WEIRD ACTIVITY - started with random activation of Voice Over Utility

Ok, really weird s**t happening with my PowerMac G5 running OSX 10.4.5 - while operating Logic Pro, the Voice Over Utility suddenly activated. I went in to disable it and noticed that Restart, Shut Down, and Log Out repeat in the pull down Apple menu. So in descending order, it is: Sleep, Restart, Restart, Shut Down, Shut Down, Log Out, Log Out. Everytime a website loads in Safari, a small audio sample of a sleigh plays. What the f**k is going on? Anyone else experiencing anything similar? Any help would be MUCH appreciated.
PowerMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Hello Adam,
Not really weird. I assume that a command in Logic Pro (or a shortcut you've set yourself) is cmd-F5 or something similar. This is the keystroke to activate VoiceOver.
Once VoiceOver is activated, it does duplicate the commands on the Apple menu—you'll notice that the second occurrence of each has no ellipsis, showing that the dialogue box that would normally appear will be inhibited. Similarly, in Safari, when a page is loaded, VoiceOver signals completion of loading to the blind user by the little sleigh tune.
Suggest you investigate the shortcuts in Logic Pro and change any that conflict with the system (via System Preferences—>Keyboard and Mouse).

  • How to stop voice over utility from running

Accidentally activated voice over utility and now I can get it to stop running, despite uninstalling it.

    Hello Stixs424,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
To turn off VoiceOver please follow the directions below.
You can turn VoiceOver on and off at any time; you don’t have to restart your Mac or log in again.
Press Command-F5. If VoiceOver is on, pressing Command-F5 turns it off.

  • Recording your own commands for the Voice Over Utility

To Record your own commands for the Voice Over Utility?
    Is this possible?
    How?
    thanks

If you simply want to change the command used, or add an extra command that does the same thing, you just need to know that the file names are used as the name of the commands for Speakable Items.
If you open system preferences, the speech pane, select "Speech Recognition" at the top and then "Commands" on the next line there's a button there - it's labeled "Open Speakable Items Folder". Click on that and it shows you a folder containing all the global commands. If you want to change one of these, you can edit the file name. It's probably safer if you duplicate the file ("duplicate" from the context menu) and then change the name of the copy, so the original is still there in case of mishaps! I'm not sure if a comma in the file name would work but I suspect it wouldn't - none of the commands there have commas in them.
If you want to change a command in a specific application then open the "Application Speakable Items" folder and explore from there.
Another thing which might help is to go back to System Preferences and click on the "Global Speakable Items" in the command set list and then click the "Configure" button. There's an option there which will make more variations on the commands work.
The most complicated way is to write your own new speakable items. This gives you the most flexibility but also you need to learn some AppleScript to enable you to do it. If you want to learn AppleScript, check out the AppleScript resources - it does lots more than just speakable commands and the general resources should help you most.
    Best of luck!

  • Problem with Decklink card during voice over

    Hi,
i have PMG5 2.5 GHz with FCS & Blackmagic Decklink extreme card.
all these days i had a great time working on FCP . till i faced a peculiar problem
when i am capturing video from Beta or DV 50 , i am able to select video Only or Audio only , or Video & Audio .
but when iam trying to capture Audio Only option through the the Mic which is connected to the mixer, i am not able to capture audio.
even i have noticed one more strange thing, i have tried Voice Over tool in FCP 5.04 with Decklinik card and i am not able to grab any audio through the Decklink card.
but i can use built in audio for my voiceover.
has anybody come across this kind of problem,
    can somebody help me .

    Hi Rajendra,
your questions is marked as solved, but I haven't seen your question answered, so I might be wasting time. Anyway.
I bumped into the same problem not long ago. I'm using a Multibridge, but the problem and solution are the same. Here's the reply I got from Kristian Lam over at Blackmagic:
In order to get vo tool in Final Cut Pro HD to work, these are the
    steps to follow:
    1) Video Input in Blackmagic DeckLink preferences is set to match the audio input type. For example, if you're recording via the XLR connectors of your card, then then 'Inputs' under 'DeckLink Video Connections' must set to analog. It doesn't matter if it's component or composite analog video.
    2) In the View menu of Final Cut Pro HD, set External Video to “Off”. When finished with the Voice Over tool, set External Video to “All Frames” to use the broadcast monitor.
    3) You must have a stable video signal going into the card when using the vo tool or Final Cut Pro HD will not see the audio. (or use a Blackburst generator)
    4) Use the Displays menu to set the DeckLink desktop to the same format as the video source, eg. NTSC 720 x 486.
Well, then select your Decklink Card in the Voiceover Input selection. Even after I had done all that, I couldn't see any audio coming into FCP. The solution to that was to raise the Trim at the top of the mixer. I got a nice signal into the Mackie and voilà also sound into FCP.
    Hope this helps,
    Colin

  • How to make a movie from a PowerPoint with a voice over

Hi - as the title suggest, I'd like to record a movie of a PowerPoint presentation with me providing the voice over. I'd then post this onto our company intranet for others to review the presentation.
Any ideas how I'd do this?
    Thanks

An easy way would be to export each powerpoint slide as a JPEG file. Import these into an iPhoto album. Drag the iPhoto album into your movie through the Photo Browser and add your voiceover.
It might also be possible to export your powerpoint presentation as a QuickTime movie, but it would be important to do it as a timed presentation rather than a manually advanced presentation, because iMovie will not import manual advance tracks, closed captioning tracks, chapter tracks, etc.
I have imported presentations from KeyNote but have never tried a PPT.

  • MAC Voice Over: Why does the screen view lag behind the voice over audio?

    MAC Mac OS X 10.6.8 (10K549)
When using voice over on a MAC with DE 1.8 - most times when paging thru a pdf file/book the voice and the view are inconsistent.  When using VO -  moving to the next page with the right arrow key - the audio starts to read the next page (correct), but the display is one page behind (not correct).  For readers - especially those that have significant visual impairment  - this will not work for them.  Is this a defect - and if so - I would be very happy to re-test this feature if a new revision of DE 1.8 is provided.
I am unsure this is the correct forum to raise issues such as this one.  I am in the process of evaluating Adobe DE 1.8 - my sister is blind and I am trying to move her to a MAC with VO.  I really appreciate Adobe's effort in supporting JAWS and MAC VO - thank you on behalf of all disabled folks out there.
Below is a detailed list of steps to re-produce this audio/screen inconsistency issue.
    - Install DE 1.8 and add to the dock
    - Add a pdf file/book to DE 1.8.  For my issue, I am adding the "Voice Over Getting Started" guide.
    - Turn on Voice Over - Cmd+F5
    - Using VO - Go to the dock and select DE and start it.  The "Last Read Book" typically is the focus for the VO cursor.  Then using VO next item (VO+right arrow) - move the VO cursor to "Library Content Table".  This is the list of books that are displayed in DE.
    - Using the up/down keyboard arrows - move up and down thru the books in the content list.  At this point - you should already see that the VO audio announcing the title of a book is not synchronized with the row in the table that is displayed.  The voice is announcing a book that you selected, but the display is showing the previous book.
    - Once you hear (not see) the book you want to test with, hit <enter>.  DE will open the book and start to read using VO.  At this point the screen and audio for the first page in the book are the same.
    - Once the book has been opened by DE - Using the right arrow key navigate to the next page in the pdf/book.  Normally the right arrow key is the short cut to allow a user to move forward or backwards thru a book, one page at a time.
    - With DE and VO - what happens is that VO responds to the right arrow key and starts to read the next page.  But the screen is still showing the previous page.  Hence the screen and the VO audio are out of sync.
    - For anyone that uses MAC VO - this will prevent them from using Adobe DE 1.8.
If I am doing something incorrect - please let me know. If you need any assistance or further information regarding this issue - please email me.
    Best Regards
    Mike R

    hi, Mike R:
Thanks for your information. We have tested several Mac machines, iMac and MBP (use the same version as yours). But we can't reproduce the issue. Actually working with VoiceOver is a fundamental request for our application, we did test them before releasing the build.
We suggest you test other applications, e.g. Finder, Preview and iTunes, to make sure if VoiceOver works fine with them. Or can you please check if your VoiceOver settings are correct?

  • Use voice over speech as text-to-speech

    Hello,
I really like Mac OS X Lion's option to download new high-quality speech voices, and I have made a habit of listening to my e-books by enabling the "option + esc" in speech preferences as a shortcut to read highlighted text.
However, any unfamiliar words are read incorrectly, I have no way to modify a "pronounciation" list like you can in voice-over utility (speech -> pronounciation). This is a huge inconvenience as I can create a proper dictionary there for pronouncing things correctly, but with text-to-speech I cannot. Anyone know if there's a way to tap into this pronounciation dictionary? If you think this is worthwhile feature you should post here anyway, maybe Apple will take note
    Regards,
    Denis

You can wait unless the problem you have is stopping you from completing the job. In that case...
You can do this anytime. Connect the new drive and change the scratch drive preferences in SYSTEM SETTINGS. Do not create folders, simply select the root of the drive you wish to use. Once you have done so for both the Capture Scratch and Render files, FCP will create project specific folders on the new drive. Save the project and close FCP. You will then have to copy the elements from the old scratch drive to the appropriate folders on the new drive. Launch FCP, open your project and then reconnect the media in your project, directing it to the new drive. FCP will likely not connect to the render files once they have been moved so you may have to re-render your sequence.
Before you do any of that, you might try trashing FCP Preferences first to see if that fixes the problem and allows you to finish the job.

  • Can I speed up or slow down a voice-over straight from iMovie 09?

So I'm making a video with different clips and voice-overs, and I want some of the voice-overs to be high pitched and sped up. When I clicked on the clip settings and sped it up, it didn't sound the way I wanted to..it was not high pitched, it just sounded like two voices being combined? If anyone knows the solution to this, PLEASE help me out! Thank you!

Simple way is to make two  Razor Cuts in your Clip and speed up that section.
Other way is 'Time Remapping' ...which will allow ramps in and out.  Check Video Tutorials on this.

  • Any better voices for Voice Over?

Does anyone know if there are any other voices for the Voice Over utility? Does Apple offer any? How about free ones?

It's an interesting question, Your Majesty!
Apple offers no other voices at the moment, though there are some queued up for Leopard when it comes out in the spring.
I haven't found any free voices either, though there are some Unix ones that would need to be compiled and installed—not a process for the faint-hearted.
Voices from Cepstral are available in a number of languages, and are comparable in quality to the Apple voices. They cost $29.99 apiece, and integrate quite well with VoiceOver, although there are occasional stability problems.
Other voices are available from Acapela as part of their Infovox iVox package. They work best when integrated with the VisioVoice package from AssistiveWare. This costs $249, but there is a special deal at $185 until 31st December 2006. The voices alone are available through AssistiveWare at $199 for US English, with again a special offer price until 31st December of $149. This gives you 5 high-quality (HQ) voices, which are a great deal better than any of the Apple or Cepstral offerings, and 2 high-definition (HD) voices, that sound less lifelike but can cope with special characters, and distinguish between upper- and lower-case letters.
In particular, the British English voices (slightly more expensive, but can be added separately) are superb quality—the best text-to-speech on any platform anywhere. I can also confirm the quality of the French voices, but am not qualified to judge the others!

  • Voice Over Navigation Settings

I am having difficulty with the navigation settings in the Voice Over Utility. I would like to use VO to read a newspaper. I can read the heading of each article but not the text. So I want to select the article with my mouse and then let VO take over. I don't seem to be able to find the right combination of choices in the navigation panel of the utility. Could anyone help?
    Thanks. Mary

    Hi Archie,
I just installed Leopard and see that the VO Utility has changed a bit, but I will wait until I get your advice before I experiment. I would like to use VO to read newspapers online, but I want to be selective and jump around a lot. I am able to see the headings but the content of the articles. So I would like to point to an article using the mouse pointer and cursor and have the reading begin. Then I would like to go to an article on a different page or section of the paper.
In the Tiger VO utility, I was never able to select the right combination in the navigation panel. In Leopard, it appears that I would choose only "Voice Over cursor follows mouse cursor," right? And leave everything else unchecked?
Thanks for your help. . .

  • Voice Over Custom Pronunciations not Sticking?

    Hi,
I'm trying to customize the pronunciations in the Voice Over utility in Lion and they're not working. I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem or if I might be doing something wrong.
Here's what I've done so far:
-Opened Voice Over Utility and selected the 'Speech' tab
-Selected 'Pronunciation' and made 4 entries
-The original word is under the 'Text' heading
-The new pronunciation is under the 'Substiution' heading
-'All Applications' is selected under 'Application' (I assume this would mean that the changes should take effect in all apps)
    -'Ignore Case' is checked
I open up TextEdit and type the 4 words. Each word is entered under its own line and a period is after it for a pause. I hit Option+esc and the new pronunciations are ignored.
I've logged out and tried again. Still no substitutions are heard--only the original mis-pronunciation.
I've rebooted and tried again. Same thing.
Any idea what I might be doing wrong?

You do realize voicemail is a carrier feature.  What have you done to fix this, have you gone in and at least try to change the greeting?
