Weird Activity?

Hi. My new Mac Mini has just started behaving oddly. When switched off, the fan runs for 20-30 minutes and when I try to restart, the fan runs but no power light shows. Eventually I get it to start and it runs OK but maybe a little slow at times.
I have gone to Repair Disk Permissions - no change - but when I looked at the Console these messages repeat every 10 seconds:
28/05/2010 11:02:28 NML2NDeviceObserver[718] Executable to id(de.novamedia.Vodafone Mobile Connect) keychain(-AllowedDeviceRules)

Any suggestions or help in sorting this out??
Thanks

Hi,
I found another thread mentioning the above error. You might want to check it for possible solutions: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11441161&#11441161.

  • Weird - Activity Monitor Network Traffic vs iStat Traffic

With no applications running on my MacBook Pro, the Network tab of the Activity monitor is showing 'Data received/sec" toggling every second or so between 1.38 KB/s and 2.75 KB/s.  It's showing the same numbers for 'Data sent/sec' as well.  I can't figure out what is causing this network traffic.  But if it's real, it's adding up to about 5 GB a month of bandwidth usage.  My cap is only 60 GB so it's significant.
But when I use iStat or the Net Monitor app to monitor throughput, they show 0.0 traffic when the system is idle.  Also, since last night Activity Monitor shows 322 MB data received and 99 MB data sent.  While iStat shows 239 MB received and 16 MB sent.
So which is correct?  Does Activity Monitor also include traffic that is internal to my network?  Or do I have a phantom bandwidth hog somewhere?
Thanks for any insight to the weirdness.
    Jim

The switches at home and at work generally corroborate the activity shown by tcpdump / atMonitor / MenuMeters, not the continuous data flow shown by Activity Monitor. The MacBook Air I'm sitting at right now shows similar discrepancies, with traffic totals in Activity Monitor about 40x higher than those shown with the other tools and a steady and inexplicable (and by other means invisible) 29-34 KB/sec of both sent & received traffic. tcpdump shows periods of network silence between 2-15 seconds in length (in between DNS lookups; netbios syncs; ntp queries; ipp messages; http, pop, and imap messages; etc. happening in bursts as one would expect).
Changing Activity Monitor to refresh every half second shows the mystery traffic as a burst of 112 KB sent & received every two seconds--and no, that's not the same throughput as the 29-34 KB seen at 2-second refresh intervals. When I set refresh to every 5 seconds, the mystery throughput drops to 22 KB / sec. As the throughput varies depending on refresh interval, I wonder if I'm seeing internal loopback queries (or something of that sort) contributing to the totals. Is it possible that the mystery traffic is of AM's own creation, and only exists within the machine and is not actually sent on the network?
Lest we digress further into general network troubleshooting techniques, let me restate the question, perhaps a bit more clearly: has anyone else seen this traffic-volume discrepancy between the Activity Monitor's Network tab and other network monitoring tools, and does anyone have an explanation for it?

  • WEIRD ACTIVITY - started with random activation of Voice Over Utility

Ok, really weird s**t happening with my PowerMac G5 running OSX 10.4.5 - while operating Logic Pro, the Voice Over Utility suddenly activated. I went in to disable it and noticed that Restart, Shut Down, and Log Out repeat in the pull down Apple menu. So in descending order, it is: Sleep, Restart, Restart, Shut Down, Shut Down, Log Out, Log Out. Everytime a website loads in Safari, a small audio sample of a sleigh plays. What the f**k is going on? Anyone else experiencing anything similar? Any help would be MUCH appreciated.
    PowerMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Hello Adam,
Not really weird. I assume that a command in Logic Pro (or a shortcut you've set yourself) is cmd-F5 or something similar. This is the keystroke to activate VoiceOver.
Once VoiceOver is activated, it does duplicate the commands on the Apple menu—you'll notice that the second occurrence of each has no ellipsis, showing that the dialogue box that would normally appear will be inhibited. Similarly, in Safari, when a page is loaded, VoiceOver signals completion of loading to the blind user by the little sleigh tune.
Suggest you investigate the shortcuts in Logic Pro and change any that conflict with the system (via System Preferences—>Keyboard and Mouse).
    HTH

  • Connectivity weirdness - unrecoverable loss in connection

Hey everyone. I'm having a very weird problem occuring randomly (several times) thoughout the day.
I have a local network with my G5, PB and PC (ugh) connected to my DLink DI-624 Router. Everythings been working great for years.... (though I remember having this problem a while back)
Every once and a while my connection goes down on my G5, but the other machines work fine. (It's not the router...restarting it doesn't help)
Checking my G5 when the connection is down, I see that my IP which was local and statically set to an IP on my DHCP router changes from the local IP to a random external (169.xxx.xxx.xxx) different one that is no even my external IP.
Also, there is an error in my console.log that says:
    repeated transitions for interface en0
and my system.log says a lot more:

The only thing that brings the connection back up (that I have found) is restarting the machine. On restart, everything is back to normal.
Does anyone know of anything I can do to get this to stop happening and/or a way to get the connection back when it does without restarting?
    ANY help would be appreciated
    Powermac G5 2.5DP   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

This problem is still happening. I've tried changing cables, changing router ports, re-installing the router firmware. etc. Its still occurring. Its not the router b/c all my other 6 devices don't lose their connections.
i've noticed that sometimes it switches to that weird 169.xxx.xxx.xxx address. I lose connection. go to my network prefs, and it reconnects. But most times, it goes to that weird ip and never goes back. I can;t get the connection back or get to the router.
Rebooting the machine is the only thing that fixes it. temporarily.
Here is a look at the latest system.log activity. You can see that there's some weird activity during 12:19 and 1:13 when it finally loses connection. Any one have ANY ideas here?

  • Strange Recurring Activity Z87 (Hard crashes no BSODs)

Hey guys, this is my first post here and I was wondering if I could get some help. I have been lurking the forums trying to find someone that has the exact same problem as me, but no luck.
So let me start with what happened most recently. I was playing Warface (newer PC game, load intensive), and all of the sudden both my monitors go dark and EVERY fan on my case goes up to 100% RPM (this has happened many times before, still looking for a solution). So I thought not much of it and held down my power button to manual shut off my PC and reboot. Here is when the new activity started, that concerns me. When I tried to boot again, only my components that have direct lines to my PSU were powering up (case fans, HDD, SSD, etc). I thought my Z87 had bit it, but I noticed the "audio booster," or whatever that label is called on the mobo was lit up. So I waited about 8 minutes and tried again. Everything booted up normally.
Just to preemptively answer any questions:
My PC's temp were all in normal ranges.
Firmware/drivers of all of my components are up-to-date.
    Here are my specs:
Operating System: Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit
    CPU: Intel Core i5 4670K @ 3.40GHz: 33 °C Haswell 22nm Technology
    RAM: 12.0GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 666MHz (9-9-9-24) (two Corsair 2gb, two G.Skill 4gb)
    Motherboard: MSI Z87-G45 GAMING (MS-7821) (SOCKET 0): 30 °C
    Graphics: ASUS ML228 (1920x1080@60Hz) G918w1 (1440x900@60Hz) 3071MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 (EVGA): 28 °C
    Storage: 223GB Crucial_CT240M500SSD1 (SSD) 465GB Western Digital WDC WD5000AAKS-00V1A0 (SATA): 33 °C
    Audio: Realtek High Definition Audio
Hopefully someone has some ideas, I have been really bummed out since this weird activity only started plaguing me about a month into my build...
    Thanks.

might be a PSU issue as to me that sounds like a PSU OCP (Over Current Protection) cut out or a rail dropped out somewhere and it took time to come back
what PSU do you have exactly?
Hey badboy2k, I have a Corsair CX600M. It was the minimum recommended PSU for my build.

That's just about the worst RAM mixing combination on the planet!    Go with just the Corsairs, or just the other yucky brand. Better yet, get a factory matched and tested together 2X8GB kit of Corsairs, or 4X4GB Corsairs.
Hey Sea Dog, does mixing the RAM really cause a lot of problems? I have ran memtest three times and there was never any issues. These sticks were hand-me-downs from my previous rig.

  • Problems with EFI Firmware Update to 1.5 for mid 2010 Mac Pro, and sleep issues

Hello to the community, I have run into an annoying issue.
I need to update the EFI firmware on my 8 core mid-2010 Mac Pro. I downloaded the EFI update from the apple website from here : http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1321
But everytime I download it, as I click to install, it gives me the message:
    Alert
This software is not supported on your system.
But clearly this is the correct EFI for my computer. I tried burning the Firmware restoration onto a CD from here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1320
But the computer did not respond the way it said it should (with the 3 flashes/beeps etc.) and have the optical drive open for the CD.
    So I'm completely stuck.
*Also my Mac Pro had issues with sleep, when I put it to sleep, sometimes when I try to bring it back, it restarts itself, and other times, it just turns itself on and the monitor screen remains black, so I have to hit the power button to turn it off then back on again. This only happnens when the computer has been put to sleep for a slightly extended period of time, roughly 20mins +, sometimes longer.  I was trying to solve this problem by first updating the firmware because I think it could be related to that, but I've had this problem with the firmware so I couldn't find out. This is actually the bigger problem for me because it will affect my work. I am currently using an iMac while I fix up this mac pro.
I'm a music composer so I've upgraded many aspects of my system due to work. I have a 1TB Samsung 840 evo SSD, 2 seagate 2 TB HDD, and 1 WD 1TB HD (the original one in the mac pro), along with 32 GB of RAM. So my only problems are the firmaware and the weird activity when the computer is put to sleep.
Some help would be greatly appreciated!

  • 27" iMac freezing daily (late 2009)

Been having this problem for a long time...through at least 3-4 OS versions, and prior to a recall HD replacement iirc. No apparent rhyme or reason....it just locks up, including the cursor with no warning and requires a power cycle to restart. No forewarning or apparent odd behavior (aside of a general lagginess and regular beachballs that I'm guessing is more to do with it's age than anything) The only common condition I can think of it that it's always when Safari is running and being used, but since that's pretty much always the case, I don't see it as a critical data point.
It happens roughly daily, but that's likely more based on my typical usage and would increase or decrease as such. I've seen a few similar issues posted in random searches over the years, but never a solid resolution to those cases. There is lots of log activity in the seconds prior to or during these crashes, but is sadly all Greek to me.   Here is a text file of that period from today if it helps: crash0218.rtf
    Spec-wise, it's a 2.8 i7, 1TB(@ prob 93% full), 8GB, ATI 4850 (512)
I keep hoping that each new OS or Safari version will magically correct it, but it doesn't seem like that's going to happen, haha, so I'd appreciate any ideas or input as this is becoming really frustrating and I'd really like to get another year or so out of this machine if possible.

    Thanks for the responses.
The OS is current, just an old signature.
I've definitely had TuneUp (iTunes tagging utility) a long time, but don't remember seeing weird activity from it in the past. It's a fairly new version (~3 days) so there might be some permissions issues with it or something? It wasn't running at the time, nor was iTunes.

  • Ical loosing events / reappearing later after Lion upgrade

    Hi all,
This is a new one for me - now that we've upgraded our computers to Lion, we're seeing some weird activity on iCal.  A newly added event will suddenly dissappear, then reappear later, and maybe go again again.  We've got our calendars sync'd to Mobile-Me, and it's been working fine for quite awhile.  Now suddenly we're seeing strange behavior - my wife spotted it first, adding an event she needed for the next day, then not spotting it a few hours later.  She added it again, and then after awhile, BOTH appeared.  For me, I've got an app that adds events automatically, and I actually watched it appear on iCal, and less than 20 seconds later, it vanished!  I hit refresh, and refresh all, to no avail.  THEN  I added the event again, and after a few seconds, BOTH appeared.
Anyone else seeing such weirdness?  We sync both our computers, iPhone, and iPad via Mobile me.  I searched this and other forums, and though I found a few similar threads with sync problems with external calendars (google, et.al.), nothing shows for all-mac problems.
    many thanks,
    dm

    Rob -
doesn't always work for me - yesterday i added an event, then modified it (title and set all day) then done, and it vanished.  added another and IT vainished too quickly to edit.  BusyCal showed both, mobile-me showed both (syncd on ipad/iphone showed both) just having problems on my local machine where i generate the events.  same with my wife's computer, her events vanish, but show up on mine.
it's infuriating, since our business relies on these calendars.  we've gone back to using paper ones until this gets fixed.
the scary thing is that it doesn't seem to be iCal - more the database iCal uses, calendarStore - because an app that lookes at that shows them missing, too.
Restarting the computer brings back the missing ones.

  • Forms 9i variable assignment BUG

    Hello All,
I've been working with Forms 9i for a while now and on my current form and I am experiencing very weird bugs.
All bugs seem to have the same nature of an Assignment taking place where the bug will occur.
My form is a block to block form , not Master-detail relationship. On my first screen, I have 1 block (with a few fields on the last screen). That belongs to one table. I then have another block, a child to the first block. Then I have a third block for yet a child of the child of the first block. Then I have a last screen with the few fields of the first block. So I have 4 screens and 3 blocks, with a Dummy block for some side processing. Each screen is connected with a BACK and NEXT button and I have various other buttons on the first like BROWSE, QUERY, CANCEL, NEXT, PREVIOUS etc. With SAVE, DELETE, SAVE AND EXIT. Etc
    Example #1:
    I started noticed weird activity when I was getting an Exception of some type occuring on the WHEN-BUTTON-PRESSED trigger of any button where in the trigger code there was an ASSIGNMENT. ex. :dummy.text := 'Normal';
My Solution: Was to avoid having forms compile your module for you on the fly when you run the form. I compile mine manually after each change I make to it. I no longer encountered this problem.
    Example #2:
Text 'Normal Mode' were appearing in a few of my fields, different fields at different times this bug occurred. This text is familiar to my form and I use it in a non-editable field on the form to show the user they are in normal mode. But when I then run the form in debug mode to see the form repeat this act of placing that text into the inappropriate field (when there is no code present in the form where I have access to, that would accomplish this) the bug doesn't occur and the form seems to then work fine (with help in compiling the trigger where the bug was occurring).???
No solution, accept to run in debug mode and it goes away.. magicallly..?
    Example #3:
Same deal as the second one, but this time the result of the text being placed in an inappropriate field ends up saved into the database and that is just not GOOD,haha.
    I located where the bug was occurring in my form. All of a sudden when I used any of my Save and Exit buttons to save and leave the form , the form then asks me to save changes which none were made, but(as I later found out) there were changes being made. The text '5' would appear in a phone number field, when it last had a phone number. And this would then get saved into the database by pressing yes to save changes in the form. Then in the database it would be '5' saved in the phone number. And when I next drew up the record from the database in the form, it would display a '5' there. In the Save and Exit buttons is a When-Button-Pressed trigger that has a few lines of code. First I set the :system.message_level := '5' then to '0' AFTER my COMMIT;
I noticed both values appear either in the form or in the database (in the phone number fields) either 5 or a 0.
I came to the conclusion that the bug is that it places the text of 5 from my lines of code into the phone number and I have no idea why. Maybe there is a problem with the addressing of fields in the form? Maybe its corrupted? Maybe its a bug of oracle?
But it always has to do with assignments in triggers. I ran it in debug to see if it repeats, and it didn't. It fixed itself AGAIN.
I just wanted to write this long drawn out message of my experiences with the Buggy Forms 9i Designer Tool.
Would really appreciate any feedback if anyone ever expereiences any of this.
    Thank you!
    Ken

Ken, its impossible to be define about your problem without looking at a simple test case but a couple of observations that I can make which may help you.
If seems to "extreme" and "random" a bug to be something which is fundemental in Forms. I assume you are not able to reproduce on a simple EMP test case...
What I think the problem is, given the symptoms and the workarounds, is that you are making chages to Forms/libraries and you are running against "old" copies of FMB or PLLs.
For example, I often see situations where the user makes a change to a PLL and does not recompile a form which uses that PLL (or infact picks up and old version of the pll or fmb). Forms then tends to give erroneous assignments and doing things like running in debug forces recompilation of the correct files and hence it goes away.
As I mentioned, its difficult to get to the bottom of this without a stand alone test case but I think that by trying to reproduce on a simple test case you will infact narrow down the problem to one that is more likely to be a set up issue specific to your application rather than a bug in forms in general.
    Hope that helps

  • What to do when it freezes

    Hey Everyone,
I've had my imac for several years now and was wondering what I "should" be doing when it freezes. It's started after about a year of use and now does it on a weekly basis. The only weird activity that occurs on this system is my son browsing school sites for kids. I say that as they are terrible for calling https sites and requiring admin rights. The calling out is unsuccessful as my sons id does not have the permission. When it freezes I'm still able to move my mouse just not click on anything. And I find the power saving feature is still able to dim the screen. For now, I'm unplugging the power, count to 5 and then plug back in. I know it's a bad thing but I have no idea what I should be doing. In Windows land I'd ctrl-alt-del and kill whatever task/process is causing the system stress. And if that failed also perform an unexpected reboot. Is there a secret for these imacs? I'd love to know.
    Thanks
    Mark

    OK, keep us posted Mark.
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • Configuration examples for AIP SSM10

    Dear Support,
Seems like I'm trying to learn another language reading the IPS command line interface guide! (I’m a traditional routing/switching person)
Does anyone know if there are any useful configuration examples for the AIP-SSM10 ?
I don't believe what I'm doing is rocket science, I just need to monitor two front end web servers and a back end SQL box for weird activity.
I have two asa5520's configured in a failover pair each contains an AIP-SSM10.
I have uploaded the latest signatures to the AIP, but just need to configure them. I haven't turned on the policy to route the traffic to the AIPs from the ASA yet as want to tune the configs on the AIPs first.
Any links / advice would be gratefully received.
I can post the current configs if that helps?
Thank you in advance for your assistance.
    Regards, Adrian.

Tuning the IPS signatures is going to be customized for every network, depending on what exactly you're looking for. The signatures are grouped into various categories and you can selectively enable/disable these categories, or just accept the default signatures. There's not a lot of configuration that needs to be done on the signatures. You just need to make sure to tune out your false positives by watching your events as they come in and seeing what events are actual attacks and which could be deemed permissible.
So to answer your question, there isn't really a config example for the IPS component. The quickest way to get up and running is to connect to the network port on the front of the module and load the SDM (HTTPS interface) of the IPS and review your signature settings there.

  • In Safari Forward/Back seems to jump 2 pages

In Safarai using the Back or Forward arrows or using menus, it seems to jump two pages either way instead of one. Happens whether using touchpad or Kensington bluetooth mouse. A hardware or Safari setting?
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions
Try deleting the Safari preference file. You will have to reset your preferences in Safari.
    Locate this file: com.apple.safari.plist
It's here: Home/Library/Preferences Open the Preferences folder, drag that file to the Trash and reboot. Now, launch Safari and click File/Empty Cache. Cache files need to be deleted at least once a week.
Hopefully that is the problem, not your mouse. Does your mouse cause any kind of weird activity other then when using Safari? If so, try reinstalling the mouse drivers.

  • Nissanlvd.exe taking up cpu usage primecoin

the only reference I saw to this file was on an italian forum. His symptoms mirrored mine. nissanlvd.exe running taking processing power. We have narrowed it down to primecoin miner being run and making connections outside our network. has this hit anyone
else..could this have been addon software..there is no add remove program for primecoin. We strengthened the firewall and the connections have stopped and the process has not started again. Will reboot this weekend to see if it comes back.
Would like to know if anyone else has seen this?
Is there a way I can tell for sure when it was installed and by who?
    Thanks

the other possibility is that someone in our org  was trying to mine primecoins..we were familiar with bitcoins but there were numerous wallets under the jackson directories for primecoin. The other thing is that an EULA asked to install the product
and someone said yes. Since we hardened the firewall there is no weird activity on that server. It just seems peculiar that the only references to this are one Italian forum and our system. There is no issues with other servers on the network. There is a distinct
possibility that we were hacked/invaded. I will reiterate that it seems weird that this isn't more prevalent if we were hacked..even on our own network. We are taking a slow approach to this but any other suggestions or advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
