove the disk all the way in to get it in, and it's very loud going in. Then when I burn a disk it can get very very loud when the disk is spinning, and it has difficulty reading a lot of CD's. It seems very random to me. Sometimes it will have no problem reading an old, scratched up CD-R, but then I'll try inserting a brand new album I just bought from a music store, and it won't read it. It seems to get pickier the more u use it, like after importing a bunch of CD's into iTunes it has trouble, and giving it a break does seem to do the trick, but it really shouldn't have those problems.
Everything else it wonderful. It's fast as ****, it looks good, and it's given me no serious troubles. So far I'm very happy with my purchase and I can't wait to get deeper into it (it's my first Mac).
Oh, I forgot, it did get stuck in sleep mode about a week ago, but all I did was remove the battery and reset it real quick, and since then everythings been fine.
In case ur wondering, mine's a custom built, 15.4", 2.16 GHz, 2 GB, 100 GB 7200 rpm. Shipping was ultra fast too. Any questions feel free to ask.

same here. i was used to the way my optical drive worked on
my TiBook, and this MBP superdrive does indeed "think different".

since you just bought it, you might want to make sure
there isn;t actually a latent problem there before your
14 day return period ends... did you buy it at an apple store?
if so, find a way to reproducibly reproduce the problem,
then go show a genius....

i too noticed that if i just close the lid (without sleeping it
explicitly first, like i did a million times on my TiBook)
that it doesn't always really sleep.
not having the time or interest to really investigate
it, what i do now is explicitly sleep it (from the apple
menu), then i wait 5sec until i see the LED start to pulse
before i close the lid....

oh - the 14 day return period i mentioned earlier doesn't apply to you
as you got a CTO machine... take it to a genius if you can, if
not post back...
FWIW i have precisely the same machine as you... and i too feel like
my machine is just wonderful.... congrats on your new baby...
